On November 6, 2023, Stephen Vogt was named the 45th manager of the Cleveland Guardians. He joined the club just two years after finishing his major league career and stepping into the seemingly unfillable shoes of Terry Francona. At the start, Vogt inherited the youngest roster in the MLB, and saw the loss of star pitcher Shane Bieber in the first week due to an elbow injury. By all accounts, the odds were stacked against him.rnrnBut what came next ended up being one of the Guardians best seasons in history, backed by the best bullpen in the majors, and an American League Central Division title for Cleveland. And dare we say it-just three wins shy of a World Series appearance.rnrnBut that wasn't enough. In November 2024, Vogt was named the 2024 American League Manager of the Year-the fifth youngest manager to win the award after receiving a resounding 27 of the 30 first place votes. He is the fastest person to go from player to Manager of the Year in the award's history. His success is credited to many things, but in particular, Vogt brings a new style of leadership and organizational culture that centers on humility, humor, and even passing the "aux cord."

The former Brooklyn spitballer will be replacing Casey Stengel, who was fired last month during the World Series after compiling a 208-251 (.453) record during his four-year tenure. The Dodgers for a short period will be paying 3 managers, Max Carey, Grimes and Stengel. Grimes will last two seasons and win only 131 games and lose 171.On November 5, 1997 – In an unprecedented move, Davey Johnson resigns the same day he is named American League Manager of the Year. Despite the fact that Johnson ended the Baltimore Orioles' 13-year playoff drought in 1996 and led the Orioles to the league's best record in 1997 (98-64), a dispute over $10,500 in fines to second baseman Roberto Alomar ends Johnson's reign in Baltimore. Johnson directed the fines to be paid to a charity. Orioles owner Peter Angelos is upset with the way the matter is handled and Johnson resigns.On November 5, 2010 — One of the approximately 60 rare T206 Honus Wagner baseball cards, auctioned off by the Baltimore-based School Sisters of Notre Dame, is acquired by a sporting card store owner Doug Walton, who pays $262,000 for the treasured piece of memorabilia. The School Sisters of Notre Dame plan to use the windfall from the sale of the valuable card of the Pirates' third baseman to benefit ministries for the poor in 35 countries.Born November 5, Selected by the Toronto Blue Jays as the second player overall in the 1978 free agent draft, Lloyd Moseby was rushed to the majors by the talent-hungry Blue Jays faster than the development of his potential would have ordinarily warranted. A talented center fielder, he combined with Jesse Barfield and George Bell to form what was sometimes called the best outfield in baseball in the late 1980s.In 1983 Moseby became the first Blue Jay to score 100 runs in a season, and tied teammate Damaso Garcia for a team-record (and league-leading) 21-game hitting streak. The following season, he tied with teammate Dave Collins for the AL lead in triples, and was a consistent run-producer and stolen base threat for the mid-80s Jays. By the end of the decade, the “best outfield” was being dismantled. Barfield was traded to the Yankees, and emerging prospect Junior Felix was gradually pushing Moseby out of center. When Moseby signed with the Detroit Tigers in December 1989, he left Toronto as the Blue Jays' career leader in games, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, extra-base hits, stolen bases, strikeouts, being hit by the pitch, and sacrifice flies.

Joe Torre was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY on July 27, 2014 and the New York Yankees retired his Number 6 at a ceremony at Yankee Stadium the following month. Joe is currently a consultant to Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred. Prior to his current role, he served as the Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing several areas that included Major League Operations, On-Field Operations, On-Field Discipline and Umpiring. He served as the Office of the Commissioner's primary liaison to the general managers and field managers of the 30 Major League Clubs regarding all baseball and on-field matters. Bobby Valentine was born and raised in Stamford, the son of Joseph and Grace. Bobby attended Ryle Elementary, Cloonan Middle School, and Rippowam High School, where he was elected student body president and became the only three-time All-State football player in Connecticut history. Bobby received a scholarship to the University of Southern California and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1968. After 10 seasons as a professional baseball player, Bobby made his major league managerial debut in 1985 with the Texas Rangers. He was the American League Manager of the Year in 1986 and went onto become the winningest manager in Rangers history. Bobby began managing the New York Mets in 1996 and led the team to back-to-back postseasons, including a 2000 World Series appearance. He also won the 2005 Japan Series Championship while managing the Chiba Lotte Marines. Moderator Tom Verducci is an analyst and reporter for FOX Sports' Major League Baseball coverage. Fuller, of Weekapaug, passed away in Florida.  Born in New London, Ed graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy in New Jersey and spent many summers in Weekapaug where he met the love of his life, Ellie. He graduated from the University of CT, a ROTC member, and Alpha Sigma Phi. After graduation, he married Ellie at St. Clare's Church of Misquamicut and was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in the US Army. Ed served his country for 20 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served two tours of duty in Viet Nam and received his Combat Infantry Badge. Among many honors and medals, Edwin was the recipient of a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and was awarded the Viet Nam Service Medal. During his military career, he was a Professor of Military Science at Sienna College and an ROTC instructor at Canisius College. Ed received his graduate degree at Niagara College. He also attended the Commanding General Staff School in Fort Leavenworth. Upon retirement from the military, he worked for General Electric in Schenectady, NY as a project Manager with turbine engines. He was an avid sailor at the Saratoga Sailing Club where he and Ellie spent many weekends sailing and where Ed was also Commodore. During the winter months, they enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing with their daughters. Ed leaves behind his daughters and his grandchildren. Cardinals’ broadcaster John Rooney joins co-hosts Chris Hrabe and Mike Claiborne for the duration of the first hour of tonight’s program. The longtime radio and television announcer discusses his outlook on the Central division, the organization’s use of its young prospects, the Hall of Fame election of former catcher Ted Simmons and much more. Rooney also previews the upcoming 62nd annual St. Louis Baseball Writers’ Dinner on Sunday, January 19th. In hour two, hear from three-time American League Manager of the Year Buck Showalter who discusses his involvement in the I-70 Baseball Coaches Clinic and what it takes to make a good manager in the modern era. Jin Rosenhaus is the radio voice of the Cleveland Indians He is also the host of Indians Warm Up and Tribe Talk on WTAM.[1] He joined the Indians in 2007 after spending 11 years as the play-by-play voice of the AAA Buffalo Bisons. Initially serving as the engineer/producer of the radio broadcast, in 2010 he eventually added the role of broadcaster to his responsibilities.[2] In 2012, he became Tom Hamilton's full-time partner following the retirement of Mike Hegan. With the Bisons, he called an impressive 1,628 games (just 44 contests shy of the all-time record for most in team history held by our good friend Pete Weber). He is the only broadcaster to call three Bisons championships (1997, 1998, 2004). Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex says why John Farrell didn't deserve to win the American League Manager of the Year award. Though the Red Sox greatly surpassed expectations last season, Terry Francona did more with less. Farrell had a championship caliber core at his disposal, and one of the game's highest payrolls. The only positional player on the Indians who would've started on the Red Sox is Carlos Santana. Alex also talks about the latest rumors surrounding the Red Sox's four major free agents, and the likelihood that Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli, Stephen Drew and Jarrod Saltalamacchia return. The Red Sox should continue to negotiate with all four players, but aren't beholden to any of them. Ben Cherington has an immense amount of flexibility, and now it's all about how uses it. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex expresses his displeasure at the fact that Miguel Cabrera ousted Mike Trout in MVP balloting for the second consecutive year. It's amazing that Trout has become the face of the sabermetric movement, especially because of his diverse skill set. Trout has been the best player in baseball over the past two years by any statistical measure. The best player should also be the most valuable player, because, well ... he's the best. The better a player is, the more valuable he is to his team. The Braves are moving to Cobb County in 2017, and taxpayers are financing a new $450 million stadium. It's a joke that owners continue to swindle taxpayers into financing stadiums for them. Cobb County is more than $80 million over its education budget, and can't produce enough revenue to keep the schools open for a full academic year.
