Hello and welcome to another episode, well actually a re-release of my conversation with Chris Smith which was originally released on March 12, 2024. Chris and I are re-releasing this episode as Chris just published a new book entitled The Virtue of Dialogue as part of the Cultivating Communities series. This series is part of a project by Englewood Church in Indiana in partnership with Missio Alliance and the Ekklesia Project. The hope of this series is to offer congregations, churches, or any community for that matter field guides to aid in their transformation away from the societal forces of polarization and division and into the way and personhood of Jesus. One of the central practices for communities is being conversation with one another. This book outlines how Englewood Church has sought to practice conversation for decades. At its core, this conversational practice is a practice of hospitality—of welcoming one another, being seen and heard. Conversation at its core is a creation of a free space to allow the other to become the person they were meant to be. Week after week, month after month, year after year.  Chris and my conversation touch on these themes and so we both thought it was a good time to revisit this conversation. If this piques your interest, please buy The Virtue of Dialogue, available now on Amazon and through Englewood's website which is in the show notes.Buy The Virtue of Dialogue: Englewood website or AmazonIn this episode I have a rich conversation with Chris Smith. We cover a range of topics, starting with his own personal journey of food over the past ten years. But we spend the majority of our time using a couple of Chris's books, namely Slow Church and How the Body of Christ Talks, to dialogue about the importance of conversation for the health of ourselves and our community. Through recovering of conversation, we begin to see how God wants to collaborate with us in his work of redemption.C. Christopher Smith is the founding editor of The Englewood Review of Books. He and his wife Jeni have three adult children and are members of Englewood Christian Church on the urban Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Chris is the co-author of the award-winning book Slow Church, and author of several other books including most recently, How the Body of Christ Talks: Recovering the Practice of Conversation in the Church. Most of his latest writings end up on The Englewood Review's Substack, TheConversationalLife.substack.comThis episode of the Biggest Table is brought to you in part by Wild Goose Coffee. How full is your life?  Our calendars are full.  But are our hearts full?  Chuck Swindoll said, “The more busy we are, the more empty we become.”  God wills that we live full lives.  Full of God, in Christ, we are joyful, prayerful, thankful people.  But how do we give thanks in all circumstances?  Our trust in God's providence makes us thankful, even when our external circumstances seem to defy our gratitude.  I am not always grateful for the things which happen in life, but I am always thankful that we are in Christ, and so we are in God's hands. Message based on 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18Quotes:Rowan Williams: For Christians, to share in the Eucharist, the Holy Communion, means to live as people who know that they are always guests – that they have been welcomed and that they are wanted. It is, perhaps, the most simple thing that we can say about Holy Communion, yet it is still supremely worth saying. In Holy Communion, Jesus Christ tells us that he wants our company.Unknown: Mr. Spurgeon if Jesus saves me he will never hear the end of it.Carolyn Arends about Rich Mullins: More than once, a fan asked Rich how to discern the will of God. Rich would listen and then offer an unexpected perspective. He'd say, “I don't think finding God's plan for you has to be complicated. God's will is that you love him with all your heart and soul and mind, and also that you love your neighbor as yourself. Get busy with that, and then, if God wants you to do something unusual, he'll take care of it. Say, for example, he wants you to go to Egypt.” Rich would pause for a moment before flashing his trademark grin. “If that's the case, he'll provide 11 jealous brothers, and they'll sell you into slavery.”Cicero: Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others. G. K. Chesterton: The worst moment for an atheist is when he is really thankful and has no one to thank.Christopher Smith and John Pattison write in Slow Church: If the essence of God is to give, the essence of humanity is thankfulness.Shakespeare in King Lear: How sharper than a serpent's tooth is a thankless child.C. S. Lewis: We ought to give thanks for all fortune: if it is good, because it is good, if bad, because it works in us patience, humility and the contempt of this world and the hope of our eternal country.Duane Brooks: One of the darkest days in our lives, I was overcome by gratitude.Duane Brooks: Worship is the context for all of life.  Everyday must become itself our prayer.  There is a depth of life in Christ that comprehends and transcends circumstances.Lewis Smedes: I have never met a grateful person who was an unhappy person. And for that matter, I have never met a grateful person who was a bad person. . . . All we need to be grateful is the insight to recognize a real gift when we get one. A gift is not just something we get for nothing.Elie Wiesel: Right after the war, I went around telling people, “Thank you just for living, for being human.” And to this day, the words that come most frequently from my lips are, “Thank you.” When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude. For me, every hour is grace. And I feel gratitude in my heart each time I can meet someone and look at his or her smile. Every day is a gift; every hour is a grace; every moment is a sacred trust from God to us. Let us not waste a moment in ingratitude.  Sylvia Gunter, Taken from  Strength To Equal Your Days: A Year of Prayers and Blessings: Thanksgiving is about recognizing that every good gift in our lives, every breath we take, every moment of joy, and every lesson learned in hardTo discover more messages of hope go to tallowood.org/sermons/.Follow us on Instagram, X, and YouTube @tallowoodbc.Follow us on FaceBook @tallowoodbaptist

I kick off the first of 10 listener requests by fulfilling the most important one: my wife's.She chose TRIANGLE, Christopher Smith's 2009 horror film about a mother (Melissa George) whose sailing trip with friends ends with a storm and shipwreck.Their salvation comes in the form of a luxury yacht, but once aboard, the group discovers the yacht's only occupant: a masked axe-wielding killer.Sounds like FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII if it kept honest with its premise, right? Partially. What makes TRIANGLE special is what happens after this point. The question of "How do they get back home?" quickly devolves into a labyrinth of dead ends, the reveal of which stirs in a satisfying swirl of sci-fi.This movie's about humanity's inability to stop sabotaging ourselves, blissfully unaware of how the chain of bad choices we make slowly wrap around our own necks until it's time to hang. It's a dated watch (holy shit, the CGI seagulls) but nonetheless, a worthwhile one.--- Please rate & review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you listen to the show! For five years, Christopher Smith, a man with intellectual disabilities, was forced to work 100 hours per week at a South Carolina restaurant without pay. Smith faced verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his employer. Around the world, persons with disabilities like Smith face many modern forms of enslavement, from forced labor and begging to sexual exploitation and imprisonment by caregivers. While some of these crimes are prosecuted through national court systems, international criminal law can also play an important role in promoting accountability for grave crimes, including the crime of the slave trade. The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is formulating a new Slave Crimes Policy, which he hopes will be “survivor-centred, trauma-informed and gender-competent.”How can international law, and the new policy, best account for the unique needs and challenges persons with disabilities face regarding slavery crimes? Joining the show to unpack how slavery crimes impact persons with disabilities and what the international community can do in response are Janet Lord and Michael Ashley Stein. Janet is the Executive Director of the University of Baltimore School of Law's Center for International and Comparative Law and a senior research fellow at the Harvard Law School Project on Disability. Michael is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Harvard Law School Project on Disability, and a Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School. Show Notes:  Janet E. What is going on when a graphic novel has a twelfth-century samurai pick up a telephone to make a call, or a play has an ancient aristocrat teaching in a present-day schoolroom? Rather than regarding such anachronisms as errors, Samurai with Telephones: Anachronism in Japanese Literature (U Michigan Press, 2024) develops a theory of how texts can use different types of anachronisms to challenge or rewrite history, play with history, or open history up to new possibilities. By applying this theoretical framework of anachronism to several Japanese literary and cultural works, author Christopher Smith demonstrates how different texts can use anachronism to open up history for a wide variety of different textual projects. From the modern period, this volume examines literature by Mori Ōgai and Ōe Kenzaburō, manga by Tezuka Osamu, art by Murakami Takashi, and a variety of other pop cultural works. Turning to the Early Modern period (Edo period, 1600–1868), which produced a literature rich with playful anachronism, he also examines several Kabuki and Bunraku plays, kibyōshi comic books, and gōkan illustrated novels. In analyzing these works, he draws a distinction between anachronisms that attempt to hide their work on history and convincingly rewrite it and those conspicuous anachronisms that highlight and disrupt the construction of historical narratives.
