What is the keto diet? The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet which allegedly helps weight loss and fighting diseases such as diabetes, epilepsy, Alzheimer's and cancer. This diet is growing in popularity, but not without its risks.  The idea is simple enough. Fats, proteins and carbohydrates are the macronutrients that make up the major part of our diets. With the keto diet, you drastically reduce the amount of one of those three groups. Carbs are more or less banned. To make up for that, you consume fats in larger quantities, as much as 90% of your daily energy intake. So say goodbye to cakes, cereals and bananas; hello to butter, meat, avocado and vegetable oils. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Gary Taubes on Rethinking Diabetes: Diet, Insulin, and the History Behind Low-Carb Treatment: Journalist Gary Taubes is author of “Rethinking Diabetes: What Science Reveals About Diet, Insulin, and Successful Treatments.” The book traces diabetes treatment history and argues that carbohydrate restriction was standard care from 1797 through the early 20th century until insulin therapy shifted practice toward drug-centered management and higher-carbohydrate diets. Taubes explains how insulin's discovery changed dietary priorities, how later technology (radioimmunoassay) revealed that most diabetes is type 2 with insulin resistance and high insulin rather than deficiency, and why giving more insulin can worsen weight gain. They discuss major trials (including ACCORD, ADVANCE, and Look AHEAD) that failed to show benefits from intensive drug-based glucose control, the influence of low-fat guidelines, Richard Bernstein's role in blood-glucose self-monitoring and low-carb control, controversies about obesity models, ketosis vs ketoacidosis, GLP-1 drugs, and LDL increases on ketogenic diets.

Ever heard someone rave about the keto diet like it's the best thing since sliced bread? That's exactly what sparked this episode, after overhearing two blokes in the sauna going all-in on the "magic" of ketosis, we thought… right, let's talk about this properly. In this episode, we break down what the keto diet actually is, what it means to be in ketosis, and whether it really lives up to the hype. No extremes, no scaremongering. Just an honest conversation, between two Personal Trainers who work with real people every day. So this is all about practical experience, what we've seen work (and not work), and helping you cut through the noise to make better decisions for yourself. No magic. No miracles. Just real talk.

How Continuous Glucose Monitors Can Optimize Metabolic Health—and Where GLP-1 Drugs Fit: Emergency physician-turned-preventive/metabolic medicine specialist Dr. Paul Kolodzik of Metabolic MD reveals how continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are a tool not only for diabetics but also for non-diabetics and pre-diabetics to personalize diet, sleep, and exercise by seeing real-time glucose patterns instead of relying on fingersticks or A1c averages. Kolodzik describes CGM use in his clinic (two-week diagnostic wear, then therapeutic guidance), highlights insulin resistance, fasting insulin testing, glucose variability, and the role of low-carb eating, intermittent fasting, and strength training to improve metabolic syndrome, triglycerides, and fatty liver. They discuss CGM sourcing/cost, device mechanics and accuracy, possible future noninvasive wearables, and GLP-1/GIP weight-loss drugs, emphasizing supervised, limited-dose use with protein and lifestyle changes to avoid muscle loss and weight regain. Can a ketogenic diet improve mental health? This week marks a significant moment for metabolic psychiatry and ketogenic therapy for serious mental illness.A New York Times piece highlighted early research from Stanford University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Edinburgh—alongside stories from individuals who have shared their lived experience here on Metabolic Mind. This kind of visibility matters. It reflects years of work by researchers and clinicians like Drs. Chris Palmer, Shebani Sethi, and Iain Campbell, research funded by Baszucki Group, advocates like Jan Baszucki, as well as the many people who have been willing to share their personal stories.Lived experience alone isn't enough. Early data alone isn't enough. But together, they point to something that must be tested, confirmed — or challenged — through high-quality science. That's why we are excited about several RCTs currently completed or underway around the world. We need to continue efforts to advance education, public awareness and research on a scale that will require public funding. That's how medicine moves forward. And that's the exciting work ahead.

For example ketones can be elevated by very long fasting, starvation, different illnesses and uncontrolled diabetes.   Keto Claim: By minimizing carbs keto stabilizes blood sugar, reduce insulin spikes, and improve insulin sensitivity that benefits those with type 2 diabetes Debunked: This claim contradicts the evidence of induced hepatic insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in longer-term studies. In animal models, keto diets impair blood sugar regulation within several days, which shows harm for metabolic health.   Keto Claim: Ketones are seen as “clean” fuel that advocates claim are anti inflammatory and neuroprotective. Believe that this along with ketosis lowers triglycerides, raises HDL cholesterol, and improves lipid profiles. They argue that the increase in LDL cholesterol is benign. Claim saturated fats are harmless if carbs are low Debunked:  This claim is undermined by the increased LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and cardiovascular risks from saturated fats in animal products. Meta-analyses show no long-term lipid improvements from keto diets. Rather this is the risk in elevated low-density lipoprotein and very-low-density lipoproteins that increase cardiovascular disease  Also, insulin reduction does not override the quality of fat. LDL cholesterol and ApoB, as well as atherosclerosis, increase significantly on an animal based diet. Saturated fat still remains a causal factor for cardiovascular disease.   Keto Claim: High protein and fat increases satiety and therefore reduces hunger Debunking: Weight loss is primarily from reduced intake due to satiety, not fat-burning efficiency. Long-term keto adherence often leads to weight regain with no significant sustained benefits for visceral fat or appetite control. hort term weight loss is not same as long term benefits. A study shows that weight loss at 3-6 months on a keto diet disappears by 12 months   Keto Claim: It enhances brain function and energy that then improves mental clarity and mood. Argue that animal products like eggs and organ meats provides choline and other nutrients for brain health. Debunked: There is no strong evidence for this claim. In fact keto's nutrient deficiencies and lack of fiber in the long term can lead to fatigue, constipation and in women neural tubal defects. Keto's claims are only based on short term trials.    Keto Claim: Use the evolutionary argument that humans evolved eating meat and fat – same argument the paleo folks used. Therefore, they believe keto diets align with human biology Debunked: A big study in Science in 2025 analyzed tooth enamel from skeletons of some of our oldest human ancestors, 3.5 million years ago, and found they ate predominately a plant based diet with no substantial sigh of mammalian meat. The isotopes matched herbivores (fruits, leaves and grasses, tubers, nuts, other vegetation) not carnivores.     Keto Diet Risks   It is worth noting, according to the Northwestern University Health site, there is a sizable drop out rate of participants in keto trials.   Although, there are studies that show keto does what it claims in the short term, there are no long-term human data to support their claims that an animal-based diet does this efficiently.   Important, research leans in the direction to indicate that keto's benefits – especially weight loss and glucose reduction, are transient and may not be directly related to animal food consumption itself but rather to calorie reduction and limiting glycogen.   Long term prospective studies and systematic meta analysis evaluations consistently show high red meat consumption, full-fat dairy and animal fats are associated with the following medical conditions. This is true even when carbohydrate intake is low   A good thorough study in JAMA shows that unprocessed red meat mildly increases all cause mortality – about 3-5% per 100 grams meat per day   High red and processed meat consumption increases carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds and heterocyclic amines that raise cancer risks by up to 18% per 50-100 grams/day – from meta analysis in the European Journal of Epidemiology   Dairy increases IGF-1 levels thereby too much calcium also suppressing Vitamin D and elevating prostate cancer risks by 79% per 400 gram dairy per day. Worse for processed meats that inreases risk by 21% per 20 grams/day – American Journal of Epidemiology   Red meat is linked to hormonal disruptions and carcinogens contributing breast cancer – European Journal of Cancer   Total unprocessed red meat consumption shows a modest 5% risk in pancreatic cancer per 100 grams/day. – From journal Clinical Nutrition   Many meta-analyses on meats have a relationship to stomach/gastric cancer, but processed meats are worse than unprocessed red meat. From study in Nutrients – 24 studies showed unprocessed red meat associated with gastric cancer by about 25% increase risk for every 100 grams/day.   Unprocessed red meat is linked to an 11% higher risk in overall cardiovascular disease risk due to inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. – from European Heart Journal   Saturated fats in meats increases non-HDL cholesterol and blood pressure and raises the risks of ischemic heart disease by 119% per 100 grams/day red meat – from American J Clinical Nutrition   Red meat diets reduce LDL Cholesterol much less than plant proteins and thereby increase atherosclerosis risks – from the journal Circulation   Red meats (an processed meats also in this study) contributes to insulin resistance via heme iron and raises Type 2 diabetes risks by up to 51% per 50 grams/day – International Journal Environmental Research in Public Health   Saturated fats in unprocessed red meat has a modest positive 12% increase with stroke risk – From  European Heart Journal Unprocessed poultry consumption shows a modest 4% increase in incident cardiovascular events per 100 grams/day. This is believed to be due to arachidonic acid poultry – in JAMA   Red meat contributes to sodium and saturated fat intact raising hypertension conditions by 14% per 50-100 gram/day – from journal Advanced Nutrition   Saturated fats from animal products cause lipotoxicity and insulin resistance, that promotes hepatic fat accumulation leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease – from Cardiovascular Development and Disease   High animal protein increases urinary calcium and acid overload leading to the formation of kidney stones – from the journal Nutrient   Animal-heavy diets have low fiber and micronutrient intake that contribute to nutrient deficiencies. Also causes constipation that can lead to immune system issues. – from the journal Nutrients   Red meat, dairy, and eggs disrupts the gut metabolism of carnitine and choline. This promotes TMAO plaque formation and inflammation that leads to atherosclerosis. – from Journal of Cardiovascular Development.   Although unprocessed meat consumption has not been adequately associated with dementia and Alzheimer's – yes, processed meats do – there are studies showing red meat is associated with “subjective cognitive decline” (SCD) which is related to precursors to dementia and Alzheimer's. A study in journal Neurology  links unprocessed red meat eaten at 1 or more servings per day to 16% higher risk in SCD.   High caloric density from saturated animal fats displaces fiber that contributes to weight gain obesity. From Neal Barnard in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition   Animal products transmit prions that are associated with neurodegenerative disorders.  Proinflammatory compounds like TMAO are linked to neurological risks. – in International Journal of Molecular Science

In this episode, Rip sits down with Jet, a 66-year-old husband, father, hiker, and former keto devotee whose health collapsed despite doing “everything right” according to low-carb gurus. After a terrifying calcium score, debilitating angina, and near-widowmaker blockage, Jet found himself out of breath, unable to hike his favorite mountains, and feeling an impending sense of doom.A reunion — and one shocking scar from a friend's open-heart surgery — jolted him into action. Jet pivoted from years of high-fat keto eating to a whole-food, plant-based, SOS-free lifestyle inspired by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Within weeks, his symptoms vanished. Within months, he was summiting mountains he hadn't touched in over a decade. Today, his cholesterol is stellar, his A1C is normal, and he's hiking peaks he hasn't done in years.Jet's story is an inspiring reminder that the body can heal when given the right fuel — and that it's never too late to turn your life around.Key Topics Covered:Growing up in the Philippines on a fat and sugar-heavy dietThe moment Jet realized keto was harming — not helping — his heartHow a reunion wake-up call shifted his perspectiveThe emotional and physical toll of worsening symptomsWhy he finally chose a whole-food, plant-based lifestyleThe shocking improvements in angina, energy, cholesterol, sleep, and moodHis new life of hiking, strength, and vitality at 66Advice for anyone curious but hesitant to go plant-basedEpisode WebpageWatch the Episode on YouTubeLearn More About our 2026 Live PLANTSTRONG Events: https://plantstrong.com/pages/events Let Us Help Your PLANTSTRONG JourneyLearn More About Our Corporate Wellness Program: https://liveplantstrong.com/corporate-wellness/ COMPLEMENT: Use code PLANTSTRONG for 30% off at https://lovecomplement.com/pages/plantstrong-special-offer Follow PLANTSTRONG and Rip Esselstynhttps://plantstrong.com/ https://www.facebook.com/GoPlantstrong https://www.instagram.com/goplantstrong/https://www.instagram.com/ripesselstyn/ Follow the PLANTSTRONG Podcast and Give the Show a 5-star RatingApple PodcastsSpotify

A ketogenic diet improves weight loss, insulin sensitivity, and blood sugar control initially, but these gains typically level off after six to 12 months of adherence Long-term keto can elevate low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, particularly during rapid weight loss, raising cardiovascular concerns especially in healthy young adults following this diet Restricting carbohydrates eliminates healthy fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, leading to deficiencies in essential vitamins (B-complex, A, E, K) and minerals like magnesium and potassium Extended ketogenic diet use increases risks of kidney stones, reduced bone mineral density, thyroid dysfunction, and harmful gut microbiome changes linked to cancer risk The keto diet works better as a short-term therapeutic strategy for metabolic inflexibility and diabetes, but requires transitioning to balanced carbohydrate intake for long-term health

On today's Good Day Health Show - ON DEMAND…Dr. Jack Stockwell, a NUCCA Chiropractor and GAPS Practitioner in SLC, UT (866.867.5070 | ForbiddenDoctor.com | JackStockwell.com), covers the the biggest news in the health and wellness space from a holistic, naturopath perspective. In this episode, Dr. Jack starts with the holiday season and holiday buying. Eating single ingredients (real whole foods) is one of the best things you can do for your body. Avoid ultraprocessed food products, which are always a combination of inflammatory seed oil, sugar, denatured grains, preservatives, and fillers. Then, Dr. Jack discusses Keto products, and something to keep in mind about eggs and natural flavors. One of the least nutritious foods would be breakfast cereals, even “Keto” ones. If you have to, or insist, on having breakfast cereal in your pantry, find one where sugar is not one of the first 3 listed ingredients. Good luck. Just because something is labeled Keto, doesn't mean it's actually healthy. Lastly, Doug and Dr. Jack join together to answer listener questions, including how aspirin's affect developing brains, a link between longterm melatonin use and heart issues, as well as what supplements and nutrients you can add to your over-the-counter (OTC) lineup that will actually help and not cover up issues or cause more issues because they were solely created in a lab and have nothing to do with what nature provides. Website: GoodDayHealthrShow.com Social Media: @GoodDayNetworks

Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 11-13-2025: Dr. Dawn discusses a New England Journal of Medicine study examining radiation exposure from medical imaging in over 4 million children showing increased hematological cancer risk. Head and brain CTs deliver highest bone marrow doses, with under-1-year-olds receiving 20 milligrays compared to background radiation of 1 milligray yearly. The study found 3,000 cancers in 4 million children over roughly 10 years, with relative risk increasing 1.6-fold per CT scan. However, methodological flaws include combining US and Canadian cohorts with different data quality, potential reverse causation where imaging detected pre-existing cancers, and arbitrary 6-month latency assumptions are significant flaws in this study.. Despite small absolute risk increases given low baseline cancer rates, she encourages parents to question necessity of repeat scans and request alternatives like MRI when appropriate. She reports on cutting-edge CRISPR therapy using lipid nanoparticles to deliver molecular scissors targeting the ANGPTL3 gene controlling LDL cholesterol production. Recent setbacks in several other CRISPR trials raise issues for unexplained liver toxicity. Concerns include off-target gene editing effects and partially repaired DNA creating mutated proteins triggering autoimmune reactions. Dr. Dawn emphasizes restricting gene therapy to life-threatening genetic diseases with no alternatives until safety improves. Stanford scientists used AI model Evo trained on 9 trillion gene samples to design 300 new bacteriophages from scratch, with 16 phages successfully killing E. coli bacteria. AI tools now predict protein structures, design custom drugs, create antivenoms, invent antibiotics, and break down PFAS forever chemicals. The research represents evolution through computation and requires guardrails on AI's ability to manipulate biological structures. An emailer shares the Rosencare model where hotel chain owner Harris Rosen created self-insured health coverage featuring direct provider contracting, imaging facilities charging one-third to one-half traditional costs, transparent pharmacy benefit management, and zero or $5 primary care copays. Employees receive proactive screening for colonoscopies, mammograms, cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension during clinic visits. Ninety percent of medicines including insulin cost nothing, with remaining drugs $0-25, and hospital admissions cost flat $750. The model saved $600 million while providing superior preventive care by eliminating insurance middlemen and focusing on early chronic disease detection when 75-85% of costs originate. Dr. Dawn explains abdominophrenic dyssynergia causing bloating unrelated to gas or food. The diaphragm descends and abdominal wall muscles relax, pushing organs forward after meals. CT scans showed lettuce-related bloating involved no intestinal gas changes but demonstrated this abnormal muscle reflex. Randomized trials showed biofeedback training with chest-lifting and abdominal wall contracting exercises before and after eating for four weeks improved symptoms 66%. She warns that constant bloating in postmenopausal women unrelated to eating requires ovarian cancer screening. She discusses how genes drive personality using dopamine receptor gene DRD4 polymorphisms as an example. The 7-repeat variant present in 48% of Americans creates receptors binding dopamine poorly, associating with ADHD, pathological gambling, alcoholism, drug dependence, and bulimia, plus personality traits of novelty-seeking, impulsiveness, and optimism. The 2-repeat DRD4 variant common in Asia correlates with lower anger and higher forgiveness. DRD2 variations enhance the memory of negative outcomes, creating pessimistic bias and avoidance behavior. She presents the KETO trial showing "lean mass hyper-responder phenotype" where very low-carbohydrate dieters averaging age 55 maintained LDL cholesterol of 272 for five years but showed identical coronary artery calcium scores and plaque burden as matched controls with LDL under 150. Despite extreme LDL elevation, the very low insulin levels from carbohydrate restriction prevent LDL oxidation, the inflammatory "loading" process enabling arterial damage. She concludes with unusual cancer symptom where recurrent pain in specific body locations after alcohol consumption, lasting 1-2 days, occurs in 5% of Hodgkin lymphoma patients and in other cancers when alcohol induced blood vessel dilation and inflammatory chemical release in cancer-containing lymph nodes causes pain after drinking.
