Their vision is to alleviate world-wide suffering caused by animal envenomation. The mission of AVRI is to aid in the development of more effective prevention and treatment protocols for animal envenomation by mediating between involved parties, educating medical personnel and the public in order to reduce morbidity and mortality around the world. With Sri Lanka as the starting point, AVRI's goal is to reach into areas of the world suffering from the worst morbidity and mortality rates due to animal envenomations. Currently, anitvenoms are the only proven specific treatment for envenomation. AVRI is working with international partners to develop new, regionally specific, polyvalent or polyspecific (antivenoms that neutralize toxins from more than one species) antivenoms for developing nations.

Born in South Africa, Donald Schultz is a world-renowned venom expert, writer, photographer and adventurer and has been in the public eye for most of his life. Donald started to work with reptiles at the age of 13 and was fortunate to have an internship at the world-famous Fitzsimons Snake Park, where he received a sound schooling in herpetology. By Donald giving demonstrations and spending endless hours studying snake behavior, catching venomous snakes became second nature, and his fascination with these creatures became the bedrock of his career. His love affair with dangerous activities extends beyond just his work, and he tries to incorporate the two whenever possible. He is an avid skydiver and a highly specialized scuba diver, having been certified as the youngest CLASS II commercial diver in Africa. Donald has recently been featured in Animal Planet's newst wildlife adventure series "Wild Recon" and recently in "Venom in Vegas" where Don shared tight quarters with dozens of venomous snakes to raise awareness for international snake bite victims.
