Dog Vomit Slime Mold: The Yellow Blob on the Move

The Southern Naturalist

In this episode of The Southern Naturalist, Dr. Bob and Dr. Aimée Thomas explore the slimy, strange, and surprisingly intelligent world of slime molds — with a special focus on the infamous Fuligo septica, also known as dog vomit slime mold. Despite its less-than-appealing nickname, this bright yellow protist is a marvel of biology.Slime molds are cosmopolitan species, meaning they can be found all over the world — from your backyard mulch pile to deep forest floors. While F. septica takes center stage, we also explore a range of other slime mold species and what they reveal about the natural world. These unique organisms have long defied easy classification. Though they're often mistaken for fungi, slime molds are actually protists — a fascinating group of life forms that blur the lines between what we think we know about cells, movement, and even behavior. We discuss how scientists use slime molds to study things like traffic flow and network optimization, how some slime molds can “solve” mazes, and how their behavior continues to baffle researchers. You'll also hear about the strange folklore that surrounds slime molds across cultures and why these humble blobs have captured the human imagination for centuries.Whether you're a slime mold skeptic or a full-blown myxomycophile, this episode is a deep dive into the gooey, brainy, and totally bizarre world of some of nature's most overlooked organisms.Follow @SoNatPodcast on Facebook and Instagram!Visit our website at https://lucec.loyno.edu/so-nat-podcast Do you have any more questions about nature? Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Work in HeavenDevotional: 3 of 5Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on…for their deeds will follow them. (Revelation 14:13)A fortune teller once told Walt Disney that he would die on his birthday before he turned thirty-five. As Disney biographer Bob Thomas explains, “the prediction had a profound effect on him…he seemed to be in a race against time to accomplish all the work he wanted to do.” Can you relate to Walt Disney? Of feeling like time is speeding up and the drumbeat of hurry only seems to be growing louder? I used to feel that burden far more than I do today. What has God used to free me? Biblical truths about work on the New Earth in general and this one in particular: We can expect some continuity between our work now and our work on the New Earth. What kinds of continuity? At least these two. First, there will be some continuity in what we work with as Isaiah 60 promises that some of the best cultural goods from this life will miraculously be resurrected in the next one. The New Earth is not a return to the Stone Age. We can expect the very best work of all time as our starting point. Second, there may be some continuity in our occupations on the New Earth. Revelation 14:13 says, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on…for their deeds will follow them.” Pastor John Mark Comer points out that the Greek word for “deeds” here can also mean “occupation.” In other words, you may be working today at the craft God intends for you to develop for his glory for eternity! (If that sounds terrible to you, don't miss next week's devotional.)What should our response be to this promise of continuity between our work now and then? A remarkable lack of hurry today. This has been one of the most profound and surprising benefits of meditating on the promise of work on the New Earth personally. I am far less hurried than I used to be. I am at peace with the fact that I (and you) will die with unfinished symphonies. Because I know that if the things on my to-do list are on God's to-do list, he will either 1) choose someone else to complete that work, 2) complete the work on his own, or 3) bless me with the opportunity to finish the work when I rise from the nap that is death.I pray that as you meditate on these biblical truths, you will experience that same peace and lack of hurry in your own work today!

In this episode, we delve into the world of commercial real estate investing with Bob Thomas, a seasoned investor with over a decade of experience. Join us as Bob shares valuable insights into his journey across various asset classes, the importance of partnerships, and strategies for navigating the ever-changing real estate market. Key Takeaways: The Power of Partnerships: Bob emphasizes the significance of forming strategic partnerships in real estate investing. Collaborative partnerships allow investors to leverage each other's strengths, pool resources, and pursue larger deals with greater efficiency. Aligning incentives and complementary skill sets within partnerships is essential for success. While Bob excels in capital raising and acquisitions, he acknowledges his weakness in construction project management. Partnering with experts in diverse areas can lead to creative and synergistic outcomes. Thinking Big and Setting Ambitious Goals: Bob draws inspiration from Stephen Schwarzman's book, "What It Takes," highlighting the importance of thinking big in real estate. He believes that if you're going to invest your time and effort, it's best to aim for substantial goals that challenge you. Setting big, hairy, audacious goals (BHAGs) can push investors in the right direction. Bob's goal is to grow his portfolio to a trillion dollars in assets under management, emphasizing that a big vision drives progress and innovation. Educating for Financial Literacy: Bob's commitment to financial education extends beyond real estate investing. He actively engages in financial literacy talks, teaching both investors and school children about creating generational wealth, passive income, and sound financial practices. Recognizing the importance of breaking free from a traditional W-2 mindset, Bob believes that introducing children to alternative paths early in life can help them make informed financial decisions and plan for a prosperous future.   Bob Thomas | Real Estate Background Chief Investment Officer & Co-Founder of Peak Asset Management Portfolio: ~200 units of multifamily ~100k sq ft. of commercial retail/office Based in: Portland, OR Say hi to him at:  peakassetmgt.com LinkedIn Best Ever Book: What It Takes by Stephen Schwarzman Greatest Lesson: Selecting the right partners is the most critical piece to one's success or failure. The struggle you're in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow. - Robert Tew In a world of abundance, we take many things for granted. Our morning coffee is one such example. A morning brew helps many of us win the battle to wake up by winning a neurochemical war. However, there is another battle that takes place using chemical warfare. The battlefield? The dense, green foliage of the coffee plantation. Align to the left Align in the middle Resize to full width Align to the right Add a link to the embedded image Add alt text Delete image No alt text provided for this image Created using AI Like any crop, coffee plants are subject to attack by pests. Many plants and trees have developed fascinating defence mechanisms to protect themselves against such attacks. (Like the stinging nettle to the human touch) When insects nibble on the foliage of coffee plants, they release defence compounds. One of the defence mechanisms of coffee plants is the production of caffeine. Caffeine acts as a natural insecticide, deterring and even poisoning certain insects that attempt to feed on the plant. The caffeine content in coffee leaves and beans is toxic to many insects, making them less attractive to pests and reducing the likelihood of severe infestations. In addition to caffeine, coffee plants release an acid called chlorogenic acid. This acid acts as a natural fungicide and insecticide for the plant. When we drink our cup of coffee, we also drink these compounds. Chlorogenic acid is a powerful antioxidant and helps with weight loss, blood sugar control, and heart disease prevention. However, while protecting coffee plants with pesticides and insecticides might seem beneficial, this prevents the release of chlorogenic acid. Without insect attacks, the plant does not undergo stress or produce beneficial acids. Hormesis is a process whereby a beneficial effect (improved health, stress tolerance, growth or longevity) results from exposure to low doses of a toxin or stressor. Hormesis has been studied extensively with ageing. Researchers found that introducing stressors like intermittent fasting, exercise, and cold shower therapy produces resilience and anti-ageing effects. For example, when an optional cold shower activates a mild fight or flight response, it increases our tolerance for the cold and can guard us against catching a cold. Just as we can build up our tolerance for poisons, we can improve our tolerance for adversity. This coffee narrative is a helpful metaphor that resonates in our lives and business. It's about the essentiality of struggle and how it moulds us, adding depth and substance to our existence. Just as the coffee plant needs the insect's bite to release its acid and liberate its flavour, we must struggle to bring out the best in ourselves. This is the paradoxical advantage of adversity. The Adversity Advantage: Nurturing Resilience In our forthcoming series, with former Executive Director of Research for the Accenture Institute for High Performance, Paul Nunes explains how high-performance companies develop a hothouse of talent. Paul tells us, "Talent hothouses are like agricultural greenhouses". A company needs to start with the right seeds to ensure early success for the vast majority. As those seedlings grow, leaders must find ways to prepare high-potential talent for inevitable challenges ahead. That preparation includes steps to increase their hardiness, so managers must regularly expose employees to unfamiliar ideas and ways of thinking." High-performance businesses create environments—often highly challenging—for employees to acquire the skills and experience needed to climb up the corporate ladder quickly. The goal is partly to create what our Accenture colleague Bob Thomas, in his book on the topic, calls “crucible” experiences. These life-changing events, whether on the job or not, hold lifetime lessons that can be mined to help transform someone into a leader." “You learn ten...

January 27, 1925. Musher “Wild Bill” Shannon and his team of sled dogs race off into the frigid Alaskan night. He's carrying a package of life-saving serum, wrapped in fur to keep it from freezing. There's no time to waste: nearly 700 miles away, in the snowed-in town of Nome, children are dying of diphtheria. Twenty mushers and hundreds of dogs are about to take part in an almost superhuman effort to ferry desperately needed medicine across the howling Alaskan wilderness. Who were they, and what did they endure to reach their goal? And as they pressed on, how did their efforts grip the nation? Special thanks to our guests, Pam Flowers, author of Togo and Leonhard, and Bob Thomas, author of Leonhard Seppala: The Siberian Dog and The Golden Age of Sleddog Racing 1908-1941. Hosted on Acast.
