Lesley Yates and Ben Hamlin have a lot in common, but their biggest shared interest is the Netflix original comedy series Bojack Horseman. We're going through the show episode by episode to find meaning in the musings of a very depressed horse. Every Tuesday right here on infinitybreak.net and where…
It’s new chapters and heartfelt endings on this episode of Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben. Folks, I was the Ben of that. And I was the Lesley. This was a podcast about Netflix original comedy series Bojack Horseman. Lesley and Ben are saying goodbye to Of Horses and Men, but not to each other.or to podcasting! We’re just switching up the topic a little bit. We have a new, broader show on the horizon: Syndicated with Lesley and Ben - an exploration on television and genre that’ll be launching later this summer. There’s plenty of details on the show in this episode! Regarding Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben, we greatly thank everyone who ever listened, wrote reviews and spread the word about our show about animation, depression and horses. Special thanks to Bethany Leuthold who made our logo and our theme song by Mandra Sigma. Special shout out to Glory Duda who edited this last episode of Of Horses and Men.
It’s a rough one! Coming off the heels of a fun and sexy romp, Lesley and Ben sit down to talk about gun violence in America, the creeping nature of dementia, and neglecting the problems directly in front of you. Don’t worry, they take plenty of time to talk about John Wick and their home cities. I hope you’re ready for a comparison of the relative population size of Austin and Portland! Just as Lenny Turtletaub’s movie studio is about to release Courtney Portnoi’s new mall based revenge flick, Miss Taken, another mass shooting rocks America. Obviously this is bad for the film industry, so Princess Caroline, Turtletaub, Courtney and Todd for some reason, sit down to talk about how they can still release the movie and save their profits from the horrors violence. A request for GirlCroosh to do a piece on the upcoming film might save their skin more than intended, because Diane’s essay on women owning guns puts firearms in purses across the nation. Meanwhile, Bojack and Hollyhock come face to face with neglect and Alzheimer’s when Bojack takes his daughter to visit his mother.
It’s Campaign Season here in Hollywoo as Mr. Peanutbutter continues his ascent to the top by digging a political hole as deep as possible. Tension between the would be governor and journalist wife come to a head when.... *sigh* look it’s the episode where everybody bones and Bojack is trying to help hollyhauk find her mother. It’s Of Horses and Men let’s go. Lesley and Ben less-than-daintily dance around the sensual moments of this episode while talking about the stability of Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter’s crumbling relationship and examine uncomfortable employee/boss power dynamics at work. It’s a slim one, folks, but don’t worry, it’s also an incredibly awkward one.
It’s self aggrandizing self pity and missed opportunities on this episode of Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben. We talk about asexual representation, democratic means testing, the importance of taking time for yourself in this latest episode. The Mr. Peanutbutter gubernatorial campaign soldiers on with some means tested stances of Fracking while Todd, everyone’s favorite sidekick, runs rampant across Los Angeles running errands for the other members of the cast. When a mysterious stranger shows up on Bojack Horseman’s door step with a claim to the family name and a bottle full of chloroform, it’s up to Todd to decide how to break it to his former best friend.
Unable to cope with anything, Bojack retreats to his family retreat where he intends to just... well the plan isn’t very clear. When a neighbor starts to notice that he’s living in misery, Bojack is forced to confront the choices that brought him here and the decision that may keep him at the lakeside forever - all while the ghosts of the Sugarman family trauma watch on. Ben and Lesley talk about non-linear editing in animation, the myth of hysteria, old timey vocal warbles and specifically Lin Manuel Miranda’s tweets. It’s a musically tragic time as your hosts tackle one of their favorite episodes of Bojack Horseman on Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben.
Lesley and Ben kick off the fourth season of Of Horses and Men and Bojack Horseman by talking about the comparative privilege of Mr. Peanutbutter, internet gossip rags and the hesitancy some people have to adopting queer labels. It’s season four, you know the deal by now, surely. The year is 1992, and Vincent D’Onofrio is struggling to perform the break dancing moves necessary to secure his role in Untitled Horsing Around Rip Off. Just as tensions are rising on the set, a young Los Angeles transplant and seeming not-actor Mr. Peanutbutter steps into the studio and starts accidentally performing for the live studio audience. Now in the modern day, Mr. Peanutbutter is trying to capture a new audience as his ex wife pilots his attempt to run for governor. In order to even get on the ballot, Mr. Peanutbutter needs to successfully recall the current governor of California - Goodchuck Woodchuck. Their appeal fails, but Peanutbutter, unfortunately, has an idea for a way to unseat the governor. Meanwhile, Diane is having trouble getting a hold of Bojack Horseman and Todd drifts away into space.
It’s Film Industry Golden Statue Satire and the gnawing sense that you’ll never be forgiven for being a monster on this week of Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben! Your depressed hosts talk about the precarious perch on which Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter’s marriage is balanced, Bojack’s future in show business and his seemingly nagging desire to run wild with other horses, Princess Caroline’s last minute career change and un-retirement and Todd’s extremely wise financial investments. All this and discussions of entertainment satire, mental health and biological determinism.
It's the pains of personal growth and the potential of a very depressed golden retriever on this final season of Bojack Horseman! Ben and Lesley discuss the new trailer for the upcoming two part season of Bojack Horseman! We talk about all the subtle hints about what’s to come woven into this trailer - from Mr. Peanutbutter’s new film to what’s happening with Todd’s family. Is Bojack actually recovering or is he just floating away on a Pink Cloud? What’s the deal with Diane, ringworms and GirlCroosh? Hear the Of Horses and Men team talk about the trailer with each other for the first time since it came out!
In 2007, Bojack Horseman finds himself outside the dressing room of international pop-star Sara Lynn with a handful of flowers and a teleplay. The stressed celebrity warmly welcomes in Bojack but turns cold when she realizes he’s only there to pitch her a guest spot on his failing tv show. Now, in the modern day, following the death of his friend and coworker Sarah Lynn, Bojack copes with various stages of grief while reconnecting with Diane and agreeing to be in Ethan’s Horsing Around reboot. But when the child actress playing Bojack’s grand daughter expresses a desire to become a famous celebrity, Bojack panics and flees the set of the show. Meanwhile Princess Caroline finds that she can’t handle the pressure of staying on vacation, and decides a very semantic career change may be the best best for her. Meanwhile Meanwhile, Todd briefly flirts with being in the 1% while coming to terms with his asexuality. Also, pasta related drama.
Unable to cope with the pain of failure and pushing his friends away, Bojack deals with his trauma the only way he knows how - medicating with booze and party drugs and watching his old television show. This time, however, he’s not alone. His former co-star, Sarah Lynn accompanies him on a manic road trip and apology tour that ends in tragedy.
Lesley and Ben sit down to talk about the problems of interpersonal relationships when you’re depressed, the dismay of creative publishing and the most important line in the series: “You need to DO better.”The Road to the Oscars is Over. It’s now officially Oscar season. Unsurprisingly, Bojack’s dramatic and moving performance in Secretariat nets him an Oscar nom. Naturally the rockstar movie star throws a massive party to celebrate and in the process, gets in dispute with Diane over their shared mental hangups. It turns out however that Mr. Peanutbutter screwed up the nominations ceremony and made up the nominations on the fly. And OF COURSE he’s going to nominate his dear personal friend Bojack Horseman. Now our equine star has to deal with the emotional whiplash of being nominated and un-nominated over the course of an evening as he analyzes his relationships with Diane, Todd and Anna Spanakopita
Ben and Lesley talk about the ambiguity between comedy and drama, the boundaries we have to set because of mental health and trauma and trying to be a better person in light of the things that afflict us. Also there’s a fun bit where we talk about the stereotypical Italian malapropisms. Fun times. Bojack invites Princess Caroline out to the restaurant he owns for an important discussion about their working relationship. What could have been a simple exchange turns in discussions of love, a fight in a meat freezer and a kitchen in flames. But truly, what could you expect from Bojack and PC taking a trip down memory lane?
Now that Bojack has a little bit of celebrity under his belt, again, the offers for various projects start pouring into the movie star’s inbox. Bojack has the chance to play a part in a respectable drama by Kelsey Jannings, make a sequel series to his old TV sitcom with Ethan or pursue blockbuster dreams by becoming “The Pegasus.” What ensues is a dramatic game of chess that would rival Game of Thrones. Meanwhile Diane accompanies Mr. Peanutbutter back to his homeland, the Labrador peninsula, and has an awkward conversation with Captain Peanutbutter. Also: Todd!
Lesley and Ben talk about customer service aggression, the malicious failures of big tech solutions, feminist profit motive and why it’s just so darn hard to talk adults in this week of Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben. Bojack wakes up outside of his home to find the inside of home filled to the brim with staff, moving boxes and computers for Todd and Emily’s new business: Cabracadabra - a ride share service that’s a safe space for women. Further aggravating the movie star is the LA Gazette, a pervasive newspaper that keeps showing up on his door step day after day. Bojack reaches his wit’s end and calls the customer service line, ready to tear them a new one. What he finds on the other line, however, is an unusually compassionate voice..
Upon learning about her surprise pregnancy, Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter decide that it would be best if Diane underwent an abortion. Unable to deal with the stress of her upcoming procedure and distracted by Bojack, Diane accidentally tweets about her abortion from her client Sextina Aquafina’s twitter account. Now entrenched in a PR disaster, Diane has to navigate her own future while dealing with Sextina’s flippant approach to the same circumstances. Meanwhile Bojack finds himself on the road to the Oscars without as many minor awards as he wanted. Perhaps the system is working against him.. or one agent of it anyway
The box office numbers for Secretariat start to roll in - and it looks like Bojack’s dream project is an absolute success. Todd and Bojack go hit the down and, in the process, run into Emily - a old flame and friend of Todd’s from High School. The three of them crash a wedding rehearsal dinner and Bojack sabotages not one, but two relationships as he disrupts a lesbian wedding and any attempt at romantic connection between Todd and Emily. Meanwhile, in couples therapy, Diane discovers that she can’t communicate her emotions toward Mr. Peanutbutter until she takes a load of drugs, and Princess Caroline attempts to utilize her time off for romance. Lesley and Ben talk about the visual language of hallucinogenic drug usage, the complexities of Judah, whether or not film festivals really matter and LESLEY’S NEW CAAAAAAT.
It’s an in depth examination of the way we consume media, millennial attention spans, visual storytelling, pantomime, intimacy and loneliness and so much more on this submerged episode of Of Hoses and Men with Lesley and Ben! It’s the underwater episode. As part of his award tour, Bojack Horseman is asked to go get on a plane and attend a premiere of Secretariat in a foreign market. Except that by a plane, she means a submarine and by a foreign market, she means the ocean. Completely unable to comprehend the culture around him and seemingly unable to speak, Bojack finds himself a stranger in a strange land. Which would be fine, if he were not sharing the open seas and this film festival with Kelsey Jannings.
Not to get Marxist on main or anything, but Lesley and Ben tackle happiness culture and the idea that hard work and commodities will make you happy. It’s a very philosophical episode of Of Horses and Men. While hob-nobbing and rubbing elbows with various academy voters, Bojack Horseman is assigned a task of the utmost secrecy by Jill Pill. You see, ahhh, in the past, Jill may have written some compromising words to Cuddlywhiskers, Bojack’s former collaborator and she’d like that love letter back. What seems like a simple errand quickly turns into a detective serial worthy of Raymond Chandler Meanwhile, Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane’s relationship begins to strain even further as Diane continually neglects and ignores her husband while on this adventure.
Remember during the previous episode when that one reporter brought up the Bojack Horseman show? And how Jill Pill mentioned Bojack’s /actual/ previous show? Haha what was up with that? It’s time to find out what was up with that! It’s a flash back episode and that means we’re spending plenty of time with all your favorite characters in the distant land of 2007. Hear! Bojack and a large charismatic hamster write a script in one night! See! Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane’s first actual meeting! Feel! The wrath of 2007 Princess Caroline’s pretty kitty claws as she fights institutional sexism! It’s a blast from the past on this week’s Of Horses and Men!
The Secretariet Press Tour is underway as Bojack Horseman and Anna Spanakopita go through round after round of press interviews for Bojack’s Oscar bait blockbuster. Bojack gets increasingly defensive when more of the film journalists he’s interviewing with assert that Horsing Around was not a good show. Our star is forced to come to grips with the fact that he has to trash part of his past to move into his future While in New York, the city of dreams, Bojack is courted by Avant Garde playwright and marionette mastermind Jill Pill who offers him a chance to be her latest theatrical star. Bojack leaves the meeting asserting that he’s not an actor that takes risks, but not even later that day, he screws up a one night stand in such a way that the future of his film may be in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Princess Caroline is managing her new agency with efficiency and Meanwhile Meanwhile, Todd gets lost in New York.
It’s abandoned movie projects and comedy cruise lines, the war torn country of Cordovia and the relationships on hiatus, misplaced love affairs and new business ventures, thirty year comas and Di-isneylands on this Season of Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben. Your favorite hosts cover their favorite arcs, character growth and pick into the deeper meaning of Bojack Horseman Season Two. Is Bojack really an actor? What does Todd need most of all? What's holding our characters back? All this and more in the latest episode of Of Horses and Men. We'll be back in two weeks for the start of Season Three!
Bojack returns from his misadventures in New Mexico and finds his house in ruins. Diane has been crashing at the Horseman estate for months now and her life isn’t the only one is disarray. Princess Caroline is starting a new agency, but her personal relationship with Rabbinowitz is on the fritz. Diane and Peanutbutter still aren’t talking to each other, and Mr. Peanutbutter doesn’t even know his wife is back in the country. Meanwhile Todd is doubling down on his commitment to improv comedy by joining the giggle ship. All this and it would seem that Lenny Turtletaub finished Bojack’s dream project without him.. and then erased him from it completely.
Bojack has gone awol. The star of television of book finds himself on the front step of turquoise shop in New Mexico after seemingly driving all night to see his friend Charlotte. Bojack’s attempts to rekindle a perceived romance are halted when he’s introduced to his old friend’s family: Kyle, Trip and Penny. After a few white lies and a.. very expensive purchase: Bojack starts a new life in New Mexico. Uncle Bojack offers to take Charlotte’s dejected daughter Penny to her prom, but from there his ideal escape from LA quickly comes to an end.. If you like the show, please take the time to tell your friends about it and/or leave a review on iTunes. The more positive reviews we get, the more it helps more people find the show!
Special guest Johnny Rinaldo returns to talk about one of his favorite arcs of the show! This one got a little goofy, so there's about ten minutes of bonus content up on out patreon for $1/mo Diane is overstaying her welcome at the Horseman household, much to the frustration of Bojack’s other roommate, his girlfriend Wanda, who is barely tolerating Diane’s day drinking and disinterest in cleaning. Speaking of frustration, Bojack finds himself confused that the new director of his movie, Abe, isn’t bothering to go back for second takes. Upset that his collaborator isn’t putting more effort into the project, he confronts Abe, who assures him that it’ll be fine and they’ll fix it in post - and that “hey, we aren’t making casablanca over here.” Meanwhile, Princess Caroline and Rabinowitz makes moves on their new partnership and each other as they try to recruit their old clients to their new agency. Diane is unable to deal with the guilt of lying to Mr. Peanutbutter about having left Cordovia and drags Bojack down to her level. Bojack succumbs back to his old ways of day drinking and lazing about - and stops showing up to the set of Secretariet.
Our story begins in the 70s, with a young Bojack watching his hero Secretariat. The racehorse champion is giving an interview about our boys out in Vietnam fighting the good fight against the communists. Secretariat’s patriotic performance seems less than convincing - but it leaves an impression on young Bojack, who upon seeing his hero smoke, tries a cigarette from his mother’s purse. That does not end well. Now in the present, something’s missing from Bojack’s Secretariat movie. Turtletaub has cut out some critical scenes and Bojack feels it’s messing with the story’s intended message. Defensive about his hero’s legacy, Bojack recruits Mr. Peanutbutter, Princess Caroline, Kelsey Jannings and character actress Margo Martindale to stage a heist in the Nixon library to get the most poignant shot of the film.
It’s a zany episode this week on of Of Horses and Men! Really full to the brim with Toddfoolery. It’s the first live taping of Wanda, Mr. Peanutbutter and JD Salinger’s game show: Hollywoo Stars and Celebrities: What do they know: Do they know things?: Let’s find out! Bojack is volunteered to be one of the first contestants so that he can support his girlfriend’s ambitions. Mr. Peanutbutter is an intense game show host and his gentle ribbing starts to get under Bojack’s skin, especially when boy wizard and significantly more famous celebrity Daniel Radcliff is revealed to be the surprise guest. Bojack intentionally flubs an answer for Wanda’s sake, making himself vulnerable to the mockery of Mr. Peanutbutter and the audience. Bojack snaps back at his friend and the two of them air their dirty laundry on live television. Will this conflict bring JD Salinger the ratings he desires, or will it all be for naught?
We Watched; We Wept; We Recorded. Lesley and Ben have returned from a weekend long binge of the fifth season of Bojack Horseman and we have THOUGHTS. It's trailers and theories on this episode of OF Horses and Men With Lesley and Ben. It's an emergency recording session because the SEASON FIVE trailer of BOJACK HORSEMAN just went live yesterday. Ben and Lesley scrambled to set up their mics and get Lesley's frame by frame observational analysis and Ben's philosophical musings live to tape for you. Here what we think about the blurred lines between reality and fiction, Princess Caroline's past, Diane's new haircut and whether or not Mr. Peanutbutter and Bojack Horseman are finally going to kill each other.
Content Warning: This episode depicts accidental deaths that are visually similar to suicide. This is done in a tongue in cheek way but discussion of said jokes may be harmful to some listeners. Proceed with caution. Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd’s antics at PB Living have landed them in financial ruin. Unable to continue randomly investing into their wildest whims, Peanutbutter goes out and tries to get a job with nothing but a dream in his heart. Unfortunately, his agent has died in an unfortunate, sexual incident, and so PB ends up working at a shoe store. That’s.. Probably not the worst part of that sentence. Princess Caroline’s talent agency scrambles to pick up the dead agent’s contacts and clients - and Princess Caroline finds herself with one name on her list - elusive hermitted author JD Salinger. Meanwhile, in a very sitcomy plot, Bojack Horseman accidentally tells Wanda he loves her. A sentiment which she does not share.
We're Back in the Saddle! Sorry folks, we explain it in the episode, but things just got busy for us both. But Of Horses and Men is back and the same quality as ever! We talk about cannibalism, external validation, animal metaphors and how cops aren't your friends in this high energy return episode of Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben. Hey folks, you know how we haven’t talked at all about what the people this animal world eat? Well oh BOY ARE WE ABOUT TO. In the world of Bojack Horseman, there are two competing chicken companies in Los Angeles, Chicken for Days and Gentle Farms. Gentle Farms asserts in its commercial that it’s against factory farming and that its chicken exist solely to be food - so there’s moral grey area. That’s not the darkest thing that happens in this episode. A chicken for days chicken escapes from custody during a car accident with Bojack - and wanders across Beverly Hills until Todd Chavez adopts her as his wife - Bok Bok Becca.
After her birthday celebration, Mr. Peanutbutter presents Diane with an unasked for surprise party. The couple gets into a fight over a meaningless piece of trivia, causing their friends to say their goodnights and go their separate ways. Princess Caroline sees child Vincent in the streets and cannot be convinced otherwise that Vincent has a secret family. Bojack and Wanda accidentally run over a deer and Wanda gives Bojack an extended metaphor for their relationship in the form of a joke. Meanwhile Diane finally admits to Mr. Peanutbutter that she’s just not happy where they are in their marriage.
In a brief flashback to the taping of the Horsing Around pilot, Herb Kazaz imparts a simple word of advice to the four new members of his cast: that they’re family and should treat each other as such. Smash cut forward in time and the four actors are together again for a less than happy reunion: Herb’s funeral. Bojack temporarily crosses paths with Charlotte, Herb’s deer ex girlfriend, who lets Bojack know that if he’s ever in New Mexico she should come find him. The cast of Horsing Around is at each other’s throats until they presented with an floppy disk that leads to Herb Kazaz’s secret gold. What happens next is a trip down memory lane and a scathing indictment of former Happy Days star Henry Winkler. Lesley and Ben are joined by future Infinity Break star Johnny Rinaldo, who imparts his wisdom on grief, the nature of loss and graphic design while Lesley and Ben reflects on found family narratives.
Todd Chavez has built a Disneyland. That’s the show. Following the success of his biography, Bojack Horseman finds that the fame he left behind a decade ago has resurfaced. Bojack finds that his dates are only dating him because he’s trendy and his restaurant and favorite watering hole have been flooded with tourists and fans. At a roller rink in the valley, Bojack meets Wanda, an owl TV executive who has just woken up from a thirty year coma. Bojack is enchanted by the fact that she has no idea who he is and they hit it off. Bojack finds himself in a romantic relationship with Wanda that starts to fall apart because of Bojack’s insecurities. Meanwhile, Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd get into a dispute over their ownership of somebody else’s intellectual property For this special episode, Ben and Lesley are joined by longtime Bojack Horseman fan, Candace Raphael! It's our first time recording with a guest!
Filming has begun on the Secretariat Biopic movie and Bojack Horseman is getting some stage fright. Bojack has tasked himself with turning over a new leaf with the help on an audio book narrated by George Takei. As part of his renewed lease on life, Bojack has thrown out his old couch that Todd used to sleep in this episode. Meanwhile, Diane feels unfilled at her new job as a character consultant on the set of the new Secretariat movie. With Sebastian St. Clair calling her about his humanitarian adventures, Diane is starting to wonder if she made the right choice. Meanwhile, Mr. Peanutbutter tries to make friends through the magic of the Mighty Mighty Boss Tones.
Back in the 90s I was in a very famous tv show. Over the last twelve episodes, we’ve gone on a journey through the first season of BoJack Horseman, in which Lesley and Ben dissected the episodes piece by piece, scene by scene, sight gag by sight gag, to bring you the best analysis of BoJack Horseman possible. Well, Season One done, and we’re getting ready to launch into Season Two next week. Before we do that, we wanted to take a quick opportunity to discuss some of the over-arcing themes that Season One has brought us and discuss the show as a whole.
Content Warning: This episode features discussion of suicide from about minute 00:06:30 to 00:09:00. The discussion is extremely brief and specific content warning is featured within the episode. In the final narrative episode of season one, Lesley and Ben get a little fatalist and talk about living a life well lived, what Ben's Christian middle school defined as character, the comedic complexities of Vincent Adultman and how Bojack's past shapes his present. We're finally done with season one! Thank you all very much for your support! We'll be back next week with a season one recap and then we move into season two! In 1973, famed racing horse Secretariat answers a letter from a young Bojack Horseman during his appearance on the Dick Cavett show. He encourages Bojack that, in order to deal with his sadness, he should run forward and never look back. In the present, Bojack enjoys the fleeting success of his new book and convinces Princess Caroline and Lenny Turtletaub that now is the best time to make the Secretariat biopic he's been wanting to make his whole life. Will this dream project be what finally makes our very depressed horse happy?
ARRRRRRT EPISODE! Lesley and Ben talk about the drug filled mania that is Episode 11 of Season 1. We get into visual story telling through editing, what if scenarios, the need for interpersonal validation even if it's false, and drugs. Lotsa lotsa drugs. Also, psst, there's some bonus content on our patreon about social media validation. Bojack finds himself, let’s say, less than pleased with Diane’s portrayal of him in her book. He vows to his publisher that he will have a better book written for him in five days. Here’s the thing though, Bojack is not an author. And neither is Todd or Sarah Lynn, who Bojack recruits to help him pen his great American autobiography. This sounds like a good plan right? Well unfortunately: drugs.
Does this episode feel familiar. It's a Hollywoo madcap comedy on this week of Of Horses and Men with Lesley and Ben. Bojack is on the set of his new movie, an exact replication of Episode 6 - Our A Story is A D Story - when Bojack stole the D off of the Hollywood sign for Diane. Todd manages to get hired as a production assistant under Quinten Tarantulino and his unchecked ambition turns The Mr. Peanut Butter story into a space opera into an interactive app into a curated box of snacks. Bojack and Todd finally come to a head around Bojack sabotaging the Rock Opera. And Lastly and definitely not leastly in terms of long term continuity, Diane’s Bojack book is done, but after Bojack rejects it’s narrative, a vengeful Diane publishes some damning excerpts of it on Buzzfeed.
We're back to the jokes! Thank God! Mere moments after the events of episode eight, and by that we mean the kiss, Bojack and Diane have a tense interaction in the car. Bojack decides that he knows what’s in Diane’s best interests and vows to sabotage the wedding with the help of Todd and Princess Caroline. Neither of them really bite into Bojack’s plan - with Todd being very uncomfortable about spying on Mr. Peanutbutter. Princess Caroline finds herself a boyfriend in the form of three kids stacked inside a trench coat, and Todd accidentally becomes best friends with Mr. Peanutbutter after agreeing to become his driver. After several failed attempts to sabotage the wedding, Bojack resigns himself to being happy for his friends.
It's a sad one today folks! Lesley and Ben theorize about Herb and Bojack's last moments together before Herb got fired, pick apart Bojack Horseman's incredible art design and, most importantly, Todd makes friends! YAY TODD! Our story switches over to Bojack’s side and explains why he suddenly dropped out of the film project Princess Caroline proposed to him at the end of the last episode. Bojack decides to go visit Herb Kazazz after his passive aggressive invitation to come to Malibu. In the car, he relays the story of their friendship, telling Diane about their meeting in the 80s comedy scene and working together on the first couple of years of Horsing Around. A few years into Horsing Around, Herb and Bojack have a tense working relationship, but when Herb is caught in a scandal that threatens the show with cancellation, Bojack agrees to stand by him. When push comes to shove, Bojack is railroaded out of a choice and doesn’t speak up when the time comes.
It’s a Princess Caroline centric episode! FINALLY! Lesley and Ben talk about how streaming formatting changes comedy storytelling and multiple perspective stories, Ben talks about his workaholism and we both have plenty of praise for Princess Caroline. After Bojack shows up at her house, or maybe it was her office, during a bender, Princess Caroline decides to get her life and his career back together. She turns up at work to find that her agency is descending into chaos and is undergoing a merger. Caroline finds that she’s sharing a workspace with vindictive power player Vanessa Gecko. Meanwhile Bojack tries to rekindle his love affair with Princess Caroline, sabotaging parts of her career in progress. Todd lands an endorsement deal for German Bourbon. And we are introduced to the reptilian wonders that are Charlie Witherspoon and Lenny Turtletaub. Between juggling clients, Bojack’s misplaced affection, and trying to counter Vanessa’s attempts to push her further down the ladder, she completely misses her own birthday.
We're finally at the episode that Lesley ahs been talking about so much! We talk about world building, transitioning into absurdism and Todd's organized crime problem on this week of Of Horses and Men.Bojack and Diane return from Boston and get dinner with Mr. Peanutbutter. A bit of a feud starts between the two sitcom starts as they try to one-up each other in front of their shared romantic interest. When Peanutbutter and Diane leave for home, Bojack gets blackout drunk and steals the D off of the giant Hollywood sign. Do you like what you're listening to? While on a business trip to New York City to talk with the publishers of their book, Diane has to swing by Boston to deal with the death and subsequent funeral of her father. It turns out that Diane’s family is made up of absolutely horrible people who don’t appreciate her in the slightest. Meanwhile, Todd has been left home alone for the week. While Bojack finds himself unable to deal with a friends grief, Todd and Princess Carolina make an illegal fortune off of Bojack’s vacant home by pretending it belongs to actor David Boreanaz
This is a turning point episode of Bojack Horseman and that means we've got an intellectual episode of Of Horses and Men. We talk about ways to introduce the audience to character depth with the way Todd is handled in this episode and Bojack's transition from being an oblivious uncaring person to a willfully destructive jerk toward his friends. And Ben is a total Zelda about Buzzfeed and the way internet media commodifies nostalgia and how it forces us into boxes. "I don't like being told what my culture is and I also don't like the parts of my culture that I actually participated in being fed back to me insincerely." It's a thinking man's episode of Of Horses and Men but we always have plenty of time to talk about our favorite gags.
Lesley and Ben tackle one of the more awkward episodes of Bojack Horseman. We talk about character redemption, cultural nihilism and feminist character design in this complex episode. Bojack Horseman is reunited with Sarah Lynn, the youngest cast member on his former sitcom. Sarah has grown up twice and become a pop star and now a washed up has been. Sarah has a violent break down in a furniture store, stabbing herself when her boyfriend, Andrew Garfield (yes the Spider-Man) breaks up with her. Bojack attempts to check her into rehab but that doesn’t last. Sarah Lynn guilts her way into Bojack’s heart and house by playing up their past relationship. After a seemingly endless party at Bojack’s, the sitcom star finally breaks and tries to suggest she go to rehab again. Sarah Lynn storms out of the house saying that none of this is truly her fault and she can live responsibility free. Meanwhile, Princess Caroline is trying to be one of the cool kids long enough to get herself a brand new client.
Lesley and Ben continue their journey through the first season of the Netflix Original Comedy Bojack Horseman. This time, Bojack Horseman gets in a fight with a Navy Seal and we talk about how a second episode of television does a lot more heavy lifting than the first.
What if there was a media podcast, but just about one TV show about a depressed horse? In this brand new media analysis podcast, Lesley Yates and Ben Hamlin break apart each episode of the Netflix original comedy Bojack Horseman and look for meaning among the musings of a depressed horse. We're starting with the pilot, obviously, and that means Bojack and Diane's first meeting, Princess Caroline's breakup with Bojack and not enough of Paul F Tompkins as Mr. Peanutbutter.
