Waarom verzamelen we eigenlijk?

VJ Geronimo is a previous podcast guest on this show, and as you may know, Oris and STANDARD H have partnered in several ways throughout the years. We've co-hosted an event for Red Bar Raleigh, we've both participated in the Holiday event at Topper Jewelers, and both companies are huge fans of baseball. Though STANDARD H can't afford a billboard in Yankee Stadium, it's something that would be a bit of a dream, and thus, I get to somewhat live vicariously through VJ and his team‘s efforts. What I love about Oris is their dedicated nature of being inclusive, their ethical approach to business, and certainly their assortment offering true value.VJ and I start the conversation discussing family, and how father/daughter dynamics change over time, and then we move onto Watches & Wonders: the Oris booth and their approach to the show. Then, VJ walks us through the new releases and the history of a very special watch, the Star Edition. All of this and more with my very good friend, and someone I hold in the highest regard, VJ Geronimo. You can listen to the audio-only above or watch our conversation below! This week on The Business of Watches, we're in Hölstein, Switzerland, near Basel, at the peach-rose colored headquarters of Oris to talk to Rolf Studer, the brand's Chief Executive Officer. One of the 50 largest Swiss brands by sales, Oris is a true independent, making mechanical watches at fair prices, conveying the brand's unique spirit.  Its history dates back to 1904, with boom times in the 1960s that were kick-started by the tireless legal and lobbying work of Dr. Rolf Portmann, an Oris executive (and honorary chairman today), whose efforts led to overturning the Swiss Watch Statute in 1966 that had prevented Oris and many other brands from using Swiss lever escapements in their watch movements. Some 60 years later, Oris is marking that milestone with its Star Edition, an updated version of the Star, the first Oris watch to use a Swiss lever escapement after the law was changed. Portmann and Ulrich Herzog (now the Chairman) went on to lead a management buyout of Oris in 1982, which solidified the company's position as an independent brand. Studer, who has been co-CEO since 2016 and was appointed CEO last month, discusses Oris' positioning and strategy in the current market, where the strong Swiss franc is challenging it and fellow watchmakers. Oris has responded with models that not only offer value to customers but also draw on its storied history and the unique community culture it has fostered. Studer makes the case for why crafted mechanical objects like a Swiss-made watch can deliver the satisfaction and joy that come only from a considered, well-made product, and for how Oris remains committed to making watches and operating in ways that continually express its considered, deeply held values. But first, Hodinkee editor TanTan Wang pops in to talk about Oris and give a brief debrief from Watches and Wonders, noting some of the highlights from the industry's biggest and most important gathering, including offerings from Chopard and Cartier.  Show Notes  1:45 Photo Report The Sights, Watches, And Style Of Watches & Wonders 2026  2:14 Business News: Watches And Wonders Attendance Climbs Despite Geo-Politics And Economic Challenges As Brands Make Case For Value  2:30 Cartier Celebrates 10 Editions of Privé With Six New Editions  3:42 Introducing: The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points  3:49 Hands-On: The Chopard L.U.C 1860 In Aeruse Blue  4:43 Introducing: Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Chronograph Mystérieux 'Mineral Blue' Reinvents The Central-Counter Chronograph  7:50 Introducing: Oris Star Edition Celebrates A Turning Point In The Brand's History  11:38 Introducing: The Oris Artelier Complication, A Dress Watch Redesigned For A New Generation  16:04 In-Depth: A Visit to Hölstein, The City That Oris Built   19:31 Waldenburg, Switzerland (Wikipedia)  22:19 The Swiss Watch Statute And Dr. Ralph Portmann (Oris)  34:18 Oris and independence with the Bullseye Big Crown Pointer Date(Instagram)   37:11 Prices, Volumes, And Passion: The Business Of Watches In 2025 And What To Expect In 2026  37:40 Oris Calibre 400  39:08 Swiss franc x USD   40:15 The Swiss - Artisans of Time (Swiss Confederation)  42:42 ASUAG (Wikipedia)  43:04 Oris History including ownership changes (Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry)  55:49 The Oris Yangtze Jiangtun Limited Edition

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is back in the hosting seat and joined by Ariel, Ripley, and David for a typical wide ranging conversation that moves from Japanese watch culture to retail power plays, with only a mild amount of chaos along the way. Ariel shares highlights from his recent trip to Tokyo, including how Seiko, Grand Seiko, Citizen, and Casio are presented at home, why Seiko currently wins the prettiest display contest, and what it feels like to stand in front of an entire rainbow of Mount Iwate dials. The team then dives into a deep discussion about Rolex and the growing pressure placed on authorized dealers, from costly boutique remodels to brand controlled retail experiences, sparking a lively debate about independence, real estate strategy, and who really benefits when luxury retail gets a facelift. From there, the episode rolls straight into Hit Miss Maybe, covering a new pilot inspired release from Oris, a lightweight Zagato concept from Chopard, and a technical deep dive into a high end Ferdinand Berthoud piece, complete with chain drives, constant force mechanisms, and strong opinions about skeletonization. The Brand Wheel of Death makes its long awaited return, putting Tudor and Tissot back in the spotlight, while Czapek quietly exists. Along the way, the crew debates value, design direction, and whether some brands need a 50 year timeout. On this week's episode of The Business of Watches, we head to Nidau, Switzerland, where we sit down with Ben Küffer, the young Chief Executive Officer of family-owned watch brand Norqain. It's a frank discussion of the challenges of starting a brand and creating a signature watch–the Norqain Wild One–at a time when the industry is crowded with competitors, and it's tough to stand out. We focus on Norqain's unique strategy of recruiting former and current professional athletes as not only brand representatives, but also investors and executives. The big news is Norqain's deal to be the official luxury timepiece of the National Hockey League, an agreement guided by former NHLer and Norqain co-founder Mark Streit with some help from superstar and company investor Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. We also discuss the surprise success of Norqain's 'Enjoy Life' Freedom 60 chronograph that struck a chord with consumers with its ice cream-themed colors and endorsement by Mark Wahlberg to become the brand's top-selling watch. Despite that success, and perhaps in a bid to play the scarcity card, Norqain now says it plans to discontinue the model, at least for now. But first, we're joined by TanTan Wang, who is back from Colorado, and some quality time with Oris's new Big Crown Pointer Date 'Bullseye.' We also talk about the recent headlines in the watch world, including the proposed sale of Richemont's Baume & Mercier to Italy's Damiani Group, as well as Omega's very commercial 300M diver, which it is launching for the Milano Cortina Winter Games. Show Notes 1:57 Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bullseye 3:15 TanTan's essay and the fight against watch snobbery 3:47 Richemont Sells Baume & Mercier 5:43 Omega Releases A White Ceramic Seamaster 300M For Milano Cortina 2026 9:40 Norqain 10:22 Mark Streit 11:10 Norqain Scores Multi-Year Sponsorship Deal With NHL Aimed At Vaulting Swiss Brands To The Big Leagues 12:03 Sidney Crosby Partners With Watch Company Founded By Former NHLers (ESPN) 18:00 Talking Watches With Jean-Claude Biver 19:55 Norqain Wild One 20:25 BIWI SA 26:00 Hands-On with the Norqain Wild One (Fratello) 30:40 Hands-On With the Norqain Freedom 60 40mm Enjoy Life (Fratello) 35:55 Norqain Independence Skeleton Chrono 42mm 37:31 Swiss watch export statistics 39:44 Swiss watch industry employment 45:00 Stan Wawrinka 51:30 Norqain world and values

With Ariel off on a mysterious, possibly horological, possibly diplomatic mission somewhere in Germany, Rick, David, and Ripley take the wheel. They immediately veer into Hungarian folk heroes, goose-based revenge myths, and the comforting knowledge that Disney will eventually monetize all of it. From there, the clappage gives way to Oris' Year of the Horse watch and the genuinely baffling decision to celebrate an animal by wearing part of it. That choice sparks a long, ethically curious spiral involving cordovan straps, zodiac logic, pet straps, April Fool's trauma, and whether anyone thought to ask a horse enthusiast first. From there, the episode turns into an unintentional audit of the modern watch internet. SevenFriday, U-Boat, and Swatch demonstrate that search functions are optional, vowels are negotiable, and websites may simply choose not to work. Along the way, the group revisits the watches they “missed” in 2025, including aggressively plastic divers, kindergarten crayon designs, watches that tick loudly enough to inspire resonance experiments, collabs that feel more like t-shirts than timepieces, and diamond-studded bison fantasies that send at least one host mentally relocating to Texas. The chaos culminates in a brutally honest round of the Picker Wheel of Death. Chronoswiss, Tutima, and Jaeger-LeCoultre face resurrection, mercy, or total erasure from the timeline as the debate somehow becomes philosophical, existential, and deeply online. It ultimately proves, once again, that this is, in fact, a watch podcast, even if it refuses to behave like one.To check out the ABTW Shop where you can see our products inspired by our love of Horology:- Shop ABTW - https://store.ablogtowatch.com/To keep updated with everything Superlative, aBlogtoWatch Weekly, and aBlogtoWatch, check us out on:- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ablogtowatch/- Website - https://www.ablogtowatch.com/- Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aBlogtoWatch If you enjoy the show please Subscribe, Rate, and Review!

The Author Events Series presents Harmonia Rosales | Chronicles of Ori: An African Epic  In Conversation with Imani Roach In Chronicles of Ori, her debut book, Harmonia Rosales retells the African myths she has long treasured, crafting an enthralling epic that spans the birth of the universe to the modern world of colonialism and resistance. She writes of the powerful, temperamental deities called the Orishas; of the founding of Yorubaland by the shrewd leader Oduduwa; of the young heroine Eve, born in a time of violence and despair, who would help her people regain their past splendor; and of shimmering serpents and monstrous shadows who stalk the lands of mortals. At the center of these linked tales is the bond, sometimes fraying, between the Orishas and the humans who worship them. It was the Orishas who made humans, and who gave them their most precious resource: their Oris, or destinies. Vividly brought to life by Rosales's artwork, Chronicles of Ori will enlighten and delight readers for years to come. Harmonia Rosales is an American artist from Chicago whose work depicts and honors African myths and the diaspora. She lives in Los Angeles, California. Imani Roach is the inaugural director of the Brind Center for African and African Diasporic Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There she is planning the first permanent gallery devoted to the arts of Africa and its diaspora in the PMA's 150-year history, set to open Fall, 2026. In this role she also works with colleagues across the institution on educational, curatorial and conservation initiatives that center Black art. She was previously Assistant Curator for the Arts of Africa at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the renovation and reinstallation of the Michael C. Rockefeller wing's African collection. A scholar of African Modernism and a proud Philadelphia resident since 2012, she has designed and led courses on the arts of Africa at Haverford College, the University of Pennsylvania, University of the Arts, Moore College of Art and Design and elsewhere. She has also worked in the arts journalism space, both as a senior editor at Guernica Magazine and as the first Managing editor of Artblog. Beyond her career as an art historian, she is also a regularly gigging vocalist and a new mom.  Because you love Author Events, please make a donation when you register for this event to ensure that this series continues to inspire Philadelphians. This week on the Worn & Wound podcast, we're previewing the upcoming Windup Watch Fair in Chicago. Blake Malin hosts and is joined by Kyle Snarr and Nelly Calhoun to discuss all things Windup as we get ready to continue the Fair's ten year anniversary celebration with our biggest and best shows yet. This year's show features over 40 exhibiting brands, including old favorites and some brands making their Windup debut. Doxa, Celeste, Watch Craft, and Tudor are among the brands you'll see at Windup for the first time in Chicago when the show opens on Friday, and the team highlights what you can expect from them along with our lead sponsors: Casio, Atelier Wen, Oris, Citizen, and Christopher Ward. Also covered in this episode are some of the brands and members of the local Chicago watch community that will be at the show, including Oak & Oscar and Hampden. And as always, there's a ton of additional programming at Windup – there will be panels and live podcasts throughout the weekend. Of course, all of this programming (and show itself) is free and open to the public. The Windup Watch Fair begins on Friday July 11 and runs through Sunday July 13. We'll be at Venue West in Chicago, located at 221 N Paulina Street.
