EPISODE SUMMARY In this energizing episode of Brand Retro, Mike Brevik sits down with returning guests Craig Kausen and Ben Olson to unpack the story and impact behind the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity's 16th Annual Red Dot Fundraising Event. What began as a simple idea, artists donating 12x12 works to raise funds, has evolved into a nationally recognized celebration of imagination, nostalgia, and community impact. This year marks a major shift: for the first time, the artists' stories will stand alongside their work, adding deeper meaning to every piece. Craig shares the philosophy behind the Center's mission, rooted in Chuck Jones' belief that imagination is more powerful than knowledge, while Ben brings firsthand perspective on how Red Dot sparked his own journey from fan to board member to regional creativity leader. They explore: Why creativity isn't limited to art, it fuels science, business, engineering, and leadership How a simple exercise (like drawing three circles) can unlock confidence in adults and children alike The generational power of Looney Tunes nostalgia Why Red Dot is "the most fun fundraiser you'll ever attend" How the Center has now impacted over one million people across 18 states And why exercising creativity is more important than ever in the age of AI Hosted at the Segerstrom Shelby Event Center in Irvine, Red Dot blends vintage cars, classic animation, live art, and silent auctions into a one-of-a-kind experience that celebrates both legacy and possibility. Whether you attend in person or bid online, this episode is a reminder that creativity isn't a luxury, it's a muscle. And when you exercise it, incredible things happen. Because sometimes all it takes is three circles… and someone who believes YOU CAN. Exercise during pregnancy has long been encouraged, but clear guidance on what actually drives measurable physiological benefits has often been inconsistent. Episode 6 of The Research Debrief unpacks a newly published systematic review and meta-analysis from the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology examining how structured exercise training during pregnancy impacts maternal biomarkers. The conversation moves beyond general outcomes and dives into what the latest science says about inflamation, metabolism, hormones and immune function — and what that means for fitness operators serving pregnant members. This Episode Explores: - A new systematic review and meta-analysis examining how exercise training during pregnancy impacts maternal biomarkers - Why combining aerobic and resistance training produces the strongest physiological benefits - How moderate to vigorous intensity exercise influences inflammatory, metabolic and hormonal markers - The importance of program duration — and why interventions longer than 12 weeks matter - Practical guidelines for structuring prenatal programs in health club settings This episode provides operators with evidence-based clarity on how to confidently program for pregnant members, highlighting that structured, longer-duration aerobic and strength training can positively influence key maternal health markers — creating opportunities for safe, strategic and science-backed prenatal offerings within clubs.
Unless a believer responds to the nudge of the Holy Spirit and prays, God cannot intervene in a situation where Satan is seeking to steal, kill, and destroy. God must go through the church to work in the earth. In this message, Pastor talks about 3 things that Christians must do to exercise spiritual authority in their prayers.
Do you remember your own middle school years? For most of us, it seemed brutal. Some things never change. Young peers can create, find, and point out all kinds of negative things in ways that are now sometimes defined as “bullying” or “harassment.” But if your home is place of refuge from that craziness, you will be instilling a healthy sense of resiliency that can sustain your kids through the pressure. One way to do this is to take the opposite approach of their peers. . . who are all too quick to point out and celebrate deficiencies. Look for and encourage your teen to develop their God-given gifts and abilities. Complement them on their successes. Point out their strengths. We need to be parents who are encouragers rather than discouragers. And, as we encourage our kids to develop their gifts, remind them of the importance of excellence. Exercising and developing one's gifts and abilities is ultimately an act of worship. See and celebrate the uniqueness God has placed in your kids.

I never thought heart disease would be part of my story. At 42, in the best shape of my life, I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and severe regurgitation. What started as a strange episode during a workout turned into months of fear, waiting, uncertainty, and eventually heart surgery. This is Part 1 of My Heart Story. In this episode of Anatomy of a Leader, I share what it was really like to be diagnosed with a heart condition at 42 — from early symptoms and medical tests to the emotional impact of living with uncertainty while raising young children and running a business. This is the beginning of a deeper series about fear, vulnerability, healing, and what happens when your body forces you to slow down and listen. This is not medical advice. This is my real story — shared in the hope that it helps someone feel less alone, recognise symptoms earlier, or feel brave enough to get checked. In this episode I talk about: – Mitral valve prolapse diagnosis – Heart palpitations and symptoms – ECG and echocardiogram experience – Waiting for cardiology appointments – Anxiety and fear after diagnosis – Exercising with a heart condition – Women's heart health being underdiagnosed – Why “being strong” can make illness lonelier00:00 Thought Heart Disease Was an Old Man's Problem00:51 I Was Physically Fit & Healthy01:20 The Workout That Changed Everything01:56 Why I Nearly Ignored The Symptoms03:14 Going To The GP03:45 ECG Referral & Experience06:11 Echo Referral & Experience 09:03 Hearing “Mitral Valve Prolapse”09:50 Waiting, Fear & Not Knowing13:00 Anxiety vs Heart Condition13:23 Tachycardia, A&E & Health System14:21 Symptoms of Mitral Valve Prolapse 16:12 Exercise Regularly & Monitor17:49 Exercising With A Heart Condition18:39 Loss Of Control & Trust20:38 Women's Heart Health Being Missed23:10 What I Wish I'd Known25:15 If You're Ignoring Symptoms — Please ListenFollow Maria Hvorostovsky:IG: https://www.instagram.com/anatomyofaleader/IG: https://www.instagram.com/mariahvorostovsky/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariahvo/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mariahvorostovsky/Website: https://www.anatomyofaleader.com/Artwork and video by https://www.londonbeautyphotographer.com/If you're living with a heart condition, supporting someone who is, or ignoring symptoms because life feels too busy — this episode is for you.
I strongly believe the way we teach fitness and athleticism is completely wrong. We start with competition. We teach that the goal is to win, to maximize, to go as hard as possible. And then we wonder why most adults stop.Once you are past 30, the number of people doing athletic activities is spectacularly low. I do not think this is about sedentary lifestyle. I think it is about how we frame fitness. If I train to win, I burn out. I get injured. I feel behind. My body slows down and I think I am losing. When I flip it, everything changes.I stop maximizing the short run. I focus on longevity. I focus on stretching this out for decades. Some days I go hard. Some days I recuperate. Some days I nurse what hurts.I am not training to beat anyone.I am training to live fully and joyfully for as long as I possibly can.

On this episode of https://Ready-Radio.com, host John Rush and co-host Pastor Bill Anderson of Prep to Protect (https://www.prep2protectco.com) dive into a timely question: what does true preparedness look like in a tense and unpredictable world? As protests, rising tensions, and concerns about power grid stability dominate headlines, they challenge listeners to think beyond reaction and focus on readiness, responsibility, and community strength. When does exercising a right become poor judgment? Are you preparing wisely—or simply reacting to fear? The conversation explores the importance of situational awareness, firearm responsibility, and why training and competence matter more than simply owning equipment. Bill emphasizes that preparedness isn't about panic—it's about wisdom, training, and knowing when to walk away from danger. They also ask listeners to consider: if a crisis struck your neighborhood tomorrow, would your community stand together—or fall apart? From safe firearm ownership to strengthening relationships with neighbors, the show urges practical steps that keep families safer when life's unexpected moments hit. Are you truly ready for the “What-Ifs” of Life? And are you preparing in ways that actually make a difference when it counts?

With anxiety off the charts as a growing epidemic among children and teens, we're spending all this week looking at strategies you can employ to prevent anxiety in the kids you know and love. One of the best ways to prevent anxiety is to stop overscheduling your kids. Research on today's culture points to the fact that our kids are so over-involved and feeling such incredible pressure to achieve at the highest levels in all of their activities, that they are crumbling under the pressure. One way to push back is to be sure that your kids are eating right, getting enough exercise, and sleeping nightly for the nine hours and fifteen minutes of uninterrupted sleep that's necessary for healthy growth and development. In addition, we must recognize the fact that God made us for a rhythm of work and rest. This includes the need for a Sabbath. What would happen if we recovered the practice of taking one day a week to rest? I'm sure we would see a decline in anxiety.

Rob Doar, attorney for the Gun Owners Caucus, joins Chad to discuss his analysis of the Alex Pretti shooting video showing that Pretti violated no laws before he was fatally shot. Doar also has direct criticism of federal officials and others who have shown great hypocrisy in calling Pretti the problem by lawfully exercising his 2nd Amendment rights while protesting.

Some challenges don't fail because we lack intelligence, expertise, or good intentions. They fail because the systems meant to hold them — the structures, relationships, and shared stories — aren't strong enough to carry the weight. In this episode of On the Balcony, Michael Koehler sits down with Tim O'Brien to explore one of the most quietly powerful ideas in Adaptive Leadership: the holding environment. At the center of the conversation is a real public case — Gina Raimondo's leadership of pension reform in Rhode Island — where the technical problem was solvable, but the adaptive challenge was immense. Retirements, livelihoods, and deeply held beliefs were at stake. Data alone couldn't move the system. Logic was not enough for people to absorb the loss. What made progress possible was the deliberate construction of a holding environment — one capable of containing fear, grief, anger, and conflict long enough for new meaning to emerge.Tim and Michael use this case to unpack what holding environments really are — not abstract "safe spaces," but designed conditions that help people stay in hard conversations without fleeing, fixing, or polarizing. What You'll Explore in This EpisodeWhat a holding environment actually is. Holding environments are the structures, relationships, and shared stories that make it possible for people to engage adaptive challenges without becoming too overwhelmed. As Tim describes it, a holding environment is not about removing distress — it's about recognizing and legitimizing what people are already carrying. The three components of a holding environment. The conversation explores structures and boundaries (time limits, spatial design, process clarity, and role boundaries all matter — from how long a meeting lasts, to who holds the microphone, to how a forum is framed); relationships both horizontal and vertical (holding environments depend on the quality of relationships among peers and the relationship between people and authority — trust, legitimacy, and containment travel through these relational channels); and story, meaning, and purpose (facts matter, but they must be held within a shared narrative — in Rhode Island, Raimondo's "Truth in Numbers" report didn't just inform, it created a common reality people could argue within, rather than argue about). The Rhode Island pension reform case. The episode walks through how Raimondo resisted the pressure to act as a technical savior and instead orchestrated a process where loss could be named, anger expressed, and responsibility shared. Public forums, clear data, and repeated engagement weren't accidental — they were elements of a holding environment intentionally designed to stretch the system's capacity. Why some systems collapse under pressure. Many organizations already have holding environments — but not ones strong enough for the challenges they're facing. When the heat exceeds the container, people disengage, scapegoat, or polarize. Exercising leadership often means strengthening the container rather than supplying answers.Holding environments vs. psychological safety. The conversation distinguishes between team-level psychological safety and the broader, more demanding work of holding environments — especially in public or cross-boundary systems where authority is diffuse and stakes are high.Quotes from This Episode"A holding environment might be a place where one's inner world is recognized, legitimized, or validated." — Tim O'Brien"She creates a space where cognitive and emotional turmoil could give way to meaning. People are upset, angry, full of rage — but something has to be done." — Tim O'Brien"They're not forging lifelong relationships, but on this particular issue they're meeting the other people who are implicated —...

Comedic impressionist Dylisms is here. He has LOUDLY become one of the funniest voices in trail running by doing spot-on (and occasionally unhinged) impressions of the sport we all take way too seriously. We get into how he makes viral running videos using nothing but his phone, his car, and pure chaos, why he waited to run an ultra before posting running content, and how trail running compares to climbing, skating, and just… exercising for a really long time. Along the way, he drops impressions of commentators, influencers, philosophers, cops, firefighters, and anyone else who's wandered into the ultrarunning cinematic universe. We also talk about award season absurdity, influencer culture, $200 shirts with holes in them, farting during ultras, and whether trail running is actually a sport or just very committed cardio. This one goes fully off the rails in the best way.If you've ever thought “we might be taking this a little too seriously,” this episode is for you.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Dylisms and Impressions05:04 The Art of Voiceovers and Equipment Setup07:56 Favorite Impressions and Character Exploration10:51 Challenges in Impersonation and Method Acting13:39 Transitioning from Climbing to Running Content16:47 Community Reception and Content Creation Process19:55 Humor in Running and Climbing Culture22:46 Reflections on Storylines in Trail Running24:43 Trail Running: A Selfish Pursuit26:56 The Evolution of Running Culture29:36 Moth Tech and Running Fashion32:22 Impersonations and Humor in the Sport36:51 The Seriousness of Ultra Running40:56 Universal Basic Gel Allowance41:45 Closing Thoughts and ReflectionsSupport our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure
How cold affects muscles, blood flow, and cardiovascular risk—plus practical ways to keep moving safely indoors and out. Biomechanist Katy Bowman and biologist Dr. Jeannette Loram explore how cold air and cold water affect muscle function, blood flow, heart rate, and blood pressure during exercise. They unpack how vasoconstriction increases cardiovascular demand, and why activities like snow shoveling and cold-water swimming carry specific risks. The episode also offers practical strategies for continuing to move safely outdoors throughout the winter months.Even when winter keeps many of us indoors, movement doesn't have to disappear. Karri Bowen-Poole of Smart Playrooms joins Katy to discuss how indoor spaces can be designed to encourage movement for kids, teens, and adults. They share ideas for simple, versatile equipment that supports strength, coordination, and play, explain why visible and aesthetically pleasing setups matter, and describe how rotating movement tools over time helps sustain interest as needs and abilities evolve.Enhanced Show Notes and Full Transcript00:14 Discussing Cold Weather and Its Impact 01:19 The Dynamic Collective 03:07 Practical Tips for Exercising in Cold Weather 03:43 The Importance of Balance, Slip Training, and Other Winter Exercise Tips 10:45 Cardiovascular System, Cold Weather, and Snow Shoveling 21:52 Cold Water Immersion and Its Effects 29:46 Listener question: Hallux Limitus and Foot Issues 36:02 Introducing Smart Playrooms LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONEDKaty's 2025 Advent featuring Venn Designs Air ChairsSmart Playrooms x Move Your DNA equipment picks Smart Playrooms setting up a teen roomSmart Playrooms Sport Court sectionCONNECT, MOVE & LEARNJoin Our Newsletter: Movement Colored GlassesFollow Katy on SubstackTry Katy's Virtual Studio Free for 7 days!MADE POSSIBLE BY OUR WONDERFUL SPONSORS:Peluva: Five-toe minimalist shoes that move like you do—take 15% off with code NUTRITIOUSMOVEMENT.Smart Playrooms: Beautiful playroom design and movement-rich equipment—save 10% on monkey bars and rock-wall items with code DNA10.Movemate: Active standing boards with smoothly articulating wooden slats. In Chapter 5 of this ongoing series, Lisa slows things down to focus on the groundwork that must come before true integration and lasting change. She explores radical acceptance, surrender, grief, and self-compassion as essential prerequisites for sustainable healing and intentional weight loss. She unpacks why integration and even fear of self-compassion demand a foundational understanding of our internal systems, challenges narratives of powerlessness around food and the body, and offers a more honest, collaborative view of agency—where tender and fierce self-compassion work together to restore connection, power, and trust.Topics Include:AuthenticityRadical Acceptance & GriefLearned HelplessnessPower & Trust[1:05] Lisa begins by emphasizing the importance of showing up imperfectly and authentically. Recording while exhausted, Lisa models imperfect, “messy action” guided by intrinsic motivation and a felt life force, showing how movement forward doesn't require perfection or certainty. She argues that filtering oneself to please others prevents genuine, resonant expression. True transformation, particularly in contexts like weight loss, starts with radical acceptance of one's current reality. [4:39] Lisa reflects on authenticity, including her frequent use of strong language. She does not apologize for it, framing it as an aligned and sincere teaching style. She references public reactions to swearing and uses Gary Vaynerchuk (Gary Vee) as an example. He is polarizing for his intense and abrasive delivery, yet he often communicates empathy, love, and compassion. Lisa highlights the paradox that style and substance can coexist, which is about balancing masculine and feminine energy in communication and leadership.[14:30] Lisa emphasizes that acceptance typically comes as the final stage of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance). If acceptance feels elusive, it may be because grief has not been allowed or processed. Grieving the gap between hope and reality enables genuine acceptance and the inner peace that follows. Lisa shares that her pivotal moment for weight loss was a raw reckoning where she moved through anger and fear to a state of acceptance, realizing she was solely responsible for her situation and the only one who could change it. [20:03] Lisa explains how during the process of acceptance, an inner child may emerge, feeling that a situation is unfair. The correct response is not dismissal but tender self-compassion: validating these feelings by acknowledging the pain and perceived unfairness. This act of consciously seeing and accepting one's own state is a form of reparenting, ensuring one is no longer alone in their suffering.[54:13] Lisa discusses the "I am powerless" principle found in 12-step programs like Overeaters Anonymous (OA), arguing it is misaligned with a healthy relationship with food, from which one cannot abstain. This belief can lead to learned helplessness. Lisa's critique targets ideology and its impact on beliefs and behavior, not individual outcomes. She explains a more effective framework is to understand that one has "total responsibility but only partial control." Not having total control doesn't mean having zero control. [40:28] Lisa explores creating a daily check-in routine to validate emotions and assess physical and emotional needs; schedule care actions as non-negotiables. She encourages listeners to map areas of power vs lack of control; practice fierce self-compassion and audit self-talk to replace disempowering beliefs.*The views of podcast guests do not necessarily reflect the views and beliefs of Lisa Schlosberg or Out of the Cave, LLC.LISA IS NOW ACCEPTING: One-on-One Clients!Purchase the OOTC book of 50 Journal PromptsLeave Questions and Feedback for Lisa via OOTC Pod Feedback Form Email Lisa: lisa@lisaschlosberg.comOut of the Cave Merch - For 10% off use code SCHLOS10Lisa's Socials: Instagram Facebook YouTube
I am thrilled to start the new year by sharing a conversation with a longtime friend and student, Keith Tomaselli. Keith, while he might deny it, is an impressive, experienced, avid runner, and is one of the founders of the Northern Liberties Run Club in Philly. When he isn't running with the club, Keith says he prefers to run solo miles over races—yet here are just some of his running highlights:- He's completed 19 Broad Street Runs - 7 half marathons- 9 full marathons (PR 3:21 at Marine Corps)- 9 ultras, including a 50-miler at Dirty German (2017).He came to my Broga class in Philly after a chance meeting me at, of all places, a South Philly brewery called Brewery ARS, and after a few pints, we sparked up a conversation about my male-specific class, and Keith decided to give it a shot. Keith is a great example of a regular guy who came to yoga extremely tight, injured, in serious pain and with zero experience practicing yoga. Now, it has been seven years since Keith has been practicing Broga and Iyengar yoga with Gabriel Sigal, and the progress he has made is nothing short of inspiring. He joins me to discuss:What his process was like becoming a yogi or I like to say, a bro-gi. Why he decided to come to an all-male yoga class. What the benefits are of practicing men's-specific yoga. How the low-key vibe of Broga where “regular” dudes take their practice seriously, but don't take themselves seriously, is a great fit for him, and how yoga informs his running and vice-versa.And how communities, regular practices and social gatherings – like Broga and his NLRC are the key for his physical, social and mental health.
