He also created one of the most popular obstacle-race series in the world, Spartan Race. He's convinced a community of more than 10 million people to voluntarily embrace the experience of “tough fitness.”“I want you to give me the worst stuff you got,” Joe says. “The turmoil, the pain, the suffering, and [then] give me the strength I need to deal with it. Just keep it coming. And so that became the Spartan prayer, like give me the shitty days, give me the failure, because I know I'm going to become better at dealing with that.”It's not until you reach the edge and get through it that you realize how much you're capable of. But does tough mean resilient? And does that level of influence translate to family dynamics? That's the conversation we dig into specifically for parents and kids. Joe's always had a passion for endurance and activities that push his mental and physical limits. During the pandemic, he looked closer to home and found ways he could be a better parent. He believes how you react to challenging situations defines you and your family. His latest book, “10 Rules for Resilience: Mental Toughness for Families,” talks about defining and creating resilience. “This book was born in 2020, while I watched as families all over the globe faced the discomforts thrust at them and realized how insanely unprepared most people are for difficulty.”During this time in our history, the pressure, stress and unpredictability in bigger amounts than ever made clear that it was essential to develop more resilience. Joe's term, “True Resilience” describes a body and mind carved out of hard work, challenge, and failure. He says it takes True Resilience to approach overwhelming situations with calm and confidence, to not get rattled, anxious, or angry, and even to embrace failure, setbacks, and redirections. It also means listening and responding with intention: “Much of your success will depend on your ability to discern what sparks enthusiasm and motivation in your child,” Joe says. “Find your kid's flow.”Here's some of what you'll find in “10 Rules for Resilience: Mental Toughness for Families:”Proven techniques from clinical research and experience to set the whole family up for better, more effective coping skills.Family activities that supplement each rule of resilience and help you put the reading material into real-life action.A values exercise to help your family create a solid vision statement.A five-step model to increase your fear IQ.Listen on as Joe shares the benefits of training your kids in hard work, traveling as a family, and pushing yourself to the limit as a parent. Achieving the Transformation You Desire with Ross Assenheim

Transformations are more often results of choices rather than circumstances! The desire to transform is not in short supply. People want to change their lives, have bigger houses, earn more money, spend more time with their families, and have healthier bodies. Despite these desires, very few actually achieve their goals, because most people look to their circumstances instead of themselves. Most people attribute deteriorating health to work and family obligations, overwhelming amounts of stress, old injuries, among other excuses that form a long list, EXCLUDING PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY! On today's episode, we've got Ross Assenheim to set the record straight! There will always be work, family obligations, stress, and other issues that will interrupt your transformation, ONLY if you let these factors take the wheel. Ross is a husband, and a father of 2 kids. He works insane hours (in the evening) managing his business, comes home to fulfill his obligations to his family, gets very little sleep, BUT still manages to find time to go to the gym and maintain a fit and healthy body! Before he decided to take control of his life, he was overweight and was suffering from slipped discs. To keep himself awake during the night, he consumes large amounts of sugar and caffeine in energy drinks. Besides that, he also craved heavily for sweets like chocolates. However, his body could only tolerate so much abuse. He started having a hard time moving and he experienced more aches and pains. That's when he decided he needed to take charge in taking back his health. Getting inspiration from different biohackers, he went on a journey to build a fit and healthy body. He not only transformed himself but also inspired family, friends and colleagues to make positive changes in their lifestyles. What was key for Ross's transformation? What are some of the techniques he employed? How does his personal transformation affect the people around him? Check out this episodes to learn more about being personally accountable for health transformations and inspiring others to follow the same road to fitness and health. ---------------- Follow me on Instagram and feel free to DM about 1-1 online training @krisgethin Do you need elite sports supplements you can trust to help you achieve your goals in the gym and in life?  Click here https://bit.ly/kgkaged Use the code Healthkik for 15% off all supplements For my preferred Biohacking and anti-aging supplements, go to https://bit.ly/kgbiostacklabs For a range of organic CBD tinctures, bath bombs and muscle recovery creams that I use for sleep, anxiety, joint/muscle pain and relaxation, go to https://bit.ly/kgeliteprocbd You heard me talking about it throughout this episode, MASSZYMES: A safe and natural digestive enzyme supplement for men and women which contains essential enzymes for better digestion, less bloating and relief from constipation and gas. Marisa is a clinical psychologist and expert in human behavior who developed a new way to approach your mental health — Rapid Transformational Therapy® (RTT®). RTT offers the same benefits of traditional therapy, but on a much quicker timeline.“I didn't understand why therapy, which is also dealing with pain, had to be so long. I never got that ‘turn up with your pain every week,'” she says. “We'll keep reopening the wound. And one day, you might get better.”She's also an international best-selling author of multiple books, motivational speaker, personal development expert and leading celebrity therapist. She's worked with people around the world and most of them have a story they tell themselves about not being “enough.” Her newest book puts the focus squarely on the personal narrative you're clinging to: “Tell Yourself A Better Lie: Use The Power Of Rapid Transformational Therapy To Edit Your Story And Rewrite Your Life.” “After 30 years of private practice, I created Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) because it was clear to me that so much of the pain and suffering we see in the world comes down to the fundamental stories we tell ourselves and how often those stories are untrue or outright lies,” she explains. RTT has roots in hypnosis.Marisa helps people pinpoint the reasons behind why people want what they want, so they can actualize a meaningful life for themselves. She uses a solution-oriented technique that can make you mentally stronger, more confident and even more loving towards yourself. “He who hesitates is lost,” she says. “While you're waiting to write your book or start your company, someone else is going to come along and write that book and start that company. So, time is the one thing we don't have access of. And so, I think they'll always be people who like that long method [of traditional talk therapy] and a lot of people who don't like it. And I think we can definitely accommodate both.”It's time to start telling yourself the truth about who you are. “Our greatest pain is caused by the lies we tell ourselves,” Marisa says. She offers candid advice on how to help you recognize the harmful story you tell yourself and how to change it to a better one.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We graduated from college together more than 2 decades ago, and she went on to be a certified holistic wellness coach...talking in this episode about biohacking for your health, nutrition advice for busy people in the New Year, how faith in God plays a role in your wellness, plus being a cancer survivor and a mother to a pair of teens. Make sure to subscribe to "Run The Race" for weekly inspiration related to fitness and faith. (5:12) Naomi (Bleeker) Damask, Elon College (NC) class of 1998 like me, starts by talking about vision for the New Year, keys to success to stick with your goals for 2022, and building simple healthy habits, hers involving where she puts her faith devotional and glasses of water. (9:23) Losing weight is a big focus with "resolutions" but she says you also gotta focus on the WHY and your inside. (11:58) Ten years ago, this healthy young woman got a "sucker punch" when she found out she had 2 invasive tumors, changing the direction of her life. She talks about what she did to become a cancer survivor and change her career with a new mission to help women with prevention health. Naomi says health care providers give women too many medicine "bandaids" and we all have to learn to listen to our bodies! With stressful lives, breaks are needed. For those of us with busy lives, (20:49) coach Naomi gets specific about how/why we should eat healthy, with 3 keys of what to look for in your food. You can still enjoy eating what you want at times, and take small steps. (25:40) She says the spiritual and emotional sides are also key for wellness, which includes having hope! And why did she change from vegetarian lifestyle to eating meat again? (31:00) She explains why she left the corporate world, a job at Maybelline, after her cancer diagnosis. Now a wellness entrepreneur in epigenetics, biohacking and nutrigenomics - she explains what all that means. In laymans terms, you have a family history that affects your health, but your environment and what you eat also impacts our genes, plus what small changes YOU can make for a healthier life overall. With the idea to get away from technology more, (36:25) Naomi talks about getting outside and moving more, even cold therapy in Minnesota where she lives. She also created "Vitamin C Parties." The C stands for cancer and some other important "C" words. (40:27) As a coach, she talks about seeing more depression during the COVID pandemic, how serving others can help. (42:38) This mom hopes to be an example for other women, including her 2 teen daughters. (47:58) Naomi closes us out in prayer, (50:28) then the "Stuck in my Head" segment is me paying homage to entertainers we recently lost - Betty White and Bob Saget - by singing their TV theme songs. IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE... … Body movement expert Aaron Alexander joins the show to talk about how to integrate healthy movement practices into your daily life. You've likely heard that sitting is the new smoking – well, good news: It's not the sitting itself, but how you sit, that affects your well-being. In fact, all the ways you hold your body and move your body matters. Body language and how you move through space tells others how comfortable you are, how truthful and trustworthy you are, and more. Most of you have built up body movement around a collapse state, which can lead to physical and emotional pain. Aaron spent years traveling the world, discovering how other cultures defined and measured health and studying movement behaviors. He found that the healthiest cultures incorporate aligned movement and sitting styles into their day-to-day activity. Take walking for example. “When you're out taking a walk, it's like you are literally playing symphony of your physiology,” he says. “Walking is one of the healthiest things that a person can do–just going out and getting yourself into that contralateral motion, contralateral being just like walking pattern. As you're doing that, you're stimulating your brain function, you're also stimulating things like peristalsis and digestion and organ function.”Aaron is a manual therapist, using movement techniques inspired by yoga, martial arts, chiropractic skills and more. He also hosts the popular Align Podcast, and wrote “The Align Method: A Modern Movement Guide for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind, and Stress-Proof Life,” which shares the tools you need to reshape your environment for enhanced creativity and longevity.Healthy movement incorporating play and adaptability enhances creativity, resilience and creates a healthy nervous system. During the show, Aaron goes over the five daily movements to integrate into your life and how to get started in a productive, gentle and playful way.“Your body is so darn adaptable that if it's just a matter of you need to give it a baseline of the raw components to be healthy,” says Aaron. “If for a moment you're slouching over a chair, I love that. There's no problem with that, it's the repetition of that. If for a movement you're looking into a wall or into a blue light or whatever, you're not going to just explode.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

With evolution comes renewed purpose and renewed life! Think about it! Sooner or later, we're bound to outgrow our current roles. And if we don't evolve, we risk falling into a life of redundancy, of wasted talents and opportunities, and of less than meaningful existence – that which is no way to live at all! In this solo episode, Kris Gethin recounts his journey of evolution and what that meant for Kaged Muscle. He went to college and took up International Health and Sports Therapy. From there, he took other courses and certifications in order to expand his knowledge on what he was passionate about. Kris knew he couldn't wear the skin of being just a student forever. In order to grow further in pursuit of his passion, he had to apply what knew, thus deciding to compete in his first body-building competition. From there, he became a personal trainer, became editor-in-chief of a body-building website, and also became a video trainer. It was at the time of being a video trainer that Kris felt more responsibility towards the supplements he suggested to his audience, and so he started testing all sorts of supplements. There he began understanding the gaps in the food supplement industry. Wanting to bridge the health and performance sectors, he partnered with close friends who shared in his goal and they came up with Kaged Muscle. As Kris and his partners continued growing as people and professionals, so did Kaged Muscle. They began to feel they weren't doing themselves justice by remaining as Kaged Muscle. Some people thought the brand was too hardcore. If they wanted to help MORE people achieve their health goals, they had to balance “healthy” and “hardcore”. To reach target audience from different age groups, lifestyles, and other demographics, Kaged Muscle had to evolve. Still about muscle, still hardcore, but now, KAGED means something MORE! What makes the brand better? What NEW benefits can you expect? How does KAGED give more people the chance at great health and a full life? Check out this episode to learn more about finding new purpose through evolution, and what the NEW and Improved [KAGED] has in store for you! ---------------- Follow me on Instagram and feel free to DM about 1-1 online training @krisgethin Do you need elite sports supplements you can trust to help you achieve your goals in the gym and in life?  Click here https://bit.ly/kgkaged For my preferred Biohacking and anti-aging supplements, go to https://bit.ly/kgbiostacklabs For a range of organic CBD tinctures, bath bombs and muscle recovery creams that I use for sleep, anxiety, joint/muscle pain and relaxation, go to https://bit.ly/kgeliteprocbd You heard me talking about it throughout this episode, MASSZYMES: A safe and natural digestive enzyme supplement for men and women which contains essential enzymes for better digestion, less bloating and relief from constipation and gas. Economic games and heavy mathematics are used in this field of research. My official degree is doctorate in Economics with dissertation in neuroscience. This field is referred to as Neuroeconomics.  I now study how the brain and nutrition interrelate. I specifically focus on migraine as a channelopathy, where electrolyte imbalance induced by glucose sensitivity and carbs intolerance is causing havoc. How to Treat & Prevent Migraines Without Medicines” is available in paperback and e-book all over the world (https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Migraine-Epidemic-Migraines-Medicines-ebook/dp/B076BZG2V3). I am currently working on a ketosis book (the various ways of eating, such as carnivore, ketogenic, and even the low carbs high fat, that can get a person into ketosis) that is custom tailored to migraineurs, because their reaction to nutrition is so different from others and because they need so different electrolytes. Quantum energy fields are different from harmful EMFs you're told to avoid. Here are a few of the benefits of quantum energy, also known as “frequency medicine.”Improves your blood and cellular healthIncreases your fitness level and speeds up recovery Intensifies the taste of your food and extends its shelf lifeEases pain and activates your own inner healerImprove the quality of your water at home and on the road.Helps you become more resistant to stress and more efficient in your daily tasksPrevents exhaustion so you're able to focus betterAllows you to worry less and enjoy the momentBut how can quantum energy and specific frequencies have such a powerful effect on humans, animals and even plants? Philipp looked to science for the answers. Leela submits its products to be scientifically studied by third party institutes and doctor's offices. Leela concentrates pure quantum energy in specific plates and aligns them to create a highly concentrated field and quantum energy space. Examples are the Leela Quantum Bloc and Infinity Bloc. They've also developed frequency cards, capsules and clothing.“There's so many people that may want to enjoy support like that, and they don't understand it,” Philipp says. “And for them, you need to provide something for the brain to read through it, and that's what we've done.” So far, the research studies found quantum energy frequencies:Block, neutralize and bring EMFs into harmony Positively impact the autonomic nervous system and heart rate variabilityPositively impact organ function, cellular health and blood healthNeutralize harmful frequencies like herbicides, pesticides and cesium 137Boost body and energy function in 100% of cases Some of that testing includes measuring EMFs or using dark-field microscopy to measure voltage in the cells. Leela's other research projects are studying the benefits of quantum energy frequencies for autistic kids, athletes, and people experiencing chronic Lyme disease. This fascinating topic gets into other frequencies, too, like molecular, etheric, and sound. Nicole and Will discuss the concerning factors at play when coaching women and the three different dieting phases: lean, restore, and build. The two will address the fears that concern female clients who need to restore their health before engaging in another fat loss transformation. They will address the importance of monitoring your hormone levels and other health markers through lab testing and how to get it. Will and Nicole will touch on why we see women steering towards harmful and aggressive workout habits more so than men in the nutritional coaching world and learn what it will take to tackle the change that needs to happen in diet culture.

Today, I am thrilled and honored to be talking to Dr. Alexandra Sowa. Dr. Sowa is a dual board-certified physician of internal medicine, specializing in metabolic health, and clinical instructor of medicine at NYU Langone. She has served as a health expert for national media outlets and print publications like SiriusXM, CBS News, NPR, the New York Times, U.S. News, World Report, and more. In addition to her private practice in NYC, she is the founder of SoWell Health, a consumer metabolic health company.  Over the years, people kept complaining to Dr. Sowa about weight gain, decreased endurance, brain fog, and irregular periods, even when their doctors had told them they were healthy and their labs looked fine. When Dr. Sowa checked their labs, however, she would immediately see that they had metabolic syndrome, an underactive thyroid, a vitamin deficiency, and in 90% of the cases, insulin resistance too. During the turbulent period of the pandemic, Dr. Sowa finally had the time to sit and think about how she could help those patients. She came up with a unique solution and developed a home-testing kit to assess and address the symptoms of people's metabolic health issues. In this episode, we discuss the scope of metabolic health in the U.S., and Dr. Sowa explains how she came up with her Weight Biology Kit. We talk about the importance of making the right nutritional choices and improving your health by making better lifestyle decisions. We dive into the role of using technology to monitor health, the influence of alcohol, and using Naltrexone to overcome alcohol cravings. We also unpack the notions of cheat days and biohacking in the wellness space. Remember to check out Dr. Sowa's Weight Biology Kit, a point-of-care testing kit for insulin resistance. Stay tuned for more!  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How Dr. Sowa came up with her home-testing kit to address people's metabolic issues. Insulin is often the first biomarker to become dysregulated as people move towards insulin resistance. Dr. Sowa explains why insulin is a better predictor than blood sugar of where people are in terms of their metabolic health. Why do people with high insulin levels gain weight even if they are calorie-restricting and eating very little? How does nutrition impact metabolic health? The two most important things you can do to improve your health if you have elevated insulin, and you show signs of insulin resistance. Three lifestyle changes that, in addition to better nutrition, can be instrumental in helping improve fasting insulin and blood sugar levels. The disruptive role alcohol can play in your metabolic health. Some tips for overcoming alcohol cravings. Why is it best to avoid having cheat days? The benefits of journaling, as a motivator for changing behavior. The roles technology and biohacking can play in metabolic health. The eight areas that get tested in Dr. Sowa's core point-of-care home testing products. Dr. Sowa explains what the HOMA-IR score is. In his latest book “Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine,” he focuses on how real food can reverse chronic disease and promote longevity. He also challenges the current healthcare paradigm and the influence of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government. “I wrote Metabolical to basically explain what is healthy,” Dr. Lustig says. “And based on the empiric data, based on the science, based on the pathologies that I describe in the book that belie chronic disease, I distilled all of the information down to six words – two precepts, six words: ‘Protect the liver, feed the gut.'”These are the eight cell pathologies that underlie all chronic disease, according to Dr. Lustig:glycationoxidative stressmitochondrial dysfunctioninsulin resistancemembrane instabilityinflammationepigeneticsautophagy"[When] you look at the entire molecular mechanism of every single one of those eight subcellular pathologies, none of them have a medicine," he says. "None of them are druggable. They're all foodable." His book also documents how processed food has impacted human health, the economy, and the environment over the past 50 years. “It's not about obesity, it never was,” Dr. Lustig says. “The key to the kingdom is that it is not about obesity, it is about metabolic dysfunction and anyone can get it, and that's what makes it a public health crisis, because obesity is a result of the problem, not the cause.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

He's been researching causes and ways to manage it. He's also been helping people deal with the consequences of both acute and chronic stress. He's back on the show (don't miss episodes #729 and #730) to talk about how stress disturbs systems of your body and mind, which, of course, affects your sleep.Stress is not inherently bad because we require it to grow, Dr. Rabin says. “We require the stress to help us learn how to overcome the challenges that are signaled by the stress to become better, stronger, fuller versions of ourselves.” … “There are the situations where we start to see acute stress that can be healthy and very helpful to growth turn into chronic stress,” he continues. “And that chronic stress increases inflammation on a daily basis. It's that chronic stress that increases likelihood of disease.”Dr. Rabin co-founded Apollo Neuroscience, a company that developed the first scientifically validated wearable technology that actively improves energy, focus and relaxation. This tech uses a novel touch therapy that signals safety to the brain. In new studies, it's had a terrific impact on stress and sleep.“Health means the restoration and maintenance of balance for all of us,” Dr. Rabin says. “Critically important is managing our sleep and our circadian rhythms, and our sleep and wake cycles. Maintaining sleep and making sure we do things to have a healthy sleep rhythm is going to maximize our performance and energy availability during the day and psychedelic medicines and wearables can play as important to role in that for us as the day-to-day practices of breathwork and meditation, yoga, exercise and nutrition.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
