2/18/22 How we are taking our gut seriously in 2022 In this episode Nicole reveals to us she has now become part of the ex-plant community. After years of having breast implants she has taken the decision to have them removed. Listen to a brief description of why she did it and expect her to delight us with many episodes related to how she helped her healing and moved along her recovery. As well as how she is focusing on amping up her detoxification systems through the year 2022. Erika shares the 3 things (sleep, lower back stenosis, enhancing labs) she will focus on “biohacking” this year. The beauty in the upcoming year is that we will see how interrelated our systems are. Even though the focus of each of the podcasters is completely different there will be many techniques/methods used that will overlap. The year will bring more guests that are experts in the field, client testimonials, as well as testimonials from people that have or currently are struggling with these issues and how they are addressing them We look forward to sharing all of this with oyu this year and are so grateful you are along for the ride. J found his way to health and nutrition through some unlikely channels. He has a degree from Berklee in Music Production & Engineering but always had a love of sports in his background. He became an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer with a specialty in Fitness Nutrition and developed an obsession with longevity and optimal health. Always willing to challenge even his own beliefs in favor of an evidence based approach, he started down the rabbit hole that is nutrition. Reading dozens of book, attending conferences, partnering with MDs, PhDs and engineers alike he found that not only was his approach to nutrition founded on incomplete science but that the standard approach to nutrition veered off course decades ago. His passion led him to the Nutritional Therapy Association where he graduated as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. At NTA they take a bio individual approach to nutrition that goes far beyond recommending macronutrient ratios. As a nutritional therapy practitioner J has found a way to examine the impact of far more than just food. With a focus on digestion, fatty acids, hydration, minerals and blood sugar, the approach is complete and considers all systems of the body and how they work synergistically. He is now finishing a master's program in clinical human nutrition and is currently working with doctors and nurses at a hospital in New York City on how to improve nutrition, sleep, stress management and a host of other lifestyle interventions centered on human performance and longevity. His independent research focuses on nutrition seen through an evolutionary/ancestral lens. He also still finds time to climb mountains, run races and challenge himself physically at every turn. His evolving knowledge of nutrition as not only fuel for the body but also as a therapeutic tool allows him to help others perform and live optimally. Find J on Instagram at @Perpetualhealthco

Avoiding processed foods in our current societal model is impossible for most people. The few that are able and knowledgeable enough to grow their own foods are still, generally, unable to grow everything they require to sustain a healthy & complete diet. And while that should not discourage anyone from attempting to grow the most food they can, it does require us to consider what kind of processed foods we should eat, if any and are all processed foods bad for us?
Sleep disorders are way too common nowadays. Our lifestyles complicate this issue and we are left baffled as to how to fix it. Long work hours, traveling across countries or the globe, lack of exposure to the sun, nighttime work shifts, poor eating schedules, and improper lighting are just the tip of the iceberg on what disturbs our sleep. In the US alone there is an estimated 70 million people suffering with at least one sleep disorder and that seems to be a conservative number because it is believed up to 80% of sleep disorders are going undecided or undiagnosed. Comorbidities not only complicates the treatment of sleep disorders but it also requires specialty doctors to work together, not a strong suit for our current medical model.
Our medical system is broken. We often talk about the Standard American Diet (SAD) and how it is a disservice to our health but the buck does not stop there. The Standard American Disease Treatment, I just coined that term to relate it to the acronym of the SAD it's not a thing yet, but how we treat chronic disease in this country falls just as short and solidifies the consequences that come from the SAD. Our healthcare system is a mirror image of our health. When we talk about our healthcare systems being broken the reason is that our health is broken as well, our food system is broken, and our products are filled with toxins. When a person suffers from any chronic disease (ie diabetes, cardiovascular problems=HBP, hypertension, cholesterol issues that lead to plaque build-up, asthma, Ulcerative Colitis, IBS, arthritis, RA, etc) the standard model of medicine does not look at the cause of any of these. When a doctor treats your chronic illness what they are doing is treating symptoms of a disease. The treatments offered by our standard western medical care do not heal or reverse the disease because those are not the diseases but in fact only the symptoms of the actual disease, metabolic imbalance. Find Nicole Carter at www.healthywithnicole.com Find Erika Smith at www.keepinitrealcoaching.com Find Anais on Instangram at @cookwithanais or www.cookwithanais.podia.com Welcome back everyone! We're doing something a little different today. Today we have a guest on our podcast today and we are super excited to share this with each and everyone of you. Part of our journey in this world, for both Nicole and I, is being able to be a mother. We each have two children and they are all in very different stages of life. Our guest today shares this trait as she is also a mother. As we go through this podcast my hope is that we learn a little bit more about how others are providing gut health knowledge and benefits to our children and also to give the listeners the opportunity to listen in on different approaches to this to determine how you want to do it in your own household. One of the things I ponder is as parents, do we hold a duty to our children to give them the best opportunity at life not only on an educational basis but more so giving them their best health. Because what are they without good health but a burden to society with a shortened lifespan and limited ability to achieve their own personal greatness. Without further a do… Today's guess is named Anais. Anais is of Mexican and Cuban descent, she is married, has three children; two of which are twins. Although her pregnancies were so close together I consider them triplets.
Ready for some gut health coaching? Find Nicole Carter at www.healthywithnicole.com Find Erika Smith at www.keepinitrealcoaching.com Excerpt: Long-term dietary habits play a crucial role in creating a host-specific gut microbiota community in humans. Despite the many publications about the effects of carbohydrates (prebiotic fibers), the impact of dietary fats, such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), on the gut microbiota is less well defined. The few studies completed in adults showed some common changes in the gut microbiota after omega-3 PUFA supplementation. In particular, a decrease in Faecalibacterium, often associated with an increase in the Bacteroidetes and butyrate-producing bacteria belonging to the Lachnospiraceae family, has been observed. Coincidentally, a dysbiosis of these taxa is found in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Omega-3 PUFAs can exert a positive action by reverting the microbiota composition in these diseases, and increase the production of anti-inflammatory compounds, like short-chain fatty acids. In addition, accumulating evidence in animal model studies indicates that the interplay between gut microbiota, omega-3 fatty acids, and immunity helps to maintain the intestinal wall integrity and interacts with host immune cells. Finally, human and animal studies have highlighted the ability of omega-3 PUFAs to influence the gut-brain axis, acting through gut microbiota composition. From these findings, the importance of the omega-3 connection to the microbiota emerges, encouraging further studies. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29215589/ PUFAS and Alzheimers/Parkinsons http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/fats-functions-malfunctions.shtml https://lindsayfuce.com/what-are-pufas/
GUT HEALTH & MOVEMENT What is considered movement? Things that increase your heart rate, develop muscle growth or maintenance, use glucose in your blood. Physical activity is a movement that is carried out by the skeletal muscles that require energy. In other words, any movement one does is actually physical activity. Exercise, however, is planned, a structured, repetitive, and intentional movement intended to improve or maintain physical fitness. Exercise is a subcategory of physical activity. All physical activity promotes healthier well-being but exercise will additionally improve your cardiorespiratory function, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and your body composition(ie: body fat percentages, visceral fat, muscle: body fat percentages). Why is movement important? In research studies, the physically active mice contained more Lactobacillales bacteria which, in conjunction with Bifidobacterium, has been known to enhance nutrient absorption, lower cholesterol levels, prevent heart disease, and exert an anti-inflammatory response and while we might not understand how and why this happens the evidence of it happening is clear and overwhelming. It also helps with stress and when we control stress we aid in cortisol controls that will reduce our risk of weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease among others. What can/do we do to achieve that? 30 minutes of daily exercise is the recommendation. These do not have to be done consecutively. In fact, I encourage breaking these up, especially when you are starting to introduce movement into your life/routine. Schedule your exercise. We have phones, use them to your advantage! Schedule alarms to go off and remind you to exercise.
