A talented jazz musician with a mysterious past. Melvin David Rees captivated audiences with his haunting melodies and effortless skill, but behind the stage lights and smoky jazz clubs lurked something far darker. A man of intelligence, charm, and discipline. A man who lived two lives: one in the spotlight, and one in the shadows. From his time as a military musician in Europe to his nights playing in dimly lit clubs around Washington, D.C., Rees moved through life unnoticed, well… until the crimes began. A brutal murder on the side of the road. A family vanishing into the night. A shack filled with disturbing photographs. And a cryptic note that would finally expose him for what he was.Sources: Melvin Davis Rees, Jr., Appellant, v. C. C. In this episode, Oliver Cronk and David Rees from Scott Logic are joined by Hannah Smith, Director of Operations at Green Web Foundation, an organisation aiming to make the internet fossil-free by 2030. Together, they explore the potential benefits and limitations of ‘carbon aware' computing, which involves scheduling computational workloads during times or in locations where energy sources have lower carbon emissions. With the simplicity of ‘carbon aware' being at odds with the complexities of managing the electricity grid, they move on to discussing ‘grid aware'. This concept goes beyond carbon intensity to take into account factors like grid stability, demand patterns, and energy sources being curtailed. Ultimately, they consider just how marginal the gains are likely to be. With global emissions from cloud computing already exceeding those from commercial flights, is ‘carbon aware' a distraction from getting to grips with the scale of the challenge we face? In this episode, you'll hear:  Why would someone be embarrassed to tell people they are suicidal? What can you tell us about the mindset of someone who has been told they have a few weeks to live?  What can friends and family do for someone struggling with mental or physical illness? On March 10, 2017, David was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer called acute myeloid leukemia. His doctors told him if he didn't start treatments immediately, he would have three to four weeks to live. Right before his diagnosis, David was working as a youth pastor, had just met the woman who would become his wife and was living his dream life. Shortly after their engagement, he began noticing symptoms and was misdiagnosed a handful of times, but eventually, the correct diagnosis came. Over the next nine months, he had seven hospitalizations, spent over 100 nights in the hospital, endured four rounds of chemotherapy, received a stem cell infusion, and received 37 blood transfusions. Thankfully, on December 19, 2017, his cancer was in remission. In the years before his diagnosis, David went through several seasons of depression and struggled with suicidal thoughts that he kept to himself for nearly three years. Eventually, he gained perspective on the long-term impacts of suicide and how it would negatively affect the people around him. He never knew how important the lessons he learned in middle school would be when he was diagnosed with cancer. He learned that leaning on people and relying on loved ones is one of the most important factors in making it through hard times. When he was younger, he felt like he could never tell anyone he was hurting, but when he faced cancer, he found he had to do it, and that was one major factor that helped him stay alive. David tells us there is great power in just being there for people who are struggling. Treating them like people and giving them time where they can forget the struggle and remember what it means to be alive. There is a lot in life that can't be controlled, so David seized every opportunity to take control of what he could. Whether it was shaving his head when he began losing his hair from chemotherapy or realizing that gratitude is a mindset and cultivating a mindset is also a choice. Sometimes being faced with death is the thing that shakes people into developing a mindset that will help them go forward for the rest of their lives. This rang true for David. Cultivating a positive mindset, learning gratitude, and finding humor in the dark times will serve him regardless of what is happening. Cancer threatened to kill him, but it actually gave him this life he loves so much and a chance to make the most of it.  “You have to be ready at all times, everyone, to hear those words… Are you prepared if you heard those words today? Are you okay with your life? Are you satisfied with your life? Do you feel like you made an impact?” In this episode, you'll hear:  Why would someone be embarrassed to tell people they are suicidal?

Make sure you check out the free resource library: https://firstactionbestaction.com/resouces One of my favorite albums (and yes I listened to it on vinyl) was the children's album "Free To Be You And Me". One of the songs was penned by poet and storyteller Shel Silverstein. It is called "Helping". The final verse goes: And some kind of help is the kind of help That helping's all about And some kind of help is the kind of help We all can do without It speaks clearly to the idea that sometimes help is wonderful and sometimes other people's help actually gets in the way. I often refer to the latter variety as "kind-hearted incompetence". In the mid-2010s there was an absolutely beautiful (and sadly short-run) television show called "Going Deep with David Rees". In each episode David tackled the best way to solve one simple problem, like how to make ice, swat a fly, tie a shoe, shake hands, or open a door. Each episode was dedicated to only one of these topics. David is a beautiful mix of curiosity, kindness, and obsessiveness. Because of this, each episode turned into a reflection on what it means to be human and to be kind. (So much so I bought the first season on DVD just to show my sister the episode on how to pet a dog.) In the episode on how to wash dishes there is a long segment dedicated to how to load a dishwasher. In case you weren't aware (and I somehow doubt that), people have strong opinions on the best way to load a dishwasher and they are willing to let you know how they do it and why it is the best. In the middle of this conversation David made the most beautiful statement about helping. The statement provides guidance on how to offer "the kind of help that helping is all about" and not "the kind of help that we can do without". Understanding this concept will not only make you a better helper to the people in your life, but it will also teach you the best ways to ask for help so you can avoid kind-hearted incompetence barging into your life.
