Episode DescriptionWhen you think about 1980s killers, names like Bundy, Ramirez, and Dahmer come to mind. But what about the women? In this episode of Terror Talk: Killer Minds and Creepy Stuff, Shannon and [co-host's name] pull back the curtain on female psychopaths of the decade — both the ones who made headlines and the ones who terrified us on screen. We move through the decade year by year, uncovering shocking real crimes:Christine Falling, the teenage babysitter turned child killer.Genene Jones, the Texas nurse who murdered infants in her care.Diane Downs, whose narcissism led her to shoot her own children.Dorothea Puente, the “sweet old lady” running a boarding house of death.Griselda Blanco, the ruthless “Cocaine Godmother.”And the emergence of Aileen Wuornos, one of history's most infamous female serial killers. At the same time, Hollywood and international horror were building their own female psychopath archetypes:The Fan (1981) and the dangers of obsession.Bloody Birthday and Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker tearing apart family and innocence.Fatal Attraction (1987), where Glenn Close redefined the “woman scorned.”And finally Misery (1990), with Kathy Bates's Oscar-winning portrayal of Annie Wilkes.Together, we explore why these women — real and fictional — terrified the world. Why did betrayal of trust by mothers, nurses, and lovers cut deeper than stranger-danger? And what did these portrayals reveal about shifting gender roles, cultural anxieties, and the way society views dangerous women? This episode is part history lesson, part cultural analysis, and part psychological deep dive into why the 1980s cemented the female psychopath as both a real and reel icon.✨ Listen now and step into a decade where lipstick, motherhood, and obsession became weapons just as lethal as knives and guns.

They begged for help. They cried on camera. They told stories of kidnappers and faceless strangers. And the world believed them. But behind the tears was a darker truth—parents who murdered their own children, then turned their grief into theater for the cameras. In this episode, we uncover four of the most shocking cases where killers attempted to weaponize the media to hide their crimes: Jake and Rebecca Haro in California, Diane Downs in Oregon, Charles Stuart in Boston, and Chris Watts in Colorado. Each story reveals how easily the performance of grief can sway public opinion—and how devastating the fallout can be when lies unravel in plain sight.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

When a teenage girl and her lover were gunned down in 1948, the murders stunned a small Illinois town — and sparked a ghost story that refuses to die.Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version of #WeirdDarkness: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateIN THIS EPISODE: In 2016, near the infamous Nazca Lines, an incredible find came to light – not gold or jewels, not remnants of pottery, but a tomb. But what was found within the tomb has raised more questions than answers, as the resident mummies appears not to be human… just humanoid. (The Nazca Three-Fingered Mummy) *** Once in a while you'll hear of a horrible tragedy and the victim will be described as “ground into mincemeat”. In some case, this is not much of an exaggeration. (Ground Into Mincemeat) *** In 1983 Diane Downs shot her own children – Christie, Danny and Cheryl, in the backseat of the car. Miraculously, Christie Downs survived. (The Survival of Christie Downs) *** When it comes to demonic possession, it's often chalked up to mental illness – but sometimes the events surrounding the possessed person are so bizarre and unexplainable, you are almost forced to believe in the supernatural. Such was the case with Don Decker. (The Pennsylvania Rain Man) *** Cannibalism – just the word itself is enough to creep you out. Fortunately, cases of it are usually distant, in some far-off, remote, jungle area, done by natives who have yet to discover civilization. At least, that's what we like to believe. Unfortunately, it happens worldwide, nearer than you think. Like… in America. And in some cases, not so long ago. (American Cannibals) *** The death of a young girl and her boyfriend leave an Illinois town devastated… and it also left behind a lingering ghost. Could Bryan Kohberger's defense team really claim that the DNA evidence tying him to the Idaho student murders was planted? As the trial approaches, legal experts speculate that his attorneys may push the argument that the knife sheath found at the crime scene—with Kohberger's DNA on it—was not left by him, but instead placed there by someone else. But is that even possible? In this episode, we break down how forensic DNA collection works, the scientific hurdles of fabricating evidence, and why this type of defense has rarely succeeded in past high-profile murder trials. From Cristhian Bahena Rivera's “masked men” excuse to Diane Downs' infamous “bushy-haired stranger” claim, we examine how guilty defendants have historically used the “I was framed” strategy to shift blame—and why it has failed almost every time. What does it take to successfully argue that evidence was planted? What do juries really think when they hear this defense? And most importantly, does Kohberger's case fit the pattern of past failures, or could his legal team have a legitimate argument? Join us as we explore the forensic science, legal precedents, and psychological factors behind the “planted evidence” defense. Whether you've been following the Kohberger case closely or are interested in the tactics used in major true crime trials, this episode will break down the facts, the myths, and the reality of this controversial defense strategy. In this chilling Midnight Library session, we dive into the haunting legend of La Llorona, the weeping woman of Latin American folklore, and the curse that follows her story. Starting with the 2019 horror film “The Curse of La Llorona,” we explore the tale's key themes of loss, guilt, and revenge, and how this legendary mother, condemned to an eternity of sorrow, has resonated across cultures. We also turn our attention to real-life stories that echo the dark legacy of La Llorona, looking at the tragic cases of mothers like Diane Downs and Susan Smith, whose actions haunt our understanding of motherhood. Join us as we unravel folklore and fact, weaving together horror, history, and humanity. IN THIS EPISODE: In 2016, near the infamous Nazca Lines, an incredible find came to light – not gold or jewels, not remnants of pottery, but a tomb. What a CreepSeason 24, Episode 7Diane DownsDiane Downs gained infamy for the 1983 shooting of her three children, one of whom died, in Springfield, Oregon. The case became highly publicized due to the shocking nature of the crime and the subsequent investigation and trial. On May 19, 1983, Diane Downs drove her children to a rural road and shot them at close range. She then drove VERY SLOWLY  to a hospital, claiming that a “bushy-haired stranger” had shot her and her children during a carjacking attempt. However, inconsistencies in her story and evidence led investigators to suspect her involvement in the crime. In 1983, Diane Downs shot her three children and blamed it on someone who wanted to steal her car. Diane had a superficial gunshot wound to her arm as she pulled her car into the ambulance bay of a hospital in Springfield, Oregon. She told hospital staff and later law enforcement that a shaggy-haired man had shot them while attempting to steal her car. One of Diane's daughters was pronounced dead at the hospital, while her other two children lived but suffered significant life-changing injuries. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss Diane Downs, who became one of the most hated women in America. The story she told law enforcement changed a few times, and they quickly saw through it. The blood evidence also contradicted her stories. At trial, Diane's oldest daughter had recovered to the point where she could speak, and she told the packed courtroom that it was her mom who shot them. The motive for the shootings left everyone in disbelief. You can help support the show at patreon.com/criminology An Emash Digital production Learn more about your ad choices. On May 19th 1983, Diane Downs was driving down a secluded country road, with her three children Christie (8) Cheryl(7) and Danny (3).  They were out sight seeing after dusk, on the way home from Diane's friends home.  Everything, was going fine, until a 'bushy haired stranger' stepped out into the road, seemingly flagging down Diane as she drove.  Diane, not one to shy away from helping people, stopped her car, and got right out to address the man and, see if she could be of some assistance.  It was then that the man brandished a gun!  He informed Diane that he wanted her car, and when she responded with "you have got to be kidding me" the man, reached into the vehicle, somehow able to spot the children that were laying down, and he shot Cheryl, Danny, and Christie twice.  Diane, knew if she let this man take her car her children were going to die.  So she pretended to throw her keys, and when he fell for the trick, she got back in her car a drove like crazy to Mackenzie-Willamette Hospital. If you know this story, you know that not everything is as it seems. This is the story of the worlds most (or at least in the running for) evil mother.Sources are 'Small Sacrifices" by Anne RuleOperah Winfrey interview with DianeInside EditionABC News1984 interview with Ann JaegerAll of her Parole interviews #dianedowns #evil #evilmommy #evilmommy #murder #truecrime #vile #brassunicorn #oregan #rot #podcast #truecrimepodcast #tuesday #patreonSupport the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! In some case, this is not much of an exaggeration. (Ground Into Mincemeat) *** In 2016, near the infamous Nazca Lines, an incredible find came to light – not gold or jewels, not remnants of pottery, but a tomb. But what was found within the tomb has raised more questions than answers, as the resident mummies appears not to be human… just humanoid. (The Nazca Three-Fingered Mummy) *** In 1983 Diane Downs shot her own children – Christie, Danny and Cheryl, in the backseat of the car.
