Send us a Text Message.Joe Exotic, the flamboyant and controversial figure known as the Tiger King, captivated the world's attention with his larger-than-life personality, eccentric lifestyle, and entanglement in a web of legal troubles. Born Joseph Maldonado-Passage on March 5, 1963, Exotic rose to fame as the owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma.Exotic's life story reads like a script from a reality TV show, filled with drama, intrigue, and unexpected twists. With his signature bleach-blond mullet, flashy attire, and penchant for self-promotion, he became a cult figure in the world of exotic animal enthusiasts and gained notoriety through the Netflix docuseries "Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness."At the heart of the series is Exotic's bitter rivalry with Carole Baskin, the CEO of Big Cat Rescue, an animal sanctuary in Florida. Their feud, fueled by allegations of animal cruelty, exploitation, and a battle over the ethics of breeding big cats in captivity, escalated into a legal saga that would ultimately culminate in Exotic's downfall. One of the most compelling aspects of Exotic's story is his unconventional lifestyle and relationships. He was openly gay at a time when acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in rural America was limited, and his multiple marriages to younger men added another layer of intrigue to his persona. Exotic's unconventional personal life, combined with his unapologetic defiance of societal norms, endeared him to some while alienating others. However, behind the facade of charisma and showmanship, Exotic's life was fraught with turmoil and legal troubles. In 2019, he was convicted on 17 federal charges of animal abuse and two counts of murder for hire, stemming from a plot to kill Carole Baskin. He was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison, effectively ending his reign as the Tiger King.Despite his incarceration, Exotic's legacy continues to fascinate and polarize audiences around the world. The "Tiger King" phenomenon sparked debates about the ethics of exotic animal ownership, the treatment of animals in captivity, and the sensationalism of true crime entertainment. While some view Exotic as a symbol of rebellion against authority and societal norms, others condemn him as a symbol of exploitation and cruelty. Regardless of one's opinion, there's no denying that Joe Exotic's journey from roadside zookeeper to international sensation is a testament to the power of fame, the allure of the exotic, and the complexities of the human psyche. As the world awaits further developments in Exotic's legal saga, his story serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of unchecked ambition and the dangers of blurring the line between reality and fantasy. Whether he is remembered as a tragic figure or a villainous mastermind, Joe Exotic will forever remain an enigmatic and unforgettable character in the annals of pop culture history.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Hunting big cats can be controversial — just ask GearJunkie Hunt & Fish Editor Rachelle Schrute. In a recent opinion piece, Schrute took infamous big-cat hustler and CEO of Big Cat Rescue, Carole Baskin, to task over her statements and documented “fallacies” surrounding the topic. In her open letter, Schrute attempts to correct misunderstanding and educate others that Baskin’s statements may have misinformed in an opinion piece published by The Denver Post in October of 2023. The purpose of Baskin’s article was to “shed light” on the issues surrounding big cat hunting and to support Colorado’s ballot initiative to ban trophy hunting and trapping of wild cats. Her arguments center around the idea that hunting mountain lions or bobcats are for trophy hunting and not for the consumption of meat. We sit down with Schrute on The GearJunkie Podcast to digest her disagreements with Baskin and add greater context to the conversation. Carole Baskin is the CEO of Big Cat Rescue and megastar of the hit Netflix docuseries Tiger King. She runs a real estate business and manages 100+ volunteers and interns from around the world and 10 staff and contractors. She has run the Tampa based non-profit since 1992 and has garnered international attention to the plight of captive big cats on CNN, Animal Planet, Discovery, U.S. News & World Report, People Magazine, The Today Show, Sports Illustrated, Netflix, Wondery, all of the local media outlets and many more national and international programs. She is the host of the Cat Chat Show, a live interview with cat experts from around the world. Baskin joins The Work From Home Show to discuss Tiger King, its effect on work from homers during the height of the pandemic, its cultural and political impacts, how real estate has funded nearly every endeavor she's done, and what's next for her. Baskin has funded all her wild cat sanctuaries through real estate investing. She started buying any real estate in the 80's through foreclosure - primarily land, mobile home parks, and apartments. She now owns a ton of acreage. What's amazing is that she doesn't believe in debt and has paid for all of her real estate in cash. Her reasons for doing this make sense, especially once eviction moratoriums kicked in 2020. You won't want to miss this interview! Websites: www.BigCatTV.com www.bigcatrescue.org

“Hey all you cool cats and kittens!” Do you recognise this catch phrase at all? Of course you do, it's Carole Baskin - co-founder of the non-profit sanctuary Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. Whilst many people may have only recently heard about Big Cat Rescue through Netflix's 'Tiger King', the organisation has been caring and protecting wild cats for over thirty years. Carole, and her husband Howard have also been tireless advocates for ending private ownership of big cats in the US, resulting in the Big Cat Public Safety Act signed into US law in December 2022. In March 2023, Big Cat Rescue made a huge announcement - announcing that all the remaining cats at the centre would be relocated to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas and that they would sell the land where Big Cat Rescue is located. This is far from the end for Big Cat Rescue - it's the start of a new adventure in investing the expected millions from the property sale into conservation projects for cats in the wild. Guests: Howard Baskin - Big Cat Rescue Links Big Cat Rescue
Host, Billie Groom, chats with Howard Baskin of Big Cat Rescue in Florida, USA on the process, challenges, and eventual success (Dec 2022) in enacting a law preventing businesses from making money from "cub patting," We talk about the problems with your Everyday Joe thinking it's a good idea to own a big cat, and Exotic Joe convincing shopping mall owners it's a good idea to put big cats on display.

Death threats, lawsuits, media attention… None of this was on Howard's mind when he met and fell in love with Carole. In part two of our talk with Howard Baskin, we learn even more about what he went through and how it felt to handle the public after Joe Exotic came into their lives. Once free to live in their town and talk to people in public every day, Howard watch Carole narrow her world more and more in order to protect herself. Now that things are getting back to more “business as usual,” their dedication to saving Big Cats is stronger than ever. Let's listen as Howard tells Linda and Rita more about Big Cat Rescue, and shares how YOU can help make a difference, too. EPISODE NOTES: Part Two of Our Interview with Howard Baskin
We all know who Carole Baskin is; she is the fearless champion of Big Cats everywhere. Big Cat Rescue was opened by Carole in 1992 as a safe haven for exotic cats who have been mistreated or displaced. And, of course, by now her name is synonymous with Tiger King Joe Exotic (more on that later...) Aside from all the drama, what you may not know is that Carole and her devoted husband Howard Baskin, along with many volunteers and politicians, worked tirelessly for years to get the Big Cat Public Safety Act which passed into law this past December. This bipartisan legislation ends the private possession and trade of these exotic cats, so no more cats and cubs can be harmed. Howard undertook this challenge head on, and in the process has become a well-known advocate for those beautiful big cats. Rita and Linda enjoyed chatting with Howard and learned so much about the cats, the legislation, and perhaps a tidbit or two about Joe Exotic (and a few other people) too. We think you will be as fascinated as they were! EPISODE NOTES: Howard Baskin and Big Cat Rescue

Big Cat Rescue's bobcat rehab team released two more rehabbed wild bobcats, Makani and Kekoa, back to the wild. Both bobcats took one last look back at the group before darting off to the woods together. As nature intended, these two wild cats now know the freedom that is their birthright. They are now free to live a natural life in the wilderness of Florida. It is exciting and a little sad for those who have watched these two wildcats grow from kittens into feisty adults ready to take on the challenge of thriving in the wild. Exciting to know these two wild bobcats will have great adventures and know there are no more cages for these two cats. Sad, because we will miss them. However, we are far more excited for them than we are sad for ourselves. The rehab team, led by Jamie Veronica, puts a lot of time and great effort into finding large forest areas that have plenty of space, prey, and water, and are as far from humans as possible. Now, they can sleep under the stars with no wire to look through. Join us in wishing these two precious wildcats the best as they are now home for Christmas. We hope their holiday season is filled with the joy of freedom. We recently wished Kali the tiger a happy 22nd birthday. In the wild, tigers usually live between 8 and 12 years of age. When provided exceptional veterinary care, a good nutritious diet, and top notch care, like here at Big Cat Rescue, their lifespans can be doubled. Join us in wishing Kali a Happy Birthday! Please join Big Cat Rescue in raising funds for International Tiger Day 2022, to continue our support of The Corbett Foundation protecting Tigers in India, and also support our own tiger residents! With your help we are hoping to raise funds to support boots on the ground frontline forest rangers in Pench Tiger Reserve. Pench Tiger Reserve is one of the most premier and critical habitats for Tigers in Central India and faces threats from poaching, habitat loss, and habitat fragmentation. The frontline personnel work in extremely harsh and dense forest conditions, with meager resources in an effort to protect Tigers, their prey and the habitat. Funds from this International Tiger Day will go towards providing them with essentials such as proper footwear, flashlights, raincoats, mosquito nets, filters for drinking water and field kits that would make their living conditions more comfortable and much safer! Hey all you cool cats and kittens, Carole Baskin steps Behind The Rope! Since so much has happened in the world of Big Cats and Tiger Kings since Ms. Baskin was here last, we did the only thing we could think of - call her back for more! Carole is here to chat about many of the real life events which have taken place since our last chat - Joe Exotic being re-sentenced for Murder for Hire which could potentially lead to shorter jail time, his announcement that he is accepting applications in jail for a boyfriend, his desire for this search for love to become Netflix' new break out show, “Bachelor King” - no really, Google it, and Joe's ex boyfriend Dillon Passage's own announcement that he has found love in the form of his new seemingly age appropriate, Instagram official, boyfriend John. Carole also chats about the new Peacock Series, “Joe VS Carole” starting John Cameron Mitchell (“Hedwig" Shout Out) as Joe Exotic and Kate McKinnon as Carole. Speaking of actresses to play Carole, the last time she was here she listed Meryl Streep as her top choice. We share an update on that - has she heard from Meryl and how did that conversation go? Finally, we all know Carole can dance a la Dancing With The Stars (yes, we chat Tyra!), but we get to know the most famous woman in all of Big Cat Rescue chatting about what she likes to do for fun, what is going on in the world of Big Cat Rescue today and just what is next for this fearless powerhouse that is unapologetically committed to her cause of Big Cat Rescue who won't ever stop until all the cats are safe.
