What's it like to get bit by a venomous snake? "It's like a bee sting times a thousand," Tim Friede says. Tim would know. Over the past few decades, he's let himself be bitten over 200 times by all kinds of venomous snakes — black mambas, taipans, cobras, kraits and more. With time, he's gradually built immunity to multiple types of venom. Could scientists help him share that immunity with others? Science reporter Ari Daniel joins Short Wave to explain how antivenom works, what scientists discovered and where the research may lead. Plus, what does Tim Friede have in common with Princess Bride?Want to hear about more medical discoveries? Cobras, taipans, black mambas — Tim Friede's been intentionally bitten more than 200 times by some of the most venomous snakes on Earth. And he survived, mostly because years of self-injecting venom let him develop immunity to them.(Please do not try this yourself!)Now his blood's been used to make a broad-spectrum antivenom that researchers say may protect against nearly 20 deadly snakes. But this is not how antivenom is usually made. So how are snake antivenoms produced, and where are we with a "universal" version?

A recent study in the journal Nature unveiled new proteins that can neutralize the deadliest of snake venoms. They're “new” in that they aren't found in nature—they were created in a lab, dreamed up by AI.Using AI to discover, or design, the building blocks of drugs is a fast-growing area of research. Another team of scientists out of Philadelphia is using AI to discover new antibiotics by resurrecting long-lost molecules from extinct species like neanderthals and woolly mammoths. We know what you're thinking: It sounds too sci-fi to be true.Flora Lichtman talks with two pioneers in the field about how AI is supercharging drug discovery: Dr. César de la Fuente, bioengineer and presidential associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and Nobel laureate Dr. David Baker, director of the Institute for Protein Design and professor at the University of Washington in Seattle.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.For our Los Angeles listeners: We're working on a story about the toxins left behind by the fires and we want to hear from you. How is this affecting you? Are you worried about the air and water and soil? How are you approaching clean-up? Conversations is bringing you a summer treat — a collection of Sarah's most memorable guests through out the years. Brendan James Murray tells the story of the hunt to capture the Australian coastal taipan, and the quest to create the world's first taipan antivenom in his book Venom. Listen here to Sarah's other Conversation with Brendan James MurrayThe story of George Rosendale, a 19-year old from Hopevale North Queensland, became the stuff of legend when he survived being bitten by a coastal taipan. One bite from the snake was usually lethal.Brendan James Murray unearthed George's story when researching a book about snakes. He became fascinated by the near-hysteria surrounding the search for the coastal taipan in northern Australia after WWII. This species had been thought of as a myth by Europeans until 1933, when local Indigenous people led naturalist Donald Thompson to a living specimen. To the Wikmunkan tribe, the snake was known as the Nguman, and it was seen as a part of the landscape, but best avoided. For Europeans, the discovery of a living taipan began a scramble for an anti-venom for the lightning-fast snake with hooded eyes, which could kill with one strike. This episode of Conversations contains discussions about taipans, brown snakes, venom, antivenom, Australian fauna, reptiles, Australian history, poison, poisonous snake, Queensland, hospital, lethal venom, author, biology, medical research, snake bites

Snake bites kill tens of thousands of people around the world each year. But we still use techniques invented in the late 19th century to make antivenom, and each bite needs to be treated with antivenom for that specific type of snake. We hear from two scientists whose recent breakthroughs – and failures – could save many more lives and help achieve the holy grail: a universal antivenom. Featuring Stuart Ainsworth, senior lecturer at the University of Liverpool in the UK and Christoffer Vinther Sørensen, postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Antibody Technologies at the Technical University of Denmark. This episode was written and produced by Katie Flood, with assistance from Mend Mariwany. Discover expert tips on rattlesnake safety & bite prevention. Learn about antivenom availability & treatment protocols. Stay safe outdoors! Episode 184 Details UNDERSTANDING RATTLESNAKE BEHAVIOR & DANGER TO STAY SAFE Rattlesnakes exhibit various behaviors influenced by their habitat and surroundings. Learning about their habits can significantly reduce the risk of an encounter turning into a dangerous situation. Understanding snake behavior & habitat is crucial for staying safe. In recent years, it has been documented that not all rattlesnakes' tails rattles. This has been discovered in rattlesnakes in both South Dakota's Badlands and in California. Know your snakes before venturing outdoors! Immediate Actions In Case of a Bite In the event of a rattlesnake bite, swift action is vital. The best defense is to have a set of car keys and a designated driver on hand. Calling 911 for an ambulance or Life Flight while en route to the hospital is essential to minimize delays in treatment. Prompt medical attention is critical to counteract the venom's effects. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms, so keeping the victim calm is paramount during transit to medical facilities. Access to Antivenom & Treatment Protocol Antivenom, such as CROFAB, is available in various medical facilities across the region. Understanding the availability and administration of antivenom can significantly improve outcomes for snakebite victims. Knowing where antivenom is stocked and how to administer it can be life-saving. Hospitals can prepare the antivenom in advance, reducing treatment delays upon the victim's arrival. Educating oneself about rattlesnake behavior, proper emergency response procedures, and access to medical treatment are crucial for minimizing the risks associated with snakebites. By staying informed and prepared, individuals can navigate outdoor environments safely and confidently. In this episode of the Prolonged Fuel Care Podcast, Dr. Ben Abo and Jordan Benjamin discuss snake envenomation. They debunk common myths about snakebite treatment, such as using tourniquets, extractors, ice, or cutting into the wound. They emphasize the importance of preparing for deployment in snake-infested areas by researching the local hazards and having the appropriate equipment. They provide a standardized snake bite assessment method, which involves a bottom-up top-down approach to identify the type of venom and the severity of the envenomation. They also discuss the decision-making process for airway management and the use of antivenom. The solution to snakebite envenomation is early and appropriate treatment with antivenom. It is important to irrigate the bite site and dilute the venom as quickly as possible. The use of tourniquets is not recommended, and if one is already applied, it should be slowly released. Pain management is crucial, and opioids and ketamine are effective options. Monitoring the progression of symptoms is more important than assigning a grade to the envenomation. Early intervention and proper training in snakebite management can lead to better outcomes. Takeaways Do not use tourniquets, extractors, ice, or cutting into the wound for snakebite treatment. Research the local hazards and have the appropriate equipment when deploying to snake-infested areas. Use a standardized snake bite assessment method to identify the type of venom and the severity of the envenomation. Make decisions about airway management based on the patient's symptoms and use tools like capnography and pulse oximetry. In this episode of Causes or Cures, Dr. Eeks chats with venom expert Tim Friede about his twenty plus years' "unusual" journey with the world's most venomous snakes: Tim purposely injected himself with diluted venom at escalating doses until he achieved a level of hyperimmunity unknown to humans. Working by himself in his Wisconsin home, Tim achieved the uncanny ability of being purposely bitten by the world's deadliest snakes, including cobras, rattlers, black mambas, et al and surviving with no major side effects. He has been bitten by snakes at least 200 times. He has had some close calls, which he discusses in the podcast. Understanding that his blood was an anomalous, potentially life-saving stew for future victims of snake bites, Time joined forces with Jacob Glanville, founder of biotechcompany Centivax to create the world's first fully human broad-spectrum antivenom. In the podcast, Tim explains how Centivax is using his blood to do this and where they are in their research to create universal antivenom. Do you sometimes feel stuck mourning a loss? In this message, Pastor Jamie will share how to deal with grief. Things I want you to know about grief:Grief is a normal, healthy response to loss, pain, and death.John 16:20aWater washes – in the natural we have to clean a wound. Think of crying as cleaning an emotional wound. There are two wrong ways to grieve: distraction and despair.1) Distraction is when we try to numb ourselves to how we feel. The problem is, you can't distract yourself out of grief. Feelings are meant to be felt. Talk it out with someone close to you or you'll take it out on someone close you.Proverbs 13:14Don't try to run from grief, instead run to God in your grief. 2) Despair is when grief becomes our identity.Psalm 31:10Don't wallow in your grief; worship in your grief and fight off despair. Christians follow Christ so we should grieve how Jesus grieved.Isaiah 53:3 John 11:35 "Jesus wept"How we grieve reveals what we believe. The best thing you can do for someone grieving is to just be there with them.Proverbs 18:13Grieving people don't need your mouth, they need your ears. God doesn't take away our grief—He adds good things to it.Antivenom doesn't remove the venom from the body, but bonds with the venom and causes it to no longer be harmful. God will add things to your life like "anti-grief" so that the grief won't harm you. Four things God will add to your grief:1. Peace.Philippians 4:6-7Thankfulness requires that you don't lose perspective on what you already have in order to receive something else. You can grieve and have peace at the same time, if you invite the Lord into your grief. 2. Joy.John 16:20Don't ask why, ask who. 3. Comfort.Matthew 5:4When you are grieving, you are now in a unique position to experience God in a way you've never experienced Him before.2 Corinthians 1:3-4God's comfort is an inexhaustible resource. When you give it away, you still keep it.4. Hope.1 Thessalonians 4:13-14If Jesus were to come back tonight, you'd get a front row seat to your loved-ones' resurrection. While walking through grief, face East. Almost every grave in every cemetery in the US is facing east. Why? Because Jesus will come back in the East. Even a bite from a "harmless" snake can cause infection or allergic reaction in some people. For your safety, treat all snakebites as if they were venomous and get to a hospital emergency room as quickly as possible. This is especially true if you aren't sure of the exact type of snake that bit you. With the correct treatment (antivenin), you can prevent severe illness or death. Antivenin, also called antivenom, is a treatment specific to the venom of a particular animal or insect."https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Timothy+6%3A3-7&version=ESV1 Timothy 6:[3] If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, [4] he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, [5] and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. [6] But godliness with contentment is great gain, [7] for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?”https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13044947/California-weather-hurricane-force-winds.htmlFirst EVER hurricane alert issued for Central California as 97 PERCENT of state's population put under flood warning - as 'bomb cyclone' prepares to batter LA and millionaire playground of Santa Barbara - sparking emergency alert from Gov.
