If you are not watching Doctor Odyssey, you need to start now. It is one of those shows that is so cheesy that it's good. It's a guilty pleasure show for sure and I love it. I wanted to choose this episode because it features special guest stars Kelsea Ballerini and Margo Martindale as mother and daughter. I wasn't prepared for what this podcast episode turned out to be. Just so you know, Doctor Odyssey is about Max, who is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore. It stars Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Son, Sean Teale, Don Johnson and features so many guest stars, like the modern day Love Boat. Check it out on Hulu or on ABC.The Midnight Scalpel (I asked ChatGPT):Ingredients2 oz Dark Rum (bold and brooding, like the doc himself)0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice (for a sharp, clinical edge)0.5 oz Ginger Syrup (zingy and exotic, just like the locales)1 dash of Angostura Bitters (adds complexity like a backstory)Splash of Activated Charcoal (for that inky, moody drama)Top with Club SodaGarnish: Thin cucumber ribbon & a metal cocktail pick (like a surgical tool)DirectionsShake rum, lime juice, ginger syrup, bitters, and charcoal with ice.Strain into a highball or Collins glass over fresh ice.Top with club soda for fizz and tension.Garnish with the cucumber ribbon and silver pick - because it's Dr. Max Bankman and he doesn't do basic. For a mocktail version called Code Black, replace the rum with black iced tea like Earl Grey or Lapsang and remove the bitters.Doctor Odyssey Drinking Game:Drink when...they are in the infirmary.you see a guest star.you see gold medical instruments.someone says "We're losing them!" or "I need ___ccs now!"their watch goes off.something super cheesy happens.sexual tension between any of the main characters.they have to resuscitate someone. the medical staff tries something new and risky to save a life.Take a shot when...someone goes overboard.you see a country superstar as a guest star.for a cliffhanger. As always, drink responsibly and with others. There were no movies starring the late Gene Hackman that were released in the US in 1999, but two of his films released in the US in 1998 – Tony Scott's Enemy of the State and Robert Benton's Twilight – were released in Europe in 1999. So because plenty has been said about the former, we are taking a look today at the latter. Directed by Kramer and Kramer writer and director Robert Benton and written by Benton and novelist Richard Russo, who also teamed up with star Paul Newman on 1994's adaptation of Russo's Nobody's Fool, Twilight stars Newman with a supporting cast of Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon, James Garner, Stockard Channing, Reese Witherspoon, Margo Martindale, John Spencer, Live Shrieber, the dying body of M. Emmet Walsh, and Giancarlo Esposito. Twilight was a box office failure and was met with a lukewarm reception by critics, but it is a very good case study in the question as to whether or not some actors - like Hackman - could be good in absolutely anything.
In movies like “Million Dollar Baby,” "August: Osage County,” “Blow The Man Down,” and series like "The Americans,” “Justified,” and “Sneaky Pete,” “esteemed character actress Margo Martindale” loves to play people much different from herself. And she's been so good at it for so long that she only started to get truly recognized for her work in her 60s. Three Emmys later, she's able to pick and choose what she wants to do. Her latest, the Amazon series “The Sticky,” finds her number one on the call sheet and having a blast playing the bombastic maple syrup farmer Ruth Landry. On this episode she explains why the first step in her preparation process is knowing where a character was born and raised. She talks about feeling most free when she's able to “play” like she did in her backyard, what makes Alexander Payne and Robert Benton great directors, why it took some time for her to settle in to sit-com acting, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Ed Herro. Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Ed fell in love with improv in middle school. He started doing comedy in college and moved to New York where he performed on house teams in the early days of UCB. Eventually realizing that one couldn't make a living yes and-ing, he became a touring stand-up and then a TV writer, writing on shows like Jeff & Some Aliens, American Housewife, and The Neighbors. Most recently, he created, with his writing partner Brian Donovan, the series The Sticky starring the incredible Margo Martindale, and it is airing now weekly on Amazon Prime!
Margo Martindale is no stranger to playing dangerous women, whether it be a KGB agent on “The Americans” or the matriarch of a crime family on “Justified.” She now turns her talents to another dangerous woman: Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer in rural Quebec who decides to pull an $18 million maple syrup heist in “The Sticky,” a new series based on a true story. She tells Tom Power about how she used her childhood in rural Texas to inspire her portrayal of Ruth and what it was like to speak French.
NBC News Medical Contributor Dr. Vin Gupta shares a checklist on how to recognize and reduce holiday stress on the body. After watching Prime Video's The Sticky, it became clear that the Margo Martindale praise needed to continue with some of her co-stars. Chris Diamantopoulos is one of the “cohorts” Margo spoke about in our chat, and he's fantastic in the Jamie Lee Curtis-produced series. Diamantopoulos plays Mike, one of the two men who help Martindale's Ruth in her illegal plot to “steal some maple syrup,” as Martindale says. And The Sticky is a culmination of a lot of impressive work in Diamantopoulos' career, who has played everything from Broadway to performances in films like The Boys in the Boat and Red Notice. (You need to watch him in Mrs. Davis.) (Oh, and you may even recognize his voice from his extensive voice work.) Diamantopoulos chats with Newsweek about The Sticky, why Margo Martindale is so great, and how The Sticky is a love letter to Canada (in its own special way). “Who knew that a barrel of maple syrup is worth more than a barrel of oil?” Margo Martindale does, after starring in The Sticky (December 6, Prime Video). The Emmy-winning actor plays Ruth Landry, a Canadian syrup farmer who resorts to crime after the government threatens to take away her livelihood. “It's very different, very fun and what an incredible subject.” Inspired by a true story and produced by Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis, Martindale's Ruth adds to a resume of unsuspecting yet extraordinary women. “The difference in this woman is that she starts at her most desperate. And that's fun.” And while “she does have her feet on the ground,” she's pushed to the limit and decides “to steal some maple syrup. It's so logical to me.” [laughs] Even though Martindale has mostly “taken the supporting role” over the course of her long and lauded career, The Sticky marks her first major starring role. But for her, it's about the work. “When I sit a long time, I go, ‘Why aren't my agents calling me? What's going on? Is something happening?' It never fails.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This very special Halloween episode delves into the story of two close-but-disparate sisters and how they found themselves shunned by their community because of their unusual background -- they were bitches who had either never before seen Practical Magic, or they thought it was silly, or both. Join us as we come to terms with every wild thing the beloved 1998 rom-com-fantasy-crime-drama-cult-classic-Margo-Martindale-vehicle Practical Magic stands for and find ourselves maybe grabbing our proverbial brooms to join the coven. Do we make ourselves as silly as the film we're discussing? At least. Are we able to keep down these midnight margaritas? Mostly. Will our listeners burn us at the stake for transgressing against the Owens women? Well, that's up to you.

This week, the guys discuss Ride With the Devil, a film quintessentially 90s but all about the battle between the North and South! Does this movie have the most obvious 1990s casting of all-time and/or is it secretly brilliant to cast Tobey in the role of a literal outsider? The guys also discuss the notion of having an outsider perspective on this war, the revenge subplot that is promptly dropped, a wild Brooklyn Nine-Nine theory and much more. Next week: rank 'em! Stir up that cauldron and bury your undead boyfriend as we cast ourselves into 1998's Practical Magic. Did you know the origins of our double titles come from a distinctly cartoony place? Will an argument over the attractiveness of Aiden Quinn finally tear us apart? Did they really need to cram this movie into a romcom box? And can we all at least agree that the Owens women inherited fantastic hair along with their man-killing curse? (Worth it.) One thing we can tell you is that we're feeling very into sisters right now.

Character actress Margo Martindale strikes again in this week's episode where we review "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story".
Based on a true story - sort of - this Elizabeth Banks-directed film bit off a chunk of the box office earlier this year. In the style of Snakes on a Plane and Sharknado, its absurd title promised campy animal chaos that audiences needed to see to believe. When a drug smuggler dumps kilos of Columbian cocaine on Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia, a bear then snorts the coke and goes on a bloody bender. Starring Keri Russell, Ray Liota, Margo Martindale, Isaiah Whitlock Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Alden Ehrenreich, O'Shea Jackson, some kids and a CGI black bear, the film packs in scares, gags, and gore into 90-minutes of drug-fueled ursine rampage. When the movie is called Cocaine Bear, you have to wonder if it's up to snuff or simply unbearable to watch. Nina, Eileen, Colleen, and Zach join Caitlin to cover 2023's Cocaine Bear. Before you side eye... she's a mama bear. A MONSTROUS mama bear! So we're counting it for monstrous motherhood. A seamless shoehorn into the Plug It Up repertoire of the monstrous feminine! We look back at our favorite scenes, recount our fun theater experience, "tag" ourselves as characters, and touch on other animal-horror favs. Tangents include: grabbing Colleen, chips, showers, SSRIs, kids, MLMs, comfort TV shows, and drunk personalities. I would be remiss if I didn't follow up: we found out that Zach DOES INDEED have a Capricorn moon. Colleen nailed it. The Zach/Colleen friendship was tested by both the Cocaine Bear movie and this episode recording, but they persevered. The Zach/Colleen leo/virgo alliance remains strong.

It wasn't supposed to be a music episode but its about as close to one as we've had in awhile. We talk about the new Metallica album 72 seasons. Metallica had a huge marketing campaign and push for this new album. Is it just capitalism or is the album a return to their ferocious metal past? The Foo Fighter's Studio 666 is a horror movie about the band holing up in a haunted mansion to record their 10th album. Demon possesion ensues and members of the band are dispatched in horrific ways. It came out over a year ago, but with the death of Taylor Hawkins Greg hesitated to review it. Paul and Erin review two films featuring gory bear attacks: our trash pick is COCAINE BEAR, and our art pick is the 2015 Leonardo DiCaprio adventure THE REVENANT.
Cocaine Bear never forgets his lines. Synopsis Cocaine Bear is loosely based on a true story of a bear that finds and consumes cocaine air dropped by a cocaine smuggler in 1985. In this movie, instead of dying immediately, it does what everyone imagines in their head when they hear the words “Cocaine Bear”. It goes on an unhinged coked up rampage across a state park. Along the way, Cocaine Bear's, or as his friends call him, Pablo Escobear, crosses paths with drug dealers, thugs, rangers, children, and a mom. These people fare about as well as you would expect against Cocaine Bear. Review of Cocaine Bear The movie is structured basically as a slasher in that the characters are mostly there as fodder, and they are all trying to escape an unhinged, all powerful killer. However, even for a slasher, these characters have super thin development. None of them have what I would call an “arc”. Not even Cocaine Bear. The cast is serviceable with Kari Russel, MArgo MArtindale, Ray Liotta (RIP), and a bunch of newcomers. They just aren't given much to work with. Really the most valuable and enjoyable thing that this movie gives you is the title. It's going to be talked about in knowing tones by the same people that mention Sharknado movies without having actually seen it. To it's credit, it doesn't shy away from the gore, and earns it's R rating, but doesn't go crazy. Overall, it's ok. There are enjoyable moments, and the concept is novel early on, but it loses it's edge very quickly and it becomes just a waiting game for the obvious ending. It's a B movie with a 35 million dollar budget. I didn't expect much, and it perfectly met my expectations Score 4/10
The gravitational pull of the viral marketing campaign for Cocaine Bear sucked us into the theaters. That title! That poster! The memes! This horror comedy is based on a true story of a bear that ate cocaine in the 1980s in the wilderness of Tennessee. Elizabeth Banks directed this movie with a solid cast of Keri Russell, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale, and Ray Liotta (Rest in Peace). But this crazy movie wasn't the barrel of laughs we were hoping for, at least amongst this Lodgecast crew. We'll let you know how quickly the drugs wore off in this coked-up hawt take!

From director Elizabeth Banks comes a romp through the woods of Blood Mountain, with a cast of fun actors (Margo Martindale! O'Shea Jackson Jr! Keri Russell! Isiah Whitlock, Jr!, the late, great Ray Liotta!) trying not to be mauled to death by a coke-addled black bear. And we've got The Flop House's Dan McCoy with us to pick up the bloody pieces. The boyz review Cocaine Bear, the new over-the-top action black comedy film directed by Elizabeth Banks.
This week the boys are joined by Ben Grimes, filmmaker and punk rocker who drinks Tequila drinks out of a Hydro Flask to keep it colder for longer and prevent the ice from melting LIKE A GENIUS AND A PRO. They discuss the new Elizabeth Banks-directed movie "18 Characters Develop Their Back Story in the Woods of Georgia". That's actually a Ben joke that we laughed at in the episode, we even laughed when John or he brought it back up later, but we all had a fun time in the theater, as did our audiences. So go see it. Or, if you don't, it'll be a rental in about a month, like M3GAN, also covered by us, which is not on Peacock literally the month after it came out in theaters. 2023, man. Anyway, just rent it at home in a month, pee during the back story parts, and have fun when the bear starts taking off limbs, because apparently all cocaine does to big animals is make them angry and possessed like a Floridian on bath salts cut with cocaine. Unlike me, who just talks really, really fast and gets really good at foosball and pool. Don't believe us? Follow us on the socials and reach out to us. A movie called Cocaine Bear needs two things: a bear, and some cocaine. Both are abundant in the new action comedy about a large quantity of cocaine that accidentally winds up deep in the Georgia forest. And who eats it? That's right: a bear. The movie was directed by Elizabeth Banks, and the cast includes Keri Russell, Ray Liotta, Margo Martindale, and O'Shea Jackson Jr.

This episode features Milton's conversation with his longtime friend, character actress Margo Martindale. Mostly recently, you might know her from The Watcher on Netflix, Bojack Horseman, Sneaky Pete and for her portrayal of Bella Abzug on the limited FX series Mrs. America. Margo won a Primetime Emmy and Critics Choice Award for her role as Mags Bennett on Justified; she then won two Emmys for playing a Russian spy on The Americans. Her movie credits include Dead Man Walking, Secretariat, Million Dollar Baby and August Osage County. In this conversation Margo shares how she works on material that lacks information about character and/or backstory, and talks about the importance of making a choice and committing to it. Not to be confused with Penny Marshall in "The Looker," this week we're discussing Ryan Murphy's loosely inspired by true events miniseries "The Watcher." We love the New Jersey of it all, how much fun Margo Martindale is having and the extent to which Mia Farrow and Noma Dumezweni got the assignment.
