Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we're discussing every album by Hot Snakes. Led by the prolific guitar duo of Rick Froberg and John Reis (Drive Like Jehu, Rocket from the Crypt, Obits), Hot Snakes takes the post-hardcore technicality of Drive Like Jehu and condenses into shorter and more energetic song structures. An incredible band whose life was cut short due to the untimely death of Froberg in 2023. This week we have our longest episode yet as we take a deep dive into the work of Rick Froberg, the singer of Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu and Obits who sadly passed away in June 2023. Enlisting the help of post-punk encyclopaedia, and literal Doctor in punk music, our friend Ferruccio Quercetti, we take a real good look at the work of Nick Froberg through the lens of Hot Snakes. With work on their fifth album said to be nearing completion at the time of his passing, this episode serves as a tribute to the man's talent. Whilst we do mostly focus on Hot Snakes for most of this episode, we do touch on every project he, and John Reis, have been part of to some extent. We didn't want to dwell on the other projects too long though, as there's a really good chance we'll come back and do episodes on Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt at some point in the future. Both Chris and Ferro chose their favourite Hot Snakes albums for this episode. Sucide Invoice, the band's second album, is Chris' pick, whilst Ferro plumps for their third album, Audit in Progress. Now that isn't to say that one is necessarily better than the other - truth be told, all four of their albums are really bloody good - but Chris and Ferro have their reasons for picking these two specifically, and we get into that in this episode. Along the way we also cite a ton of other bands that influenced Rick, as well as a whole bunch more bands that were influenced by him too. So please, grab yourself a beverage of any kind, raise it in a toast to Rick Froberg, and get stuck into this monster episode.

Episode 80 is a celebration of Rick Froberg's life and a celebration of life in general. I'm flying solo here, strolling down memory lane on a summer morning. When I started the TMpod I did so with the goal of connecting and reconnecting with old friends and sharing those conversations with whoever might want to listen. Rick was an early guest (Episode 15) because he was top of my list of people I wanted to reconnect with. I always loved the guy even though we hadn't hung out in years. I always loved making him laugh and we did laugh together again on that episode which felt great. I had his name on my list of guests I wanted to have back on the pod but I was waiting until the new Hot Snakes record was out to have him on again, I see now that was a mistake. Lesson learned: don't wait! Much love to all Ricks family, friends and fans. His memory, music and art live on in all of us who have been touched by his life and work. This episode is dedicated to the life, music and art of Rick Froberg, singer and guitarist for the bands Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, and Obits. I can remember the first time I heard Pitchfork at Fallout records in Seattle. From the moment I heard his cracking voice, the hooky jangle of his riffs, I was hooked on everything Rick. His stage presence, his vinegary and potent version of Fuck The Man messaging and of course his visual art that delivered the same message in such a beautifully sarcastic fashion. I had that chance to spend time with Rick here and there over the years, and I feel so fortunate to know him on and off the stage . I'll always remember that constant half smirk that somehow both intimidated me and brought me in to his warmth at the same time. If you are unfamiliar with Rick's body of work both visually and musically, seek it out and enjoy. Portland, Oregon's Bothers have just announced the release of their sophomore LP “II” on San Antonio/PDX label Dirt Cult Records. The band's self-titled debut album was a concise and raging lesson in relentless punk 'n' roll, with tips of the hat to bands like Motörhead, and Hot Snakes. ‘II' marks a new era for the band. Heavier and more expansive, the album ventures into the realm of metalic hardcore with fiercesome riffing and dynamic tempo changes. The melodic intensity of their first release remains, resulting in an album that calls to mind influences like Tragedy, Laughing Hyenas, Jesus lizard, Neurosis and Born Against.  The band's one sheet succinctly captures the feel of the album in a way only the composers' could capture. “When you decide it's finally time to strip naked, scarf a fistful of peyote buttons, and drive an '82 Cadillac Cutlass deep into the desert in the middle of a lightning storm, BOTHERS second LP should probably be blaring on your tape deck while you daydream about communing with the coyotes or some shit. Two tracks in, you can almost smell the ozone as the horizon explodes. Inherently primal, their second offering is nothing short of bespoke savagery - deeper, uglier, and stranger than their first outing. The concept of Cult and Culture began as a short segment created by Justin Pearson, an internationally known musician, record label owner (Three One G Records), author, and actor. He is best known as bassist/vocalist for bands such as Dead Cross, The Locust, and Retox. Justin has come to know and work with a broad spectrum of captivating personalities and brilliant minds, many of which are key figures in the realm of popular culture and cult followings alike. John Waters was one of the first people interviewed for the project- an icon of both cult and culture. Other guests include a broad scope of musicians, producers, authors, and anyone passionate about what they do. In its infancy, segments were shorter, 10-20 minutes, and would be recorded while on tour. Since then, Pearson has collaborated with producer and musician Luke Henshaw (Planet B, Sonido de la Frontera) to build the idea into a proper podcast, now recorded at Penguin Studios in San Diego. The focus is not intended to be solely on people in any one realm, and because guests are friends and family, the conversations are frank, informal, well-informed and genuine. Cult and Culture episode 22 looks into the prolific career of San Diego's Mario Rubalcaba, best known as drummer of bands such as Earthless, Hot Snakes, Rocket from the Crypt, Clikatat Ikatowi, Off!, 411 and more, as well as guitarist in Chicano-Christ-- all of which is in addition to his time as a professional skateboarder. Mario gives insight as to how he found his way into various bands starting from a very young age. The trio make observations and parallels between his skateboarding style and his drumming. Those who may know Mario from only a few of his bands will find it fascinating to learn about the scope of his work, how unique and varied it is, and just how much influential music he has been a part of.

Recorded January 21, 2022 It's a lecture capture spectacular! The AV SuperFriends are joined by two guests, Michael Quinones and Raul Burriel, and with our powers combined… we are still unable to identify the perfect lecture capture system. Heck, we can't even really define lecture capture. But that doesn't stop us from walking through the earliest days of ITV systems, camcorders, VHS & DVD recording, and even famously abandoned systems like iTunes University (remember that?). We also review hardware encoders, capture software, local recordings, cloud delivery, and LMS integration. And, at the end, we all just use Zoom because that's what instructors know. Finally, Jamie shares a clever method for bootstrapping light video production switchers into his classroom systems. Despite everyone else's reservations, it is something worth considering. They say you should never meet your heroes. Well, you probably shouldn't be having them on your shitty podcast, either. Here's how to fuck up an interview with one of your favorite musicians (in this case, Mr. Rick Froberg — the great singer and guitarist for the thoroughly excellent rock combos Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes and Obits). 1. Ignore said musician's warnings that he doesn't have good luck with Zoom and set up an interview via Zoom. 2. As the pretext for some sort of half-assed “surprise”, keep your equally enamored co-host in the dark about said musician's appearance on your shitty podcast — thereby robbing your co-host (who's supposed to be your fucking friend, by the way!) of his chance to prepare thoughtful questions to ask one of HIS favorite musicians, too. 3. Proceed to ask this favorite musician of yours a bunch of dumb fucking questions. But one seriously botched (and lo-fi) interview isn't all this episode has to offer: There's some talk about a shitty Rush bootleg, an idiotic discussion between Gabe and Scott (and—unfortunately for Rick—Rick, as well) about which is the better record: “Yank Crime” or Drive Like Jehu's self-titled debut (there is no correct answer, by the way), and Ben reads a complete list of emo bands. Plus there's ice cream. Nine months ago Youtube commenter Eric Gabbard wrote the following about the seminal San Diego band Drive Like Jehu: I've listened to a “shit ton” of music in my life...obsessively at times...and I'm about to turn 46. This band was amazing. I keep coming back to it. I was a teenager at the time and listened to this, along with the Melvins, Fugazi, and another big one was Faith No More's Angel Dust. Great times driving around at night listening to this disc without a care in the world... So goddamn good Musician and artist Rick Froberg fronted Drive Like Jehu and many noted bands that have inspired the same type of devotion and admiration in music fans like Eric. These bands include Pitchfork, Hot Snakes, and The Obits. Rick also has a devoted following as an artist. To date, Rick has created album covers and posters for all his bands—often under the moniker "Rick Fork". He has worked at Funny Garbage (Gary Panter's interactive design company), contributed illustrations to the New York Times, created a line of T-shirts for Altamont Apparel, and shown his art at galleries across the country.
