You Can Swim Here, But You Really, Really Shouldn't

There are places in the world that look like they're inviting you for a swim, but you should never really do it! Jacob's Well down in Texas is this mesmerizing natural spring, all clear and inviting, but it's got these crazy underwater caves that can suck you in faster than you can say 'cannonball.' Hanakapiai Beach in Hawaii is like paradise found, with its golden sands and turquoise waves, but those rip currents are sneaky little devils, ready to drag unsuspecting swimmers out to sea. Fraser Island off the coast of Australia is a dreamland with its pristine beaches, but the waters are teeming with jellyfish that'll give you a sting you won't forget. It's like Mother Nature's reminding us that beauty can come with a bite, or in this case, a gulp. From tiny zooxanthellae to the giant clam, the Great Barrier Reef is known around the world for its incredible biodiversity. But what does the word 'biodiversity' actually mean, and more importantly, why does it matter? In our debut episode of Reef in Focus, we welcome the Reef Authority's Acting Director of Reef Education and Engagement Fiona Merida into the studio to tackle the topic of biodiversity on the Great Barrier Reef.Long before Fiona studied to become a marine biologist - indeed long before she knew what a marine biologist was - she would spend her leisure time accompanying her dad on hiking trips along the coast of her native Victoria. But it was a trip to tropical North Queensland as a child, when the family crossed the border and made the pilgrimage north - first to K'gari (Fraser Island), then Airlie Beach where she gleaned her first glimpse of the Great Barrier Reef - that would literally change her life.More: reefauthority.gov.au/podcast

Lady Elliot Island is a destination that epitomises eco-centric tourism.  It is a true reflection of the dedication, hard work, focus and drive afforded to her by so many people over the years, past and present, and none more so than the island's current custodian, Peter Gash.I am elated to host Peter on the show and discuss not only his success in realising his dreams so far but also the island's successes.  Peter has dedicated a lifetime to the islands in this region and first visited Lady Elliot as a child, and was instantly struck by its beauty and mysticism.Lady Elliot is approximately 80 kilometres northeast of Bundaberg and is nestled between Fraser Island and Lady Musgrave Island.  The is also the closest Great Barrier Reef island to Brisbane, Queensland's southern capital.  lady Elliot Island lies within a Marine National Park ‘Green Zone' and forms part of Australia's World Heritage Listed Area on the Great Barrier Reef.Though I'm yet to visit Lady Elliot Island, I can tell there is something very special about this location. Obviously, it is stunning; a spectacular tropical destination that's apart from the bustle of everyday life, not to mention a scuba diver's dream; but it's much more than that.  Through minimal digital connectivity, it forces visitors to put down their smartphones and realise the beauty of a moment, our earth, our ocean and our home  - but not viewed through a screen enhanced by Photoshop and alike.  Much more importantly, Lady Elliot is not an example, but THE example of what we can do for our earth and its inhabitants when we focus, dedicate and commit to doing the right thing. As for the man making this happen, you won't find him on social media at all, he's far too busy working on the next major project and looking after this island paradise.  You can, however, read more about him on their webpage, better still, go and pay him a visit!!Scuba GOAT is an independent production and can be found across all social media platforms.  Are you a dive pro or operator? Do you know your location? Do you want to increase your customer base? Getting up there - episode 24!! Welcome back!! We are so happy to release this podcast, as this one is a mix of professional advice and adventure stories and goes out to all of you listeners to embrace your true ATHLETE. Our guest, Dempsey Ormrod, a Sunshine Coast Myotherapist and Exercise Physiologist through his own practice Myo Mechanics, gives his insights on how no matter skill, activity, or age that all of us everyday adventurers should treat our bodies to some good TLC! Finishing his studies at University of Sunshine Coast (USC), Dempsey started out at a clinic in Buderim until gaining the experience he needed to move into his own practice which is what he has been doing for about 6 years now.  Dempsey also talks to us about his awesome 4WD adventures in his kitted out Defender with his fiance and his two dogs, Kiara and Joey, going to Stradbroke Island, K'gari (Fraser Island), and planning a trip up to Cape York. Many of these adventures he also does with a group, British Mafia.  Being an advocate for health and ending 2021 on a serious health scare, Dempsey urges everyone to listen to your body, in whatever way it is trying to talk to you, and find yourself a good practitioner - whether that be a sports therapist to keep you healthy through your adventures, or a good general practitioner to help you find out why something just doesn't feel right.  Dempsey has such a positive attitude through everything, and some great insights on how we can all take care of ourselves better. If you want to get in touch with Dempsey, hop over to his business page or follow him on Instagram @_dormrod.  Thanks again for listening, we know you'll get a lot of out of this episode! Episode 19! Leif Christensen joined us in the “studio” while visiting from Adelaide for a chat about what being an everyday adventurer means to him.  Leif shares with us how an exchange program, living in Brazil for a year after leaving school stimulated his interest in experiencing other cultures and places. This passion has seen Leif travel and adventure all over Australia and beyond, both for fun; for fundraising and also for work, as a trained social worker, leading 100km hikes for children while working in an adventure therapy and guide role for Operation Flinders.  Leif since retrained as a firefighter and we chat about how work and adventure tie in together. He shares with us a whole range of missions he has completed including his self-named project “Six Trails for Change”, taking part in ultra distance trail runs, including the Rapid Ascent “Triple Crown”, as well as summiting the 6812m peak Mount Ama Dablam in Nepal and fastpacking the Great Walk on K'gari (formerly known as Fraser Island). Leif has been riding motorbikes since he was 18, and attempted a fundraising ride from London to Cape Town, while also recently taking part in the challenging and somewhat quirky “Postie Bike Challenge” riding an old “postie bike” 1000km over four days in the Flinders Ranges and remote Outback South Australia, raising funds for the Apex Copper Coast Retreats, supporting families impacted by cancer.  Leif also shares with us intentions for the year ahead including racing Ultra Trail Australia 100km and climbing Mount Cook in New Zealand.  We finish with a chat about how through working in the fire service, Leif now volunteers with his kelpie, Boston, training as a search and rescue dog as part of the Urban Search and Rescue taskforce. You can find Leif on Instagram at @leif_c  We (…Sarah) apologises for the feature guest - Ness - who was fairly vocal during this interview.  If you're enjoying these episodes and interested in supporting us on Patreon please head across to www.patreon.com/intotheweehourspodcast We are so grateful for every contribution which "helps keep the lights on"!

We're excited to bring you Episode 14 of the Into the Wee Hours Podcast and this really interesting chat with Rob Saunders. In this episode we talk to Brisbane based, Rob Saunders - the man behind the heartfelt documentary - In the Footsteps of John Stuart. This short film is currently touring in Australia with the Wild film festival.  It covers Rob's incredible, personal and historical journey to find his great uncle John's grave in an unrecorded location on a Tasmanian mountainside, following a tragic climbing and exploration expedition in 1956 which ended in John's death.  We would certainly encourage you to check out the film - you can view a trailer of In the Footsteps of John Stuart here. We mainly focus on the development and making of the film, which involved a challenging expedition into the wilds of Tasmania for Rob and a select team of friends. We chat to Rob about many aspects of what a remote bushwalking and climbing adventure like this entails; not to mention the comparison between wilderness adventures for his Great Uncle in the 1950s, compared to now.  We also chat about the logistics behind filming your own adventure, and touch briefly on Rob's recent trip to k'Gari (previously known as Fraser Island) and his aspirations to create another adventure based film. As is becoming the case with many of the awesome everyday adventurers we chat to, we barely scratched the surface of Rob's adventure knowledge and experience!  We also have some big news! We've launched an Into the Wee Hours Podcast Patreon account. As much as we're doing this for fun, podcasting certainly doesn't come without its own financial costs - and we would be sooooo grateful if any of you listening would be inclined to throw a few dollars our way. There's absolutely no pressure, but if you're curious you can check us out on patreon - https://www.patreon.com/intotheweehourspodcast We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and seas where this podcast is being recorded. On Episode 98 we chat to Scott Mitchell who is the director of the Fraser Coast Fishing Alliance. The FCFA is a non profit organisation that's sole purpose is the see an improved ecosystem in and around the pristine waters of the Great Sandy Straights Marine park which is inside the world heritage listed Fraser Island. The main focus for the group at the moment is removing the anomaly of allowing inshore commercial netting within a designated yellow zone which is essentially the nurseries of the marine ecosystem. This anomaly ( indicated by red lines on GSMP maps) is unique worldwide to this area!! This is an issue close to both of the hosts, but for you as an angler, to pass this off as it doesn't apply to me, you are wrong!! This is a case of industry and commercial gain trumping environmental concerns and the concerns of those who use this marine park recreationally. If the FCFA doesn't get the support of you the recreational angler, no matter where you live in Australia or the world, your apathy is part of the problem. Go to the Fraser Coast Fishing Alliance and read what you can do, it will take hardly any time compared to scouting the flats in search of fish that are declining faster than ever.
