Sonny Von Cleveland's Story • Our Voice Is Our Healing Mechanism

[Content Warning]: Discussion of childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault in a carceral setting, and graphic statistics related to child sexual abuse material and human trafficking. What if the very thing you've been hiding is the thing that could set you free? Sonny Von Cleveland is an author, speaker, and survivor who spent most of his childhood enduring sexual abuse by multiple perpetrators, beginning before he could form reliable memories of it. At 16, facing the compounded wreckage of an unprotected childhood, he entered the prison system and spent 18 years inside. Today he has recently been appointed as Director of Public Engagement and Content with Our Rescue and works alongside Operation Light Shine to fight child sexual exploitation and trafficking at the source. In this conversation with Jan Broberg, Sonny introduces a framework he calls comparative trauma syndrome, the damaging habit of ranking our pain against someone else's, and based on that, deciding we're not worthy of healing. He and Jan explore why speaking about trauma isn't re-traumatizing but strengthening, why voice is the one healing tool no one can take from you, and what it actually means to interrupt your own trauma cycle. They also go deep on Operation Light Shine's intercept task forces, the staggering gap in government funding for child exploitation prevention, and what every parent and every social media user can do right now to protect children.Where To Find Sonny: Buy Sonny's book: Hey White Boy: Conversations of Redemption Conversations of Redemption on Youtube Our Rescue Mentioned Resources: Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl Operation Light Shine Hunting Warhead If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or suicidal ideation, please access the resources below:National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call/Text 988National Sexual Assault Hotline  (RAINN) : 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)National Alliance for Mental Illness: 1-800-950-6264

[Content Warning]: Discussions of childhood sexual abuse, physical and emotional abuse, parental betrayal, chronic trauma-related physical illness, and medical dismissal. When doctors can't find anything wrong, it doesn't mean nothing is wrong; it may mean they're looking in the wrong place. In this episode, Jan sits down with Dr. David Clarke, a gastroenterologist-turned-pioneer in neuroplastic medicine, to explore the real, physical ways that trauma lives in the body long after the abuse has stopped. From a patient with one bowel movement a month to a man with 55 years of unexplained stomach pain, Dr. Clarke's stories aren't just remarkable — they're a roadmap for anyone who has ever been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told to just get over it. This conversation is for every survivor who has wondered why their body still hurts. Dr. David Clarke is a board-certified gastroenterologist and president of the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms (ATNS), a volunteer-led nonprofit he founded to bring science-backed treatment to the millions of people whose physical symptoms are rooted in stress, trauma, and adverse childhood experiences. His book They Can't Find Anything Wrong is used as a medical school textbook in Slovenia and can be found in libraries across multiple continents. Where To Find Dr. David Clarke: They Can't Find Anything Wrong by Dr David Clarke Be Sure To Visit: Symptomatic.me Dr. David Clarke's Podcast: The Story Behind The SymptomsIf you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or suicidal ideation, please access the resources below: National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call/Text 988 National Sexual Assault Hotline  (RAINN) : 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) National Alliance for Mental Illness: 1-800-950-6264

Content Warning: Discussion of suicide and suicidal ideation. In this episode of Mormon Stories, Gustavo Hernandez from Mexico City shares his experience growing up Mormon in Mexico, discovering difficult church history as a teenager, and ultimately choosing to remain an active, believing member of the Church while navigating doubt, anxiety, and faith crises. Gustavo opens up about the shame culture surrounding worthiness, pornography confessions, and perfectionism in Mormonism –including how teachings from leaders like Spencer W. Kimball deeply affected his mental health as a young teen. He discusses experiencing panic attacks, existential dread, and suicidal thoughts while trying to reconcile faith, church history, and his desire to feel accepted by God. Along the way, Gustavo encountered the CES Letter, Mormon Stories, exMormon Reddit, temple controversies, Joseph Smith's polygamy, the priesthood ban, Freemasonry, and multiple First Vision accounts. Despite everything, he chose to stay active in the Church, serve a mission in Guatemala, and eventually became an institute teacher in Mexico. The interview includes topics like what it's like being Mormon in Mexico, growing up in a predominantly Catholic culture, p*rnography shame and bishop interviews, faith crisis as a fourteen year old boy, the CES Letter and apologetics, mission burnout, mental health and suicidal ideation, remaining active after losing certainly, as well as current beliefs about Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, polygamy, and LGBTQ issues. Whether you agree with Gustavo's conclusions or not, his story offers an honest and nuanced look at faith, doubt, mental health, and what it means to stay.___________________Show NotesYouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. In Julius Caesar, Shakespeare repeatedly reminds us that Brutus is an honorable man. In this episode we will explore if this is true, how Shakespeare depicts both masculine honor and its early modern counterpart, feminine virtue, in the characters of Brutus and Portia, and how Portia's characterization by editors and theatremakers has changed over time.  First, we unpack how honor was defined for Shakespeare's audiences and how the play incorporates Early Modern anxieties about rhetoric throughout the plot. We then closely examine Brutus's desire to be perceived as honorable, how that shapes his choices, and whether or not he is ultimately honorable.  Then we will turn to Portia, tracing how editors and theatremakers have altered her language and characterization across time in order to make her virtue more palatable to the moral expectations of their moment. We look at what gets changed, what gets softened or erased, and what those choices reveal about how women are policed on stage and on the page.  Content Warning: Discussions of suicide and self-harm.  If you are in crisis, please call, text or chat with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK  to 741741. In this emotionally charged episode, Alyssa and Nadia confront the devastating reality of gun violence in America, prompted by a recent mass shooting at Brown University. What was supposed to be the season's final, positive episode became an urgent conversation about a tragedy that hits too close to home.Nadia shares her firsthand experience growing up with active shooter drills throughout elementary and high school—practicing hiding, barricading doors, and staying silent as routinely as fire drills. She recalls learning about Sandy Hook Elementary when she was in second grade, 13 years ago, marking the beginning of a childhood defined by preparation for violence. Now at Northeastern, she's met people with direct connections to that tragedy, realizing how interconnected these events truly are.The conversation explores the cruel irony of their reality: students are trained to survive mass shootings as if they're inevitable natural disasters, yet unlike earthquakes, these tragedies are preventable. Alyssa expresses heartbreak over a generation that has never known safety in schools, while Nadia describes the constant anxiety of knowing violence could happen anywhere—in classrooms, movie theaters, or public spaces. They discuss potential solutions, from stricter gun control policies to addressing the mental health crisis and community fragmentation that may contribute to such violence. Nadia references Australia's swift policy changes after a mass shooting decades ago, noting that while a recent shooting occurred there, it was the first in many years—proof that legislation can make a difference, even if it's not 100% effective. The episode concludes with expressions of grief for the Brown University community, for all 389 mass shooting victims in the year so far, and for a generation forced to live in a constant state of alertness. Both hosts commit to continuing advocacy for change, refusing to accept this violence as inevitable.TakeawaysStudents today have practiced active shooter drills as routinely as fire drills since elementary school, normalizing preparation for violenceSandy Hook Elementary (13 years ago) was a formative event for many in Nadia's generation, marking the beginning of childhood awareness about mass shootingsIn 2025, there have been 389 mass shootings—more shootings than days in the yearThe constant threat of gun violence creates a persistent state of anxiety, affecting mental health and community engagementAustralia's stricter gun control policies after a mass shooting decades ago have significantly reduced such incidents, demonstrating that legislative action can be effectiveThe tragedy affects not just direct victims but entire communities, with ripple effects reaching people who know someone connected to each eventDesensitization to mass shootings is a coping mechanism, making it easier to move on but harder to maintain the outrage needed for changeFocusing on advocacy and supporting affected communities is essential, even when systemic change feels impossibleChapters0:10–0:27 – Content Warning: Discussion of Gun Violence0:27–0:59 – Introduction: From Positive Finale to Tragedy1:09-1:42 – A Generation Defined by Fear1:42–2:45 – Nadia's Experience with Active Shooter Drills2:45–3:55 – Sandy Hook: The Beginning of Awareness3:55–6:07 – Preparation as Acceptance: The Cruel Irony6:07–7:27 – Living with Constant Threat7:27–9:19 – 389 Shootings This Year: The Frustration of Inaction9:19–10:08 – Community Fragmentation and Collective Fear10:08–11:19 – Political Division and the Impossibility of Unity11:19–12:21 – Learning from Australia's Response12:21–13:26 – Hate Crimes and Targeted Violence13:26–14:48 – Desensitization and the Friend at Brown14:48–16:15 – If Sandy Hook Wasn't Enough, What Will Be16:15–17:15 – Swimming in It: Not Knowing Any Other Reality17:15–18:09 – Hope for Future Generations18:09–19:35 – Final Thoughts: Apologies and Anger

In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Dekker explores the research on birthing positions and tried-and-true midwifery practices for protecting the perineum during childbirth. She explains why the flat-on-your-back position we often see on television isn't ideal and walks through the key differences between upright, sacrum-flexible positions, and common hospital practices like lithotomy and routine episiotomies.   Dr. Dekker reviews data from global research as well as real-world wisdom from midwives, including the extraordinary outcomes of hands-off, undisturbed birth approaches in the Philippines. She uncovers how hospital system pressures, caregiver convenience, and even obstetric violence drive the overwhelming use of recumbent positions and invasive interventions while sidelining evidence-based, patient-centered care. You'll hear firsthand strategies for minimizing severe tears, promoting intact perineums, and advocating for birth plans that prioritize the autonomy and comfort of birthing people.   Content Warning: Discussion of tears of the vagina, severe tears from the vagina to the rectum, obstetric violence related to episiotomies, and being forced giving birth on your back.   Resources For a full list of resources, visit: ebbirth.com/221 Watch the video version here on our YouTube channel which includes study breakdowns and PowerPoint slides. We look at the impact of her message on the news media as well as the growing body of critics who made the radical suggestion that maybe there wasn't a vast network of satanists operated undetected in the United States (shocking, I know) and that maybe Pat was less than up front about her claims.Topics discussed include: how does Geraldo Rivera keep getting work, Richmond's Satanist-Methodist ratio, the question of whether Pat knew her son was turning into a werewolf, and the salacious indiscretions of one of Pat's closest allies.Read Michael Stackpole's Pulling Report here: https://rpgstudies.net/stackpole/pulling_report.html.If you're looking for another well-researched epic takedown of the 1980s Satanic Panic, check out: Robert D. CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of sex work, sexual assault. Spaghetti westerns are their own unique style, their own flavor, and one of the key issues is the dialogue is almost always sloppy and cheesy. Yet Sergio Leone, a true master of filmmaking, took that to a different artistic height, and really made it perfect with this film. This film is impeccably shot, with spans of John Ford's favorite locations that would make the father of the genre salivate. The cast is top notch, with a truly evil villain made all the more bad by the fact that they got America's Dad to play him. The only thing missing is punchier dialogue, but when it comes to Leone, it's worth the eye rolls to wait for the next incredible shot. No one knows what movie they're supposed to be in, the script is missing a ton of connective tissue, and Steve McQueen has the audacity to be bad at acting and an insufferable tool. There's a lot in the genre for us to catch up on, and we start this week with a seminal film, one whose importance is unfortunately the only thing it's really got going for it. John Ford practically created the Western as we know making this movie but the dialogue and the characters are so rigid that it's somehow boring for a 90-minute movie. Still, if you've ever rolled your eyes at John Wayne and wondered "how the hell did he get to be a movie star", look no further than his performance here, smoldering and intense while staying relatable. The cast is pretty great, and the stunts are on par with anything that can be done with wires today. Still, this one is more "important" than a fun hang, so proceed with caution. In fact, you might suspect we did this series just to watch this movie, and you'd be at least a little bit right. Fortunately, the film doesn't disappoint, taking the well-worn movie journalism formula and taking it in a completely different direction. This movie is all about subtlety, accuracy, and most of all, real human storytelling. There's very few frills involved and very few liberties taken, which is the perfect way to tell the story of uncovering one of the most heinous abuses of power and trust in human history. There's no hero worship and no easy answers here, just plain great storytelling. No wonder it won Best Picture. We're finish on a high note with 2015's Spotlight on Have a Good Movie! CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of homophobia, sexual assault, spousal abuse. This week's movie may not be the gayest movie ever but it's certainly one of the most famous. The star power here is off the charts, with two absolute bona fide movie stars and a perfect up and comer as our three gorgeous, fabulous, out of this world drag queens. Unfortunately the movie seems to think that ultimately we need less time with the queens and more time with a small town looking for help. It's a mistake, and one that keeps the movie from being in the ultimate pantheon. But my, what a magic fairy-dust ride it is. We're headed to Hollywood as we watch 1995's To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar on Have a Good Movie! CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of suicide and suicidal ideation. While presented in a lighthearted manner, listener discretion is advised. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts, please call or text 988 for help. Savage Steve Holland probably never contemplated his cartoons and wacky sense of humor would result in him making a true cult teen classic, but that's exactly what happened. John Cusack is just starting to find his path to the ultra-awkward teen of our dreams, and his supporting cast is pretty fun to boot. But mostly, the bits just keep on coming and just when you think a joke is overdone, a new one pops up in its place. We want our two dollars as we watch 1985's Better Off Dead on Have a Good Movie! CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of gaslighting, spousal abuse, spousal murder, murder, misogyny. We're getting a little spooky this week with a slow-burn cult horror classic that dares to make its female characters complex and unique and its male characters thoroughly one-dimensional. Somehow it's the men that are utterly unbelievable for a change. That said, there's a pretty great movie to be found in among the wreckage, a fact that filmmakers 30 years later were utterly and completely unable to reconcile. People in 2004 thought that making a dark, subtle allegory for the horrors of the patriarchy into live-action Looney Tunes was a good idea, and then made it. And since we're completionists, we subjected ourselves to both. Join us as we enjoy 1975's and despair 2004's The Stepford Wives on Have a Good Movie! "He's My Hero" - Gilgo Beach Killer's Wife Defends Rex Heuermann Despite DNA on Bodies | Psychologist Reacts In this deeply disturbing analysis of the Peacock documentary, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and I decode the most baffling true crime mystery: How did Rex Heuermann's family NOT KNOW he was allegedly the Long Island Serial Killer? We examine Asa Ellerup's shocking devotion to her husband despite DNA evidence linking him to seven murders. From her declaration that "he's my hero" to her bizarre claim that saying "I love you" would hurt him, we explore the psychological phenomenon of "negative hallucination" - not seeing what's right in front of you. Key revelations include: The secret room with a steel door that even his wife couldn't enter Why Rex was present 90% of the time but killed during the 10% when family was away How he chose a vulnerable, submissive partner who wouldn't question him Victoria Heuermann's evolution from defender to believing he's "most likely" guilty The disturbing prison phone calls where Asa still lights up hearing his voice Why trauma bonding can survive even murder charges This isn't just about the Gilgo Beach murders - it's about how predators select and manipulate their own families, creating expanding circles of trauma. We explore cognitive dissonance, compartmentalization, and the psychology of denial in one of the most complex true crime cases of our time. ⚠️ Content Warning: Discussion of serial murder, psychological manipulation, and family trauma #RexHeuermann #GilgoBeach #LongIslandSerialKiller #TrueCrime #AsaEllerup #VictoriaHeuermann #SerialKiller #CriminalPsychology #TraumaBonding #TrueCrimeCommunity Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?  Check out our YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@hiddenkillerspod Instagram https://www.instagram.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Tik-Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@hiddenkillerspod X Twitter https://x.com/tonybpod Listen Ad-Free On Apple Podcasts Here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/true-crime-today-premium-plus-ad-free-advance-episode/id1705422872
