To wrap up our episode cycle featuring "Off-Beat Musicals", Madeline, Julian and Emilio close in on a prolific songwriter whose career has notably dovetailed with film over the years: Paul Williams. An unconventional public figure with the gift of gab and an ear for making timeless music, Williams left his mark on the 1970s, penning memorable scores for some truly unique movie musicals. First, we cover 'Phantom of the Paradise', Brian De Palma's 1974 rock musical featuring Williams in a lead role, the nefarious music producer Swan whose deal with the devil sets the stage for a WILD mix of camp, vengeance, and glam rock swagger. Then there's 'Bugsy Malone', Alan Parker's 1976 gangster film satire with a cast of nothing but children, yet another wild ride of fun performances and some era-specific songs. And we wrap up the conversation with a look at 'The Muppet Movie' from 1979, one last off-beat musical featuring puppets with a witty script and several equally clever heartfelt tunes from Williams and collaborater Kenneth Ascher. It's an earnest look back on the work of one of the more influential songsmiths of his era, with an off-beat musical performance of our own just for kicks! We have a monthly newsletter! Episode 184: Some Of The Vinyl Goodies From 1969 Hello and welcome! It's another Tales Vinyl Tells, an excursion into the great album cuts of our vinyl records of the 60s & 70s. Today we're tuned into some of the 1969 releases that rocked and changed the consciousness of the world. Tommy, the Who's Rock Opera came out in 69. So did the Stones' Let It Bleed, Santana's first, The Stooges debuted with Iggy Pop and the first two Zeppelin LPs came out in that year. So did Abbey Road. And “The Band” LP, with Cripple Creek and The night they drove old dixie down. Yeh! It was a great musical year, 1969. I'm Brian Hallgren. I've been doing this podcast since December 2019 and the radio program since January of 2022. And here's today's episode, #184, exposing some of the Tales Vinyl Tells. Welcome to the camp. Thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. You can hear a Tales Vinyl Tells radio program when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org and here. We do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places. And of course you can count on hearing the Tales on studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells anytime.
Continuing with the cycle theme of “Offbeat Musicals”, Julian and Madeline draw from the conception of their friendship with a joint suggestion - Leos Carax's “Annette” (2021). Joining Emilio as a first-time viewer is actor and puppeteer Kelly Autry, a friend of Madeline's since tweendom. Our two seasoned Sparks fans share their background with the musical duo, who write and compose the music for this film, and try their best to initiate those who are new to the band's unique musical style. Although many may know “Annette” as “the Adam Driver puppet musical”, the group digs into themes of originality, self-sabotage, and the nature of performance. Their opinions of the film may vary, but the group agrees that “Annette” becomes richer with a discussion among friends, and in the value of “simple stories expressed unconventionally”, in the words of past guest Shaun Seneviratne.Kelly Autry is an actor, singer, dancer, and puppeteer, who can be seen performing around New York City. In May 1969, with the Who on the brink of bankruptcy, Pete Townshend decided to risk it all with an extremely ambitious project -- arguably the most ambitious undertaking in rock to that point -- a 4-sided rock opera about a sight and hearing-impaired young man named Tommy who becomes a kind of messiah figure. The album became a true sensation, especially after The Who performed it at Woodstock. It would end being adapted into a movie, a stage musical, and even a ballet by a Montreal dance troupe. And it would influence the course of rock that followed.
So it was exactly six years ago this month that primary SOS host Rudy Fischmann started work on an ill-advised project— a rock opera. It was ill-advised because Rudy is actually living with brain cancer, and lacks enough left hand coordination to actually play any instruments traditionally, nor the energy. Still, he's managed to pull it off with the help of 60 other people from 12 nations around the globe. It may not be major musical history, but it's an absolute first of its kind. So minor music history? The whole thing serves as a fundraiser for two great cancer charities… both very closely associated with rock opera kings The Who. We're talking about Teen Cancer America and the Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK. So check out this podcast to learn more about this big, dumb idea that became a brilliant reality, and some of the people who helped make it possible. To learn more specifics on the rock opera and its fundraising component, visit: https://www.episode18.com It's simple, really: the music is free, but make a donation to either charity and you're entitled (if you want) to digital downloads, a printed booklet of liner notes, and a lyric/story script. Rudy's not looking to fill your life with clutter... just to get you to take a listen to his music, and for you to share some love with teens going through cancer. All music is available on most music streaming apps and YouTube. Just search for “Episode 18” by That Cancer Life. Get to know your new music-obsessed friends in Rudy Fischmann's fascinating podcast-within-a-podcast, The Discograffiti Soldiers Of Sound Podcast, created exclusively by & for Discograffiti's Patreon "Soldiers of Sound" community, where you get to be the guest! In this episode, author and psychoanalyst Graeme Daniels reads from his 2019 book, The Psychology of Tommy, about the famous 1969 rock opera, providing a social surround of its era, including the backdrop of post-WWII Britain, plus of an overview of relevant attachment theory that have informed interpretations of Tommy.

The production contains 12 songs by Forgive Durden, performed live, with a new cast of puppet characters ranging in size from two to eight feet. The show runs April 10–25 at the Hive Collaborative in St. Paul. In-person and live-streamed tickets are available. While not designed as a children's show, Anderson says the show is recommended for ages six and older due to a few spooky elements; if your child enjoys Tim Burton's film “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” this show should be a good fit.Having seen all Phantom Chorus's productions for the past three years, Anderson raves about them.Azure says: “The visuals are always incredible. This year's theme is “Making Through the Decades.” Frocktails takes place 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, April 11 at Steady Pour in Minneapolis.Hannah describes the vibe of the first Frocktails in 2024.Hannah says: There's something so uniquely wonderful about being in a room with people who've made at least one part of their outfit and can really speak the same language as you do. And so, I remember walking around with my bingo sheet and getting to know people and where they're from. They're asking you about your outfit, and you're asking them about their outfit. And so by the end of the night, you're saying goodbye to all these people that you've really never met before, but now, you're finding ways to keep in touch. I think that's something that's so beautiful about Frocktails and about sewing, specifically, that I don't think I've been able to find anywhere else.— Hannah OlanrewajuPoetry and community in RochesterJohn Sievers is a trombonist from Rochester, but tonight, he's looking forward to an event that celebrates poetry. RHLSTP Book Club #163 - Lost On Infinity - Richard talks to Steve Punt about the book and incredible multi-media experience that he has created (along with Elaine and Matthew Sweetapple), Lost On Infinity. They have a long chat about Steve's Benjamin Button career from starting on BBC1 on the Jasper Carrott show to 26 years on the Now Show, the lessons that the rollercoaster of Weekending taught them both and whether Eric Idle might be Steve's dad. Then they discuss the long gestation period of the book and the rock opera and why it was important that for all the magic of the writing that the project was scientific, how it manages to make points about the environment and extinction without detracting from the story, whether it would be preferable to live in a world without dogs or without humans, why the ultimate goal is to create a work that can be enjoyed by all members of a family and why it's good to use language and music that pushes the reader of listener and doesn't patronise them.Buy the book here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Infinity-creatures-incredible-dramatised/dp/1739263065Find out more about Rockford's Rock Opera at RockfordsRockOpera.comSUPPORT THE SHOW!See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. TrulySignificant.com talks to the creators of the rock opera- A Man of Fortune. The team of Wooten, Murphy, and Clark debut the rock opera, “A Man of Fortune,” The opera is a passion project 50 years in the making - Originally conceived by Jeff Clark (formerly of Austin-based 70s rock band Too Smooth) in the 1970s and early 1980s, “A Man of Fortune” began as a deeply personal songwriting endeavor, telling the story of performer Max Million, who, at the height of his career, meets event coordinator Lisa. Their brief but meaningful encounter sparks a journey of self-discovery for Max after he collapses during the encore and is hospitalized. Clark tapped his friend Brian Wooten, (who has played with White Heart and currently plays with Trace Adkins), to produce and play guitar on the opera and Darin Murphy, (a staple in the Austin music scene with credits that include Skyrocket, Lennon (Musical on Broadway), HeartByrne, Pepperland Players work with Todd Rundgren and Christopher Cross) to sing and embody the role of Max Million on the opera.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Will Toledo, vocalist for Seattle-based Car Seat Headrest, wanted the band’s latest release to be a concept album in the tradition of a rock opera. The Scholars delivers just that: strong storytelling within each of its nine tracks, inventing characters in a “fictional America,” attesting to the human search for meaning inside and outside of ourselves. Toledo stopped by KEXP earlier this year to speak with Midday Host Cheryl Waters. He opens up about going back on tour after suffering from the effects of long COVID and the album's collaborative songwriting process. “There’s only so much you can say about yourself before it stops getting interesting,” Toledo says in the interview. “Having this concept of characters helped a lot. It’s me giving a sincere portrait of someone I can relate to rather than it being me.” Car Seat Headrest is one of the headlining bands at Bumbershoot 2025, taking place August 30 and 31 at Seattle Center. When you think about the Columbia Gorge, a multimedia rock opera might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But that’s exactly the vehicle producer Sarah Fox chose to showcase the unique history, personal stories and ecology of the Gorge. “The Watershed Rock Opera” unfolds in five movements that symbolize the cycle of the watershed itself. The journey starts in the clouds, descends into the Cascades and moves through a pear orchard before it ends in a kind of homecoming at the mighty river that connects the people and communities who call the Gorge home. (There’s also a comedic detour and duet prompted by a clogged toilet). Fox recorded interviews with five storytellers who provided the narration in the rock opera and inspired its musical score, which 20 local musicians and performers will bring to life this Friday for a series of sold-out shows at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River. Fox joins us for more details, along with Lesley Tamura, a fourth-generation pear orchardist in Hood River, composer and arranger Eric Kaneda and music director and percussionist Leila Kaneda.
Things get real juicy in this episode as we dive into the cult classic Repo! The Genetic Opera—and surprise, surprise… one of us forgot how much they hate it.

PEI author Steven Mayoff's newest book, The Island Gospel According to Samson Grief (Radiant Press, 2023) masterfully disrupts the idyllic picture often painted of Prince Edward Island. This is a darkly funny and thrilling story of spiritual dissonance and cultural satire in Canada's most wholesome province. Samson Grief, a reclusive painter from Prince Edward Island, is confronted by three red-haired figments of his imagination in the form of Judas Iscariot, Fagin, and Shylock. They claim to be messengers of “The Supreme One”, a genderless deity who has decreed PEI to be the new Promised Land, who also wants Samson to build the Island's first synagogue. Scared, confused, and seriously doubting his sanity, Samson eventually, though grudgingly, accepts the challenge amid increasingly bizarre obstacles in a new dystopian world. About Steven Mayoff: Steven Mayoff (he/him) was born in Montreal and moved to Prince Edward Island in 2001. His books include the story collection Fatted Calf Blues (Turnstone Press, 2009), the novel Our Lady of Steerage (Bunim & Bannigan, 2015), the poetry chapbook Leonard's Flat (Grey Borders Books, 2018), the poetry collection Swinging Between Water and Stone (Guernica Editions, 2019) and the novel The Island Gospel According to Samson Grief (Radiant Press, 2023). As a lyricist, he has collaborated with composer Ted Dykstra on Dion a Rock Opera, which will receive its world premiere at the Coal Mine Theatre in Toronto in February 2024. We talk to our friends Matthew and Elaine Sweetapple, the Creators of Lost on Infinity by Rockford's Rock Opera, and we play the first episode of their story which now features in their Stories, Science and Secrets Podcast. The musical story of a dog called Rockford who travels to an island of extinct animals has been on our website for many years and is very popular. The new podcast reveals the science secrets behind the story.
This is a story about an old friend of ours. His name is Birdy. He's a crow who has lived for hundreds of years and known all sorts of important people, including kings and queens. In this story Birdy tells Jake that dinosaurs are not necessarily extinct. Birds, for example, are closely related to dinosaurs, and it's just possible that he and his sister might meet one or two.... The Osmonds reached what was arguably the peak of their fame in 1973. That year, the band made what many considered an interesting decision and released “The Plan,” a landmark album that explored the eternal nature of God's plan and the role of Jesus Christ in salvation. Alan Osmond almost always sang backup vocals but, as the oldest of the Osmond brothers, was in many ways the leader of the brothers' group and the writer of many of the Osmonds' songs. In this episode, Alan shares the inspiration behind “The Plan” as we celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the album. “We're not ashamed of the gospel and that's why I just can't be quiet about it.” Show Notes 1:46- Beginnings8:10- Sharing the Gospel Through Music14:31- A Rock Opera 28:06- Osmondmania34:59- Support of the Church41:48- Multiple Sclerosis47:51- Elvis and the Queen49:57- What Does It Mean to Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ?
