Our good friend Rob Caplan from Topper Jewelers joins the show today to talk about their brand new Oris Divers Sixty Five Topper Maxi Edition. In this episode we have a great chat with Vortic Watches co-founder R.T. Custer. Vortic launched its very first watch back in 2014 on Kickstarter, and despite dealing with a five year lawsuit which the guys just recently won, they've literally gone from strength to strength in the last six years. Not only are they bringing classic American pocket watch movements back to life in a very cool looking wrist watch format, but they also have an amazing program that raises money for our country's military veterans. Well this one's been in the making for quite awhile now folks, and after a false start a couple of weeks ago due to our horrific rural Internet service we were finally able to get on the phone with Beth Haddad and V.J. Geronimo of Oris North America. Beth is the West Coast Regional Sales Manager and V.J. is the North American CEO for the brand. Ranch Racer had the privilege of meeting Beth a couple of years ago when she joined our local Sacramento RedBar group for one of our GTGs to show us their latest offerings. VJ then came out with Beth a few months ago to again treat the group to some amazing watches from the brand. Finally, Beth helped RR surprise PG last week with an Oris Aquis Date 36mm! We had a great time speaking with Beth and VJ. We talked about the history of the brand and all of the incredible charitable work that Oris is known for, and they also announced some very exciting things coming up just around the corner! In this episode we welcome to the show Raphael and Markus from Formex Watches. While not exactly a new brand, Formex has flown somewhat under the radar since its founding in the late nineties. Under new leadership for the last several years the Swiss brand, known for its suspended case design and augmented reality app, is experiencing a resurgence with its new Essence collection. Took a bit of a break again but the dynamic duo are back once again. SWC was actually formed more than 10 years ago and got their start producing watches for the US Military. Over the years Steve has also done design and production consulting for other well known brands, which followed a career in Switzerland with little company called the Swatch Group. It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt! Actually, nobody got hurt in our Vegas adventure to COUTUREtime 2018, and we met with some great brands. We also had some fun shopping on our “day off”, and might have bought a couple of new pieces that you’ll hear about in the wrist check. During said wrist checks there may be some brand boutique bashing. Well, not bashing per se, but most definitely an important lesson to be learned. In this episode: Perpetual Girl wears an evening gown...and...Ranch Racer reads some instructions! This is an epic episode as it marks the team’s final recording before posting the first three episodes on iTunes, making the Love ‘N Watches Podcast official. Exciting stuff! Recording quality should be noticeably better from here on out. Wrist Checks: Double R is sporting a recently acquired Seals Watch Co. Model A that he borrowed and didn’t return to another fellow watch geek. Michael Seals is a local watchmaker in the Northern California Foothills who takes his inspiration from military tanks. PG is wearing a mid-2000s era Bulova ladies quartz that Double R bought for her after a few years of marriage. The topic for this episode focuses on revealing just a small part of the dynamic duo’s watch collection. PG actually had a plan, discussing several of her Bulova pieces, both vintage and modern. Double R did no planning whatsoever, basically grabbing three completely random watches from his collections and talking about them in no particular order. PG - 1, Double R - 0. PG kicks things off with her very well preserved Bulova Miss America from the Art Deco period of American history, complete with an original box that the watch would have been delivered in back in the day. Double R then chimes in with his hideously gigantic Bulova Precisionist - not a watch that he wears all that often anymore - with its high frequency 262kHz quartz movement and very cool chronograph complication, a Christmas gift from PG. Then it’s back to PG with her Bulova blue dial Ladies Diamond Collection watch, a Christmas gift from Double R, who then waxes poetic about his Detroit Watch Co. 1701 Power Reserve. PG wraps up with another vintage Bulova that she actually bought for Double R and then stole back. Double R finishes off with his newly acquired Omega Speedmaster “Sapphire Sandwich”. Ranch Racer and Perpetual Girl kick off Episode #2 with PG talking about the fact that she feels the need to clean off the ranch manure, take a shower, and make herself “presentable” while recording a Podcast. Double R is TOTALLY cool with that! Remember, a shower a week whether you need it or not. ;-) Then the duo jump into the wrist checks. First up we have PG who started the day out with one of her Citizen solar powered watches, but then switched to her Omega Speedmaster 38 to, believe it or not, time her livestock! Double R is sporting his Seiko SRP779 Pepsi bezel “Turtle” that PG got him for his birthday. He loves the watch and its lume so much that it ended up being his go-to watch for bedtime. On to the topic at hand. PG kicks things off by discussing how she feels that in many cases today, women get less value for their dollar in the watch market. The issue possibly stems from the fact that there are fewer women watch wearers who know, or frankly care, what’s inside the watch. Double R then gives a very high level overview of the difference between mechanical and quartz watches. The pair hit on the “Quartz Crisis” of the 70s and 80s, and then the rebirth of the mechanical watch industry. Quartz movements tend to be cheaper plastic affairs, while even the most basic mechanical movement is a thing of beauty in comparison. Quartz has accuracy and minimal servicing needs going for it though. The meat of the discussion focuses on the industry’s lack of affordable mechanical watches for women. A $4,000 stainless steel Cartier is pretty ridiculous. Where’s the value? Meanwhile brands like Oris, Tudor, and Breitling seem to be getting it and coming out with affordable, smaller mechanical offerings that most certainly will appeal to serious female collectors.
