On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell begin their dive down the complex rabbit hole that is the Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci case.  Sara Lynn was killed on the evening of May 20, 2015, outside of Charleston, South Carolina, at a jewelry warehouse she owned with her husband, Michael Colucci. She died by asphyxiation mere feet from Michael, who said he was waiting in the car for her to use the restroom. Michael Colucci contends that Sara Lynn took her own life or … barring that … she tripped and fell into the loops of an industrial garden hose and accidentally hung herself.  When first-responders arrived at the scene, they found Sara Lynn's body already cold to the touch and Michael with scratches on his body and a fat and bloody lip, which he says he got from giving Sara Lynn CPR. In 2018, Michael was tried for her murder but that case ended in a mistrial. Now, as the prosecution and defense gear up for a May 13, 2024, retrial, Mandy and Liz break down what went wrong six years ago and the story of Sara Lynn and Michael that the jury should have heard back then.   We'll also hear from speakers at the Victims Matter Rally like David Pascoe, Carl Smalls Sr. and Sarah Ford plus a special message from Sandy Smith on her experiences at the rally... Typically whenever we go out of town some sort of breaking news happens – as it did this weekend... Thrice accused rapist Bowen Turner was arrested AGAIN – this time by the highway patrol. We will talk about this in more detail on True Sunlight, but Turner was arrested Saturday on charges of DUI, open container, public disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Bowen was just released from prison in November. He couldn't make it 6 months without getting in trouble again. We have been told he was in a single car accident and THANKFULLY no one was hurt.  Our bigger mission is to get Stephen Smith's case to a place of solvability, but day to day, our goals are much smaller and much more focused on the tiniest of details. As Eric puts it, Liz and Mandy are pulling at the edges of this case in the hopes of finding more dots that can be connected by law enforcement. And so far it's working. So far we're finding new details and when you don't have answers, every detail matters.  That's why it's so important that law enforcement continues to throw every resource they can at Stephen's case right now. Yes, there are a ton of other cases out that deserve the attention of SLED and the AG's office, but Stephen's case is not only about finding out who killed him … it's about a system that needs to redeem itself... for the victims and to the public.  Also on the show today, we talk about a decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court that is long overdue. The decision sets a new standard for the release of police records — specifically the case files from crimes that are technically still open because they haven't been solved. As Eric says, it was a good day for justice. We also discuss a new case the LunaShark team is taking on — the Sara-Lynn Colucci case. Her very first feature was her own house, and from there she was able to establish a relationship with that editor so her client work could be featured as well. And how did she do that? By making it very easy for the editor to work with her. She keeps in touch with editors to foster a relationship, and she lets them in early in the process, sharing vision boards so they know what she’s working on for their upcoming editorial calendars. How does getting published change things? The short answer from Sara is that it doesn’t. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t been good for business, but she says she hasn’t seen any clients come through her door saying, “I saw you featured in this magazine.” But the benefits go beyond direct client bookings. For instance, Sara throws events in her hometown, so people can “meet the designer” who has just been featured in a magazine. And getting into magazines has helped her establish her aesthetic in a clear and easy-to-communicate way.
