Things are a little different this week in the woods…Get ready for a bonus episode with guest host Mara, who took charge of research and story telling. This week, Jess and Brice get all the sordid and dirty details of the life and crimes one of the most despicable mothers in recent history. Elizabeth Diane Downs. On May 19, 1983, Diane and her 3 young children were returning home when she claims a "shaggy man" stopped her car on an isolated back road. Allegedly, when she refused to give the keys and car over to the man, Downs and her children were shot. Her middle daughter, only 7 years old at the time, would not survive the incident. The other two siblings would have injuries that would change the course of their lives forever.Police found nothing to suggest anyone other than Diane had done these horrible things. Even going so far as to shoot her own arm to keep up with her story. While Diane maintained her innocence, and still does, a jury saw right through her act and found her guilty of the crimes. She was convicted of charges of Murder, Attempted Murder and Assault in 1984. Diane Simovich established BW NICE (Business Women Networking Involving Charity & Education) in 2009, with initial chapters in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  Through its growing number of chapters, BW NICE gathers together business women and female professionals who seek to support each other, and to give back---in this case, to raise money for, and awareness of, domestic violence and sexual assault.    In this episode, Diane speaks candidly about the abuse she personally experienced, first as a child, and then in an abusive marriage. She shares how what she learned from her own experience helped shape the work of BW NICE, and provided the inspiration for her to design an organization to address the needs of other women who have also suffered at the hands of an abuser.   HARNESSING THE STRENGTH OF WOMEN   It was during her stint as a successful health insurance executive that she first tapped into the strength of women.  Diane saw a need for a way to business network that was different from the way male executives built their connections.  The women she knew just weren’t thriving in the male-dominated charity golf circuit.  “There was a hunger among women,” she says, “to give back and to develop relationships with other women in business.”  “The golf cart just wasn’t the right setting.”    Diane started out with a women’s business initiative at her Fortune 100 employer.  Today, women’s initiatives are all the rage.  But, when Diane kicked off her initiative, she was ahead of the curve. Her events drew an enthusiastic response.  “I knew I had struck a chord with women,” said Diane. You’ll want to hear more about what she learned from this networking strategy.    NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF RE-INVENTION   Many women have found the need or desire to reinvent themselves.  They all have their personal reasons. In this episode Diane describes the confluence of events that caused her to re-assess her life and journey:  her father’s passing, her brother’s passing, divorce from an abusive marriage, and the need to care for her adopted son.    She describes her work as a consultant after she resigned from her high-powered corporate position.  “I needed and wanted to spend time with my then-newly-adopted son, Nick,” she says.  Listen as she describes her own strong network of family and friends, and why she believes you must have love and support from such a network in your life.    It was her strong network that gave her the support and encouragement to share her story with others and turn it into her mission.  BW NICE exists because of this support.    HOW TO GROW A CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION   BW NICE grew out of that first women’s initiative and her own journey.  “Women are deeply motivated to give back, and they love to educate and be educated,” she says.  Listen in to how the stars aligned behind BW NICE.   BW NICE continues to add new chapters, and Diane explains the process. “Women attend a meeting, and they tell a friend,” she says.  “And then they tell a friend, and on it goes.”    But she can’t do it alone.  As is the case with many an entrepreneur, she says she frequently serves as “chief cook and bottle washer.”  She shares her particular experience and how and when she utilizes independent contractors to help lighten the load.  Diane also shares the practical business aspects of running a charitable organization.  While Diane might make it look easy, things are never as easy as they might appear.      ABOUT DIANE:   Diane Simovich is the founder and CEO of BW NICE – Business Women Networking Involving Charity and Education.    Diane established BW NICE in 2009, with chapters throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  It’s patterned off a successful model she co-founded, launched and nurtured in California.  Diane and her team continue to build new chapters, with BW NICE on its way to becoming a national organization.     Diane is a native of New Jersey, had a successful career in the health insurance industry in California and moved back to the east coast in 2006.    As she says, she reinvented her life at age 50. She lives with her adopted son, Nicholas.   To learn about Diane and BW NICE:   WWW.BWNICE.org

I am Danny van Leeuwen, a two-legged, old, cisgender, white man with privilege, living in a food oasis, who can afford many hats and knows a little about a lot of healthcare and a lot about very little. The Show Introducing Diane Shader Smith My Opa, my father’s father, survived the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. He also survived my dad’s death. He told me that he suffered more from losing a son than the concentration camp. I’m unhappy to say that I share the experience of losing a child with my Opa and Diane Shader Smith. Diane’s daughter, Mallory, kept extensive journals about her life with Cystic Fibrosis. Diane continued the bittersweet journey of shaping those journals into the book, Salt in my Soul, an Unfinished Life after Mallory died. I’m beginning and ending the conversations in this Young Adults with Complex Conditions series with solo parents - speaking with a parent and not their children - the first with Jill Woodworth and the last with Diane. I sought to provide a platform to share the stories of the young adults with perspective provided by parents, clinicians, and teachers. To hear Mallory’s story, please read the book. While Diane is engaging and well spoken,

EER096: Living, Camping & Hiking in Eastern Europe with Kids Living in Serbia. Camping in Kosovo. Hiking in Eastern Europe with kids. Hitchhiking, too. Thank you! :::   Hiking in Eastern Europe with Kids Diane moved to Serbia when she was 22 years old. An avid hiker, camper and outdoors lover since childhood, she found many beautiful places to go hiking in Eastern Europe. Her daughter Isabella is now six years old and goes camping with her mom whenever they have the chance.  They have been hiking and slept under stars in countries like Kosovo, Albania, Romania and other places that are great for camping in Eastern Europe. Hiking in Eastern Europe with kids isn't as common as it is in some parts of the world. And camping in Eastern Europe, she explains, often involves staying in building you reserve in advance. The area's natural beauty, however, is spectacular, and the Slovenian mountain trails are beautiful.    The Different Styles of Camping in Eastern Europe Diane explains some of the different forms of camping and hiking in Eastern europe that she comes across. Most locals join hiking and camping clubs. Others do "car camping," where you pitch a tent right next to where you park. When Diane and Isabella go camping in Eastern Europe, they prefer to hike in. By hiking in, they get away from the noise of cars and people and the cit and truly enjoy the natural world. This kind of backpacking and "wild camping" is what they enjoy best. There are other classiifcations of hiking and camping in Europe that she's come across. Some people classify their style as through hikers and ultralight campers. This is a style of camping in which weight and mobility are key. While Diane appreciates the passion of thethrough hikers and ultralight campers, the best camping in Eastern Europe she's found is at a slower, more relaxed pace.  The Joy of Camping in Eastern Europe with Kids Diane details a typical camping trip and talks about some of the best camping in Eastern Europe she's found so far. Does she come across many others camping and hiking in Eastern Europe with kids? Not often, she says, but one particular camping trip inspired her to start her family camping blog.  As she describes in the interview, she went hiking with friends and their children. While apprehensive at first, she watched her friend open up and enjoy the experience. The worry for her child's safety in the woods soon turned to joy. They had a great time. After that, Diane knew she needed to write about it more. What You Need for Hiking & Camping with Kids A lot of people think you need expensive and specialized gear to go hiking in Eastern Europe or anywhere else. You don't. Diane talks about the hiking boots, clothes and other camping gear they use, but emphasizes that it doesn't have to break the bank to enjoy camping in Eastern Europe.  There are a few pieces of equipment that are very important, however. If you're planning on hiking in remote areas, a good water filter is crucial, she says. Good boots, too. A well-prepared first aid kit is also recommended, and Diane has a great piece on the kit she pput together. Look for that in the show notes.  Hitchhiking with Kids Occasionally Diane and Isabella do some hitchhiking in Eastern Europe, as well. In the West today, hitchhiking is not even considered by many travelers, but you can still find hitchiking in Euope. Diane talks about hitchhiking in Eastern Europe with Isabella and how it has saved them long walks to the entrance to some of the best Slovenia mountain trails and other places to hike in Eastern Europe.  IN THIS EPISODE 02:02 Intro & origins 05:21 What's great about living & traveling in Eastern Europe 08:16 The different definitions of camping 10:24 How Dianne & Isabella camp in Eastern Europe 14:59 Outdoor & camping culture in Eastern Europe 20:15 Water filters: Her most important piece of camping gear 23:36 Boots & when to buy them 28:25 Don't need fancy gear 31:55 Backpacking & camping in Eastern Europe with young kids 37:55 Education & self-directed learning while camping with kids 43:58 Hitchhiking with kids 48:20 Tips for hitchhiking 54:34 Working in Serbis and the cost of traveling in Eastern Europe ABOUT Names: Dianne Vukovic & her daughter Isabella (now 6) Hold passports from: USA & Serbia  Type of travel: Lives in Serbia — camping, hitchhiking, & hiking in Eastern Europe A few places they've been: Kosovo, Albania, Romania and elsewhere in Eastern Europe.
