After his disastrous experience on ALIEN 3, David Fincher retreated back into the world of music video and commercials, vowing to never again direct a feature film. That is, until a script by a young, first-time screenwriter named Andrew Kevin Walker crossed his desk. That script — about a serial killer who chooses his victims based on the Seven Deadly Sins — would prove to be the perfect canvas for Fincher's dark, exacting sensibilities. Making SEVEN (or SE7EN if ya nasty) didn't come without its share of headaches or interference from the studio. The now-iconic ending was a particular point of contention. But Fincher, having learned his lesson on ALIEN 3, was determined to make the film his way, no compromise. On this episode, we dive into the history behind SEVEN, from the evolution of Walker's script, through the difficult shoot and battles with the studio, through the film's release and ultimate success. We interrupt our regular programming for the first of several periodic check-ins with the X-Men's exploits on the silver screen! This "show within a show" begins with 2000's X-MEN - the movie that put comic book adaptations back on the map. Apropos of the concept itself, X-MEN's path to a theatrical debut was long and hard-fought. Plans to translate the series to film can be traced back to the early '80s, with comics creators Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas collaborating on a prospective screenplay for Orion Pictures. After Orion folded, subsequent efforts would invite interest from the likes of Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron for Carolco Pictures. Carolco's bankruptcy saw the rights revert to Marvel, and development stalled for years with the company unable to make the case for their successful comics franchise. However, impressed with the X-Men's unexpected Saturday morning dominance for Fox's children's television division, producer Lauren Shuler Donner thought it only made sense to option the property for 20th Century Fox's live action slate in 1994. The next two years brought drafts and treatments by 'SEVEN' screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, author Michael Chabon, and filmmaker Ed Solomon. The studio considered Brett Ratner, Robert Rodriguez, and Paul W.S. Anderson, but it was Bryan Singer in whom Fox believed they had found their perfect fit for director. Following Singer's hiring, a finalized script was eventually hammered out, with David Hayter receiving sole screenwriter credit (despite contributions from Solomon, Christopher McQuarrie, and Joss Whedon ending up in the onscreen product). Still, Fox was hedging their bets due to a string of critical and commercial failures by superhero adaptations in recent years, capping X-MEN's budget at $75 million (a paltry sum by today's standards). Despite some shake-ups along the way (Exit Original Wolverine and Cyclops actors Dougray Scott and Jim Caviezel, respectively), what materialized was a lean and efficient picture, brought to life by an incredibly talented - if not entirely star-studded - ensemble cast. X-MEN would overperform to the tune of $300 million worldwide, establishing itself right out of the gate as a blockbuster franchise that would carry Fox to huge box office receipts for years to come. It would likewise serve as a career-defining film series for many of its performers, themselves household names today. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe poised to make a go at recreating the magic, X-Position takes a look back at where it all began! Join Jenny, Tim, and unofficial third co-host Keithie as we break it all down. From the creative choices, the good, the bad, and the ugly one-liners, to the cast that could have been (Glenn Danzig's Wolverine? Bob Hoskins??), and even Magneto's Mutant Cave Rave, no thought shall remain unread (or unsaid).

Stick to the plan. Anticipate, don't improvise. Trust no one. Never yield an advantage. Fight only the battle you're paid to fight… and if you can do all that while listening to The Smiths, even better. That's the mantra of the eponymous assassin at the heart of The Killer, directed by David Fincher and written by our guest today  – the fantastic Andrew Kevin Walker. The Killer is a movie that deconstructs the hitman movie genre like Michael Fassbender's glassy-eyed gun-for-hire deconstructing a McDonald's sandwich on a park bench in Paris. It opens with a blaze of images that tease the explosive action typical of these films then swerves in a different direction. The result is a defiantly meditative two hours in which the violence of the movie's revenge plot is almost incidental to the character's meticulous ways and detached observations about the world. It's an absolutely riveting watch but then again, what did we expect? Unlike The Killer himself – who misses his target early on in the film, sparking the film's descent into chaos – Andrew and Fincher rarely miss their mark whenever they work together. The pair first teamed up on 1995's Se7en, which began life as a spec script that Andrew wrote after moving to New York from suburban Pennsylvania. Since then, Andrew's taken passes at Fight Club and The Game for Fincher, on top of his solo adventures in Hollywood, penning films like Sleepy Hollow and 2022's excellent Windfall. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Andy answers our questions about the subtle commentary on materialist culture woven into the film. We get into the influence of the novelist Somerset Maugham on Andy's work and break some of the film's most intriguing moments, including its enigmatic ending – in which a life is spared but existential questions loom.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Principal photography took place in Los Angeles, with the last scene filmed near Lancaster, California. The film's budget was $33 million.Released on September 22, 1995 by New Line Cinema, Seven was the seventh-highest-grossing film of the year, grossing over $327 million worldwide. An adaptation of the unproduced Batman vs Superman screenplay from 2002. Codenamed "Asylum", the script was written by Andrew Kevin Walker and Akiva Goldsman. This film would have been an attempt to revitalize the Batman & Superman franchises by pitting the two heroes against each other for the first time on the big screen. Wolfgang Petersen was set to direct with a Summer 2004 release. Warner Bros., however, would later cancel the project in favor of Batman Beyond - another project that would ultimately be abandoned.

CAGE UNCAGED CAGE MATCH: WILD AT HEART & 8MM  "The Difficult Follow-Up".  Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the textbook for cool, edgy nihilists (teenaged and otherwise) with 1995's SE7EN, directed by pod fave, overexposing messiah David Fincher. For fans, Walker's spiritual and numerical follow-up, 1999's 8MM was something of an event! Nicolas Cage as a PI hunting down the origins of a bonafide snuff film? Sign us up with a gallon of hand sanitizer and five needed showers with NIN blaring afterwards! Then the studio and director, Joel Schumacher, as fascicle as ever,  got involved making significant changes and, 21 years later, Walker hates this movie and wants it remade. Walker was paid 1.75 million (dollars!) for the script and that didn't make things a wee bit better?  Can Cage elevate the uneven material like he has so many times before (and after)?David Lynch was a cult figure in the 80s, given carte blanche by producer Dino De Laurentiis after the infamous Dune (1984) debacle. Lynch made 1986's Blue Velvet as a result, one of the greatest films of the decade and one that found him fully in control of his own distinct style. Then Twin Peaks exploded in 1990 and his weirdness reached full zeitgeist in the mainstream for a few months. So his film follow-up to Blue Velvet, 1990's Wild at Heart, based on Barry Gifford's slender novel of the same name, with Nicolas Cage as leading man along with Laura Dern on a sexy, crazy road trip? The anticipation (amongst fans of a certain age) was unbearable! Then it came out and fans (of a certain age) were all "Huh? What's with the Wizard of Oz stuff?" How does it look thirty years later? Is Cage the greatest actor Lynch has ever worked with?  One of the legendary directing stylists ever paired with our favorite actor! Then what makes this so difficult a follow-up? Listen and find out. Maybe it isn't!Explore the breadth of Cage in the 1990's as he goes from cult icon coveted by great directors in 1990 to full-fledged Oscar winning leading man by 1999 coveted by bland corporate studios for blander blockbusters. Does Cage keep his credibility intact?WILD AT HEART: 00:04:048MM: 00:50:00Theme Song by: Howling FantodsOur fourteen remaining Cage Films: Bringing Out The Dead, City of Angels, Con Air, Face/Off, Leaving Las Vegas, Joe, Left Behind, Lord of War, Mandy, Moonstruck, National Treasure II, PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, Raising Arizona, Snake EyesEPILOGUE: WILLY'S WONDERLAND

On this week's annotated deep dive, The Cultists Present Joel Schumacher's '8MM' (1999)— a classic tale about one man's quest for that holy grail of cinematic legend: The Snuff Film. Released at the brink of the new millennium, a time in which porn was just beginning to carve out a place for itself on the nascent mysterious frontier of the World Wide Web, and, somewhat surprisingly, still legally strictly regulated in its material distribution offline, 8MM serves as a peculiar preservation of a time in which hardcore porn was really something one had to go looking for. Largely panned in 1999 by critics and audiences alike as violent, sleazy, and hard to stomach, modern watchers now find this quaint alien world of the 1990s "underground" pornscape humorous and perplexing. London and Benji try to bridge this gap, situating the film in the context of the very specific time and place in which it was made, which, when combined with a contemporary reflexive lens, might allow us to now look back and appreciate the rich texture of this film for the curious time capsule that it is. (Second half deep dives include: the shifting status of “hardcore” porn and the often surprising legal regulations of its distribution; the differences between Andrew Kevin Walker's original screenplay and the final film; and the origin, legends and history of “Snuff” films.) First up is the dark crime mystery film that finds Mr. Cage playing a private investigator who has to navigate his way through the seedy underworld of hardcore porn in search of elusive answers to wether or not a snuff film is real, in the Andrew Kevin Walker penned, 8mm (1999). Our second film finds Mr. Cage playing a wealthy businessman who is the victim of a home invasion where members of his family may or may not be involved in Joel Schumacher's last film entitled Trespass (2011). Going back to the archives, my very first podcast I recorded for this channel (not the very first podcast I've done though). It's a series that i'm reviving and recording new episodes for available only on this channel. It's called UNWRITTEN RULERS: THE UNMADE FILM REVIEW where we... well, review unmade films: first drafts of screenplays, final stages of pre-production, unreleased movies, lost movies. We take all the evidence we can find on the unmade film of THAT episode and review it. This episode, I review the first draft of Andrew Kevin Walker's script for 8mm (1999), a film which - according to Walker - was ruined by the directors vision.

What's in the box? Gwyneth Paltrow's pretty little head. What's in this podcast? Spoilers! review of Se7en. *************************** Seven (stylized as SE7EN) is a 1995 American crime thriller film[3] directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew Kevin Walker. It stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, John C. McGinley, R. Lee Ermey, and Kevin Spacey. It tells the story of David Mills (Pitt), a detective who partners with the retiring William Somerset (Freeman) to track down a serial killer (Spacey) who uses the seven deadly sins as a motif in his murders. The screenplay was influenced by the time Walker spent in New York City trying to make it as a writer. Principal photography took place in Los Angeles, with the last scene filmed near Lancaster, California. The film's budget was $33 million. Released on September 22, 1995, by New Line Cinema, Seven was the seventh-highest-grossing film of the year, grossing over $327 million worldwide.[2] It was well received by critics, who praised the film's darkness, brutality and themes. The film was nominated for Best Film Editing at the 68th Academy Awards, but lost to Apollo 13.

Today we're talking about Event Horizon (1997)! Event Horizon is a 1997 British-American science fiction horror film. The screenplay was written by Philip Eisner, with an uncredited rewrite by Andrew Kevin Walker, and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film stars Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill. Event Horizon received negative reviews upon release with many critics comparing the film poorly to Alien, Hellraiser, The Black Hole, Solaris, Star Trek, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film was also a box office bomb, grossing $26.7 million against a $60 million production budget.

Nerdland was produced by Adult Swim production powerhouse Titmouse Inc., the group of animators responsible for creating some of the most revolutionary cartoons to have been featured on television ever. These guys made the contemporary classics Black Dynamite, China, IL, Metalocalypse, Superjail! and The Venture Brothers, which everyone should check out if only for their sheer abrasive creativity. The same can be said for Nerdland; the script, penned by Se7en screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, contributes a little extra insanity. The film is certainly not for everyone (at one point you get a little too acquainted with one of the protagonist's buttholes), but it is one of the most unique films you will see all year. No Film School's Jon Fusco sat down with Mr. Walker and Chris Prynoski, head honcho at Titmouse, who was so stricken by the script that he requested to direct the film. We discussed how the director and writer's collaboration should be so seamless that the audience shouldn't be sure who's responsible for what in the final cut.

Sure, it's the Wages of Cinema - but we have a limit for our 'cins', right? Long ago, when young men wore flannel and young women were catching up on episodes of My So-Called Life, people could walk into a theater, pay the $5, and get the crap knocked out of them by seeing something they hadn't seen before – such as, in 1995, a serial killer movie that had a grisly, nasty, dark-black-brown-hued vision of hell, with a surprise actor in the last act, and stars Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt making one of the most indelible detective teams in modern film. The movie was Se7en, staying at #1 for four weeks in a row, and it grossed 100 million at the domestic box office (327 worldwide). It became to horror/serial killer movies what Pulp Fiction at the time was to sly day-in-the-life crime movies: full of snappy, hard-edged dialog, nihilistic visions of the world, and taking humanity to task for things. The term ‘put him in the map' can be said for David Fincher on this film (prior to this he cut his teeth on Madonna videos and Alien3), and writer Andrew Kevin Walker (who would go on to… write The Game, also for Fincher, and other films). It's now 20 years old, and Jack and Andrew go in deep to look at the kills, the morality (and apathy), and surprises of the film – does it hold up? What's in the box? Oh, and SPOILERS. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. In 1993, a first time director named David Fincher was brought on to direct the third Alien film of that fabled franchise. Though the script had been rewritten numerous times, Fincher's debut film, Alien 3, has become a cult classic and been re-evaluated as a great sci-fi thriller. Whether the director to this day still has some issues with it, the film brought him to international attention and from there on, he has been considered one of our modern masters. His second film Seven (Se7en) is considered one of the best horror thrillers of the last 25 years. The film includes Brad Pitt in a role that would make him a star, Morgan Freeman in a role that would turn him into a leading man, and also Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey in early and unforgettable career roles. Written by Andrew Kevin Walker, the screenplay is about retiring and glum Detective Somerset who is dragged into investigating a new set of murders based on the Seven Deadly Sins. He is teamed up with the young and ambitious Detective David Mills who is gung-ho, but maybe just a little too much. Just as we have on every 50th episode, Dark Discussions chooses a classic and decides to discuss what the film is all about. Seven is one of those movies that really digs deep into both the human mind and people's motives. Everything from what defines evil to the way society builds and forms itself, Seven takes a look at the dark side of human life and asks many questions on what motivates us all. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. A cult classic ... what makes a cult classic and why? Well, the 1997 film, Event Horizon, is definitely one of those type of films. Similar to Alien 3, when it was first released the critics thumbed their nose at it, but the visuals and ideas behind the screenplay were very intriguing and have kept the movie alive with a group of fans vehemently defending it and giving it a second life with the home market. Now almost 20 years later, the film has been re-evaluated, and though hasn't gained the status of other "failed films" like John Carpenter's The Thing, it still has things that make it an interesting watch. First, this is one of the early films of English director Paul W. S. Anderson, most famous for the Resident Evil films. Also the screenplay was reworked by Andrew Kevin Walker, most famous for writing Seven, most certainly leaving his mark on this film. Dark Discussions discusses this film, a listener choice in our monthly Facebook poll, and talks about Paul W. S. Anderson as a director, the huge amount of cut and now lost footage that would be intriguing to see in a longer version of the film, and the movie's place in both the science fiction and horror genre canons. Whether the film is worthy of that cult classic status may not be answered but your hosts most certainly give it their best in the discussion rundown.
