Today, I am lucky to have here with me, a specialist in Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery for adults and adolescents, Dr. Robert Cywes. He has been doing bariatric surgery for 18 years, performing over 8,000 surgeries. This is an episode that originally aired on March 2020, and it was so good we decided to re-release it here today.  Dr. Cywes' medical training began in Cape Town, South Africa, where he received his medical degree from The University of Cape Town. In 1989, Dr. Cywes moved to North America and completed a year-long residency in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University's Columbus Children's Hospital. After completing his pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Dr. Cywes was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric and Fetal Surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he did hepatic stem cell research. During this time, Dr. Cywes became increasingly interested in adolescent obesity and the impact of the liver and metabolic syndrome on young patients. Dr. Cywes' research led to a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity of chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of obesity and so-called obesity-related co-morbidities, and he became interested in developing a clinical program to treat obese patients using this knowledge. Dr. Cywes relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where he joined the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Nemours Children's Clinic and Wolfson Children's Hospital. This led to a national meeting in Jacksonville where guidelines for adolescent obesity surgery were established. Dr. Cywes established JSAPA to continue his work in both adolescent and adult obesity treatment and surgery, and in 2013 opened a practice in Palm Beach County, Florida. He now works with a highly experienced team of professionals from a variety of medical sub-specialties to better care for obese patients. He has developed the practice into an internationally recognized Center of Excellence for obesity surgery. The practice uses a cognitive behavioral therapy approach that addresses carbohydrate addiction, along with bariatric surgery, to help patients manage their obesity long term. In this episode, Dr. Cywes opens the show discussing the correlation between carbohydrates and toxic drugs. Our bodies do not need to run on sugar; our bodies prefer a keto lifestyle. Also, Dr. Cywes explains effective methods of treating diabetes and what's wrong with conventional treatments. Intermittent fasting has recently become a major health trend, with devotees claiming it can cause impressive weight loss with quick turnarounds. But there might be more to the fasting diet than being able to tighten the belt a few notches. Researchers out of the University of Wisconsin looking at mice on different diets have found that those who were fed fewer calories in a single daily feeding lived longer than mice eating the same number of calories distributed throughout the day. Study author Dudley Lamming has long studied the effect of restricted diets on metabolism. He's with us to look at the study, published in Nature Metabolism, how eating less helped improve the health and lifespan of rodents, and whether it's likely to be the same for people.

Your body is talking to you 24/7. It is the most intelligent aspect of ourselves. The body and the subconscious mind know everything about us. The subconscious mind is responsible for 95% of your day-to-day actions. The subconscious mind accepts everything as truth. To have an effective habit change, you have to go into the subconscious mind and rewrite the story. Actions steps: Choose whatever workout you will do daily. Pick a diet that is healthy for a human being. Rewrite the stories that are in your head. [27:00] The Mental Pillar: Embracing The Present Moment You are the captain of your mental capacity. The ego is a very important tool; it's the CEO of your mind. For the most part, people operate on the daily because of the actions of their ego. You shouldn't kill the ego; instead, you need to put your ego in check. Also, being adaptive and being resilient are very important aspects of the mind. If someone is suffering from depression or anxiety, then they need to find the present. The only thing we have control over is the present. [33:00] Affirmations Will Help You Be More Present Affirmations help bring us into the present. Keith's favorite affirmation is “I am.” Focusing on your breath will also be beneficial. Once you're in the present, there is no past, and there is no future. [36:40] The Emotional Pillar: Learn How To Have Hard Discussions With People You Disagree With People can't have hard discussions anymore. The littlest things will get people offended. We should live in a society where we can have discussions with people we disagree with. One way to improve your emotional pillar is by doing a deep dive into an argument that you believe. However, you should be researching the other side of that argument. [41:30] The Spiritual Pillar: Find Your Relationship With Other The spiritual pillar is your relationship with ‘other.' Many people choose science as their relationship with other. There needs to be an entity that is higher than you. You can access the other through prayer or meditation. Spirituality does not need to be religion. [44:50] The Financial Pillar: Money Is Freedom “Money is not the root of all evil; evil thought is the root of all evil.” -Keith Money won't bring you happiness. However, you might be happier if you had money to create freedom. Money will be a magnifying to who you actually are. If you are a good person, money will be a tool to let you help more people. [51:00] The Relational Pillar and The Tribal Pillar: The relational pillar is your personal relationship with somebody else. You want to surround yourself with people that you aspire to be like.
