The brainchild of frontwoman, Erika Wennerstrom, The Heartless Bastards released their 6th album A Beautiful Life in 2021 and are celebrating 20 years as a band.
Indie rock outfit Beau Jennings & The Tigers present their new single 'People in This Town', out June 9 via Oklahoma-based record label Black Mesa Records. What starts as a scrappy ten seconds of scuffling and static emerges as a summer anthem from this Oklahoma band. With their classic 80's AM radio American rock n' roll sound filtered through their collective influences (gospel, country, folk, and indie rock), the single follows 2022's full-length album 'Heavy Light', which drew critical parallels to Tom Petty, The Wallflowers and Bruce Springsteen, and subsequent singles 'I've Got Your Heart Right Here' and 'Midnight Service'. Jennings' recording has just reached the two decade mark, in that time having collaborated with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Richard Swift and filmmaker Bradley Beesley (Fearless Freaks, Okie Noodling) and shared the stage with Dwight Yoakam, Robert Cray, Heartless Bastards, Ray Wylie Hubbard and John Moreland. In this new single, Jennings imagines the patrons of a bar on the outskirts—inspired by a real blink-and-you'll-miss-it building in his hometown of Norman, Oklahoma. Having barely noticed it for much of his life, a recent drive nearby prompted Jennings to conjure the figures who might be congregating there. “'People In This Town' is really just about the overlooked or hidden aspects of a small town that are often taken for granted. Norman, OK is governed by religion, sports, and partying and while that maybe isn't that different from other places, those are still powerful forces that shape people's lives,” says Beau Jennings. #Music #Interviews #SocialMedia #Beau #America #Artists #BruceSpringsteen
It sounds like the setup to a joke: "A punk rock guitarist and a preacher's daughter walk into a theater..." But when Billy Alletzhauser and Beth Harris starting singing songs together in 2004, the result was pure magic. Their band, The Hiders, is the Kevin Bacon of music, with connections to Ass Ponys, The Afghan Whigs, Throneberry, Wussy, Heartless Bastards, Band of Horses, Plow On Boy, Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, Pearlene and more. And their sound is an amazing amalgamation of folk, country, rock, psychedelia, bluegrass, and indie rock. We talked to B & B about their start, the band's evolution, Billy's Ass Ponys tenure, Beth's harmony vocal work with Erika Wennerstrom and Heartless Bastards, the Hiders most recent album (2021's Forever at the End) and their plans for the year ahead.

Welcome to Roadcase!! Erika Wennerstrom has been performing in her band Heartless Bastards for close to 20 years now has recently released a gorgeous new album, A Beautiful Life, which she co-produced with Kevin Ratterman, in which confronts the challenges and nuances of the day within a truly innovative sonic landscape. A native of Ohio, Erika now calls Austin, TX home, and she talks about her early days booking her own shows, working hard and playing every gig she could -- which ultimately resulted in a chance meeting with Patrick Carney of The Black Keys and signing with Fat Possum Records! Erika has been defiant in staying true to herself and considers herself "a songwriter that performs live." She has played countless shows and her tours with Drive-By Truckers are legendary. Although the band was forced to cancel their January 2022 European dates due to Covid, she will be hitting the road again in February and April with Flaming Lips -- a unique combination of artistry for sure! So hop on aboard the Roadcase bus and learn more about this thoughtful and one-of-a-kind artist, Erika Wennerstrom. Today I share my conversation with my niece Eva Mae Widmann. We cover crafts, cooking, sports, the ukelele and self care. Everyone's got something to share with one another no matter age or status. For me, that's the beauty of today's show. Following up on my first annual "freedom" themed show, this year, I return to the book, You Are Now Less Dumb, to continue sharing about different cognitive biases we all likely have. Last year I touched on "Narrative Bias" (you are a being capable of logic and reason who falls short of that ideal in predictable ways) and "The Backfire Effect" (when your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger). This year I turn to "The No True Scotsman Fallacy" (you will shift your definitions to protect your ideologies) and "The Illusion of Asymmetric Insight" (you are driven to create and form groups and then believe others are wrong just because they are others). But first, I talk about "self delusion" from the introduction to the book which gives a nice overview of our general misconceptions. Why do I care about these things? Well because I fancy myself an independent thinker, but the only real way to be sure of that, if surety is even possible, is for me to look for holes in my thinking and this book does a fabulous job of helping me to see where I fall short. We have a bunch of new podcast episodes to tell you about. And as I mentioned, our Phish podcasts will be doing a collaboration—here's the video, in case you missed it. If you like what we're doing here, give us a review!Victoria Canal on Eric Krasno Plus One. Eric welcomes his friend, singer-songwriter Victoria Canal. Really cool conversation with a young artist. She grew up across three continents and moved every year, and used songwriting to channel her fears of not fitting in. Her newest EP, Victoria, released on August 28th, represents a giant step forward for Canal as a writer and producer, and the resulting tracks convey a maturity far beyond her 22 years. We include a piece of the interview here, and please subscribe to Eric Krasno Plus One! 90s Britpop on Beyond the Pond. This week, Dave and Brian look at the brief, brilliant peak of 1990s Britpop, exploring the foundations of the genre, the firework of a peak, the bands that defined it, and the post-Britpop era in popular rock. They look at bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp and more. Subscribe to Beyond the Pond here. Steven Hyden on Across the Margin. You all know Steven from his podcasts 36 From the Vault, Celebration Rock and others, and from his books Twilight of the Gods and Your Favorite Band is Killing Me. He's interviewed here by Michael Shields about his newest book, coming out this month, This Isn't Happening, Radiohead's Kid A and The Beginning of the 21st Century. Michael and Steven talk about this book, which explores the making and meaning of Radiohead's groundbreaking, controversial, revolutionary album. Subscribe to Across the Margin here. Erika Wennerstrom on Inside Out wTnS. On a new episode, Rob and Seth chat with Erika Wennerstrom of the Heartless Bastards. Rob and Seth chatted with Erika Wennerstrom of the Heartless Bastards shortly after she and her band had released the single, "Revolution." Erika talks about the message of the song, and how it is a part of a record that will be the first full-length release from Heartless Bastards in over five years. We hear the song in its entirety, and we hear Erika talk about how the record was completed just before COVID locked us all in our homes. We include a bunch of music from her debut solo record "Sweet Unknown" because Erika explains to us in detail about how the forthcoming Heartless Bastards release in many ways expands on themes that were a huge part of that brilliant debut solo release. She also shares with us how she has coped with her time during the pandemic. We also go into the Wayback Machine and learn of her early days in Dayton, and why she moved to Cincinnati. We also find out how her persistence there, and her insistence on playing a wildly under-attended gig in Akron would each serve to change her life forever. This episode covers plenty of other territory, and it demonstrates that Erika is a very sincere and thoughtful person beyond her writing and performing excellence.Music From The Episode:Heartless BastardsRevolution (new single)Parted Ways (from Arrow)Erika Wennerstrom Twisted Highway (from Sweet Unknown)Letting Go (from Sweet Unknown)Time (from Sweet Unknown)Be Good To Yourself (from Sweet Unknown)Gravity (from Sweet Unknown)Be Here To Love Me (from Tribute To Townes Van Zandt)Mahalia JacksonGo Tell It On The Mountain (from original 1962 Christmas With Mahalia record)Lhasa de Sala1001 Nights (from 2009 release Lhasa)Osiris Media - www.osirispod.comInside Out w/ Turner and Seth - insideoutwtns.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jesse Ebaugh of The Tender Things and Heartless Bastards elaborates on his creative process with Amy Wright at the DittyTV studios in Memphis, TN. Recorded June 2019 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Happy New Year, and Happy Birthday MOM! I pay homage to my Mom and my Grandma before digging into the crates so to speak to spin many of my favorite Erika Wennerstrom and Heartless Bastards songs. Sorry to all you podcast listeners, you won't get the music here, you'll have to check out the show archive in its entirety on Radio Kingston, or catch the Spotify playlist for the show. "Be Good to Yourself" comes from Erika's solo album, Sweet Unknown. In my birthday wishes to my Mom, I thank my Grandma who we lost on 12.3.19. At 91, she had overcome some big challenges in life, getting through the great depression and having to share a single pair of roller skates with her 6 siblings! I know, tragic. She was a bit of a strong willed woman, running away from home and skipping school, ending up in a girls school, graduated at 13 years old and went to work. Pregnant with my Mom at 18, she got herself out of an abusive relationship and went on to have two more children and a life full of lots of animal print outfits and furniture, colored contact lenses, fake fingernails, homemade jewelry, 9 grandkids, 12 great-grandkids and an always full freezer of homemade pudding pops. Thanks for all your strength grandma and all the memories!I also share some thoughts about the calendar, how Jan. 1 is a bit arbitrarily the start of the year- at one point in history the beginning of the year was March 25th, "Lady Day" - how these systems which we exist within are deserving of a rethink, or at least an acknowledgement that they were often put into place by a power driven patriarchy so that we can reverse/undo the damage they've caused. This year, I'd love to move the conversation into how we feminize our systems. Yes, there's still more work to be done with awakening and celebrating the feminine in human form, but let's include in the conversation how we feminize the government, religion, economy, calendar, corporate structures, etc. etc. It's not just about putting women in there. We need to be putting the correct type of feminine energy into the systems. Who wants to join in this conversation???Today's show was engineered by me at Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.In addition to Erika Wennerstrom and the Heartless Bastards, we heard music from our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! Erika Wennerstrom, the lead of Heartless Bastards, released her debut solo album, “Sweet Unknown,” in March of 2018 on Partisan Records. Wennerstrom’s solo songs are built on the same blues and folk foundations as her songs with the Bastards, but her flirtations with both psychedelic sounds and pop sensibilities are both ambitious and clear on “Sweet Unknown.” Although the break with the band was mutual, Wennerstrom seems to be basking in newfound freedom, singing “I walk around this crowded town / I had to re-find my way / You know I couldn't remain the same / What it is, what it is, what it is / Don't fight the change within” on her song “Good to Be Alone.” Set List: Extraordinary Love Twisted Highway - interview - Staring Out the Window Letting Go Wennerstrom also performed a cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Be Here to Love Me" that is available on the WCPO Lounge Acts YouTube channel. -- Erika Wennerstrom's second WCPO Lounge Acts session was recorded on June 14, 2019 in the WCPO Digital Lounge in Cincinnati, OH. WCPO Lounge Acts features intimate in-studio performances and interviews from outstanding musical artists. Mixed by Brian Niesz. Hosted by Emmalee Smith.
In the fifth episode of the ALL NEW Anhedonic Headphones Podcast, Kevin interviews his co-worker, Jeremy. Outside of having worked at the co-op for a number of years, prior to that, Jeremy was heavily involved with the 400 Bar, an iconic (and now shuttered) dive bar on Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis, near the University of Minnesota campus. Literally a hole in the wall, it however attracted a cavalcade of local talent, as well as national names that were all on the cusp of bigger things. The conversation about the music scene in Minneapolis was so enthralling, Kevin forgot to ask Jeremy about his earliest musical memory; maybe some other time? Click here for more information about the AWARD WINNING music site, Anhedonic Headphones. Episode 4 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In this episode, we discussed: "Distance" by Beau Kinstler, from the 2005 self-released album Ocean. "Anytown Graffiti" by Pela, from the 2007 Great Society release Anytown Graffiti. "Rapture (Sweet Rapture)" by A.A. Bondy, from the 2007 Fat Possum release American Hearts. "Rise Up With Fists!!" by Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins, from the 2006 Team Love Records release Rabbit Fur Coat. "Pale White Horse" by The Pines, from the 2004 Trailer Records release The Pines; this Podcast uses a live/in-studio recording of the song from a 2013 Audio Tree session. "Tying My Shoes" and "Closing The Doors," both by Caroline Smith and The Goodnight Sleeps, from the 2008 self-released album Backyard Tent Set. "Piano Song" by The Heartless Bastards, from the 2004 Fat Possum release Stairs and Elevators. Please note the music played on the Anhedonic Headphones is used with the intent for discussion and promotional purposes only. Please do not sue me because someone wanted to talk about your song on the show. Thank you for understanding.

Erika Wennerstrom dips into The Marinade. Erika's album "Sweet Unknown" was our favorite in a crowded 2018 field. After her band Heartless Bastards went on hiatus in 2015, Erika set out to find her next creative outlet. The result is a brilliant solo effort. Erika sits down with us backstage at The Plaza Live in Orlando, FL, before her show with Lucinda Williams and Drive-by Truckers. We talk about her experience with ayahuasca, how hiking in Big Bend opened the creative spigot and even enjoy a silent cameo from Patterson Hood of Drive-by Truckers. You can buy Erika's excellent record and keep up with all things Erika Wennerstrom at erikawennerstrom.com.
The latest Kyle Meredith With... is a special triple episode, featuring three musicians — Brandi Carlile, Courtney Barnett, and Erika Wennerstrom — who all have brand-new records out recently. Carlile discusses her politically charged single, “The Joke”, and the idea of radical acceptance and forgiveness and revisits her album The Story. Barnett talks about the shift in her songwriting toward bigger worldwide issues, her tee shirt collection, and the chances of her and Jen Cloher (Australian singer-songwriter and Barnett’s wife) doing an album together in the future. Finally, Wennerstrom shares what it’s been like taking time away from the Heartless Bastards, how trips to faraway lands influenced the writing of her new record, and the mythos of the highway. My worst interview ever was with Erika Wennerstrom from the Heartless Bastards. I was a mess, everything was going wrong, and it was not great. At all. Recently I had the opportunity to change the ending to that story when The post Coworking Out Loud Podcast 008 – Worst Interview Ever appeared first on Cat Johnson Co.
Erika Wennerstrom has visited our studio before with her Americana-rock band Heartless Bastards. This year, the singer and guitarist took a break from that band to release her debut solo album, "Sweet Unknown." Inspired by a trip to the Amazon rainforest, the record features a more psychedelic sound for Wennerstrom, whose robust vocals are always a riveting aspect of her music. Wennerstrom returned to the CPR Performance Studio last month before a show at Denver's Globe Hall. She played four songs and spoke with Alisha Sweeney about how taking a break from Heartless Bastards helped her songwriting, writing the album on a camping trip in West Texas and how she connects with people through music.
It’s fascinating when an artist can take personal experience and turn it into inspiring music. That’s what The Heartless Bastards' leader has done on her solo debut album.

Both 2nd-generation immigrants (Italian-American and Puerto Rican-American, respectively), they soon found their musical brethren across America, recruiting Andrew Zehnal (drums) from Cleveland, Adam Bock (keyboard/vocals) from St. Louis, and Brian Courage (bass) from Long Island. Their debut album Ride On The Train garnered song and video premieres from Rolling Stone, Paste, and American Songwriter, plus music placements in the worldwide trailer for the Michael Keaton film “The Founder,” the Willem Dafoe/Matt Dillon film “Bad Country,” Direct TV's "Kingdom," Showtime’s “Shameless,” MTV’s “Real World,” and an online ad campaign for Abercrombie & Fitch. They've toured America and Europe, headlining and supporting such bands as The Zombies, Jackie Greene, Heartless Bastards, Rich Robinson, of Black Crowes, and Jesse Malin. This week, we hear some stories and interviews from our archives. We find out what a Reveal/APM Reports investigation tells us about police de-escalation training in New England, and visit police in New Hampshire who are reaching out to children who've been traumatized by witnessing crime. We also explore the work of Marsden Hartley, whose art defined the rocky coast, the looming hills, and the working men of Maine. Plus we visit New England's biggest flea market, where the people are as fascinating as the stuff on display. A lobster made from horseshoes at the Brimfield Antiques Flea Market. Photo by Ziwei Zhang De-Escalation Many of the high-profile police shootings of the last few years across the U.S. have a disturbing common thread: they happen within a few minutes, or even a few seconds, after police arrive on the scene. Several states require “de-escalation” training for their police officers. It’s meant to avoid situations where deadly force is viewed as the only resort. Officer Jennifer Lazarchic at a police training session in March 2016. Photo by Courtney Perry for MPR News In New England, three of our six states have such mandates: Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Still, training requirements, and how well they are carried out, vary from state to state. Below: An interactive map from APM Reports. A recent episode of Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting worked with APM Reports to examine de-escalation state by state. Our guest is APM Reports correspondent Curtis Gilbert, author of the report “Not Trained to Not Kill.” We dig into the details and learn how New England states measure up. Types of police calls the Manchester ACERT team responded to July 2016 through March 2017. Graphic by Sara Plourde for NHPR When police respond to a domestic violence call or a drug overdose, children are often on the scene when officers arrive. Manchester, New Hampshire police found that in 2015, 400 children had been on-scene during such calls. Research shows that children exposed to trauma are more likely to be violent — and victims of violence — later in life. So Manchester police officers are trying something new: returning to the scene of such crises to see if they can help. The first-of-its-kind program is called ACERT: Adverse Childhood Experiences Response Team. New Hampshire Public Radio’s Emily Corwin reports. Marsden Hartley’s Maine Mt. Katahdin in Maine, Autumn -2 by Marsden Hartley, 1939-40, Metropolitan Museum of Art Portrait of Marsden Hartley by Carl Van Vechten, U.S. Library of Congress In the permanent collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum, the nation's oldest art museum in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, is a painting by Marsden Hartley called “Down East Young Blades,” depicting three colorful figures standing on a pier. Massive, strapping, working men with comically broad shoulders are pictured with the images of their trade: lobsters, fish, and logs. Hartley's career, stretching from the early years of the 20th century to his death in 1943, celebrated the vast and wild scenery of New England; specifically, his home state of Maine. The exhibition “Marsden Hartley's Maine” will be featured at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine July 8 through November 12, 2017. (“Downeast Young Blades” is on loan from the Wadsworth for the exhibition). Our guest Donna Cassidy, Professor of Art and American and New England Studies at the University of Southern Maine, co-authored the exhibition book about the artist's relationship with the Pine Tree State. Photo by Ziwei Zhang In the 1954 film Brigadoon, the protagonists discover a magical village that only appears for one day every hundred years. Brimfield, Massachusetts is kind of like that. The town only has about 3,500 permanent residents. But for a week in each of May, July, and September, the town transforms into a bustling tent city known as the Brimfield Antique Flea Market. The market dates back to the 1950s and today boasts over 250,000 visitors, stretching half a mile down Route 20. The next show will run July 11 to July 16. At a market like this, the stuff comes with stories, and NEXT producer Andrea Muraskin found plenty on her visit last September. Be sure to check out the slideshow below. Erika Wennerstrom, the creative force behind Heartless Bastards, discusses growing up in Dayton Ohio, signing to Fat Possum Records, and her techniques for bringing a song to life.
Since leaving the Cincinnati area a decade ago to live in the music mecca of Austin, Texas, Erika Wennerstrom has released four critically acclaimed albums with her band, including last year's Restless Ones. The group's signature mix of high energy rock and Wennerstrom's wailing, urgent vocals have made them one of today's most riveting live acts. But for this WCPO Lounge Acts session, Wennerstrom stripped it down to play three unreleased tracks that laid bare her emotions in a whole new way, digging into what she called her odes to "self love" and the search for, as she sings in the striking "Extraordinary Love," a place to call home."
Despite a January creativity drought striking nearly every White Tiger Radio contributor, Shanon and Jack managed to take to the air to discuss apathy, analyze Trump's appeal ahead of the Iowa caucuses, and discuss Harry Belafonte's harmonica player, the nature of truth, and much more, all while juggling two turntables and picking music on the fly. This is White Tiger Radio at its most raw, recorded live and served up to you as a podcast. Happy New Year and happy listening. Vibrant Masterpieces From The Bodies Of Exotic Animals The model-turned-Salem artist Christopher Marley transforms dead things into art. We’re not talking butterfly boxes or taxidermy here. Marley preserves exotic birds, insects, snakes, and even octopi using state-of-the-art techniques and then composes them in frames. They’re so exquisite, they’ve ended up on the walls of museums, high-end galleries, fancy furniture stores. And Beyonce herself has one! Marley's new book, "Biophilia," is available in stores. The Santa Photos Nobody WantedEvery year this time, families bundle up their children and take them to meet Santa and have a picture taken. The shoots are always memorable, for better or worse - either they’re adorable, or the child is crying, or the person sitting in poor Santa’s lap is no child. Now, a batch of vintage Santa photos too awkward to be taken home is the focus of installation at Newspace Center for Photography. Don't miss this slide show of the photos.Outgoing PNCA President Reflects on His Legacy Pacific Northwest College of Art's longtime president, Tom Manley, has taken a job leading Ohio's Antioch College. Hometown heroes include the Oregon Symphony, Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers, The Decemberists, and remix artist R.A.C. And the toast of the kindie set, Lori Henriques, is nominated for Best Children’s Album for her snappy, Frischberg-esque release, “How Great Can This Day Be.” We invited her into the studio as soon as we heard. Family, Unexpectedly Dissected Three women, three new novels: Kathleen Alcott’s “Infinite Home” concerns the tenants of a Brooklyn brownstone, Mary Gaitskill’s “The Mare” is about a Dominican girl who learns to ride, Claire Vaye Watkins’ “Gold Fame Citrus” is set in a drought-scarred California of the near future. Think Out Loud’s Allison Frost brought the authors together at Wordstock for a panel called “Unexpected Family,” and the result was unexpectedly intense. Heartless, But SoulfulWhile the Austin band Heartless Bastards was in town for a sold out Wonder Ballroom show recently, they stopped by opbmusic to play acoustic versions of songs from their newest release, “Restless Ones.” Two of the Bastards - lead vocal and guitarist Erika Wennerstrom and bassist Jesse Ebaugh - took a trip down memory lane with opbmusic’s Matt Drenik. A Tribute to the Godfather of Astoria ArtRoyal Nebeker spent 40 years living and teaching on the Oregon Coast, and he left an indelible imprint on the Northwest art world. Erika Wennerstrom sings and plays guitar and keyboards with the great Heartless Bastards, whose new album Restless Ones came out June 15th. Her band has threads of garage rock, blues and country — and the music of the great Texan singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard shares some of those same sounds. Wennerstrom and Hubbard are also fans of each other’s music, so we put them together for a Talkhouse Music Podcast and they dug deep into their songwriting process and had some laughs… and maybe a cry too.
