POPULARITY
Started in 1971 as a one day show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Trainfest grew as the decades rolled by into a two-day show sponsored by the Wisconsin Southeastern division of the NMRA. Eventually the show moved to the Wisconsin State Fair Park and for decades was a huge success but as with everything, changes happened and those who took over were unable to maintain it's popularity. Over the last few years, the shows doors have only been open sporadically with those in charge unable to keep a successful show running. Fortunately, this year a group of individuals more capable took over and the show was held at the Baird Center in downtown Milwaukee. We sent two of the AML's crack reporters to mingle and schmooze with the attendees. The show was a great success this year, with many familiar faces in attendance. So, grab yourself a big bowl of shredded floor plans, a tall cool glass of half-finished coffee and enjoy!!
Today in 1789, North Carolina became the twelfth state to ratify the US Constitution. In the central part of the state there's an unincorporated community that locals named Whynot for a pretty unusual reason. Plus: starting Saturday in Milwaukee, it's Trainfest, which bills itself as the largest operating model railroad show in the US. Simon Hill gives a brief hobby update then Tom and Simon talk about how folks at Bredgar are planning for the longer-term new normal. Gordy Robinson has been modeling snow in N scale. The snow provides information about the layout based on the speed of the trains through the snow. Tom wonders how Gordy's perspective has changed now he's on the NMRA board. Mike Kenefeck's layout reflects a problem Tom finds himself in too. Paul Best has made progress through lockdown with MERG (https://www.merg.org.uk). Mike O'Dorney has been vaccinated and wants to help out with Silicon Valley Lines on location. Tom has some light teasing for Mike Slater before they talk about preparing for Trainfest 2021. Clark Kooning has a timed update on what is going on in the hobby. http://www.modelrailradio.com/archive.html#201
Mike Slater has been working on old projects that he's been finally fixing for friends. Mike talks brass in his collection. Tom wants to know more about virtual Trainfest. What will change in Clark Kooning's presentation through the new normal video clinics. Tom asks about how to provide more joy in the virtual experience in the hobby. Chris Adams was part of the 24-hour NRMAx. What would a layout tour in a box look like? What technical equipment is needed for a layout tour to be filmed? They discuss the social aspect of the hobby and how to maintain it through the new normal. Chris identifies what the new normal has meant for him. http://www.modelrailradio.com/archive.html#184
Train shows are being cancelled all over the world these days, one right after another and with the recent news that Milwaukee's TrainFest won't be happening this year we decided to find out what's the status of the number one train show in America. The crack news team here at the AML Network scraped together enough cash to get bus tickets for the whole gang and made their way to Springfield, Massachusetts the home of the Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show to find out what the future holds for this great event. So grab yourself a bowl of shredded floor plans, a steaming hot mug of boiled hot dog water and enjoy!!
Lawrence Eggering has been working on a grade crossing with Arduino sensors. Tom asks Lawrence about working on the same layout for twenty four years. Tom asks Mike Slater about how he thinks the hobby will change through this period. Tom asks Mike about the bridge he is building in module form. Tom asks after James Rindt. (Please note we will be discussing the change with Trainfest 2020 in an upcoming recording with Mike Slater. The old audio is left in for coherency.) Clark Kooning offers a problem with deceased estates and the current time. In terms of modeling, Clark has finished his mountains and some grass but has been exploring micro-lighting on his layout. Will Merrell has been building modules for operations. Will would like to learn from the folks in the UK. http://www.modelrailradio.com/archive.html#179
