One day I was mindlessly scrolling on Instagram and a video stopped me in my tracks. This reel was from a 26-year old with a permanent job, offering some excellent career advice, well beyond his years. I was intrigued, but when I read his bio, saying “Steve Irwin X Tupac,” I was instantly hooked! Landing a permanent job is tough when you are first starting out, so this is an accomplishment in itself. Some of my friends with Master's degrees didn't get theirs until their late 20s or early 30s, and here was this young man without an advanced degree in one at 26. But what also struck me was the advice he was giving. A lot of the things are not necessarily hard or complicated, but simply what most people don't do because it does involve stepping out of your comfort zone. These are the kinds of things that actually get results, and the same kinds of things I tell my students to do, but that most people aren't willing to do…(cough cough intentional networking)... And of course his style of science communication really captured my attention! With an Instagram bio that read “Steve Irwin X Tupac," I had to learn more. And what better place than the Fancy Scientist podcast? José Juan Rodriguez Gutierrez works on threatened and endangered species in rural Humboldt County, California (he prefers to keep the organization he works for private). His job sounds like a nature lover's dream: getting to conduct wildlife surveys out in the forest, often setting up camera traps to understand the population dynamics of endangered species like the Humboldt marten. He's also worked on the California Condor Recovery Program, prairie, stream, and other restoration initiatives, as well as salmon research to name a few. José spends most of his time in the forest and lives in a small town of less than 20,000 people, yet he grew up in Long Beach, California, a big city with millions of people and stores at every corner! I ask José how he was able to land a permanent job at the young age of 26 and his personal path into place that looks so different from how he grew up. We get into practical tips for starting wildlife careers as José shares his unconventional approach to networking, starting with classmates and peers rather than jumping straight to established professionals, the mentors who went beyond their job description to make a real difference for him, and how he kept his career moving during the pandemic by teaching himself GIS when fieldwork wasn't an option.There are also some more unexpected parts of José's journey, including one of the ways he's passionate about getting conservation messages out: combining his love of hip-hop with the wildlife world.As a kid, he was shy and self-conscious about his accent, never picturing himself in front of a camera or a crowd. But his passion for communicating conservation superseded that, causing him to step out of his comfort zone, pursue a communication degree, practice, and hone his skills. And the results are incredible: He's grown his Instagram to nearly 20,000 followers since I first came across him and his posts reach hundreds of thousands of people! José opens up about how this wasn't always easy, and the more uncomfortable parts of building confidence and communication skills, something he had to work on early in his career. His passion for conservation overrode his insecurities, as well as his desire to reach all kinds of communities, especially the ones he is a part of.  He's especially intentional about communicating conservation back to his own community and other underrepresented groups historically excluded from science and nature education. As the child of immigrant parents, he felt isolated growing up, not speaking English at first, and rarely seeing anyone who looked or sounded like him in the wildlife field. Instead of leaving that part of himself behind, he wants Latino kids to see themselves in this work too. He believes they (and you!) belong in nature, even if you have not spent much time in it yet. You'll see that one way José does this as well as sets himself apart from other wildlife professionals on social media is through blending messages of conservation with hip-hop culture music, lending to his "Steve Irwin X Tupac" tagline on his Instagram bio. When he received a grant from Save the Redwoods League to study California condor reintroduction, he even made one of his three deliverables a hip-hop song about the species.You're going to walk away from this interview inspired, excited, and with a huge smile on your face, because not only is José's journey inspirational, but he's also super funny, has a diverse range of interests, and is beyond passionate about this field. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we have a brand new episode, because it's episode 500! Congratulations to me and to you too, listening to the 500th episode of a podcast! That doesn't happen very often! Despite the big 5-0-0, I'm going to treat this like a regular episode. Thanks to Dylan, Emily, and Michelle, Remy and Julien, and Rosie for their suggestions this week! We'll start with Dylan, Emily, and Michelle, who live in Australia. A while back now they got to visit the Australia Zoo, which is run by the Irwin family. Steve Irwin was a conservationist, science educator, and wildlife rehabilitator, also known as the Crocodile Hunter for his work relocating crocodiles who were endangering people, and vice versa. He died tragically young in 2006 but his wife and children continue his work. Michelle pointed out that Irwin has been honored by scientists who have named newly discovered animals for him, so let's learn about a few of them! The most recent one is a type of wolf snake discovered on the Great Nicobar Island off the coast of India and described in 2025, Lycodon irwini. It's mostly black in color with a slender body, and can grow as much as 47 inches long, or 119 cm. That's almost four feet long! Luckily it's non-venomous, plus it has only been found on that one island in evergreen forests, so you're not likely to run across one by accident. It probably eats small animals like frogs, but we don't know a whole lot about it yet. Back in 1990, Steve Irwin caught a strange turtle while fishing with his father, Bob, who was also a conservationist. Between them, the two men knew a whole lot about Australian wildlife but they didn't know what the turtle was. They sent pictures to a turtle expert, who determined that yes, it was a species new to science. It was described in 1997 and named Irwin's turtle, Elseya irwini. Irwin's turtle has a black and yellow carapace and lives in the lower part of the Burdekin River in northern Queensland. The female also has a light-colored head and other pale spots on the body. Like some other turtles, it can absorb oxygen from the water through its cloaca, which is often referred to as its butt. A chamber at the end of the cloaca contains structures that act like gills and absorb oxygen. This allows it to stay underwater longer, and in fact it can't survive in water that doesn't contain enough oxygen. As a result, Irwin's turtle is endangered due to habitat loss, especially from pollution and the damming of its river home. It used to be common but its numbers are in decline. The Australia Zoo started a captive breeding program to help conserve the species, and in 2023 they succeeded in hatching the very first Irwin's turtle babies ever bred in captivity. The last one is my favorite, a land snail named after Steve Irwin. It was described as a new species in 2009, only a few years after Irwin died, and was named Crikey steveirwini. It's the only species in the genus Crikey. It only lives in high altitudes in the tropical rainforests of northeastern Queensland. It's rare and not much is known about it, because it's so hard to find and so small. It has a cone-shaped shell that's striped with spiral bands of brown, yellow-brown, and white, and it only grows 15 mm long at most. Next, brothers Remy and Julien wanted to learn about the African lungfish. Lungfish are fascinating fish, because as you can probably guess from the name, they have gills but they also have lungs, and the fish needs both to get enough oxygen. Four species of lungfish live in Africa, all belonging to the family Protopteridae. They're eel-like in shape although they're not closely related to eels at all, with soft scales, and a dorsal fin that continues down the fish's back and continues around the end of the tail, since the dorsal fin and tail fin are actually fused into one big fin. Its only other fins are the pectoral and pelvic, which are very thin and are more like flexible legs than actual fins. The lungfish can actually crawl along the bottom of the swamp or lake with its fins, although it can also swim like an eel. While the African lungfish does have gills, they're small and are mostly associated with eliminating carbon dioxide instead of absorbing oxygen. The lungs do most of the work. The fish surfaces periodically to gulp fresh air into its lungs. It's one of the few fish that can drown if it can't surface for air. African lungfish eat insect larvae, especially of aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, small fish, and frogs, but it can also sometimes eat seeds and other plant material. It usually lives in shallow water like swamps and small rivers, where there's not a lot of oxygen in the water. In many cases, its waterways dry up periodically, but the fish can still survive. As its water gets lower and lower, the lungfish digs into the mud and curls up, then secretes a thick mucus that helps retain moisture and stops its body from drying out. Its metabolism slows way down so it doesn't need to breathe very often, and it doesn't need to eat. It can survive this way for up to four years, although it usually only has to stay in its cocoon for a few months, until the rains return and its waterways fill up again. The smallest species of African lungfish is the East African lungfish, which only grows about 17 inches long, or 44 cm, while the largest is the marbled lungfish that can grow a whopping six and a half feet long, or two meters. Lastly, Rosie suggested we learn about the fennec fox, which lives in northern Africa. It's the smallest fox in the world, barely eight inches tall at the shoulder, or 20 cm, but it has incredibly large ears. Its ears can be as much as six inches long, or 15 cm. Part of the reason its ears are so big is so it can hear insects and other small animals moving around underground, but they're also big because they help dissipate heat from the fox's body into the air. Since the fennec lives in deserts, that's only one of many adaptations it has to the heat and lack of water. For instance, the fennec gets most of its water through the food it eats. It's also a nocturnal animal. The pads of its paws are protected by long, coarse hairs that grow between the pads, so hot sand won't burn its toe beans. The hair also gives the fox better traction in loose sand. The fennec's fur is a pale sandy color with a black tip to the tail, and it has dark eyes. It eats rodents, birds and their eggs, insects, scorpions, and other small animals, as well as fruit and other plant material. It can jump really far, some four feet in one bound, or 120 cm. Not only can it run really fast, it can change directions really quickly too. This helps it escape predators and catch prey. Fennecs can be social animals and like to play, even as adults. Pairs mate for life and both parents take care of the babies. A fennec's burrow can be very large and may even link up to neighboring fennec family burrow, so neighbors can visit each other without going out into the heat of the day. Have you been applying and applying to wildlife jobs or experiences only to hear nothing back? That's exactly what happened to Dylan Karl despite having a degree from a prestigious university specializing in wildlife, a Master's degree, years of experience, and a wildlife biologist certification from The Wildlife Society. Dylan had seemingly everything, yet, he was applying to 30-50 jobs every season, but nothing was landing. Dylan's story is even more unique. Dylan was one of my Successful Wildlife Professional students, and when I first started working with him, he was working in a wildlife job, but unhappy. He felt that although he was technically involved in wildlife work mitigating damage at airports, he wasn't having the impact he wanted, and felt like he was spending a lot more time killing wildlife rather than saving it. So Dylan decided to join the Successful Wildlife Professional program and get help. And it paid off almost instantly! Within two months of the program, he applied for and got his dream job of working with Mexican wolves. This was a huge win and we were both so excited for his future! Because of these incredible results, I knew I had to have him on the Fancy Scientist podcast to share. But when I interviewed him, I was surprised he was no longer working there! It turns out that his story took an unexpected turn. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for reality to not match up with expectations in our field… Dylan had always imagined himself as a bridge between wildlife and people, helping manage conflict and promote coexistence. But what he thought was a non-lethal position in Arizona turned out to not be so non-lethal after all, due to pressure from ranchers pushing for the lethal removal of federally protected wolves. This didn't sit right with him, and that misalignment caused him to rethink what he actually wanted out of his career.Luckily, he had the tools he learned from the Successful Wildlife Professional to lean back on. He used the trainings on understanding the jobs and workplaces and personal exercises to uncover his own desires and strengths to re-identify his dream job. He combined this with the wildlife-specific protocols in the application section to write competitive cover letters and resumes for his new dream path. He now works as a Preserve Management Assistant for the prestigious The Nature Conservancy in northwestern Minnesota, helping to manage approximately 300,000 acres of tallgrass aspen parklands through tools like prescribed burns and seed spreading. Benji posted to Instagram that he and Cameron are happy, excited, and feeling so blessed to announce the birth of our third child, Nautous Madden. Welcome to the world sun. The announcement came with the trading card graphic featuring a pirate ship and the meeting of the name Sailor Navigator Voyager, one who embarks on a journey and fears not the unknown. Karon and Benji are also parents to daughter Radix and son Cardinal two. So now they've got three kids under seven. Witches a lot. Cameron, who came out of a ten year Hollywood retirement last year, but back in action is clearly thriving on all fronts. Radix, Cardinal and Nortis Madam. They are committed to a theme and I respect it enormously. And more baby news, this one with royal flavor. Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack brooks Bank can be ever heard a richer name are expecting their third child. Buckingham Palace announced her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and mister Jack brooks Bank are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their third child together due this summer. August, aged five and Ernest, age two are also very excited to have another sibling join the family. His Majesty the King has been informed and is delighted with the news. And next time. Britney spears a pete in court yesterday by her lawyer for her duy case and has avoided jail time. She pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving involving alcohol and drugs and was sentenced to twelve months probation, fines, and must complete a three month DY course. The original dui charge has been dropped, but it's a tough one because obviously I want Brittany to be happy and healthy and not got a jail, but also driving while under the influence so incredibly dangerous. She was offered the deal because she has no prior DUI history, there was no crash, and she voluntarily checked herself into rehab straight after the rest. She completed that treatment last week. Let's hope she's an upward trajectory soon. Stick around when we return. Chris Jenna has her site set on a new client, and Jake Paul has responded to the roasting from Olivia Rodrigo on SNL Welcome Back to Morning Tea. Reports have emerged that Chris Jenna has her site set on Robert Erwin as her next management client, and insider says Chris is impressed by Robert's incredibly telegenic, wholesome, and authentic nature. However, Terry has reservations, specifically that she doesn't want Robert to come tabloid fodder. The source added, history has not been kind to the men who get involved with the Gardashians and Terry being the absolute icon. He posted that they both had the vision and he said proud of you for real, adding when challenged, I got that she was making a joke at my expense.
