Tiffany Elementary School, Dave Gonzalez of Eastlake High School, Manny Crespo of the Florida Marlins, and Bruce Bochy of the San Diego Padres as profound teachers and coaches along his personal and athletic journey.
With 10 Gold Gloves and 434 career homers, Andruw Jones is regarded as one of the top centerfielders of all time, and the guys have a great conversation with him on this episode. In addition, Andrew shares some fun stories, talking about hitting two World Series home runs at 19 years old, and which Braves HoF pitcher he didn't enjoy playing behind. Most importantly, Andruw shares what it was like to grow up playing baseball in Curacao, how many games he played in his youth, and how he achieved his dream of playing professional baseball. He also contrasts his journey with the current youth sports culture in America, based on what he saw through his son's recent youth sports journey in Atlanta as he became the #2 overall pick in the MLB draft.

2025 BBWAA HOF Ballot Happy New Year! It's once again time to talk about the Hall of Fame, this time the writers' ballot. There are plenty of worthy candidates returning to the ballot, and two standout first year candidates to watch. Japanese icon Ichiro Suzuki is a lock for induction this year. Although he didn't debut until he was 27, the spry savant amassed over 3,000 hits, 1,400 runs, 10 All-Stars and Gold Gloves, not to mention two batting titles, a Rookie of the Year, and a MVP. He also holds the single season hit record, with 262 in the 2004 season. Although not the first Japanese player in MLB, his smashing success paved the way for other Japanese stars such as Hideki Matsui, Yu Darvish, and Shohei Ohtani. The only question about Ichiro is whether or not he'll be unanimous. Don't sleep on ace lefty C.C. Sabathia's chances on his debut ballot. As one of just three left handed pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts (Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson the other two), Sabathia was the definition of a workhorse. Add in 250 wins, a Cy Young, a World Series, and an ALCS MVP, and you've got a Hall of Famer, especially in this era. Among the other first-year candidates, there are a few who could survive the 5% threshold to remain on ballot for another year. Félix Hernández was one of the most dominant starters in baseball from 2007 - 2015, but that might not be enough for the writers. Dustin Pedroia and Ian Kinsler were both excellent second basemen that frankly lack the longevity needed for enshrinement, but are certainly worthy cases to discuss, particularly on the same ballot as sabermetric darling Chase Utley. Russell Martin and Brian McCann come up short in the traditional counting stats that writers demand from catchers, but their advanced framing metrics put them in similar ranks as Joe Mauer, Buster Posey, and Yadier Molina. Of the returning candidates, Billy Wagner came up just short last year (73.8%), and he will need a push to get over in his final year on the ballot. In his second to last year, Andruw Jones appears to be stalling around 60% of the vote, not far off from induction, but not close enough to be confident he'll make it this year or the next. Carlos Beltrán and Chase Utley appear to be on track for induction in a few years time, though they'll need to continue their growth. AROD, ManRam, and Andy Pettitte would be in the Hall if not for PEDs, and they're not getting in anytime soon. How many will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker for a July celebration? Find out January 21st when the results are announced. Kansas City Royals legend Alex Gordon joins Eric Hosmer & Mike Moustakas in the 1st edition of Diggin' At Home!Gordo takes us back to his baseball roots in Nebraska, playing for the Cornhuskers, and becoming the 2nd overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft. He shares what it was like coming up as a young player in the Royals organization and overcoming hard times early in his career. Gordo also takes us behind scenes of the conversations he had with Dayton Moore early on about transitioning from 3rd base to the outfield, a move that would lead to him winning 8x Gold Gloves, and at the time made room for a young Moose to fill that spot. The guys discuss the current state of the Royals and why the future is so bright with a guy like Bobby Witt Jr. in the clubhouse. As an assistant coach, Gordo breaks down what he saw from this past season and why he's excited about what's to come in KC. Of course the guys had to take a trip down memory and talk about the glory days in Kansas City. Gordo delivers a break down of his Game 7 hit that he almost made it home on - should he have been sent home? He also gives us a comprehensive break down of his iconic home run against Jeurys Familia. Gordo shares how studying Familia's quick pitch to Salvador Perez changed his approach at the plate, leading to the game-tying home run that sent Kauffman Stadium into a frenzy. From his MLB debut against Curt Schilling to meeting George Brett as a rookie, Gordo provides an amazing look at his remarkable MLB journey.-----------------GuestAlex Gordon / @alex.gordon.4HostsEric Hosmer / @hosmer305Mike Moustakas / @moosetacos8Interact with the Diggin' Deep Crew on:Instagram / Facebook / Twitter / TikTokAdvertising & Partnership inquiries: diggindeep@moonballmedia.coma MoonBall Media Podcast
Buster Posey and the Giants hired a general manager! Zack Minasian (his brother is also the GM of the Angles, btw) has spent six years with the Giants and prior to that, was with the Brewers organization for 15 years. He grew up in the Rangers' clubhouse, as his dad was a clubhouse attendant. In his teens, Zack realized that he wasn't going to make it as baseball player and set his sights on the front office. Well, he's arrived. Randy Winn was also named VP of player development. We'll see if positions come up for JT Snow and Rich Aurilia. Patrick Bailey and Matt Chapman won Gold Gloves. It's Bailey's first, Chapman's fifth, and it's the first time the Giants have had two or more Gold Glove winners since Crawford, Panik, and Posey in 2016. Notice how we didn't mention the Dodgers? Wait, what?www.torturecast.com@torturecast
Curt and JR are back to revisit the many things that have happened in the offseason thus far, from a Silver Slugger to Gold Gloves to a bevy of roster moves that included the surprising departure of Colin Rea. Is there any lingering possibility that Willy Adames returns? How are the Brewers supposed to trade Devin Williams with an oversaturated free-agent market for relievers, and how are they supposed to address third base with an underabundance of players on the free-agent market at that spot? Where is this team going to improve? Is Roki Sasaki really a possibility? Then, a longer look at the minor league names to know (1:04:00), both for 2025 and beyond. What should we know about Brock Wilken, Cooper Pratt, Luis Lara, Jesus Made and more? Which player has the chance to make the biggest impact next year?
Send us a textJapanese sensation 23-year-old Roki Sasaki wants to play #MLB. He finally got Chibu to allow him to have that opportunity. We didn't discuss Shohei Ohtani's surgery but he'll be ready for Opening Day. We discussed the Gold Glove winners who were announced this week. The Classic Baseball committee put out their ballot this year to be voted on by 16 yet unnamed voters. Dick Allen and the late Luis Tiant are our favorites. This week we do a deep character profile bio on the Wizard, Osborne Earl Smith. Ozzie Smith was one of the few players who could beat you with just his glove, and phenomenal defensive feats. The 15 time All Star, winner of 13 consecutive Gold Gloves, is widely regarded as the greatest defensive shortstop ever, if not the greatest defender at any position, in the history of the game. From being overlooked because of his diminutive stature, to owning the shortstop stage at Busch Stadium, the Wizard's climb to baseball immortality, is a story of resillence and perseverance. #OzzieSmith #SanDiegoPadres #RayKroc #WhiteyHerzog #GaryTempleton #JackBuck #TomNiedenfuer #JeffBurroughs #LockeHighSchool #EddieMurray #CalStatePoly

Jim Kaat pitched in the big leagues for 25 seasons, debuting in 1959 and hanging 'em up in 1983. He holds the distinction of the longest time in between World Series appearances first appearing in the Fall Classic in 1965 when his Twins took on the Dodgers with Kaat matching up 3 times against Sandy Koufax. 17 years later, as a member of the Cardinals, Jim was on the winning side of things as St. Louis defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in 1982. The 24 years it took for Kaat to finally win a championship is a record for all professional team sports and a testament to his longevity and determination... That longevity and determination along with 283 wins helped Jim get inducted into the Hall of Fame. That and one baseball glove that he used for most of his career. That's right, Jim played for 25 years in the Major Leagues and won 16 Gold Gloves all with the same piece of leather. If it works, it works. And for Kaat, it worked. And when his playing days were over... he found new work... as an Emmy-Award winning baseball analyst... a job he held for close to 40 years! What was it like to go up against Koufax in his prime? Why are pitchers being injured at such an alarming rate? Why is his friend of 60+ years, Tommy John, not in Cooperstown and what was it like to finally become a World Series champion in his 24th season in the Big Leagues? Kaat played for 1/4 of a century and he has the stories to prove it. An interesting chat with an interesting man on the Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Frank White won 8 Gold Gloves, went to 5 All-Star games, and helped lead the Royals to the '85 World Series title over the course of his 18 year career. He and George Brett formed one of the most enduring partnerships in MLB history. He is also the most thoroughly 'Kansas City-guy' you will ever come across. He was raised there, went to HS there, played exclusively for the Royals for 2 decades before working for the team in a number of capacities, and then has been in local politics for the last decade as County Executive and a member of the legislature. In the latest episode of the Hall of Famer That Wasnt series, Kenny The Sports Guy Podcast dives into the surprising omission of baseball legend Dave Parker, nicknamed "The Cobra," from the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I explore his impressive career and unpack the reasons some argue for and against his enshrinement. Here's what I'll cover: The Cobra's Strike: A look at Parker's impressive stats: a high batting average, power hitting with hundreds of home runs, and a long career with thousands of hits. I'll also discuss his defensive prowess with multiple Gold Gloves. The Sting of Controversy: I'll address the shadows cast by Parker's connection to the Pittsburgh drug trials of the 1980s and how it might have impacted voters. A Peak Performer?: I'll discuss Parker's phenomenal peak years, including his MVP season, but also explore the decline in his later career and how that factors into Hall of Fame considerations. More Than Stats: This episode goes beyond numbers to explore Parker's impact on the game. I'll talk about his role in the Pittsburgh Pirates' success and his overall legacy. Is the Hall Still Striking Out?: I'll discuss the voting process and why Parker hasn't garnered enough support from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. I'll also explore the possibility of him being considered by the Modern Baseball Era committee.
