This week Kerry, Andrew and Chris sit down with a couple of single malts, one American, one Scotch. They start with Tom Brady retiring and try to get in the head space of the G.O.A.T quarterback. Then they chase the rabbit through the sports world, past the Washington Commanders, into politics, race and upbringing. Grab a drink and hang out with the guys as they go…all over the place! Intro music: "Afterlife" by Switchfoot from the album "Vice Verses" copyright 2011 Atlantic Recording Corporation for the United States and WEA International Inc. for outside the United States. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theupsetpicks/support

Episode 121 (03/03/21): As humans, we struggle with change... and often, we spend our days trying to relive our yesterdays or fantasizing over what changes tomorrow may bring. When we find ourselves stuck between the days gone by, and what lies over the horizon of our tomorrows, how can we be present and embrace everything that today brings..? Heavy heart, we can’t sing a new song if we are holding onto old notes… May we be present, here, now knowing that our God is present, here, now. Music referenced in this episode: Switchfoot, “Souvenirs” (From the album: Vice Verses)

It's May! That means it's time to put the top down, turn up the radio, and break out the Sherpa Shorts! For the past two years during the month of May, we provided a blast of llama love with a burst of episodes we called the Sherpa Shorts. This year we are choosing some incredible song lyrics and then riffing about how they relate to youth ministry. Great music, sage thoughts, and a playlist for your summer road trip – that sounds like podcast perfection! Enjoy this year's version of SHERPA SHORTS! On this week's episode of The Average AF Podcast, we get through a lot of great topics that will help expand your perspectives. These topics include the importance of authenticity, the differences between the current generations, and lessons and moments that have made major impacts on our lives. We had a ton of fun recording this one, but noticed during the editing process that our studio may or may not be haunted. If you are the first person to send us the time stamp of the spirit/demon in the background, we'll do something special for ya. This week's Not So Average Song of the Week is brought to us by the extremely talented Matt Jones. The song is titled "Vice Verses," and can be found on every major streaming platform. Also, make sure to check him out at La Luna in Mansfield on February 16th for an awesome live show! Please make sure to like/follow/subscribe to Matt and the podcast on all of your preferred platforms! Thanks everyone! What about heaven, hell and is God really that angry? In Matthew 25, Jesus tells a series of stories in response to a question posed by the disciples. Their question was essentially, "Hey Jesus... when is the 'end' coming?" I'm not sure they meant what we mean today by that question but regardless, Jesus answers with a bunch of stories. He describes bridesmaids waiting with lamps, servants being given money and sheep and goats being separated by the King. If they were looking for a straight, simple, easy answer well...they didn't get it. Instead they got a series of short image rich stories each highlighting different aspects of Jesus' answer. The piece we'll be exploring today is the section about God separating the sheep and goats (aka people) and then sending some to what we might call heaven and others to hell (Jesus uses neither of those terms). The problem for many with these words is this: How can a good loving God knowingly send people to eternal suffering? Is that God? Is that our God? Images of God gleefully smiting sinners is an image that has caused many problems and much pain throughout history and yet, we have scriptures like these which seem to say, "Yeah, it isn't pretty, but that is what God is going to do." So what do we do with this? Is God really this angry king eager to dish out divine torment or could there be more to this story than meets the eye? We're so glad you're here today to help us wrestle with this last scripture in our Vice Verses series. We hope your time here draws you closer to God and closer to others for the glory of God and the sake of the world.
This week we’ll be jumping out of our Vice Verses series (don’t worry – it’s coming back next week!) to kick off a summer capital campaign geared to updating and renovating some areas of the church. As a community sent to help anyone and everyone become a follower of Jesus, we believe that the physical space here at University Carillon is part of our witness to the world. Every week, countless people come on our property for Upward, Preschool and Scouts just to name a few and we want to love them toward Jesus not just in word and deed, but through the testimony of the space itself. We may not think about how physical space communicates to people, but it does, and we are committed to being the best stewards we can be of what we have for the glory of God and the sake of the world. Thanks for joining us and may what you hear today become good news in you and through you to the world around you.
This month's panel includes JFH staffers Michael Weaver, Josh Balogh, Michael Knipp, and Chase Tremaine, who come together to answer the question: Should we consider Switchfoot one of Christian music's all-time greatest acts? Each panelist shares his thoughts on the band's discography and how those views have changed over time -- which includes some big surprises for some of them. Switchfoot's album Vice Verses also gets special attention in the segment, Is It 5 Stars? This episode is sponsored by Brady Novotny, whose new album Passions Collide releases on February 14. 9 times out of 10, am I right? Anyways, here is Episode #9 of American Brews and Tunes. This week, our heroes brave the weather in a true American Fashion. Jesse tackles the Oskar Blues Ten-Fidy Barrel Aged stout while listening to Supporting Caste by Propagandi. Meanwhile, Stephen tastes the Stone Mega Wheat IPA after listening to Vice Verses by Switchfoot. Plus, there is talk of the Minnesota Nice accent....sounds like a recipe for success yet again. Cheers!
