Helping working women who are new mothers become exactly the working mothers they most want to be.
Join me for the conclusion of my podcast series on how I have actively and intentionally mothered myself using my own set of tools and practices during my ongoing period of mourning. How does a professional coach undertake coaching herself? How does a scheduling expert adjust her schedule? How does this translate perfectly into the real lives of new working mothers who use my tools and practices? I've got all the insights, the surprising new discoveries, the ongoing challenges, and the inspiration for you to begin to mother yourself here in this one episode! Your burning questions answered! Why do I keep saying that motherhood is not natural? How do you deal with people in your life who are less than pleased that you are operating under a new schedule that does not prioritize the world in their way any longer? And why am I stubbornly refusing to tell you if your schedule looks good to me or not? Today's episode answers some of the questions that I've been receiving about my Schedule Simplicity Solution for New Working Mothers podcast series. These are important topics for everyone who is adjusting to working motherhood. If you would like to start using my scheduling process, you can start with Episode 16 of the podcast and listen as I teach it from the beginning. Today's episode is a continuation of my conversation from Episode 39 of how I am taking care of myself during my grief following the loss of my father in early June. It's a real-time summary showing how I walk the walk and talk the talk of my own coaching practice. I'm managing my time, managing my energy, and taking amazing care of myself right now using the exact tools and practices I use with my clients. I am practicing what I preach in a big way these days. Listen to this episode for all the details as to how I am implementing my own tools and following my own advice while I grieve the loss of my father earlier this month. My tools and my coaching skill set that I teach are really serving me well right now, and I am so grateful for all of them. As I have said before on the podcast, I learned all of these skills since I became a working mother, and I now teach these to other working mothers. This is the practice of mothering myself in real time, and you can learn a lot just by listening to my current experience. Did you know that you are allowed to redefine your definition of efficiency now that you are a working mother? Yep. Efficiency for us used to look like doing 50 things without breaking a sweat. We made it look almost effortless. Most of us were the most efficient people we knew. And now that baby has arrived? It's a totally different ballgame. I think this is one of the most stark and jarring differences for working women who are new mothers. The before baby and after baby real time experience of yourself and your schedule and your life changes so profoundly. Without guidance, we really struggle to adjust, especially when we have a lot of self-identity and relationship patterns that are tied up in our old version of hyper-efficiency. In today's episode, I will teach you a process for how to redefine efficiency to your version of “mom efficiency.” What does that look like for you right now in your current experience of working motherhood? This process is one of the most freeing and helpful ones you can undertake, especially if you prided yourself on being very efficient or a perfectionist in the past. Working mothers have lots of jobs to do. We also have the job to do of making sure that we see our life beyond those jobs to do. Go big-picture with me on today's important episode where I explain how we come to be so miserable while simultaneously so successful at doing to jobs of working motherhood. We get so caught up in the functions of our day-to-day existence that we neglect some critical needs that we have. And we have this perverse brain chemistry that is creating a loop of false satisfaction. The false satisfaction leaves us feeling like we are treading water as working mothers - doing all the jobs but never feeling better. Meaningful improvements to your experience of working motherhood lie on the other side of this big-picture perspective. Feeling overwhelmed with the changing nature of the pandemic? Pandemic dynamics are adjusting very quickly here during May of 2021, including new government guidelines that are still being implemented at the time of this recording. Some of us can't wait to get back to something that looks like “normal” while others of us are alarmed by the abrupt fluctuations to mask wearing and distancing guidelines. Couple these adjustments with new working motherhood, and it can be a lot to process. Today's episode is where you find your footing. Put my “Mother Knows Best” concept to work for you immediately as you make decisions about how to move forward in your own life and work. I meet you where you are right now and give you full permission to pandemic (or not) in any way that serves your highest good as a new working mother. Even after this immediate wave of decision making comes and goes, this episode will still be intensely valuable to new working mothers who are adapting to profound change. Seriously, you are, and you always will be, the mother who knows best how to run her life! Mother Knows Best can be a challenging concept for some of us. It's important to take the time and demystify why that is the case. In today's episode, I go deep into why you might be struggling to use this specific tool on a day-to-day basis. The reason for your struggle could be simple resistance that is a normal function of the human brain, and I have the perfect brain hack for you to implement immediately. From there, we dive into self-trust, the inherent discomfort of the identity shift that all new mothers are undergoing, and the long list of societal, cultural, and systematic reasons that some of us struggle to believe that we do, in fact, know best. Our ability to put innovative tools and concepts like Mother Knows Best to work for us makes all the difference in our experience of working motherhood. Join me so that you can enjoy the ease and peace available to you on the other side of this conversation. Also, if the past weekend was your first Mother's Day, and if you found that day to be really hard, this episode will change your life! Tune in for some insightful examples of the Mother Knows Best concept that I introduced in the last episode. Let's get very explicit about how this concept provides you with powerful shifts toward a more positive experience of working motherhood. We put the thoughts “I don't know” and “Mother Knows Best” up against each other to specifically illustrate what these shifts look like in reality. I work through several examples from my own experience to highlight how I have used Mother Knows Best, both in my early days of motherhood and as recently as yesterday! Mother knows best, and that mother is you! Today's episode invites you to step into “Mother Knows Best” as a concept, an identity, and a mantra. It is the perfect antidote for those of you who are thinking “I don't know” what to do to improve your experience of working motherhood. When viewed through the lens of “Mother Knows Best,” many of the places where you might currently feel confused or stuck will instead become places where you can find clarity and access your own inner wisdom. I teach the concept of “Mother Knows Best” to clients at every step of their journey. I am teaching it to you in this episode and will be back next week with some specific examples of what “Mother Knows Best” can do for a new working mother just like you. Today we answer the big question that arises for all of us once we find some stability as working mothers. Now what? We are new working mothers who have used my Schedule Simplicity Solution to create an integrated baseline schedule. That baseline is useful. It is important. But it is not where we want to stay forever. We want more. And we want more because our human condition demands that we continue expanding, growing, evolving, and changing. We are compelled to move toward thriving, and that compulsion to find ways to thrive only increases when we become working mothers. We have an innate desire to move to what I call The Next Level. The next level of professional success. The next level of personal fulfillment. The next level of health and wellbeing. Whatever that next level is for you, I am ready to help you get there. Tune in to hear my framework for how to start your move toward The Next Level. And for how to discern what you really want for yourself and your future, even if that looks completely different than it looked before your baby arrived. We have been working on your schedule since Episode 16 of the podcast. Today we take a pause and seriously evaluate. Everyone's journey looks different, so this conversation is individual to you rather than any measurement against another person's journey. How is the process going for you? Are you feeling better now that you have been using my Schedule Simplicity Solution for New Working Mothers? If not, why not? This pause is important! Working mothers deserve to stop for a moment and take a breath. We want to sincerely celebrate you for what is working. And we want to deeply investigate the places that are not working. I include in the episode a long list of places where you can look to begin that investigation. The results of this evaluation with yourself are really valuable insight and can lead you to further and further improvements of your experience of working motherhood. Time to go beyond the 4 Basics! So far in this podcast series on my Schedule Simplicity Solution for New Working Mothers, we have focused on scheduling your sleep, your self-care, your baby's care, and your income generation. Now we take a step beyond those 4 Basics and revisit the list of to-do items that you generated during your Brain Dump from Episode 22. From your fresh vantage point of supporting yourself consistently by using my system so far, what comes next for you? And how do you fit it into your schedule? I'm giving you all of the specifics about what to do and how to do it as well as giving you permission to delegate, automate, and delete anything possible. Yep, that freak out is a normal part of the process. In this episode, I steer you toward integrity and workability in your schedule. We talk about how to move you past the freak out and toward the direction you want to be moving. This process is designed to empower you as you find your baseline schedule as a working mother. Each working mother is one unique person with 24 hours in her day. Those 24 hours are hers to use for the highest good of herself and her family. For new working mothers, it is urgently important that we take her career and her baby out of conflict with one another. That we put those 24 hours to use in such a way that her two main roles as a new mother and a career professional are integrated. Today's episode is all about how to achieve that integration. Episode 27 focuses on Basic #4 of my Schedule Simplicity Solution for New Working Mothers, Scheduling Your Income Generation. We build upon the work we have done during Basics # 1, 2, and 3. Going forward with the confidence, the relaxation, the stress-relief, the assurance that you now have that your needs are being met and your baby's needs are being met, we now develop your schedule for your income generation. Listen for all of the details about how this process can banish guilt from new working mothers who feel caught in a tug-of-war between their old career and their new baby. And learn why it is helpful to get out of any fantasies you may have had about working motherhood and firmly live into your new reality. This bonus episode is a recording of a Facebook Live that I did on March 16, 2021. You can find the video on my Facebook page, which is linked below. Curious to know why I always talk about scheduling for new working mothers while I never talk about scheduling for actual babies? The truth of it is that babies are terrible at scheduling. Baby has one job, which is to be a baby. Working mothers are the ones who are finding the solutions they need, making time to implement them, and adjusting as their babies grow. Babies are just being babies. This podcast is my full explanation as to why working mothers benefit from owning their role as scheduler, as decision maker, and as the person in charge of her time. Before the baby arrives, an expecting mother enjoys fantasies of cuddles and feeding times. After baby arrives, s*** gets real. This episode is a deep dive into Basic #3 of my Schedule Simplicity Solution for New Working Mothers. I break down the exact parts of your schedule as a working mother that are about the actual hands-on care of your baby vs. the exact parts that constitute the rest of the mechanics of motherhood. We get out of the fantasy cuddles and into the reality of your life. Do you know exactly how much time it takes you and the baby to get ready for the day? Can you operate all of the buttons and adjustments on the car seat one-handed? Is your partner fully trained in the baby's care, feeding, and speed setting preferences on the automatic baby swing? Giving time and attention to these real parts of working motherhood is very important to your level of enjoyment of your life. Without a firm grasp on this stuff, we are frequently floundering, exasperated, and overwhelmed. Your job as a working mother is to structure your time in such a way that you give yourself the time you need to be exactly the working mother you most want to be. Working motherhood changes us. We are prepared for some of those changes. Others hit us like a sucker punch. No matter the form of the changes or how welcome or unwelcome they might be, we are the only ones who can make the required adjustments. We have to shepherd ourselves through the changes, which necessitates that we focus and adjust. This is not a job we can outsource! And everyone has a completely unique and individual experience. Episode 25 of the Mother of Success Podcast explains Basic #2 of my Schedule Simplicity Solution for New Working Mothers, which is scheduling time to care for yourself. During this episode, I explain how to choose the activities you will include under this category and what to do as you experiment. Scheduling time to care for yourself is less about pedicures and more about a clear and intentional prioritization of your individual needs during this unique time of life. Instead of trying to do the same things as you did pre-baby, we give you a clear framework for how to adjust to the changes of working motherhood. On this episode, number 5 in my ongoing series explaining my Schedule Simplicity Solution for New Working Mothers, I go into the heart of the reasons we resist doing this important work. Whatever is keeping you from undertaking a scheduling overhaul, it is causing you to suffer. A new schedule is mandatory for you now that you are a working mother. It is important to your wellbeing. It is important to your career. If you feel like you are caught in a tug-of-war between your baby and your career, this episode will demystify so much about what you are experiencing as a new working mother. Motherhood can be a lot more fun if we are intentional with our time as new working mothers. I know this sounds counterintuitive. Trust me on this. Tiny babies are hilarious! And being a new mom of a tiny baby can be fun and joyful. But not if we are crowding out the fun and joy with anxiety, guilt, and worry. The good news is that you can do a lot for yourself to diminish the anxiety, guilt, and worry. Goal number one is to reduce anxiety and stress, and the easiest way to accomplish that goal quickly is to work on a schedule. During that work on your schedule, you get tons of clarity about what you need as a new working mother and starts the process of giving it to you intentionally and predictably. From there, everything else about motherhood gets more fun! Listen to this episode where I connect the dots for you between your schedule and the fun of working motherhood. How do we thrive as new working mothers? I have the answer. We thrive by minimizing the joy stealers from working motherhood. What are the joy stealers? Anxiety. Guilt. Fear. Feeling overwhelmed. That was my list. Yours might be longer or shorter or have some different things on it. But I know that you have a list of things that are stealing joy from your experience as a new working mom. Listen to this episode for the first steps on how to start to minimize your joy stealers and maximize your joy as a new working mother. I give you permission to winter. As a new working mom, this concept of “wintering” is a really important one. Rest. Gather your resources. Take some time. Our lives have a cyclical nature to them, just like the world around us does. New motherhood is a phase in that cycle when we benefit tremendously from intentional rest. Yes, it is possible to take some intentional rest even with a new baby and as the family breadwinner. Time of year is irrelevant. You could have a baby in the middle of the summer and still apply this concept and these thoughts to your experience as you recover from childbirth and adjust to new motherhood. This episode will be especially helpful for new working mothers who are beating themselves up for taking some time to themselves after childbirth. Coaching is how you figure out your ways of thriving as a new working mother. Listen to this episode for insight into what your path to thriving can look like. The ways our parents and grandparents parented us are not the ways we want to be parenting now. What we got from previous generations is less than what we want for ourselves as working mothers and what we want to give to our children. This is not an insult to our families. This is a recognition that we have a job to do. Our job is to create what we want to bring into the future as working mothers. Doing this job will benefit us in the immediate while simultaneously setting up future generations of working mothers for success that we cannot currently imagine. Just because we were raised by a working mother does not mean we are prepared for working motherhood. Doesn't that sound odd? It's totally true, though! Join me for this week's episode of the Mother of Success Podcast for a conversation with my sister. We were raised by a working mother. That was the example we saw as children and the household we grew up in. But neither of us was prepared in the least for working motherhood when it arrived for us. Why was that the case, and what have we done about it? I have lost 100 pounds since I became a working mother. That's a lot of weight to lose! It was a long process that took me about two and a half years. It's the most outwardly visible change that I have made since my son was born. But the journey to lose my weight brought me profound benefits that go far beyond my physical appearance. Along the way, I found coaching and gained a skill set that I am now able to teach to other working mothers. Tune into this episode to hear the whole story. Are you a new working mother in your later 30's or 40's? Then this episode is for you. Having a baby at age 41 propelled me into motherhood and a midlife crisis at the same time. I don't think my experience was unusual, but it's not something that people usually talk about. On today's episode, I talk about all of it. We need to delve deeply into this topic because, otherwise, the midlife crisis sneaks up on us! And when we don't understand what is happening, we blame our innocent baby for the problems in our life. None of this is your baby's fault. None of it is your fault, either! Listen to find out everything you need to know. Everyone's experience of maternity leave and the return to work is an entirely individual one. Some mothers give birth and have many months of fully paid maternity leave. Other mothers get no maternity leave at all and go back to work very quickly after giving birth. Some women find the return to work easy, while others really struggle with it even after a lot of time off. And some women experience a full-blown career crisis after having a baby. No matter what your maternity leave looks like, you can help yourself create an experience for yourself that supports your return to work. In this episode, I discuss my own experience of maternity leave and returning to work and give some helpful suggestions if you are struggling with your return to work. On this episode, I talk about my first couple of weeks as a new mother. People, it's a mixed bag. We spend our pregnancy trying to prepare for motherhood. We think we know what to expect. Then we bring home an actual baby from the hospital, and we don't understand why all of our preparation didn't actually prepare us. It's terribly confusing. Worse, many of us don't talk about our confusion, disappointment, or unmet expectations. The truth is that we planned for everything we could foresee, but we had no idea how to prepare for the unforeseeable. No one can! And we have no way to prepare for how physically injured we may be after childbirth and how our hormones will take us on an emotional rollercoaster. The best favor that we can do for ourselves is know that this phase of motherhood is not supposed to be perfect or easy. Listen in to find out how you can begin to work through any of your own not-so-great experiences. The service we used for breastfeeding guidance was the Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington, and I highly recommend them if you live in the DMV. You can find them at breastfeedingcenter.org. We celebrate the kid's birthday. How about the mother's birthday? Join me to learn about the importance of telling your birth story in a way that honors your actual experience - the good, the bad, and the traumatic. It is really important to work through any negative experiences that we might have had while giving birth, allowing ourselves space to process negative emotions and unmet expectations. I've got news for you - you are never going to get a certified letter from the baby birthing authorities that you had a fully approved birthing experience. This is your job! Nothing about being pregnant is actually helpful when the baby arrives. The fact that new mothers have been pregnant for 9 months is not a reason that the adjustment to working motherhood should be easier. Quite the opposite! We are not sugar coating this, people. Tune in for this very real discussion about all the lies my brain told me and the ones your brain might be telling you. Motherhood is a life event that scrambles our mindset. It is disorienting. It is hard. And we have to pay attention to it. I think that new working mothers benefit from mindset work and coaching more than anything else. We use our mindset as new working mothers to become the mothers of our own success.
