In this episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast, I spoke with Associate Professor of Urban Planning at Hunter College, Stefan Al, and Professor at New York Institute of Technology, Tom Verebes, about their recent co-edited book, The Urbanism Reader: Design, Technology, Culture and the Future of Cities, published by Bloomsbury (2025). Orientated towards design in the contemporary city, The Urbanism Reader gathers together key texts that explore urban theory, planning and development pertinent to the city as we find it now – a messy, networked and highly technological state which inflects, if not forms, the modern citizen and their social world . Bringing together influential writings from scholars and practitioners, including greats like Venturi and Scott Brown, Tschumi, Frampton, Kwinter, Eisenman, Koolhaas and Maas, but also introducing new voices and accents, including Anne Whiston Spirn, Anaya Roy, Walter Hood and Andrea Moneta among many others, the book presents a good overview of key themes, like virtuality, computationality, informality, equity, ecology, density and connectivity. To stand back from all this thinking and just look is thrilling really. Have a listen and find out why you should. Tom and Stefan are great to hear.Stefan also leads his own practice, Stefan Al Architects and Tom is founder and Creative Director of OCEAN CN. Both gentlemen can be found on LinkedIn and Instagram. We are kicking off Season 3 of the Team Player Podcast by making history as we are often prone to do with our 1st ever guest from the Private School world! We always make the call for recommendations and today's guest came expressly recommended from a Team Player on Twitter = he is the Head Football Coach at Houston Christian High School - welcome A.J. Eisenman to the show! - Growing up in Spring after moving from the crisp mountain air of Greeley, CO! - Coach graduated from a bona fide Northside Powerhouse as a proud Spring Westfield Mustang. However, he jokingly describes himself as the program's "bad luck curse" as all 4 years that he was a student and the one year that he was there as a coach were some of the RARE times the Mustangs did not make the playoffs! - AJ talks about what led him to make the move to private school after spending his entire life up to that point in public schools, and how being at a faith-based institution has changed his life, along with how his program emphasizes the players' true purpose as way more than just a football player. - Coach describes playing for it all this past postseason and describes the differences between TAPPS and SPC football, along with the dynamics of a student body that doesn't come from a defined attendance zone including the occasional off years like the top he had a class of only 3 incoming freshmen football players! With that experience we ask coach what he thinks about the state of Oklahoma approving a "one-time" no questions asked transfer rule and the UIL's attempt to resist the transfer portal making its way down to HS, and finally Coach gives a private school perspective on the state's school voucher debate. - Finally although his Bronco fandom has worn off after years and years of being a Houstonian you never forget your first love. So Coach gives us his "Mile High Salute" Denver Bronco Mt. Rushmore and answers a class of 83 Start-Bench-Cut with 3 Hall-of-Fame signal callers in John Elway, Jim Kelly, and Dan Marino! As a 13 year old from Southern California Russ Eisenman listened to KROQ, stole quarters from his step-father's nightstand and went to Tower Records in Campbell to buy cassettes recommended to him by one of the store's clerks. This opened up Russ' depth and knowledge of popular music. Many years later Russ Eisenman started with Tower Records working at Tower.com . By 2002 Russ was Tower's Chief Marketing Officer. And that clerk from the Campbell store? He rose to Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Universal Music Group, as Russ learned from a chance meeting years later. But back to Russ Eisenman…how does a guy who started off studying psychology, finished with a Masters Degree in Sports Management end up as Chief Marketing Officer for Tower Records? “Stalking Russ and Michael Solomon” is one answer. A background in one of the pioneering internet businesses of the 1990's (“before Google, before Expedia”) certainly helped. A drive and resolve after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma as a college student (he got through his treatments listening to The Smashing Pumpkins' “Siamese Dream” repeatedly) might have been a factor.Starting with Tower.com in 1999 under Mark Bressler, Russ worked alongside Jon Fiedner and Mike Farrace. Behind the scenes trying to get Retail Ops to embrace the Tower.com brand in the stores was an uphill battle. In this episode Russ Eisenman takes us behind the scenes of those heady and eventually turbulent days of Tower Records. He describes what he and his team contributed and what he witnessed during that time.

Police found the comic alive but gravely injured in a West Hollywood home when they responded to a call Saturday morning from Jeni's girlfriend, Los Angeles police officer Norma Eisenman said. Eisenman said the caller told police: "My boyfriend shot himself in the face." Jeni, who according to police was 49 years old, died at a nearby hospital. Eisenman said suicide had not been officially confirmed and the investigation was continuing. An autopsy on Jeni was to be done Monday, said Lieut. Fred Corral from the investigation division of the coroner's office. Jeni regularly toured the United States with a standup act and had starred in several HBO comedy specials, most recently A Big Steaming Pile of Me during the 2005-06 season. Another HBO special, Platypus Man, won a Cable ACE award for best standup comedy special and formed the basis for Jeni's UPN sitcom of the same name, which ran for one season. Jeni's movie credits included The Mask, in which he played Jim Carrey's best friend, The Aristocrats, National Lampoon's Dad's Week Off and An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn. He had guest appearances in the TV shows Everybody Hates Chris, Married: With Children and updated versions of the game shows Hollywood Squares and Match Game. Bubble Skincare has been one of the most talked-about Gen-Z-focused beauty brands since launching in November 2020. “My passion was always about creating brands that could emotionally connect to consumers,” said founder and CEO Shai Eisenman on the latest episode of the Glossy Beauty podcast. Eisenman began her entrepreneurial journey at just 21 years old. Out of the gate, Bubble launched its affordable skin-care products with fun packaging through its own direct-to-consumer website, but in June 2021, it went big, launching in 3,900 Walmart stores. While Walmart was seemingly an unusual beauty retailer to partner with, Eisenman said that 42% of U.S. teens shop at Walmart once or twice a month for skin-care products. Since its debut, Bubble has seen week-over-week sales growth in Walmart, and Bubble has been a key pillar of the retailer's larger beauty strategy. Since the very beginning, Bubble has engaged with Gen Z; the company's first focus groups were comprised of teens who provided feedback on the brand's initial product lineup and formulations, as well as branding and marketing strategies. Eisenman engaged friends and family members' teens in exchange for Sephora gift cards. Looking ahead, Bubble is focused on further customizing its product offerings to satisfy customers' wants and needs. Additionally, the company is launching over-the-counter products which will enable it to steal more market share from heritage skin-care brands like Clearasil and Neutrogena.
On this week's episode I chat with Ryan Eisenman, Co-Founder & CEO of Arch. Arch is a tech-enabled service that helps private investors organize all of the paperwork associated with their investments. Collecting statements, tax documents and legal docs from private markets has become a nightmare for investors, and Arch is providing a way to solve that. Ryan interestingly compares the admin of the private markets to what it used to be for public companies back when companies issued paper stock certificates. Arch's tech tentacles into dozens of platforms to centralize data and the flow of information seamlessly. During the convo we discuss the Arch solution, startup lessons and the fairness of investor accreditation laws in the US. Enjoy. Earned: Strategies and Success Stories From the Best in Beauty + Fashion
In Episode 49 of Earned, Conor sits down with Shai Eisenman, founder and CEO of the affordable, Gen Z-tailored skincare brand Bubble. We start by discussing the challenges of launching and scaling a business during the pandemic, and hear why Shai was inspired to disrupt the outdated mass skincare market and create a brand catering to today's teens. Shai then explains how every decision the brand makes is rooted in research, and how Bubble invited over 10,000 teens and Gen Zers to provide insight and feedback about their product and shopping preferences. We explore how the brand's mission to educate Gen Z consumers—without pushing products—inspired the creation of Bubble's “Skin School,” and helped foster more genuine connection among its community. We then take a step back to discuss Shai's background, learning why she decided to attend university at 15 and graduate at 18, and how playing chess professionally was a hugely formative experience that contributed to her business savvy. Next, Shai reveals how she learned that every assumption she had about Gen Z was wrong, and why it became her top priority to listen to these young consumers and understand their unique needs in order to create the best possible brand for them. To close the show, we hear why Bubble entered a retail partnership with Walmart while still nurturing its community through DTC.

Oregonians have had yet another summer impacted by wildfires and lingering smoke. The immediate threat of fires is traumatic for those whose homes and businesses are directly in the path of a blaze. But the smoke from these fires spreads farther than the flames themselves, and has led to weeks of unhealthy, or even hazardous, air in cities around the region. David Eisenman is one of the few scientists who has studied the mental health impacts of wildfire smoke. His work also focuses on solastalgia — the specific grief people feel when a landscape we love is lost or dramatically altered. Eisenman is a professor of medicine and public health at University of California, Los Angeles and the director of the UCLA Center for Public Health and Disasters. We talk with him about his work.

Today's guest is Anthony Eisenman, who works in enterprise sales for Fortune 100 companies. Eisenman grew up in a single-parent family and felt that more traditional career paths were closed off to him but was attracted to the idea of working in sales because of the possibility of being paid for his performance via commission. Through hard work and diligence, he leveraged himself into a position of owning stock options in major corporations and has built up his own brand to teach others his methods. Mike and Anthony begin by discussing how to increase your income. Eisenman's first piece of advice, particularly for those who currently only work for one organization and who may have a fixed income, is to negotiate with your employer to be paid based on performance. Although this brings an element of risk, Eisenman underlines that this will give you the opportunity to prove your value to the organization. Once your value has been demonstrated through excellent performance, you are then in a better position to negotiate for greater rewards, including equity. Anthony then outlines his checklist of systems to put in place before creating multiple streams of income or pursuing a passion project. Firstly, it is important to ensure that you are excelling in your primary source of income, meaning that you have maximized your earning capacity in this role. Secondly, this role should operate like a well-oiled machine with a firm system and defined processes in place, giving you the capacity to open yourself up to investing time and energy into other sources of income. When launching a secondary revenue stream, Anthony highlights the possibility of receiving pushback from your company or entourage. When he began to work for himself, colleagues questioned his commitment to his job and his time management capacity. However, Anthony ensured that he continued to achieve highly so that his performance and production would speak for itself. Anthony then deep dives into his personal motivation to achieve. Whilst he used to be motivated by his ego and the idea of proving people wrong, today he is more inspired by the idea of creating a legacy for his family to give his children the comforts he never had. The memories of his former financial struggles have stayed with him and continue to push him forward. Mike also affirms how the fear of failure can be a strong push factor towards achieving financial success, since a push away from financial hardship can be just as strong a motivator as the pull factor of the desire to earn wealth for your family. Mike then questions Anthony about the steps that he took to build his brand, and Anthony explains that the first step that he took was to invest in coaching to learn about real estate and to create a personal brand. Initially his goals for his side businesses were low as he wasn't under pressure to achieve immediately, and this allowed him to develop and grow gradually. Anthony chose to add a short-term real estate business to his portfolio as a way to involve his family in his business, as his wife could take over the furnishing and property management aspect of the business and in the long term, his children may also become involved with property management too. Lastly, the conversation turns to Anthony's personal brand, which aims to help people improve their sales strategies to earn the income they deserve. He has numerous books and coaching products covering topics from cold calls to the art of persuasion to the blueprint to wealth creation. These resources represent a philosophy of lifelong learning in order to improve yourself and your position in life. No matter what stage you're at, there is always room to grow and learn and those who don't take that opportunity will stagnate. Don't miss this enlightening episode of Just Start Real Estate, and stay tuned to the end to find out how to get free learning resources from Anthony Eisenman so that you can learn his secrets to success! Notable Quotes: “If you can prove yourself by being paid based on your performance, you're going to earn a higher income and have a higher ceiling, and you can prove yourself to be valuable.” Anthony Eisenman “Don't ever be afraid to lose what you have now in order to gain even more.” Anthony Eisenman “I did get pushback internally from my organization and it just made me press the gas that much harder.” Anthony Eisenman “Everybody deserves to do some things they're passionate about on the side. You don't have to dedicate 110% to your organization. You can have some time to do some things on your own.” Anthony Eisenman “If you get lazy, then your goals aren't big enough.” Anthony Eisenman “Part of my motivation, aside from my family, is fear of failure.” Mike Simmons “Once I make a decision to do something, I take action right away.” Anthony Eisenman “The people that get over the hump and don't quit are the people that make it.” Anthony Eisenman “I don't need the plan, I just need the next actionable step. The plan will unfold as you take action.” Anthony Eisenman “The short-term rental game is great because you can get into it in so many different ways.” Anthony Eisenman “If you're not consuming information to try to better yourself, I hope you love exactly where you are right now because that's where you will be in 20 years.” Mike Simmons Links: Anthony on Facebook Anthony on LinkedIn Anthony on Instagram Master Cold Calling In Five Easy Steps The Science of Persuasion My Sales Mentality Anthony Eisenman Coaching Program Just Start Real Estate JSRE on Facebook Mike on Facebook Mike on Instagram Mike on LinkedIn Mike on Twitter Level Jumping: How I Grew My Business to Over $1 Million in Profits in 12 Months
