On November 4th, 1979, Iranian students overran the U.S. embassy in Tehran intending to stage a short sit-in protest. But after they detained embassy staff, what started out as a sit-in grew into a hostage crisis that lasted for more than a year. Iran's new political and religious leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini, took advantage of the situation to consolidate his grip on power. Today, Lindsay is joined by journalist Mark Bowden to talk about the hostage crisis and what it cost the Carter administration. Bowden is the author of Guests of the Ayatollah: The Iran Hostage Crisis: The First Battle in America's War with Militant Islam.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Andrew Brodsky: Ping Andrew Brodsky is an award-winning professor, management consultant, and virtual communications expert at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. He is an expert in workplace technology, communication, and productivity, and serves as the CEO of Ping Group. He is the author of Ping: The Secrets of Successful Virtual Communication*. We've all heard the well intended advice that having interactions in person is always best. And that being as close to perfect as possible is ideal. Turns out, not always. In this conversation, Andrew and I explore how adapting to the context of tough situations can help you show up in a way that's helpful for the other party and for you. Key Points In virtual interactions, what feels authentic to you may not seem authentic to the person you're interacting with. While video is best for being present, it may not be best when your underlying emotions could leak into a situation. Surface acting helps us all land with the other party more authentically. Audio only can help this land better. If using a less rich medium to communicate (i.e. email instead of a conversation) it's helpful to explain why you made that choice. People who appear perfectly competent may not be as likable. Consider surfacing blunders that aren't central to the core expertise of your work. We often default to the medium that works best for us. Consider what will land best with the other party. On October 3, 1993, about a hundred elite U.S. soldiers were dropped by helicopter into the teeming market in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia. Their mission was to abduct two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord and return to base. It was supposed to take an hour. Instead, they found themselves pinned down through a long and terrible night fighting against thousands of heavily-armed Somalis. The following morning, eighteen Americans were dead and more than seventy had been badly wounded.Drawing on interviews from both sides, army records, audiotapes, and videos (some of the material is still classified), Bowden's minute-by-minute narrative is one of the most exciting accounts of modern combat ever written—a riveting story that captures the heroism, courage, and brutality of battle.

Black Hawk Down (2001) describes the plight of the U.S. crew of a Black Hawk helicopter that is shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu during the civil war in Somalia in October 1993. The battle resulted in the death of 18 American soldiers and hundreds of Somalis; it also prompted the U.S. withdrawal from Somalia after images of dead U.S. soldiers being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu by enraged Somalis were broadcast on American television. Directed by Ridley Scott from a book by Mark Bowden, Black Hawk Down is a gritty action movie that captures the brutal nature of urban warfare. It also provides a window into a host of complex international legal and political issues surrounding humanitarian intervention in the aftermath of the Cold War. Joining me is Greg Fox, Professor and Director of the Program for International Legal Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit. Now that so much of our communications are digital, such as texts, emails, and chats, we miss out on the tone and facial expressions to help us understand the intent and content in communication. It's important to know ourselves well enough to know what areas we'll be more easily influenced and are susceptible to being deceived. The greater our desire for something to be true, the easier it is for us to be scammed. Today's guest is Mark Bowden. Mark is a world-renowned body language expert, keynote speaker, and best-selling author. He is the founder of the communication training company, TruthPlane. Mark is also a member of The Behavior Panel on YouTube. Show Notes: [1:08] - Mark shares his background and what motivated him to specialize in human behavior. [2:34] - There are parts of the brain that are activated when we first meet someone new. [3:56] - Think about how many people you see on a regular day. Some you will notice and some you will not. [7:03] - There are certain parts of the brain that can overwrite natural instinct. [10:02] - Mark demonstrates how body language changes when there is perceived risk. [14:50] - Body language signals can be perceived inaccurately. People can also change their body language to send different signals. [17:15] - So many signals that our brains rely on in communication disappear when we cannot see the person we're talking to. [19:16] - Mark gives an example of how the human brain perceives the bait of a scam. [22:48] - The first step in critical thinking is to suspend judgment. [25:58] - “You can only con a greedy man.” Think about what you want so much that if it were offered, you lose your sense of judgment. [28:33] - If anyone ever tells you that something seems like it isn't true, suspend judgment and look into it. [30:32] - It's a risky world. There are people who have dedicated their lives to deceiving others. [35:13] - Part of critical thinking is asking other people whom you trust about what they think. [39:56] - Sometimes we will set people up to see how they will respond. [43:11] - It is best to have an open mind and be willing to see things for what they are over what you want them to be. In a revealing episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," guest Mark Bowden, a renowned English author and body language expert, delves into the complex world of non-verbal cues in the context of the infamous Alex Murdaugh case. Bowden shares his expertise on interpreting the silent signals that can betray one's true intentions, providing a fascinating lens through which to view Murdaugh's behavior during his trial and the conflicting narratives surrounding the murders. The role of belief and conviction in shaping behavior, highlighting cases where individuals' deep-seated beliefs may lead them to commit acts incomprehensible to others or even to themselves. The societal and relational context of lying, where the probability of deception is influenced by perceived risks and the dynamics of the interrogator-suspect relationship. The importance of survival instincts in changing beliefs and behaviors, especially when fundamental needs are threatened or when faced with monumental shifts in circumstances.
