The World Cup starts on Thursday, beginning what will be the largest iteration of a hugely popular global event. This time, there are 104 matches with 48 countries competing across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. And the Canadian team will be making its third ever appearance at the World Cup, competing in Group B and playing its initial games in Toronto and Vancouver. But can this team advance to the knockout rounds? Especially since Canada has never won a World Cup game before? Neil Davidson is a sportswriter at The Globe who will be covering his seventh World Cup this tournament. He explains Canada's chances, lays out which young players may become international superstars and how a dog named Pickles plays a key role in World Cup history. Questions? Comments? Ideas? In this episode of Mining the Media, we examine the fallout from President Trump's State of the Union address — and the behavior that followed. Was it principled dissent, or a departure from political decorum? G.K. introduces a potential Democratic "dark horse" in San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, and we discuss what his rise could signal about the future direction of the party — and whether moderation still has a path forward. But while Washington performs, the world grows more unstable. With tensions rising in Iran and the next few days potentially pivotal, we close by urging prayer for peace in a dangerous world. Politics at home. Peril abroad. The stakes are higher than the spectacle. Massive tournament this week in Los Angeles, with Riviera on, and today we preview the tournament. This event has a cut, and the 10-shot rule is in play which is a good idea, but can go pear-shaped and we discuss when it did.Nick has played Riviera half a dozen times and he talks through how the course plays, what he enjoyed about it, and one hole he particularly loves. Mark wants to know if Nick would use the same clubs, in hindsight, as he typically did when he played there. He wouldn't as it turns out, and explains why. There is a specific kind of golfer, according to Nick, who Riviera suits beautifully and that starts to shape a Betr Multi that we're building for wolpackers. There are three players who stand out for different reasons, and our multi is built around them. Interestingly, we expected the multi might be about 8 bucks....it is well over double that! So whilst there is no guarantee of course, this Talk Birdie To Me multi feels like it might be worth considering.Nick also notes the back tees on one of the holes have been moved, which he feels suit the three players we've gone with. And outside of those three, Nick and Mark give their dark horses. Marks are perhaps predictable, a leopard never changes its spots, Nick has gone for a huge outsider and gives his reasons. If you have a Betr account, jump on board the Talk Birdie To Me multi, just head to Betr on the website or the app, and look at Betr specials, you'll find us there. If you don't have an account, it takes only a couple of minutes to set up. Below, you must pick one player from each section of the draw, and hope that they go as far as possible - as well as nominating a men's captain and a women's captain. (To help you, the players are presented as they are in the draw, so you know who plays who!) SCORING Players are split into four categories: Top Seed (a top 8 seed), Minor Seeds (9-32 seeds), Unseeded (self-explanatory) and Bolter (a wildcard or a qualifier). Unlike previous years, you do not HAVE to pick any qualifier or wildcards - but they will score points more quickly if you do pick a successful one. Top Seed - 10 points per win Minor Seed - 15 points per win Unseeded - 20 points per win Bolter - 30 points per win The overall tournament winner also receives a bonus of 20 points. CAPTAINS You must select a captain in the men's and the women's draw. Captains will score double points. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
