Music Matters host Darrell Craig Harris interviews The Builders and The Butchers frontman/lead vocalist Ryan Sollee from his home in Portland Oregon to talk about the bands new releases, upcoming shows, and more in this new interview! About the band The Builders and the Butchers were formed in the fall of 2005 in Portland, Oregon. The band's first two years consisted of busking, playing house shows, and showing up unannounced anywhere around Portland where people were gathered. Folks began to take notice and the band transitioned slowly, going from playing on the floor of venues unplugged to gradually adding a mic here, an amp there, until they organically grew into one of the most exciting live acts in the Pacific Northwest. Even when plugged in, a cornerstone of almost every builders show is playing on the floor at some point during the set. Touring relentlessly from 2007-2012 The Builders gathered a cult dedicated fan base across the US and Europe. Playing dozens of music festivals like Sasquatch and Lollapalooza, as well as supporting artists like Portugal. The Man, Amanda Palmer, Murder By Death, and Heartless Bastards. Today's guest is a family favorite. That means I'm talking with Erika Wennerstrom from Heartless Bastards. There are times when I'm completely blown away that an artist agrees to be a guest on this podcast and this is one of those moments. But Erika was and is incredibly kind and gracious. We start off like we usually do, talking about what got her into music. It turns out that she knew she was going to be a singer by around the age of four. We talk about early bands, like Shesus, the transformation from a shy, awkward person to fronting a band, and how she came up with the name Heartless Bastards. The band's sound has evolved over the course of six albums. Erika talks about struggling with writer's block, stepping back from the band to regroup, and doing her solo album. After a brief tangent on designed obsolescence, Erika pulls the curtain back on the latest Heartless Bastards album, A Beautiful Life. Disney and James Bond were influences to a few songs and Laurel Canyon asserts its influence. Erika is full of great stories, like how Patrick Kearney of The Black Keys ended up with her demos, growing up with The Ohio Players (at least one of them), and swinging by Robert Plant's house to pick him up for drinks (he had shotgun, of course). Erika is currently writing music for the next Heartless Bastards album so keep following their social media accounts and theheartlessbastards.com for updates. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. The brainchild of frontwoman, Erika Wennerstrom, The Heartless Bastards released their 6th album A Beautiful Life in 2021 and are celebrating 20 years as a band.
Indie rock outfit Beau Jennings & The Tigers present their new single 'People in This Town', out June 9 via Oklahoma-based record label Black Mesa Records. What starts as a scrappy ten seconds of scuffling and static emerges as a summer anthem from this Oklahoma band. With their classic 80's AM radio American rock n' roll sound filtered through their collective influences (gospel, country, folk, and indie rock), the single follows 2022's full-length album 'Heavy Light', which drew critical parallels to Tom Petty, The Wallflowers and Bruce Springsteen, and subsequent singles 'I've Got Your Heart Right Here' and 'Midnight Service'. Jennings' recording has just reached the two decade mark, in that time having collaborated with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Richard Swift and filmmaker Bradley Beesley (Fearless Freaks, Okie Noodling) and shared the stage with Dwight Yoakam, Robert Cray, Heartless Bastards, Ray Wylie Hubbard and John Moreland. In this new single, Jennings imagines the patrons of a bar on the outskirts—inspired by a real blink-and-you'll-miss-it building in his hometown of Norman, Oklahoma. Having barely noticed it for much of his life, a recent drive nearby prompted Jennings to conjure the figures who might be congregating there. “'People In This Town' is really just about the overlooked or hidden aspects of a small town that are often taken for granted. Norman, OK is governed by religion, sports, and partying and while that maybe isn't that different from other places, those are still powerful forces that shape people's lives,” says Beau Jennings. #Music #Interviews #SocialMedia #Beau #America #Artists #BruceSpringsteen
It sounds like the setup to a joke: "A punk rock guitarist and a preacher's daughter walk into a theater..." But when Billy Alletzhauser and Beth Harris starting singing songs together in 2004, the result was pure magic. Their band, The Hiders, is the Kevin Bacon of music, with connections to Ass Ponys, The Afghan Whigs, Throneberry, Wussy, Heartless Bastards, Band of Horses, Plow On Boy, Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, Pearlene and more. And their sound is an amazing amalgamation of folk, country, rock, psychedelia, bluegrass, and indie rock. We talked to B & B about their start, the band's evolution, Billy's Ass Ponys tenure, Beth's harmony vocal work with Erika Wennerstrom and Heartless Bastards, the Hiders most recent album (2021's Forever at the End) and their plans for the year ahead.

Today I share my conversation with my niece Eva Mae Widmann. She's 12 years old, doesn't consider herself an expert in any way, but I ask her some questions about how she does the things in life that she enjoys, as well as how she motivates herself to do the things she doesn't enjoy. We cover crafts, cooking, sports, the ukelele and self care. Everyone's got something to share with one another no matter age or status. For me, that's the beauty of today's show. Thanks Eva!Here's Brightside's hacks that I reference with more details on those. Also, life hacks from 5-Minute Crafty Girls. And some other cool Buzzfeed life hacks.Joyce's food cutting life hacks! We listened to "Disparate Youth" by Santigold, "You Could Be So Happy" by Heartless Bastards, "Date with the Night" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" by Cat Power.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFY | STITCHERITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCASTITCHER: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/she-wants/i-want-what-she-has?refid=stpr'Follow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcastTWITTER * https://twitter.com/wantwhatshehas
Newski been featured on Rolling Stone, NPR, American Songwriter, SiriusXM, Boston Globe, and Billboard. He continues to tour over 100 dates per year. He's also the host of the popular podcast, Dirt from the Road, where he chats with musicians about their strangest travel stories, mental health boosts, and how to navigate the hurdles of being a person in modern times. Guests include All American Rejects, Dashboard Confessional, Nada Surf, Stelth Ulvang (The Lumineers), Guster, Heartless Bastards, The Verve Pipe, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Barenaked Ladies co-founder, Steven Page. Starting with couple of doodles Newski posted to social media making light of his struggle with anxiety and depression, they garnered a surprising and overwhelming response and he decided to make his relatable coping mechanism of drawings into a series. Now, Newski presents three years' worth of drawings in his new book, It's Hard to be a Person, offering mental health boosts through humor and relatable quips about the perils of living in our world with a mental illness. Newski's drawings offer a warmth and innocence that comforts readers and reflects their own experiences to assert that, despite the taboo of mental illness, most of us relate to each other on a deeper level when it comes to mental health. Following up on my first annual "freedom" themed show, this year, I return to the book, You Are Now Less Dumb, to continue sharing about different cognitive biases we all likely have. Last year I touched on "Narrative Bias" (you are a being capable of logic and reason who falls short of that ideal in predictable ways) and "The Backfire Effect" (when your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger). This year I turn to "The No True Scotsman Fallacy" (you will shift your definitions to protect your ideologies) and "The Illusion of Asymmetric Insight" (you are driven to create and form groups and then believe others are wrong just because they are others). But first, I talk about "self delusion" from the introduction to the book which gives a nice overview of our general misconceptions. Why do I care about these things? Well because I fancy myself an independent thinker, but the only real way to be sure of that, if surety is even possible, is for me to look for holes in my thinking and this book does a fabulous job of helping me to see where I fall short. So, if you too want to free your mind and be truly independent, then this is the show for you! Here's my article on "unhiddenness."You can hear my accompanying playlist featuring "Dreaming" by Blondie, "Roam" by the B52's, "Freedom" by George Michael, "Holiday" by Madonna, ""Free Your Mind" by En Vogue, "Freedom" by Beyonce, "My Power" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, and my fave "Revolution" by the Heartless Bastards, lyrics below:Where you going, my friend?Have you forgotten whenThere was a time filled with hope instead of fear that's in your heartThere was a time when life was simple and innocent to startDo you remember?Do you remember?Where you going, my friend?Have you forgotten whenThere was a time when false information wasn't so rampant in the sphereThere was a time when you weren't questioning everything you hearDo you remember?Do you remember?Constantly being advertised, your life commercialized and disguisedAs happiness in pills and potions, fancy threads and cars in motionHypnotized by gilded lies to line the pockets of so fewWhile hungry politicians feed bullshit to the massesTo ensure their statuses and further divide the classesUh-huhAnd you were born with a voice so open up and speak your mindRaise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don't hesitateNo need to be better or smarter than anybody elseLeave judgement at the door for others and yourselfThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindBig Brother's watching you and trying to sell you something newAnd I just want to take away take away the bluesBig Brother's watching you and trying to sell you something newAnd I just want to take away take away the bluesThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionWhen I get up, oh, I get up in the morningAll I really want is the truthOh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morningAll I really need is the truthYou were born with a voice so open up and speak your mindRaise consciousness and elevate how we all relate don't hesitateNo need to be better or smarter than anybody elseLeave judgement at the door for others and yourselfThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindWhen I get up, oh, I get up in the morningAll I really want is the truthOh, when I open my eyes and I get up in the morningAll I really need is the truthRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionRevolutionThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindThe revolution is in your mindToday's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. This week, we hear some stories and interviews from our archives. We find out what a Reveal/APM Reports investigation tells us about police de-escalation training in New England, and visit police in New Hampshire who are reaching out to children who've been traumatized by witnessing crime. We also explore the work of Marsden Hartley, whose art defined the rocky coast, the looming hills, and the working men of Maine. Plus we visit New England's biggest flea market, where the people are as fascinating as the stuff on display. A lobster made from horseshoes at the Brimfield Antiques Flea Market. Photo by Ziwei Zhang De-Escalation Many of the high-profile police shootings of the last few years across the U.S. have a disturbing common thread: they happen within a few minutes, or even a few seconds, after police arrive on the scene. Several states require “de-escalation” training for their police officers. It’s meant to avoid situations where deadly force is viewed as the only resort. Officer Jennifer Lazarchic at a police training session in March 2016. Photo by Courtney Perry for MPR News In New England, three of our six states have such mandates: Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Still, training requirements, and how well they are carried out, vary from state to state. Below: An interactive map from APM Reports. A recent episode of Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting worked with APM Reports to examine de-escalation state by state. Our guest is APM Reports correspondent Curtis Gilbert, author of the report “Not Trained to Not Kill.” We dig into the details and learn how New England states measure up. Types of police calls the Manchester ACERT team responded to July 2016 through March 2017. Graphic by Sara Plourde for NHPR When police respond to a domestic violence call or a drug overdose, children are often on the scene when officers arrive. Manchester, New Hampshire police found that in 2015, 400 children had been on-scene during such calls. Research shows that children exposed to trauma are more likely to be violent — and victims of violence — later in life. So Manchester police officers are trying something new: returning to the scene of such crises to see if they can help. The first-of-its-kind program is called ACERT: Adverse Childhood Experiences Response Team. New Hampshire Public Radio’s Emily Corwin reports. Marsden Hartley’s Maine Mt. Katahdin in Maine, Autumn -2 by Marsden Hartley, 1939-40, Metropolitan Museum of Art Portrait of Marsden Hartley by Carl Van Vechten, U.S. Library of Congress In the permanent collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum, the nation's oldest art museum in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, is a painting by Marsden Hartley called “Down East Young Blades,” depicting three colorful figures standing on a pier. Massive, strapping, working men with comically broad shoulders are pictured with the images of their trade: lobsters, fish, and logs. Hartley's career, stretching from the early years of the 20th century to his death in 1943, celebrated the vast and wild scenery of New England; specifically, his home state of Maine. The exhibition “Marsden Hartley's Maine” will be featured at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine July 8 through November 12, 2017. (“Downeast Young Blades” is on loan from the Wadsworth for the exhibition). Our guest Donna Cassidy, Professor of Art and American and New England Studies at the University of Southern Maine, co-authored the exhibition book about the artist's relationship with the Pine Tree State. Fiddlers and Peddlers Of the 530 refugees who arrived in the New Haven metro area last year, more than 270 were children. Many have just finished their first year in school in the United States. WNPR's Diane Orson reports on an arts program that's partnered with the region's resettlement agency to create a special after-school violin class for the young refugees. A piece of “folk art” made from a carousel horse and a mannequin. Photo by Ziwei Zhang In the 1954 film Brigadoon, the protagonists discover a magical village that only appears for one day every hundred years. Brimfield, Massachusetts is kind of like that. The town only has about 3,500 permanent residents. But for a week in each of May, July, and September, the town transforms into a bustling tent city known as the Brimfield Antique Flea Market. The market dates back to the 1950s and today boasts over 250,000 visitors, stretching half a mile down Route 20. The next show will run July 11 to July 16. At a market like this, the stuff comes with stories, and NEXT producer Andrea Muraskin found plenty on her visit last September. Be sure to check out the slideshow below.
