Welcome back! The Capitalist Investors discuss the Masters, earnings season, the US Dollar, and the former Twitter now known as X. The conversation focuses on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and its improvement, the Fed's hawkish stance, and the difference between deflation and disinflation. The numbers released this morning showed that year-over-year inflation was 5% compared to the expected 5.1%, and month-over-month was 0.1% instead of 0.2%. The biggest increases in inflation came from transportation, electricity, and food away from home, while the biggest decreases were in gasoline, energy, commodities, fuel, and oil. The conversation discusses the potential for an increase in inflation due to energy prices rising again, the possibility of shifts from small regional banks to bigger banks, and the loan loss reserves of banks. They also speculate that banks will blame the Federal Reserve for raising rates and causing economic instability. A historic day - for the first time ever, we have a Collective Bargaining Agreement for Minor League players. There's a lot of things to like about the agreement - $90M in total pay increases across the minors, better housing and nutrition standards - but we also have to acknowledge that losing a total of 450 jobs next year isn't great. Let's break down the deal and discuss what's in it, what's NOT in it, and what happens now. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
There's only one week left to decide. The San Francisco Giants play their final exhibition game a week from today, and the catcher position remains a great unknown. Blake Sabol has had a terrific spring, but has he done enough to stick on the SF Giants' roster and be in that Opening Day lineup in New York against Gerrit Cole? Is there really a chance Joey Bart could not make the Opening Day roster? Bart's struggles in the majors thus far have been well documented, but he is not far removed from being considered one of the game's best prospects. However, he can be optioned to the Minor Leagues, whereas Sabol has to make the team or be offered back to the Pirates. That gives Sabol an edge. Roberto Pérez seems likely to make the Giants' roster because of his experience and reputation as an excellent defender and leader. The recent WBC games are discussed. The United States has advanced to the championship game after winning big over Cuba, but the finals figure to present far more of a challenge. Both Mexico and Japan have far more talented teams than Cuba, and the US will have its hands full. Jose Altuve's injury and Trea Turner's heroics are discussed. On today's show, we're talking your questions. Someone asked if the Minor Leagues saw as many pitch clock violations as MLB Spring Training saw on Friday and Saturday (34 combined between 19 games), and we explain how it won't be a problem in the regular season. Chev asks about some under-the-radar NRIs who might make their teams, so let's talk about Nick Loftin of the Royals and Justin Dirden of the Astros. We close the show with a discussion about predictive vs reactive stats, as well as an explanation of a prospect having an "arm bar" or a "bat wrap" means, anyway. On today's Cincinnati Reds farm preview, we're looking at the plethora of infield talent in this farm system. SS Elly De La Cruz is oozing with 70 grades, but his future position might depend on the outcomes of SSs Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo. The pitching in intriguing, with some questions to be answered about LHP Brandon Williamson (why did the stuff back up?), RHP Chase Petty (can he go deeper into starts?) and RHP Connor Phillips (can the walks come down with better sequencing?) The Superlatives are highlighted by expected breakout Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who has a floor of the heir apparent to Joey Votto at 1B and a ceiling of a potential All-Star at 3B if the defense comes in. Houston Astros pitcher JP France has spent the last five years working his way through the Astros farm system. He was selected in the 14th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft out of Mississippi State University. In his last 17 appearances of the 2022 Triple-A season in Sugar Land, France logged a 2.52 ERA over 39.1 innings pitched. In November, France was placed on the Astros Major League active roster, and he hopes to make his Major League debut in 2023. His wife, Jessica McCain France, appeared on five different seasons of reality television series that aired on MTV between the years 2013 and 2016, including The Real World: Portland, The Challenge: Rivals II, The Challenge: Free Agents, The Challenge: Battle of the Exes II, and The Challenge: Rivals III. Jessica is currently pregnant with the couple's first child, and is due to give birth very soon. France visits the Jack Vita Show to discuss a wide variety of topics including, his love for hunting and the movie Mean Girls, life in the minor leagues, changes that have come to minor league baseball in recent years — some of which that are soon coming to MLB, such as the pitch clock — preparing for fatherhood, his Christian faith, his wife's reality television career, pitching, and much more. France has pitched both as a starter and a reliever. He pitched primarily out of the bullpen towards the end of last season. How does pitching as a reliever differ from pitching as a starter? France explains. He discusses his pitch mix, how to mentally turn the page from a bad outing, and how he attacks hitters. Tune in to the Jack Vita Show for an episode you will not want to miss! We featured JP's wife Jess on the Jack Vita Show last summer. Check it out here!

Play-by-play man for the Fredericksburg Nationals Eric Bach, joins Locked On Nationals dto do a deep dive into the talent that he witnessed this past season in the low-A level of the Minor Leagues. We start off by discussing some of the young pitching prospects including Jarlin Susana, the 18 year old prospect from the Dominican Republic who can throw a fastball at 103 MPH, and a mid 90's slider. Former 1st round pick Jackson Rutledge was also down with the FredNats and he saw plenty of starts down in the Carolina league, so you get to learn about his development as well. Then, we move on to the best prospect in the Nationals farm system, James Wood. He was great at basically everything, but we want to know why he was so great and what makes him so special. 2021 1st round pick Brady House also spent time in Fredericksburg before a season ending back injury, but don't be alarmed, he still has a special skill set that Nats fans should still believe in. On today's show, we've looking at two-way players in the minor leagues. On Saturday, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani threw a 101 mph pitch and had a batted ball with an 106 exit velo. Is there anybody in the minor leagues that could possibly do both of those things in the same game? We look at four possibilities: SS Masyn Winn of the St. Louis Cardinals, RHP/DH Bubba Chandler of the Pittsburgh Pirates, RHP Hunter Greene of the Cincinnati Reds. and 1B/LHP Reggie Crawford of the San Francisco Giants. Baseball America also pulled together some guys who have done both of these things, albeit at different times, and so we look at Brendan McKay, Tanner Dodson, & Javt Guerra of the Tampa Bay Rays, Michael Lorenzen, teammate of Ohtani's on the Angels, and Lucas Erecg of the Milwaukee Brewers. We close the show by talking about the likelihood of these guys - or anyone, really - accomplishing what Ohtani has and then talking about someone who maybe could have - Hall of Famer Dave Winfield.
