The first sound Claire Smith heard when she landed in Australia from the UK was the carolling song of a nearby magpie. Her many books on Australian native birds have been ground-breaking.Listen to Gisela's other conversation with Sarah Kanowski here. Many assumptions about the nature of birds and their behaviour are completely wrong when applied to Australian birds.Gisela Kaplan was a professor of sociology when a magpie nestling she was hand raising bonded closely with her, followed her about, and learned to speak. Her curiosity about birds became so strong she switched careers to become a field biologist and animal behaviourist.Based in Armidale NSW, Gisela has conducted extensive research into avian behaviour. Her second PhD was a study of the songs of Australian magpies.Gisela's many books on Australian native birds have changed the way these creatures are understood.Along with her teaching, writing and research in ornithology, Gisela has been a wildlife carer for 25 years, raising countless birds of all ages. This episode of Conversations contains discussion around birds, native Australian animals, Australian fauna, magpies, cockatoos, tawny frogmouths, owls, galahs, domestic pets, animal rehabilitation, animal rescue, Australian wildlife, Australian bush, animal behaviour, ornithology, biology, field biology, wildlife carers, bird rearing, bird release, Bird Bonds.

In this episode we are continuing our road trip doing the Lap of Tasmania.  We start off by discovering Tasmania's highest waterfall, and we tell you about the unique way to reach the bottom of the falls. Our lunch spot was one of those places that you can only discover on a road trip. Lake Rosebery at Tullah was idyllic. Finally, we found our way to our accommodation in the world famous Cradle Mountain national park. If there is one place that people have heard of in Tassie – it is Cradle Mountain.  It is almost too beautiful to describe with its snow covered mountain peaks, ancient rainforests, glacial lakes and abundance of unique Australian Wildlife – it is breathtaking. We share which walks and hikes to do, how best to explore the national park, where to stay and the best way to see those adorable Aussie animals.  In fact, I share my favourite Aussie animal, and how excited I was to see some and a very, very interesting fact about these little furry creatures, that I guarantee you have not heard before! Lastly, we head north to Stanley and the famous "Nut" – which is very unusual looking large rock formation that can be seen for miles. We take you up the nut, tell you how it was formed, and wander around the top to see the best views of Bass Straight and the beaches of Stanley. One of our favourite things about Stanley was the seafood – and no wonder as all the local restaurants source the freshest local catches straight of the boats each day – just think, lobsters, crayfish, scallops and oysters – yum! We share the best places to experience the local seafood and where to stay when visiting Stanley. We hope you enjoy episode 46 which is Part 2 of our Tasmanian road trip. The Bird Emergency

The Bird Emergency

Predation by feral cats is one of the biggest threats to the unique wildlife of Australia. The WA Feral Cat Working Group is working to reduce the threat. Feral cats are a major threat to wildlife in Australia, with their predation causing declines in many native species. These non-native predators were introduced to the continent by European settlers and have since spread widely to almost all of the continent, causing significant damage to the delicate ecosystem. Feral cats prey on a wide range of animals, including small mammals, reptiles, and birds. They are particularly dangerous to ground-dwelling birds, such as the endangered Malleefowl, as well as small marsupials, such as the Bilby, but no animal is safe from this voraceous predator. The impact of feral cats on Australia's wildlife is significant, with estimates suggesting that they kill several millions of native animals each year. This is not only devastating for individual species, but also for the overall biodiversity of the ecosystem. The predation pressure from feral cats can lead to declines in population numbers, which can ultimately lead to local extinction. Conservation efforts, such as trap-neuter-return programs, are being implemented in an effort to control the population and mitigate the impact of feral cats on wildlife. However, it is essential that such efforts are continued and expanded in order to protect Australia's unique and fragile wildlife. Grant spoke with ecologist, Judy Dunlop, from the WA Feral Cat Working Group, about the group, the scale of the threat posed by feral cats, and the Group's upcoming symposium.  This week our ramblings are not of a veterinary nature as we are sitting down with the awe-inspiring Marny Cringle to hear about her incredible story of surviving and thriving against the odds. We also discuss her success in wheelchair tennis, her love of playing the violin, our experiences with Australian wildlife and much more!'Marny Cringle was living the dream. At 26 she was travelling the world, making a living as a registered nurse in London and playing the violin for the Fulham Symphony Orchestra. She was fit and active, playing tennis, running and swimming. On the first of December 1996 things changed completely. On a typical Sunday evening in London Marny waited with a friend on an underground station platform, just like thousands of people do every evening. A tube train sped past the platform and in a split second Marny was under the train and being dragged along. Marny's leg was torn off, her head was smashed like an eggshell, her eyes had popped out of their sockets, five discs in her back were broken, part of her brain was missing (and what was left was partially exposed), and both of her lungs had collapsed and were filled with blood. These are just some of Marny's injuries. Having been working as a trauma nurse, Marny was now in a trauma ward. Unconscious, and with virtually no chance of survival, today Marny is living a new dream. She is living an independent life, working again as a registered nurse and walking on two legs – albeit one of them is a bionic leg.'https://www.marnycringle.com.au/about-marny/

Predators, prey and moonlight singing: how phases of the Moon affect Australian wildlifeLast week Alice Gorman, an Associate Professor in Archeology and Space Studies at Flinders University, told us about the need to conserve the Moon's environment and protect it from potential exploitation by mining interests. This week we hear from three early career researchers, Ashton Dickerson, University of Melbourne, Grant Linley, Charles Sturt University and Kate Senior, University of Melbourne, about the way phases of the Moon affect Australian wildlife. They tell us what attracted them to environmental sciences, what they're discovering through their research and how they felt when they heard about a recent study showing that environmental scientists are being silenced. How business organisations shafted climate policy in Australia and their sudden about faceDr Marc Hudson is a post-doctoral fellow with the Centre for Understanding Sustainable Prosperity at Keele University. We speak with him about that history,  his paper,  A bit rich: business groups want urgent climate action after resisting it for 30 years, and speculate about why the sudden change from industry groups represented on the Climate Roundtable.

WARNING: The content gets slightly graphic when discussing the realities of poaching in South Africa. Our guest for today is Chloe Buiting – an Australian vet & wildlife conservationist who grew up in Lord Howe Island, Australia. She knew from a young age that she wanted to dedicate herself to protect wildlife and ended up going to veterinary school. One of her more interesting placements was in South Africa, where she was involved in things like capturing giraffes, dehorning rhinos (to try to protect them from poachers) & working with wild cats. We also learn of a unique men's Calvin Klein scent that draws in the wild cats - which you will learn about once you listen! We also talk about: - Life as a veterinary student, including placements; - The realities of poaching in South Africa & the big debate over what to do with the horns of the rhinoceros; - What it's like to capture a giraffe in the wild (hint: you need a helicopter!); - The importance of ecotourism (including gorilla work in the DRC, Rwanda & Uganda), Thailand's first - Working with amputee elephants out of the world's first prosthetic hospital for elephants in Chiang Mai; - Being on the front line in the 2020 Australian Wildlife (the fire went right up to her backyard in Kangaroo Island!); - The future of veterinary medicine (hint: 3D printing beaks for toucan is already a reality!); - Whether you can make money as a vet; and - What WE can do to support wildlife conservation efforts.
