Diane was serving in Baptist collegiate ministry when she accompanied four students on a missions trip to Haiti, an experience that changed her life. There, they helped minister to 65 orphaned children whose parents were killed by a hurricane. When Diane returned to the US, she realized there were countless opportunities to serve children in her immediate area and answered God's call to serve in foster care. Listen in as Diane shares her personal journey as well as practical ways individuals and churches can support foster care ministries, encourage those who provide care, and be a part of helping the more than 400,000 children in foster care in the US.
DISCLAIMER: Just a quick message before the episode begins. Spencer and I have been trying a lot of different things in regards to making VIA VHS a multimedia podcast while recording with each other from 2500 miles away. Unfortunately some of those things we’ve tried didnt work very well. For the double feature episodes of Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, I made the difficult decision to use the Skype audio for the podcast release. Unfortunately there were some unforeseen audio issues that went unnoticed until I listened fully to both recordings and it was impossible to use the recorded audio. The Skype audio isn’t ideal, but I feel like it’s at least listenable and I’d rather release the episodes as opposed to trashing it all together. You can also watch the episodes on YouTube if you prefer. So with that out of the way, on with the show. Jewel of the Nile After the unexpected success of Romancing the Stone, the studio and producer Michael Douglas was eager to begin work on the films sequel Jewel of the Nile. Sadly, screenwriter Diane Thomas who penned the clever and endearing Romancing the Stone, passed away when her boyfriend crashed her new Porsche, a Porsche that was given to her by none other than Michael Douglas as thanks for her work on the first film. When Diane was tragically killed, she was working on a project with Steven Spielberg, as was Romancing the Stone’s director Robert Zemeckis, who after being fired from directing Cocoon, was given the green light to direct his next film Back to the Future. Even without the director and writer from Romancing the Stone, production on Jewel of the Nile went ahead anyways. Lead star Kathleen Turner wasn’t pleased with the script for Jewel of the Nile, she was obligated to star in the film nonetheless, but perhaps her reservations on Jewel of the Nile were correct. Jewel of the Nile was rushed into theaters just a year after the release of Romancing the Stone, its apparent. This cheap follow up isn’t as good as the original, but still finds some of the charm from its predecessor at times, albeit fleeting moments. Why is knowing your walk-away point so important in a negotiation? How does it influence the process? In this episode of the Sales Reinvented podcast, Diane Helbig shares her thoughts on knowing your floor—your bottom-line walk-away point—and why it’s such an important part of the negotiation process. Diane Helbig is an international business advisor, sales trainer, and growth accelerator. She is the author of Succeed Without Selling and the host of the Accelerate Your Business Growth podcast. Don’t miss her unique take on the negotiation process! Outline of This Episode [0:36] Diane’s definition of negotiation [0:57] The key to long-term and successful relationships [1:14] Change the mindset around the negotiation [1:58] Diane’s process begins with knowing your walk-away point [3:54] The attributes Diane believes are important in a salesperson [4:31] Tools, tactics, and strategies to prepare for the negotiation [5:11] Don’t make assumptions during any part of the process [6:52] How Diane’s firm walk-away point paid off big How Diane prepares for the negotiation process Diane’s negotiation process always includes calculating her walk-away point. It simply means that she writes out the point she is willing to walk away if an agreement can’t be made. She emphasizes that you must know this before you walk into the negotiation conversation. Secondly, you must let the other party speak. You need to ask questions to understand their walk-away point. If you know their floor and ceiling, you can identify where you’ll meet in the middle. Diane implores salespeople to listen without a preconceived idea or agenda other than to learn. It’s critically important. Be quiet, calm, and hear what they’re saying and create healthy dialogue. Don’t make assumptions about any part of the negotiation process. Don’t assume anything—the conclusion, where they’re coming from, and what the customer needs or wants. Diane points out that this is a recipe for disaster. Be prepared to adapt the conversation Another ‘don’t’ that Diane believes is important: Don’t respond to things you don’t hear. Salespeople have a bad habit of hearing what someone is saying but responding with a different or competing thought. They tend to come into the conversation with ONE thing they believe the customer needs to know or ONE solution they’re dead-set on offering. When a salesperson responds to what they wish was asked—it causes a massive disconnect. It’s all well and good to be prepared to convey your underlying value message. But If it isn’t brought up—there’s no point in mentioning it. When being blunt with your walk-away point helps you win big 15 years ago Diane had decided to leave the company she was working for. She created an agreement and a process that she wanted to approach her employer with. She created a strategy and she told the owner she wanted to change their relationship. She wanted to be paid a commission on each of her customer’s sales, not a salary. The owner said no to her request. So she asked him to sit down to have a conversation about it. As she listened to him, she realized his reasons for saying no weren’t in the best interest of the business, but about staying in control. She knew what her walk-away point was and they hit a point where she just said she’d give him her two-week notice—and he backed off. So they started to negotiate her commission. She wasn’t asking for commissions on sales with the highest paying clients or the other 180 she worked with—just the 20 clients she had a strong relationship with. They finally agreed on terms. When Diane went back to sign the paperwork and asked “What do you want to tell people about what I’m doing?”. He questioned why he would need to tell them anything. She pointed out that if a client called that she wasn’t working with anymore, someone would have to tell them something. She realized he hadn’t paid attention to that portion of her conversation or the addendum in the paperwork. She ended up getting ALL of her clients and got exactly what she wanted and more while he got exactly what he wanted. She learned that you must be quiet, calm, and confident in the moment. The success of this negotiation was because she knew the value of what she had to offer and was confident with her walk-away point. We don’t often hear the stories of women who served in Vietnam, especially those who deployed directly to combat zones. Diane Evans is one of those women who had the opportunity to serve as a nurse in combat in Vietnam in areas where humanity seemed only a ragged shred of existence. She joined the military in the late 1960’s with the intent to go to Vietnam. Like her brothers and other young men she knew in her rural Minnesota town, she felt a sense of duty and calling to serve her country in a time of war. She would fulfill that duty serving in Evacuation Hospitals on the front lines, one of which was located not far from the Cambodian border in the Central Highlands. She would do this at the young age of 21, from 1968-69, arguably the most brutal year of the Vietnam War. When Diane returned home, she found herself fighting a different war: the fight for recognition for the women who contributed so bravely to the war effort in Vietnam. After a nearly 10-year battle, her dream was realized in 1993 with the dedication of the statue commemorating Vietnam-era female veterans as part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Eddie from Sumner has written in to us for help with his girlfriend Diane who he says has been waking up in the middle of the night saying other guys’ names. He says she didn’t do it when they first got together so he’s concerned that she’s dreaming about other guys, and if she’s dreaming about them, well then, what else is happening with them? And he’s pretty sure she is dreaming about someone he doesn’t know because he doesn’t recognize the names, like other friends or TV characters. When Diane comes on, she says Eddie is being completely ridiculous; she is not cheating and can’t be judged on what she dreams. The P1’s agree that it’s weird that Diane says other dudes’ names while sleeping, but they don’t think that’s anything to act on. But as for this whole relationship? They may both be dreaming if they think it’s gonna work.

Diane Gottsman is a national etiquette expert. She is the owner of a company that specializes in corporate etiquette training. She is the author of Modern Etiquette for a Better Life. She has appeared on The Today Show, Headline News, CBS Sunday Morning, and in the New York Times. She is also poised, beautiful, smart, and so well-spoken. I was nervous about having an etiquette expert like Diane on the show today, but she put me at ease. Diane teaches that etiquette is about mind and soul, and that they are connected. She believes that etiquette is about putting other people at ease, and that's what she did with me. She also answered my questions with such grace and wisdom that I loved this episode. Diane shares insights about life we all need to keep in mind. This interview wasn’t what I had expected, but it is filled with actionable knowledge we can all use. You can find Diane here: Diane Gottsman Website Diane Gottsman on Instagram Diane Gottsman on Facebook dg@psotx.com Show Notes [02:45] Diane is in San Antonio today. [05:25] To Diane etiquette isn't stuffy, it's about life skills and making other people feel comfortable. Every person at every age can fine-tune their life skills. [05:59] When Diane was growing up she didn't know what she wanted to do, but she did know she wanted to work with people. [06:25] Diane has a master's degree in human behavior. She started fundraising for meals-on-wheels. She also worked with a children's charity and one of the children said when she grew up she wanted to be just like Diane. [07:33] She had an aha moment and realized that knowledge and training was all that was holding this little girl back. This inspired Diane to work and train people in all walks of life. [08:33] She merged her teaching and training into one. By nature Diane is an introvert. She is still shy, but she's a socialized introvert. [09:48] It's up to us to be relationship builders. Etiquette is just about being authentic and genuine. That is what Diane teaches. [10:37] We get to choose how we behave and how others treat us. We train people how to treat us. If someone is talking down to you, you don't have to waste a lot of time with them. [11:07] It's about feeling good about yourself and knowing that you are not competing with anyone else. [11:16] Money doesn't buy class it buys a great pair of shoes. It's about self confidence and making others around you feel comfortable. [11:36] If everyone likes you, there's something wrong with you. It means you're not speaking your truth. [11:45] Diane teaches etiquette which is about mind and soul, and they are connected. [13:02] There's a difference between assertive and aggressive. You lose your power when you scream or shout. [13:48] As we grow, we weed our friendship gardens. [14:40] A graceful exit isn't a shouting match. It's better to talk about something positive rather than negative. You can gracefully exit. You don't need to give excuses. There is power in truth, but use good judgement. [16:54] Diane owns the Protocol School of Texas which is a company that specializes in corporate etiquette training. [17:35] You are your brand. Always work on your brand. [19:44] It's up to us as parents to do the best that we can. Give your kids structure and boundaries. [20:54] Diane instilled values in her kids. The need to be respectful, make eye contact, exchange a handshake when appropriate, and be open and have grace. Give everyone the benefit of the doubt. [22:13] When eating at restaurants, at the end of the meal, Melissa asks her kids what were the color of the eyes of their waiter or waitress. [22:48] When you are introduced to someone stand up. [25:25] Balance is the key with social media. You can tell a great deal about a person from their posts. Social media can help you, but we all need face-to-face relationships. [27:20] Texting isn't a bad thing, but it may not be the best thing in some situations. Know the language of the person that you are relating to. [28:29] Everyone should have people around them who lift them up. [31:44] Cell phone etiquette? Put your phone away at a party or event. You can use your phone when getting a pedicure. Use your best judgement. The most important person is sitting across from you. [34:28] Thank you notes? They aren't outdated. Send the note. [36:29] Hold a red wine glass from the bowl and a white wine glass from the stem. A champagne flute is held from the stem. [36:56] Hostess gifts are still a thing. Take one when you are invited to a party or to stay at someone’s home. Send flowers in advance. Don't make the host or hostess stop and find a vase. Bring wine, tea towels, or olive oil. [38:21] You shouldn't be thinking about the exit at the entrance of a party. It's your job to be pleasant and interesting. At a wedding reception, wait until the cake is cut. At a dinner, you have to wait for dessert. [40:57] Tipping for a housekeeper during holidays is fine. [42:16] How to deal with personal questions. These questions are invasive and off limits. Keep your questions to yourself. Set boundaries with questions. [45:41] Listen to your gut, it will guide you. Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break. [46:49] We should all strive to surround ourselves with people who lift us up. [48:12] Diane answers the three rapid fire questions. [52:41] Etiquette is about class and grace. It's about raising our children to make others feel like the most important people in the room. It's about looking people in the eye when we speak to them. It's about listening instead of speaking. It's about putting down our phones. It's about extending a hand rather than a text. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. Thank you! ::: Hiking in Eastern Europe with Kids Diane moved to Serbia when she was 22 years old. An avid hiker, camper and outdoors lover since childhood, she found many beautiful places to go hiking in Eastern Europe. Her daughter Isabella is now six years old and goes camping with her mom whenever they have the chance. They have been hiking and slept under stars in countries like Kosovo, Albania, Romania and other places that are great for camping in Eastern Europe. Hiking in Eastern Europe with kids isn't as common as it is in some parts of the world. And camping in Eastern Europe, she explains, often involves staying in building you reserve in advance. The area's natural beauty, however, is spectacular, and the Slovenian mountain trails are beautiful. The Different Styles of Camping in Eastern Europe Diane explains some of the different forms of camping and hiking in Eastern europe that she comes across. Most locals join hiking and camping clubs. Others do "car camping," where you pitch a tent right next to where you park. When Diane and Isabella go camping in Eastern Europe, they prefer to hike in. By hiking in, they get away from the noise of cars and people and the cit and truly enjoy the natural world. This kind of backpacking and "wild camping" is what they enjoy best. There are other classiifcations of hiking and camping in Europe that she's come across. Some people classify their style as through hikers and ultralight campers. This is a style of camping in which weight and mobility are key. While Diane appreciates the passion of thethrough hikers and ultralight campers, the best camping in Eastern Europe she's found is at a slower, more relaxed pace. The Joy of Camping in Eastern Europe with Kids Diane details a typical camping trip and talks about some of the best camping in Eastern Europe she's found so far. Does she come across many others camping and hiking in Eastern Europe with kids? Not often, she says, but one particular camping trip inspired her to start her family camping blog. As she describes in the interview, she went hiking with friends and their children. While apprehensive at first, she watched her friend open up and enjoy the experience. The worry for her child's safety in the woods soon turned to joy. They had a great time. After that, Diane knew she needed to write about it more. What You Need for Hiking & Camping with Kids A lot of people think you need expensive and specialized gear to go hiking in Eastern Europe or anywhere else. You don't. Diane talks about the hiking boots, clothes and other camping gear they use, but emphasizes that it doesn't have to break the bank to enjoy camping in Eastern Europe. There are a few pieces of equipment that are very important, however. If you're planning on hiking in remote areas, a good water filter is crucial, she says. Good boots, too. A well-prepared first aid kit is also recommended, and Diane has a great piece on the kit she pput together. Look for that in the show notes. Hitchhiking with Kids Occasionally Diane and Isabella do some hitchhiking in Eastern Europe, as well. In the West today, hitchhiking is not even considered by many travelers, but you can still find hitchiking in Euope. Diane talks about hitchhiking in Eastern Europe with Isabella and how it has saved them long walks to the entrance to some of the best Slovenia mountain trails and other places to hike in Eastern Europe.
