As Gunnar Henderson continues to be named the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, doing so one year after Adley Rutschman did the same, you have to look at the Baltimore Orioles 2019 MLB Draft and ask: is it the best draft class in franchise history?Host Connor Newcomb tries to answer that question by looking at the other players in that 2019 class like Kyle Stowers and Darell Herniaz. Then, he compares it to other great Orioles drafts in which they selected players like Brian Roberts, Matt Wieters, Cal Ripken Jr., Eddie Murray, and others. Finally, Connor looks specifically at the Orioles history of first round picks and discusses how for every Adley Rutschman and Manny Machado, there are 10 picks like Matt Hobgood and Billy Rowell.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.

That's more like it. The Yankees finally looked like the Yankees and beat up the Orioles (like they always do) in a 7-1 win. Aaron Judge hit a solo home run, Giancarlo Stanton hit a grand slam, Aaron Hicks got on base and Jordan Montgomery gave the bullpen a rest with six innings. It was the best kind of Yankees win: no frustration, disappointment and no moments of high intensity moments. A nice, easy win. After the recap, Eric Arditti of Barstool Sports joined me to talk about the state of the Orioles, when they will be good again, their last window from 2012-16, the departure of Gary Thorne from the broadcast booth and the careers of Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters.

Lucas starts with the catcher's position, meaning he's looking at Yadier Molina, Matt Wieters and Andrew Knizner. In 2018, Max Scherzer led MLB in strikeouts with 300, he led the National League in strikeouts per nine innings with 12.2, and he also led the NL in strikeout-to-walk ratio with 5.8. After reaching strikeout number 300, Scherzer gave a shout-out to catcher Matt Wieters for being the best at catching foul tips. Scherzer, however, provided no evidence for his claim, and even said that there’s no metric to demonstrate it. So was he right? Can we, in fact, measure it? More to the point, does it even matter? Stat guru Moshe Schorr was on the case, so listen up as Pesach Wolicki explains their findings in this clip from October, 2018.

Episode 442 Matt Wieters has played 11 seasons as a Major League Baseball catcher. He was selected in the first round (5th overall) in the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Two years later, he would make his MLB debut in 2009 for Baltimore against the Detroit Tigers and a day later, would have his first career MLB hit, a triple, off of pitcher Justin Verlander. During his nine seasons in Baltimore, Wieters would be named to four All-Star teams and win the Gold Glove award in 2011 and again in 2012. In 2017 and 2018, Wieters was a catcher for the Washington Nationals and in 2019, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals. On this episode of the podcast, we talk to Matt about his 2019 season with the Cardinals, playing and learning from legendary catcher Yadier Molina, how he's trusting in God's plan for the 2020 baseball season, being a light in the clubhouse and why it is important to live in the increase of Christ. Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. It's Winter Warmup weekend (even if the weather doesn't show it) and the players are in town to talk about the coming season. Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Black, @tarawellman) talk about some of the things that came out of the annual event. Matt Wieters is back in St. Louis--what does that mean for Andrew Knizner. What about the status of Yadier Molina's contract? Matt Carpenter said he'd waive his no-trade if "it made the team better"--plenty of talk about that, as you might expect. All this and much more!
Tom Ackerman joined by Cardinals manager Mike Shildt talking about another long delay, walk off win on Friday night, Goldschmidt warming up, Ozuna putting together a nice year, impressions of Wainwright this season, Matt Wieters thrown into a lot of action, Andrew Knizner getting his first MLB call, what he knows of Molina injury.
So last week Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (Red Dirt Redbird, @amedlock1) recorded on Monday and Tuesday every bit of possible news happened. The guys wade back through a week of stuff, starting with the backup catcher position becoming a competition (at least in name) with the signing of Matt Wieters. What does this mean for the bench? Does this send Drew Robinson down to the minors? Are the Cardinals going to use a full bench after all these years? They also talk about the extension for Miles Mikolas and the injury concerns surrounding Carlos Martinez. There's a week plus worth of stats and they pick out a few that probably mean nothing but pique some interest. Now, we'll see if there's more news this Tuesday.....
Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) brings you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. This week, Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Bat, @tarawellman) are excited to reunite Tara with her former UCB Radio partner Matt Whitener (Yardbarker, @CheapSeatFan). The Bryce Harper drama has come to a close. With that and the extension of Nolan Arenado, where does that put the Cardinals, who may now currently have the biggest free agent for the 2019-20 offseason? There's plenty of talk about the bullpen and rotation, spurred by the Miles Mikolas extension. The three also get a chance to talk about Matt Wieters and his surprise signing. It's a double-length Gateway but it's worth the listen!
Due to several big-time free agents still unsigned, some MLB players are talking players strike. Chip and Cern dig little into what started the 1994 MLB Strike. Chip and Cern review the Adam Wainwright clip where he is talking about a strike. Find out who is still unsigned, how much are they making and some Giants salary talk on this episode of the Chip and Cern Show. Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are the two biggest free agents that are yet to be signed and many think that owners are colluding against these big players and their contracts. Chip has some tips on how to get the strike does not look like some money grab. Chip and Cern learn up about what caused the 1994 strike and how it affected the game after that. Chip just starts reading off some stats from the 1994 strike-shortened season. Cern has a great point in saying the game of baseball isn’t ready for a strike. Attendance is down, and the game is tough to keep up with, so a strike isn’t a good one to take for the MLB. John Halpin previews the fantasy baseball catchers with Derek VanRiper (Rotowire). Players include Jonathan Lucroy, Buster Posey, Gary Sanchez, Willson Contreras, Evan Gattis, Matt Wieters, Tom Murphy, Devin Mesoraco, Cameron Rupp.
The Twins need an upgrade behind the plate, and Derek Wetmore and Phil Mackey disagree on how they should go about solving that problem. On this episode of the Touch 'Em All podcast, Wetmore suggests that the top free agent catcher on the market is Wilson Ramos. (Matt Wieters is second on his list.) Mackey says he could see the Twins going in a different route, and forgoing the free agent pool altogether. They also talk about Jason Castro, Mitch Garver, John Ryan Murphy, and the Matt Capps trade that was a big failure and hurt the franchise for years. Learn more about your ad choices.
