Ryan Blake talks Orioles Baseball
MLB.com prospect analyst Sam Dykstra joined Paul and Ryan this week to dig into the Orioles' farm system. In the infield, we talk about Jackson Holliday's torrid pace, Jordan Westburg's value to the team, Joey Ortiz's performance thus far, and some notes on Connor Norby and Cesar Prieto. Is Coby Mayo destined for a move to the outfield, where he might join Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad? For pitching, it might be time to move DL Hall to the bullpen and Cade Povich has been great. We also break down who has the best tools in the farm.
Ryan had the opportunity this week to chat with Orioles prospect Luis Almeyda, who was the jewel of the Orioles 2023 international class and signed for a club record $2.3 million signing bonus. We talked about his journey, what he has learned along the way, where he gets his inspiration, and more centered around baseball. Then, in an effort to get to know Luis Almeyda the person, we talked more casually about life outside of baseball, his interests, superstitions, nicknames, music, MLB The Show and much more.
Alex Fast, Orioles fan and Vice President of Pitcher List joined Paul and Ryan this week to discuss all things pitching. We touch on why Yennier Cano and Felix Bautista are so formidable at the backend of the Orioles bullpen, what roles best suit guys like Mike Baumann and Tyler Wells, what happened to Cionel Perez, the struggles and successes of young arms in the rotation, a few left-handed pitching prospects, and what tools to use when evaluating pitchers. What would Alex do over the next month if he were the O's GM? Also, is Ryan Mountcastle as unlucky as we think he is? That and more on this week's fun episode.
The Orioles are 21-10 after winning their seventh consecutive series, taking two of three from the Kansas City Royals to wrap up a stretch of games against easier opponents. Beginning Friday, they play 22 consecutive games against teams that currently have winning records, including their next nine against the first place Braves, Rays, and Pirates. As the schedule gets difficult, the pitching will have to improve if the Orioles want to keep pace. In this week's episode, Paul and Ryan break down what went right and what went wrong against the Royals and preview the month to come.
The Orioles' offense has sputtered lately, but the pitching has been unbelievably good and the O's have won six straight. Their schedule continues to be friendly for another couple weeks before a difficult May. The team will have a couple difficult decisions to make when Dillon Tate and Mychal Givens rejoin the bullpen soon, as the currently struggling members of the 'pen are out of Minor League options. We cut Brandon Hyde a break this week and enjoy what has been a fun week of baseball. Paul and Ryan are also on a mission to bring the fans together in singing along to Ryan Mountcastle's walk-up song, "Dear Maria, Count Me In" by local band All Time Low.
Ryan and Paul discuss Ryan Mountcastle's record-tying 9-RBI night, Austin Hays' hot start, and Adley Rutschman's brilliance. It hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows, though, as the pitching staff has gotten off to a rough start and a few key hitters have contributed little. Of course, it wouldn't be an episode of this podcast without a bit of complaining about Brandon Hyde's managerial decisions. The O's have some roster decisions to make now that the 15-day window for optioned pitchers to remain in AAA closes on Friday. We also tease Orioles Jeopardy!, which will take place in the off-season.

Opening Day is just hours away and we're joined by Dillon Atkinson to break down the 26-man roster and make some fun predictions for the season. Using a set of online-generated wheels to match players with statistics, we take turns setting over/under bets for the 2023 Orioles season. We also discuss Grayson Rodriguez being omitted from the MLB roster and when we should expect to see him and some other prospects who are knocking on the door. And, of course, our predictions for the Orioles record. Will they make the playoffs this year for the first time since 2016?Â
Paul and Ryan talk about some MLB The Show 2023 O's player rankings. Felix Bautista has the best overall with Adley close behind. Who isn't getting enough love? Kyle Gibson has been announced as the Orioles' Opening Day starter with Dean Kremer to follow. Grayson Rodriguez is struggling, Anthony Santander is playing first base, and Mike Baumann is officially a relief pitcher. Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad were optioned to Minor League camp. Ramon Urias was scratched but not traded. That, some whiskey, and a few cats on this week's episode.
In our first episode since the conclusion of Orioles Podcast Feud, and our first normal episode in over three months, Paul and Ryan are back to catch up on the goings-on of Spring Training. Anthony Santander and Dean Kremer are representing the Orioles in the World Baseball Classic and doing it well. The O's rotation is taking shape while the bullpen has injury concerns and a few other question marks. The offense looks great, Austin Hays might be a dude again, Ryan Mountcastle is hot, Heston Kjerstad looks like the No. 2 overall pick, Adley is Adley, and the backup first baseman competition is on fire. That and more in this week's Give That Fan a Podcast. Rest in Peace, Luis Andrés Ortiz Soriano 9.17.2002 - 3.11.2023

Not much has happened recently, but Paul and Ryan are back to talk catchers, relief pitchers, and salary figures. With the Winter Meetings coming up, we wonder what the O's might do by the end of next week. Is it really time for liftoff? On the outfielder front, DJ Stewart and Yusniel Diaz are finally gone, and 2019 draft pick Johnny Rizer retired. Maybe Austin Hays is the next to go. Also, a preview of our upcoming tournament series, Orioles Podcast Feud.
With free agency officially beginning on Thursday, Ryan and Paul break down what might and might not happen over the next few months. Brandon Hyde and Adley Rutschman are finalists for AL Manager and Rookie of the Year, respectively, with the winners being announced early next week. The Orioles made a few roster moves this week, Mike Elias is ready for liftoff, and the 40-man roster has plenty of space available. We discuss some players we would love to see the Orioles sign in a perfect world, some names that might be more realistic fits, and what those contracts might look like. Ryan also proposes a trade to the Marlins, but it's not for just Pablo Lopez.
*LATE UPLOAD* From 11/2, Ryan and Paul discuss the World Series, the long-term comparisons between Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and Manny Machado, and of course how cool it is to see Trey Mancini playing for a ring. Additionally, Ramon Urias brought home a Gold Glove, Jorge Mateo and arguably Ryan Mountcastle were snubbed as finalists, and Brandon Hyde was named American League Manager of the Year by The Sporting News. Finally, which prospects need to be added to the 40-man roster this fall to keep them protected from the Rule 5 Draft?
Our latest episode includes some discussion about the ongoing League Championship Series and the potential of a Manny Machado vs Trey Mancini World Series matchup. John Means has started throwing, the Orioles have a ton of catchers on the roster, and the weakest links from the 2022 bullpen have said goodbye. In addition, Heston Kjerstad has been excellent in the Arizona Fall League and Shohei Ohtani is unhappy in Anaheim. Finally, Ryan Mountcastle looks like a stud but some think he might be a trade candidate.
Barstool Sports Orioles writer RDT joins Paul and Ryan this week to wrap up the 2022 season and talk about expectations moving forward. We cover everything from our favorite moments, thoughts on manager Brandon Hyde, the shape of the starting rotation heading into next year, which players have earned their spots and which still need to do so, and what the offseason might look like.
We love the Orioles. We want them to win. It doesn't always feel like the manager has the same views. In this episode, we applaud the recent performance of Anthony Santander, discuss the unfortunate end to Ramon Urias' season, and then things kind of go off the rails. Wednesday night's lineup is abysmal. Kyle Stowers needs an opportunity to show that he can handle left-handed pitchers at the Major League level. Paul has been anti-Hyde for awhile, and Ryan has finally come around.
Former shortstop, coach, broadcaster, and 2011 Orioles Hall of Fame inductee Mike Bordick joins the podcast this week for a great interview. We discuss the heartbreaking 1997 ALCS, the 2000 trade deadline and Bordick's return as a free agent the following off-season, the Orioles infield defense and excess of talent, how the club might improve moving forward, his relationship with Gary Thorne, and much more. Check out our Twitter @GiveThatFanAPod for details on how you can donate to Mike's non-profit, League of Dreams.
We decided to have a little fun with this one. After looking back at the Orioles two-game sweep vs the Nationals with a little discussion about Austin Hays and Gunnar Henderson, Paul and Ryan drafted teams using only players drafted or signed as amateurs by current GM Mike Elias. Who ended up with the better lineup? Let us know in the comment section on YouTube or on Twitter @GiveThatFanAPod.
The O's dropped 3 of 4 to the Toronto Blue Jays to fall 4.5 games back of a Wild Card spot with under a month left to play. Is that deficit too large to overcome? Also, new details have emerged regarding the hiring of Mike Elias in 2018 and his relationship with the Angelos family. Paul and Ryan break down what they learned and later discuss a couple of Orioles infielders worthy of Gold Glove consideration. Spoiler alert: neither of them is Jorge Mateo. All that and much more in this week's episode.
Ryan Ripken, former Orioles prospect and son of Cal Ripken, Jr. joins this week's show to talk about his Mount Rushmore of Orioles, the organizational changes that took place when the new front office took control entering the 2019 season, what he's seen this year from some of his past teammates, how prospect development is handled, and much more. We also get to know Ripken with some rapid-fire questions. Following the interview, Paul and Ryan discuss the recent series in Houston and Monday's minor league promotions. Â Please subscribe to our YouTube channel for video of the podcast (search for Give That Fan a Podcast) and follow us on Twitter @GiveThatFanAPod.
In this week's episode, our first with video, Ryan and Paul discuss the recent call-ups of OF Kyle Stowers and LHP DL Hall as well as the (hopefully) impending debut of INF Gunnar Henderson, expectations for these players moving forward, and the learning curve that comes with a promotion from the minor leagues to the majors. In addition, SS Jorge Mateo has been one of baseball's best infielders over the past two months and may have inserted his name firmly into the Orioles' future plans. Brandon Hyde will be in consideration for American League Manager of the Year, but is he holding the Orioles back with his recent decision-making?
This week, we talk about Felix Bautista's awesome new entrance featuring the Omar Little whistle from The Wire, Paul missing a post-rain delay comeback because he has responsibilities, GM Mike Elias and Assistant GM Sig Mejdal hanging out in the seating bowl with fans, and Paul's latest article on Eutaw Street Report. We also take some questions from listeners, Ryan regrettably brings up DJ Stewart, and the Orioles tie the Rays for the third Wild Card spot right before we sign off.
The podcast is back and will now feature a regular co-host. Paul Valle III joins me for the announcement of the return of Give That Fan a Podcast. In this episode, we pay tribute to Vin Scully, discuss the Orioles trade deadline moves, recap a very fun series against the Texas Rangers, and take a look at some recent trends with the O's offense.
This one's pretty simple. I'm tired of explaining to people what this rebuild is all about, so I made a podcast about it. I touch on the player personnel moves Elias has made since 2018, everything going on in the Minor Leagues, player development, analytics, the importance of the international market, and so on. Unedited, raw, and passionate. I hope you enjoy.
In this episode, I return from another unanticipated month-long break to celebrate Opening Day by answering some questions from my Twitter followers. I break down the 26-man roster and my expectations for the guys on the team, give a few hot takes, and talk a bit about the future of the podcast and my plan to open it up to other fans. A few over/unders, my favorite for Orioles MVP, possible prospect debuts this season, and my hope for the June first-year player draft are all answered here. Spoiler alert: I don't think John Means will be the Orioles' best starting pitcher this year.
One of the voices of the Orioles, MASN play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown, joins me on the podcast this week as the O's begin their Spring Training games. We discuss his plans for this season, his relationships with MASN personalities past and present, his back-and-forth with Red Sox broadcaster Dennis Eckersley, how he prepares for his broadcasts, and much more including thoughts on the current team.
The Orioles' Director of Player Development, Matt Blood, joins this week's podcast to talk about the progress being made down on the farm. We touch on just about everything, from organizational philosophy to data and analytics to the difficulties associated with returning to a full baseball schedule. Blood drops a few names of prospects that he believes deserve some more love in an episode that will surely get you excited for the future of the O's.
The Athletic's Keith Law joins me this week to take me through the thought process that led him to ranking the much-improved Orioles farm system just 18th in baseball, much to the chagrin of many O's fans. We discuss several current Orioles prospects ranked in Law's top 20, the importance of trusting your own evaluations, the value in the international scouting market, and much more.
After the holiday break turned into a life-induced hiatus, I'm back and I brought a couple friends along for this episode. You might know Dillon Atkinson and Danny Majerowicz from their days on the O's Uncensored podcast; I know them as OK slow pitch softball players. In Episode 10, we discuss some recent transactions, dive into some prospect talk, and share our thoughts on the Orioles' activity in the international market. I also tease a few of the big guests I'll have on the show in the next month.
In the third and final episode featuring interviews with the former coaches of recent Orioles' draft picks, Stoneman Douglas High School's Todd Fitz-Gerald joins me to discuss 2020 4th round pick, Coby Mayo. We talk about the strengths and weaknesses in Coby's game and what makes him a special talent. In the preceding minutes, I reminisce on the Frederick Keys and discuss how the Orioles were impacted by last week's Rule 5 Draft.
Coach Mark Roering of Dowling Catholic High School joins this week's podcast to discuss Orioles 2020 5th round draft pick, RHP Carter Baumler. We discuss his progress from freshman to senior year of high school and what he should bring to the table in the future, as well as his recent Tommy John surgery and how that will impact him moving forward. But first, I give my thoughts on the Rule 5 draft and throw out some names I'd like to see the Orioles consider.
University of Arkansas Hitting Coach Nate Thompson joins me on the first of three December episodes centered around 2020 Orioles draft picks. Thompson coached the Orioles' first round draft pick and #3 overall prospect, Heston Kjerstad, from 2018-2020. We chat about what O's fans can expect from Kjerstad and why he has had such a successful amateur career, preceded by some of my own thoughts on recent Orioles transactions.
Barstool Sports' Eric Arditti joins this week's podcast to talk Trey Mancini, Adley Rutschman, Mo Gaba, and much more. If you're not into snakes or Breaking Bad, the O's chatter begins around the 16-minute mark. We both love Mike Elias and Jim Palmer, and we're going to walk from Baltimore to Nashville if the Orioles move there.
The Orioles fan half of Cespedes Family BBQ, Jake Mintz, joins me in the fifth episode of the show. We each provide a list of our top 20 favorite O's prospect names in the system, but first, we dive into why it's disappointing that the Winter Meetings were cancelled as an in-person event as well as the ongoing reconfiguration of the minor leagues. Reliving some of our favorite Orioles memories is always fun, too.
CBS Sports NFL Insider and co-host of Inside Access on 105.7 The Fan, Jason La Canfora, joins me for the fourth episode of the podcast. We dive into the reasons behind switching team allegiances, the importance of Minor League Baseball, and the identity of the Orioles moving forward. Spoiler alert: Jason doesn't care if you don't think he's a true O's fan.
In Episode 03, I'm joined by Olivia Witherite, who spent 8 years working in different social media and marketing roles at MASN until she moved on to a job with The Athletic in 2019. We re-lived Clinchmas 2014 and discussed working in social media and being a woman in sports. You won't want to miss Olivia's story about talking on the phone with Jim Palmer and my story about accidentally stealing an AL East Champion t-shirt.
In this episode, I fly solo and talk about myself for 45 minutes. What good is a podcast if you can't get to know the host a little bit? I take you through my life as a baseball fan and as an Orioles fan, sharing some experiences that have shaped me into who I am. I cover everything from 8-month-old Ryan watching Cal Ripken break Lou Gehrig's streak to 24-year-old Ryan moving across the country to pursue a career in baseball scouting.
