In this episode, Kevin and Steph meet Amy Siewe or, as she's better known down in the Florida Everglades, the famous “python huntress”. Florida is home to more than 500 nonnative species, more than 50 of which are reptiles. Current monitoring techniques depend on visual surveys by scientists, and this is far from an exact science because reptiles — particularly snakes — are extremely elusive. A new technique being developed by scientists at University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) can identify DNA traces of Burmese pythons — as well as northern African pythons, boa constrictors, and rainbow boas — weeks after they have left an area using soil or water samples.
Jenna Palmisano is a doctoral student at the University of Central Florida tracking a parasitic tongue worm infecting nearly 2 dozen native species of snake, including the pygmy rattlesnake, and other ectotherms in central and southern Florida. While much is not known about this parasite, often referred to as a lung worm when it is actually a type of crustacean, it is believed to have been introduced by the many diverse invasive species, especially Burmese Pythons that are now endemic to Florida's rich biodiverse ecosystems. Jenna's field tracking and molecular work are attempting to identify where and at what rate the infestation has spread and to better understand the complex life cycle of this organism which has contributed to signifiant declines in native snake species. She helps manage a website to inform the public of this invasive disease and to recruit anecdotal data from citizen scientists. Animal Care Software
John Kinney discusses his start in reptile keeping in the late 70's and 80's, working up to his large snake collection before moving away from the reptile hobby. He shares details of the issues he had during the time of keeping reptiles and the ethics behind it, as well as his experience in the animal testing pharmaceutical world. John shares what his previous duties were in that facility, the ethics behind it, his opinions on animal rights and PETA, and much more. Later on he highlights why he got back into reptile keeping and how he views the community today. We also discuss the snake species he is keeping currently as well as the enclosures he has them set up in. John also discusses his experience in working for Custom Reptile Habitats, experiencing the enclosure build offs with content creators, and his overall view of social media in the reptile community. Chris Gillette aka Gatorboys Chris is one of the most passionate wildlife experts you can find and an animal advocate that has been working with the wildest animals in the world for a LONG time. He has done it all from handling extremely venomous snakes to hand feeding GIANT crocodilians that most people would be terrified to even stand next to. He runs gator tours in Homestead, Florida giving people wildlife experiences that they might not ever get the chance to have otherwise. One of his favorite gators, Casper, even responds to his commands and knows his own name. The work he has done with the gator he works with every day is astonishing and has brought a new perspective to human and alligator interactions. He has shown that while they are still capable of being very dangerous animals due to their extreme strength and lightning fast striking capabilities, they are not monsters but rather beautiful creatures that are heavily misunderstood by a large portion of the public. On top of his work with wildlife, he has grown his Youtube channel, Florida's Wildest, to over 500,000 followers. Rosie Moore is a geoscientist and wildlife expert that has seen some of the craziest things you can imagine. She grew up in Missouri and moved to Florida get a degree studying Sharks, but ended up finding herself interacting with just about every different type of animal in between on the way there. From climbing in trees and studying thermoregulation in freshly hatched Wood Storks to opening 18 foot Burmese Pythons stuffed with entire Alligators, she has done it all. While working at a Herpetology lab, she videoed an intact American Alligator inside of an invasive Python and went insanely viral overnight. This lead to appearances on CNN, FOX News, Daily Mail, and just about every single publication on the internet across the entire globe. Since achieving this level of attention and gaining a huge platform, she is focusing on growing the ability for women to follow their passions in science and specifically herpetology and sharks. Most of our audience is either in Minnesota or Wisconsin, so we don't encounter a lot of deadly venom. It makes it easy to forget that in much of the world, there are animals the size of a quarter that can kill you. There are also animals the size of of a room that can kill you. Oddly, those ones choose not to. Perhaps it's because they've already eaten every mammal in the Everglades. They're called Burmese Pythons, and Amy hunts them. Who let the 200-pound python out? Today, the origin of the Burmese python problem in the Everglades. And how science is being used to try to solve what seems like a losing battle. I'm back in South Florida, in the Everglades, on the side of a dirt road next to a canal. It looks pretty similar to where I met Anthony Flanagan and Kevin Pavlidis - the two python bounty hunters from the last episode.Out in front of me are miles and miles of marshland. Today, we're diving back into the Burmese python problem. But this time...we're doing something a little different. We're letting the pythons go.With the focus being the urgent removal of Burmese pythons from the Everglades, it might seem counterintuitive that we are now releasing one back into the ecosystem that it's destroying. But there's a good reason why. This snake will lead researchers towards all sorts of important information that might just save this ecosystem from an impending ecological collapse.Behind the scenes footage of releasing the 16-foot python and our run-in with the alligator.Follow us on Instagram @thewildpod and @chrismorganwildlife
There are not supposed to be Burmese Pythons in Florida. Yet experts think there are anywhere from 30-150,000 of the large snakes living wild in the Everglades and some parts North. In the Florida Everglades, the Burmese python is an invasive species that's close to triggering an ecological collapse. But not if these python hunters have anything to do with it.Burmese pythons are huge compared to the native snakes in Florida. They can measure up to 20 feet and weigh 200 pounds. The females lay up to 100 eggs. And they eat just about everything, from animals as small as a mouse to as big as a bobcat or an alligator. And they're causing immense destruction throughout the Everglades ecosystem. So much so, that there is a team of bounty hunters out to catch and kill as many as they can. So I've traveled to South Florida to meet two of the best.Check out the behind the scenes footage of the 10-foot Burmese python capture.Follow us on Instagram @thewildpod and @chrismorganwildlife
This week on A Podcast About Catholic Things, Eric (The Ambassador of Common Sense) and Dan (The Ambassador of Nonsense) discuss one of the age-old subjects that most podcasters have talked about many times already. But this time, they address a very specific sentiment that the priests and bishops have left with people--and still have yet to answer. Many people who were not directly affected by the priest's abuse, were still felt feeling as if they had been duped into being faithful Catholics--and because of this, hesitate to rejoin God's Holy Church. In current events, major credic card companies cut ties with Pornhub. H5N8 (a recent bird flu in Asia) is wreaking havoc in Japan and other Asian countries. Covid19 lockdowns return--surprise, surprise. US defense bill gives immunity to social platforms, and Trump wants to veto… but is outnumbered. South Korea bans propaganda leaflets being sent to North Korea. William Barr (the major fail) is gone. Switzerland and Vietnam labeled currency manipulators. In the world of nonsense, Florida is plagued by Burmese Pythons and uses dogs to track them down. The duo discuss the destruction of natural habitats for human development, the division of nature by highways, and the huge invasive species issue… Iguanas, Burmese Pythons and Lion Fish, we are looking at you! On top of that Ellen talks about how you can decide which American Zoos to support! She is an avid zoo fan, so talks about how to spot a great collection and the differences between the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Zoological Association of America (ZAA). Now… that all seems awfully serious, but do not worry, nothing stops Jack and Ellen from having a few laughs along the way! It should also be noted that last week Ellen talked all about her favourite local species. This included chats about snapping turtles, bison, alligators, anoles, cotton mouths, spoonbills, scrub jays and manatees. So, if you haven't checked that out, go back and have a listen! Finding the perfect problem is like falling in love. You can't always choose the when or the what, but when it happens, you need to be ready to take action. In the second half of this two-part episode with Jim McKelvey, author of The Innovation Stack, we dive into the ways that finding your perfect problem parallels falling in love, and why having a lot of money doesn't solve all business problems; often it creates more. More About Jim: Jim McKelvey is a glassblower, father, entrepreneur, author, aviator, computer programmer, chairman of the St. Louis Federal Reserve, and inventor, and that is just scratching the surface. As for where to connect? As he puts it, “Please don't ask me to connect on Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram. I'm not there. I've got better things to do. And frankly, so do you.”
How can you find — and attempt the great feat of solving — your perfect problem? That's what I'm talking about today with my guest, Square co-founder Jim McKelvey. His book, The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time, is one of the funniest and most engaging business books I've read. We met at TED through our mutual friend Jon Levy, and had the great joy of recording together in person at a studio in midtown Manhattan. In the first half of this two-part episode, we delve into fending off an attack from “the perfect predator” of competition, Amazon. And frankly, so do you.” “People who want to build something new often feel they lack sufficient expertise. Their assertion is correct, but not complete. The same lack of expertise applies to everyone on the planet. Innovation has no experts.” —Jim McKelvey

We talked about the breeding process and how it varies from other exotic animal species, and how the Ball Python has some unique aspects that lend itself well to this process. We discussed the stigma with working in the exotics market and even touched on the growing problem of wild Burmese Pythons that are invading the Florida Everglades, and what really may be to blame for it. In Gary, Indiana, the port-o-potties sing Halleluiah in world's largest light show.

Lots of Our Assumptions about America's Healthcare System Are WrongGuest: Arthur Garson, MD, Director, Health Policy Institute, Texas Medical Center, Co-Author of “Exposing the 20 Medical Myths: Why Everything You Know About Health Care is Wrong and How to Make it Right.”Twenty-five cents out of every dollar Americans spend on healthcare is wasted, according to a study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. That wasted money isn't making us any healthier. It's not improving the quality of the care we receive. It's just down the drain. How can the richest, most developed country in the world be so wasteful when it comes to the thing that matters most to us? Well, for one thing, pediatric cardiologist Arthur Garson says we're holding on to a lot of misconceptions about how health care works in America. Veterans Hunt Invasive Florida PythonsGuest: Tom Rahill, Founder of Swamp ApesFlorida's Everglades are crawling with thousands of Burmese Pythons, and they're destroying the ecosystem. It's such a huge problem that the state government has turned to bounty hunters to track down pythons and kill them. Tom Rahill is an IT guy by day and a snake hunter by night. But for him, it's about more than the money or saving the Everglades-its therapy. Rahill believes python hunting especially helps veterans and runs a non-profit called Swamp Apes to bring them along. Overcoming A Key Hurdle Toward a Future of 3D Printed OrgansGuest: Mark Skylar-Scott, PhD, Research Associate, Harvard's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired EngineeringAll over the world, scientists are trying to figure out how to make a human organ. Just imagine if instead of waiting for a heart transplant, a patient's own cells could be coaxed to grow a new heart. There have been some amazing breakthroughs along those lines, but one of the main problems is how to make sure that all the newly-grown cells coming together in the shape of a heart get the blood and oxygen they need to thrive. They don't just automatically leave room for blood vessels as they grow, it turns out. And so inevitably, the inside cells die off as the new tissue gets thicker. Researchers at Harvard have figured out how to make artificial blood vessels in lab-grown tissues using a strange kind of 3D printing. Hmong Stories: “We Had to Use Our Words Like Money, to Make Our Place in the World”Guest: Kao Kalia Yang, Activist, Teacher, Author of “The Latehomecomer,” “The Song Poet,” and “A Map Into the World”Kao Kalia Yang was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and came to the United States when she was 6 years old. In Laos, her home country, people like her were the target of genocide because many of the men had helped America fight communists during the Vietnam War. Today Kao Kalia Yang is a leading voice for the stories of her people –the Hmong. She's written several acclaimed memoirs, including “The Latehomecomer” and “The Song Poet.” In October, she'll publish her first picture book, “A Map Into the World.” How Aquarium Hobbyists Are Saving Fish SpeciesGuest: Kapil Mandrekar, PhD Student at State University of New York College of Environmental Science and ForestryThe world's freshwater lakes, rivers and streams are under tremendous pressure from pollution and thirsty people and crops. As a result, the fish in those freshwater habitats are also under serious threat. It's time for an all-hands-on-deck approach to saving them, says fish ecologist Kapil Mandrekar. And that means scientists need to work more closely with fish fans who have home aquariums as a hobby. We haven't had a blood python show on Reptile Radio in a while, and last week's guest Steven Tillis was kind enough to agree to indulge us in one for this episode. So strap in and enjoy, as we find out what environmental ecology students in Florida with a taste for herpetology actually do when they're not studying for a test at school. There will be Glades talk!
