Fans of Duke Blue Devils Men's Basketball and Football have a lot of schedule information to dissect, and the DBR Podcast crew discusses it all on Episode 431! Through the grapevine, we now know most of the Men's Basketball schedule, so the crew gets into the non-conference schedule as well as the teams Duke will face twice in ACC play. There are a couple of key dates that should be circled on the calendar, as the non-conference slate is a pretty decent one for Jon Scheyer's first season as head coach. After the break, the ACC has done away with divisions in football, and a new schedule format will be in place beginning in 2023. We discuss Duke Football getting Tobacco Road as permanent, annual opponents and how it sets up where Duke will rarely have to leave the state of North Carolina to play football each season. It leads into new head coach Mike Elko's successes on the recruiting trail, which is generating a lot of renewed excitement about the program. We end with some thoughts on Theo John and Jack White signing Summer League deals as well as travel spiritually to Donald's birthplace, home of a highly touted basketball player who has decided to return to find his basketball mojo. And finally, we have a couple of outtakes you won't want to miss! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Tomahawk Nation: for Florida State Seminoles fans

Hello everyone, happy Wednesday -- this is Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports, presented by Tomahawk Nation. I'm Perry Kostidakis -- let's jump in. More news on the recruiting trail for FSU -- this time in the form of a 2023 linebacker commit, DeMarco Ward out of Duluth, Georgia. A three-star prospect, the Seminoles earned his pledge over conference opponents Louisville, Wake Forest, and Duke as well as the UCF Knights and Memphis Tigers. Ward stands at 6-foot-2, 205-pounds and accumulated nearly 80 tackles (65 of which were solo), three sacks, and an interception last season. In addition to linebacker, he gets reps at wide receiver, as well as playing basketball and running track to complement his gridiron exploits. Ward's ranking doesn't immediately jaw drop -- he's a newly-christened three-star -- but his highlights show an affinity for contact, an ability to diagnose plays, and some impressive flashes of athleticism. He's a nice addition to a 2023 class that's looking to hear to some good news as we get into July -- a month where FSU has the chance to snag several commits, mostly blue-chip. Some major football news in the ACC, with the conference dropping divisions starting in 2023 and instead having teams play three permanent opponents while rotating other programs on the schedule so that each team has the chance to play a home and away game at each member school. That's a benefit not lost on FSU athletic director Michael Alford, who said in a press release that “The new format means our season ticket holders will see every ACC team play in Doak Campbell Stadium over a four-year period.” As part of the new arrangement, Florida State will be facing off against the Clemson Tigers, Miami (FL) Hurricanes, and Syracuse Orange yearly. Why Syracuse? Our sources have said that rather than saddle FSU with a trap game in Georgia Tech each year, FSU lobbied for a matchup that would help expand its geographical footprint as well as present a little bit less of a challenge, given that its two permanent matchups are against two of the bigger names in the conference. For those curious, outside of FSU, Miami's other two permanent opponents are Boston College and Louisville, while Clemson is paired up with Georgia Tech and NC State. FSU track star Trey Cunningham became the second Nole in school history to be named a finalist for The Bowerman — one of three male finalists for college track and field's most prominent individual award. Via FSU, he was the first athlete in NCAA history to run 13.22 or faster nine times in the 110m hurdles and the only athlete to run 7.42 or faster four times in the 60m hurdles.  Of the three finalists, Cunningham is the only athlete to be undefeated against collegians in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Cunningham went 20-for-20 against collegiate competition. That's the major news of today -- you can read up on all of these stories and more on TomahawkNation.com, where you can always stay updated on all the latest things Florida State. The things I hear about visual schedules and autism always amaze me. I might hear some myths once or twice while others stick around for years. So in this episode, I want to set the record straight. Godfrey and Alex pick through some recent college football news. Godfrey explains the incentives at work that will get UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati to the Big 12 a year earlier than expected, and why their 2023 move could lead to an absolute blast of a conference for exactly one season. Then it's time for a round of the hot new game "Good Schedule, Bad Schedule," where Alex and Godfrey pick out three teams whose 2022 schedules are perfect fits for what those programs need right now—and three teams that put themselves in the opposite situation. Max and Vince are back after a short break. Like the team, the guys took the week off to rest up for the summer. While LAFC won't play again until June 18, Max and Vince have a great guest to help fans get a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes at the club. This week, LAFC Performance Director Gavin Benjafield joins the show. Gavin joined LAFC ahead of its first season, having spent time with Watford and Ajax before coming to MLS. After a grueling May in which LAFC played eight matches in 28 days, Max and Vince talk to Gavin about what it takes to keep a squad at its best when there are limited days for training and rest. Gavin shares some of his methodology for the players that are playing lots of matches in a short period but also how to work with the players that aren't seeing the pitch as much during that time and need extra work on the side. But, of course, injuries are part of the sport no matter how much you plan. Max and Vince ask Gavin about the approach to rehabbing an injured player and go into specifics about the recovery of Eddie Segura from a long-term injury. If you've ever been curious about how players recover and why a performance staff is vital to a professional club, this episode will tide you over until LAFC is back on the pitch in MLS. But that's not all. Before Max and Vince bring on their guest, the guys talk about LAFC players in international matches as their nations prepare for the World Cup. Plus, we talk about the rumors of Giorgio Chiellini's arrival in LA. All that and more on another episode of Inside LAFC: The Max + Vince Podcast. The end of the school year means a peek ahead to next football season. The Missouri Tigers will look to build on last season's 6-7 finish and the first task for Coach Eli Drinkwitz is to find his starting quarterback. There are four candidates, two returning players and two newcomers, and the ideal scenario would have a starter in place for fall camp. Drinkwitz discussed the position and several other topics in a recent gathering with reporters. Coaches attended the recent SEC business meetings and considered several changes like playing a nine-game league schedule once Texas and Oklahoma are part of the conference.
