The crime, the largest mass kidnapping in United States history, shocked the nation in 1976. Should the 3 kidnappers have served longer? How was the trauma of the 26 young victims taken into account, if at all? This episode hosts just a couple of kitties - Jess and her guest T Bone. We do have to warn you that the kitties were sipping cocktails for HOURS before they got to Chowchilla so words are slurred and there is some confusion. But we did manage to get most of the story out. If none of what we said made sense, here is what the doc was all about:CNN Films and Max covered what was truly one of the weirdest mass kidnappings in history—the Chowchilla school bus abduction. This documentary featured exclusive interviews from survivors which is what really made it amazing! Here's what happened: On July 15, 1976, three masked men hijacked a school bus in Chowchilla, California. They kidnapped the driver and 26 kids, stuffed them into soundproof vans, and took them to a remote quarry, where they were buried alive in an underground chamber. With barely any food or water, air running out, and the roof caving in, one brave child led a daring escape. When the kidnappers were caught, their identities shocked everyone even more. This chilling event left deep scars on the survivors, who spent decades trying to rebuild their lives. The doc was directed by Paul Solet. The kitties gave Chowchilla 3 1/2 out of 4 paws

Andrew will be one of the speakers at the 4th Annual Regenerative Tree Nut Field Day Jan 21-22, 2025. You can find out more about the event here: https://burroughsfamilyfarms.com/pages/regenerative-almond-field-day Andrew is a forward-thinking farmer and entrepreneur based in Chowchilla, California, dedicated to advancing regenerative agriculture practices. After a career in music in Los Angeles, Andrew returned to his hometown in 2012, where he began his journey in farming by working with his father-in-law. What started as a curiosity about the overuse of chemicals and the lack of biodiversity in traditional farming quickly evolved into a passion for building resilient soil systems. In 2020, Andrew founded EcoThrive Farm Management, a business focused on promoting soil health and balancing agricultural ecosystems. Through the adoption of practices like cover cropping, reduced chemical inputs, and composting, Andrew has demonstrated that sustainable farming not only benefits the environment but also significantly reduces costs and enhances long-term profitability. Andrew's innovative approach has led to remarkable successes, such as saving over $600 per acre in farming costs, reducing water usage by up to 25%, and fostering thriving ecosystems that include improved biodiversity and nutrient cycling. His commitment to working with nature instead of against it has earned him recognition as a leader in sustainable farming. Beyond farming, Andrew is passionate about sharing his journey and encouraging others to rethink conventional practices. He believes in the power of collaboration and learning from failure to push the boundaries of what's possible in regenerative agriculture. In Andrew's own words: “We went from considering ourselves almond or pistachio farmers to ecosystem farmers. We're soil farmers. This is what our focus is.” Got questions you want answered? Send them our way and we'll do our best to research and find answers. Know someone you think would be great on the AgEmerge stage or podcast? Penitencia en Estados Unidos. Chowchilla, California. Learn more about your ad choices. In July 2024, a woman died from a heat-related illness while incarcerated at the Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla, California. According to California Coalition for Women Prisoners (CCWP), the woman's death was due to heat stroke and prison neglect. However, CDCR claims the cause was related to pre-existing health conditions. Elizabeth Nomura, state membership organizer for the CCWP told the Guardian, “I've had heatstroke before [while incarcerated] and I know what it feels like to be so dehydrated that you can't see. They are sitting in a room, toasting in what feels like an oven. They're all suffering.” Everyday Injustice talked to Amika Mota of Sister Warriors. Mota told everyday injustice that while the Chowchilla has swamp coolers that are meant to lower temperatures and fans, they weren't working properly. As extreme heat increases with Climate Change, this figures to become an even larger problem. The Sister Warriors are a member-led organization of over 5,000 formerly and currently incarcerated and systems-impacted women and trans people of all genders, founded in 2017 at a convening of over 200 systems-impacted people in Oakland. “We improve conditions for women and trans people of all genders by fighting for – and winning – policies and systems change that center the needs and experiences of communities most impacted by systems of exploitation, criminalization, and incarceration throughout the state.” The answer that Mota offers isn't better cooling systems – though they are needed – it is fewer incarcerated people.

The California Department of Corrections is investigating after more than 100 women incarcerated in a Central Valley prison were allegedly pepper sprayed and tear gassed by staff for more than an hour. Inmates who've been in the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla for years say it was the most severe use of force they've seen. A 42-year-old Black woman, Adrienne Boulware, has died in the custody of the California Department of Corrections at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, CA. On July 4, prison guards exposed Boulware to extreme temperatures outdoors during a heatwave for 15 minutes, leaving her with just a small glass of water in the over 110 F heat. Boulware began to exhibit symptoms of heat exhaustion almost immediately after returning indoors. Two days later, she passed away while receiving medical care. Elizabeth "Leesa" Nomura of the California Coalition for Women's Prisoners joins Rattling the Bars to discuss Boulware's tragic death, and what it reveals about the dangers prisons place incarcerated people in as the climate crisis intensifies.Studio / Post-Production: Cameron GranadinoAudio Post-Production: Alina NehlichRead the transcript of this interview here. Today, we discuss the case of a woman who dropped dead at the Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla, apparently due to heatstroke. Last year, the Sacramento Bee reported that the prison's cooling systems had failed during a heat wave. According to prisoners, temperatures inside the facility had topped 80 degrees. Our guest Elizabeth “Leesa” Nomura was formerly incarcerated at Chowchilla. She is a longtime prisoner advocate and Membership Organizer for the California Coalition of Women's Prisoners. The organization is calling for a public health investigation into the death at CCWF. Comprehensive coverage of the day's news with a focus on war and peace; social, environmental and economic justice. President Joe Biden gave the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to the outgoing head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Biden spoke at an event celebrating NATO's 35th anniversary. The weekend before, critics of the alliance gathered for their own event, called “No to NATO, Yes to Peace.” A coalition of France's left and center-left parties won a majority of parliamentary seats, delivering a defeating blow to the far right, which was projected to win the weekend elections. A weeklong nationwide senior citizen climate justice protest came to San Francisco today, where several dozen activists rallied downtown to protest against Citibank and the impact of its investments on climate change. An inmate at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, California, died of what is believed to be heat stroke over the weekend. Business, labor, and community leaders met with local officials outside San Jose's Diridon train station today to urge the Biden administration to fund what they say is a much-needed San Jose BART extension. Welcome to week 5 of Mental Health Awareness Month! Today I'm discussing two seemingly unrelated topics: The 1976 Chowchilla kidnappings and the death by suicide of golfer Grayson Murray. In 1976, 26 elementary and middle school kids and their bus driver were kidnapped by 3 armed men, their faces covered with panty hose. They were driven around for 11 hours and eventually forced to climb into a 26' trailer buried underground. After all 27 were in, the kidnappers sealed the opening and buried the remaining portion of the trailer with dirt. They dug themselves out after 16 hours. Their lives were forever changed, and because childhood trauma wasn't understood, their mental health was forever damaged. This past week on Saturday, May 25th, pro-golfer Grayson Murray took his life after a fairly public battle with depression, anxiety, and alcoholism. In an interview last year (Link below), he said: I just thought I was a failure. I always looked at myself as a failure. I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent. It was a bad place, but like I said, you have to have courage. You have to have the willingness to keep going. Lo and behold, that's what I did, and I'm here, and I'm so blessed and I'm thankful. He was in the public eye, and felt like a failure. How are they related? They are related because they both help us to see both how far we have come in treatment, help, and stigma surrounding mental health AND how much more there is to be done. I hope you'll listen to today's episode. The reason it struck me so, in part, was because I WAS the age of those children during the Chowchilla kidnappings. In 1976 I was 12 years-old, the age where my panic attacks were debilitating, but panic attacks weren't really a thing. I wasn't understood. So, why did I not go down the path that some of the survivors did, including alcoholism and suicide? And, Grayson Murray was a Christian. I am a Christian. Why did he still battle, and why do I still battle anxiety? I think the bottom line is this: We have amazing treatments for heart disease. People still die. We have new treatments for cancer. People still die. With all the mental health treatments available now and to come, people will still struggle and people will still die. It breaks my hearth. I was thinking deeper about that question, why didn't I go down a worse path? For me, it was and is so many things: -My relationship with Jesus -My family & friends -Allowing myself to fail and to talk about it. Saying out loud, Oh gosh I messed that one up and realizing I am not perfect! -Continuing to learn and grown -Counseling -Medication for seasons in my life As we end Mental Health Awareness Month, I encourage you on 2 fronts: 1. NEVER LET ANYONE SHAME YOU INTO NOT GETTING HELP IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING! 2. Get trained in Mental Health First Aid. It truly changed how I view and interact with those who are struggling. I have 2 virtual classes coming up. Link with dates is in show notes which post by 7 AM CST 5/29/24. This week we watched and reviewed the CNN (now on MAX) documentary, Chowchilla. In the late 70's, in the farming town of Chowchilla, California, 26 children and their school bus driver were stopped in the middle of a rural road by three armed men. The men systematically kidnapped the driver and the children and sequestered them in a dark and virtually airless truck trailer and then buried them. While all of the victims survived, they have spent their lives dealing with a multitude of symptoms of trauma and we get to hear from them in this truly bizarre tale. Chowchilla was the largest ever kidnapping in United States History. It happened in a small town where no one would have expected it, during a summer day in 1976. What this is famous for is not just the kidnapping but on how it has impacted how people view victims, especially child victims, of childhood trauma and how they are treated. In this episode, Fallon summarizes the latest true crime hit on MAX, Chowchilla, and also tells us info not given in the doc!✨If you'd like access to over 125 episodes that aren't on the regular feed, and you'd like them all ad free, join our Patreon for as little as $5 a month! We have a guest co-host today and it's one of Susie's infamous "lezes"! Kelly fills in for Sarah as she heals from her surgery. We discuss the documentary Chowchilla, which is about 26 children who were abducted from a school bus and how their experience changed the way we see childhood trauma and raises questions about justice. We debate whether a man who opened a plane's emergency door and walked on the wing is a lunatic, criminal, or hero. We hear about a new spa made especially for the diaper-wearing community, discuss whether this group would fall into the "kink" category, and discuss the type of person who would do this. Susie talks about the Greatest Night in Pop, which chronicles the making of We Are the World, and how she thinks one legendary singer got ripped off because she wasn't assigned a solo. We hear who stole a pair of original ruby slippers, Susie claims old people should do hard drugs, and we learn how Kelly got a piece of the Titanic (not the doomed boat, but the film set). But the real quote of the episode involves an intimate moment Kelly had with Rosie O'Donnell.Join our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/braincandypodSusie's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/susie_meisterSarah's Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Go to https://paireyewear.com and use code BRAINCANDY for 15% off your first pair. Episode 303: The Chowchilla school bus hijacking and kidnapping, a notorious case that occurred in 1976, involved the abduction of a school bus carrying 26 children, nineteen girls and seven boys, ages 5 to 14, and their driver, Frank Edward ‘Ed' Ray, who was 55. It was orchestrated by three young men from affluent families — brothers Richard Schoenfeld, 22, James Schoenfeld, 24, and their friend Frederick Newhall Woods IV, also twenty-four. The crime was motivated by a desire for ransom money and as a cure for their boredom. The kidnappers hid the bus and took its occupants to a buried truck trailer in a quarry in Livermore, California, intending to demand $5 million for their release. Remarkably, led by Ed Ray and Michael Marshall, 14, one of the older children, the victims managed to escape without any ransom being paid. Even though they all made it out alive, the victims suffered psychological scars that changed their lives and persist to the present day. This was the largest kidnapping in U.S. history, and it has a Canadian connection. After their hostages escaped, all three kidnappers went into hiding but were eventually apprehended and convicted, although one of the suspects, the mastermind behind the kidnapping, Frederick Woods, fled to Vancouver, British Columbia, before being arrested by the RCMP. But the kidnappings for ransom did not go as the kidnappers had planned. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the Chowchilla kidnappings. The phone lines were so jammed with calls from worried parents that the kidnappers couldn't phone in their demands. In the meantime, the kids and the bus driver attempted a daring escape. 24-year-old Frederick Woods and brothers James and Rick Schoenfeld were quickly identified as the masterminds behind the kidnappings for ransom.
