Dr. Christine B. Whelan is an author, professor, speaker, and thought leader guiding organizations like the DeBruce Foundation and AARP's Life Reimagined on self-improvement strategies. She is the best-selling author of the ten-lesson series Finding Your Purpose and five additional books, including The Big Picture and Generation WTF. As a Clinical Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Human Ecology, Dr. Whelan teaches classes on happiness, finance, and family and directs the MORE: Money, Relationships & Equality program.  In this episode… We're often told that money can't buy happiness, yet companies market products to target our basic needs and desires. This consumption-driven economy teaches us that we can choose how to expend our resources to fulfill our innate purpose. How can business owners identify their purpose to allocate resources toward a meaningful outcome? When surveyed on happiness levels, Americans often rank themselves lower than people from other countries, holding themselves to an unrealistic standard of happiness based on the false perception of others. Human ecology researcher Dr. Christine B. Whelan maintains that your journey to happiness and fulfillment should depend solely on your personal and professional core values, which determine your ultimate purpose. To identify these values, you can engage in a purpose statement exercise that involves identifying your unique strengths and leveraging them to make a positive impact personally and professionally. Accordingly, each action and decision should align with your core values and propel you toward your ultimate goal. Tune in to this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast as William Harris chats with Dr. Christine B. Whelan about harnessing your purpose to achieve authentic happiness in a consumption-driven economy. Dr. Whelan talks about the etymology of thrifting, the benefits of purposeful living, and how to balance your personal and professional endeavors.

In this, the 100th episode of Psychcast, Nick Andrews talks with Lorenzo Norris, MD, MDedge Psychiatry editor in chief, about the January front-page article in Clinical Psychiatry News that featured Matthew E. Seaman, MD, an emergency physician with depression who took his own life. The article describes the Dr. Seaman faced. Later, Christine B.L. Adams, MD, a psychiatrist who practices in Louisville, Ky., discusses her book, “Living on Automatic: How Emotional Conditioning Shapes Our Lives and Relationships” (Santa Barbara: Praeger, 2018), with Dr. Norris. Take-home points from Dr. Adams Children learn emotional patterns in families. These behaviors get reinforced. As children form dating relationships, for example, those patterns continue to be reinforced. People may go on autopilot and have knee-jerk reactions in response to people, which allows them to react emotionally without thinking about what’s necessary for each person. Long-term dynamic psychotherapy can help patients observe what they are doing in relationships and what others are doing. Ultimately, patients can be taught to look at and uncover their automatic responses. Once these patterns are uncovered and moved from the emotional realm to the intellectual realm, they can be interrupted. Genesis and development of the book’s principles Homer B. Martin, MD, a Louisville, Ky.–based adult psychiatrist who worked with Dr. Adams for 30 years, developed the original premise of the book. When he died, his wife asked Dr. Adams, who was his protégé, to finish it. The book is based on the observations made by Dr. Martin during his 40 years of conducting psychotherapy with patients. It is designed to be accessible both to psychiatric trainees as well as to general readers. Dr. Adams started teaching the concepts in the book during a 6-week university class to determine whether the ideas were digestible and useful. Mainstream movies were used to help people learn to observe and identify roles that were emotionally conditioned and to determine how a character’s change in behavior would change the other person. Movies that can be used to help people identify problematic patterns include “Ordinary People,” “Gran Torino,” “The Remains of the Day,” “The Door in the Floor,” and “When Harry Met Sally.” References Yazici E et al. MAN POWER[col. Writ. 9/23/18 (c)’18 Mumia Abu-Jamal] It has been over a generation since the US Senate hearings on the sexual harassment charges of a law professor, Anita Hill, against then-judge, now Supreme Court justice, Clarence Thomas.A lot has changed since then.Or has it?The French have a saying —“Plus ca change…”or, "The more things change, the more they stay the same” The charges now poised against a sitting judge, and possible justice, Brett Kavanaugh, by a psychology professor, Dr, Christine B. Ford, of sexual assault over 30 years ago, shows us that things have changed very little. For power remains a mostly male prerogative, and women, unless they act as man-like as possible, are, mote often than not, treated like children: seen and not heard. For at the nexus between law and power, lies the courts, one of the last, mighty bastions of male power. The remarkable ‘Me Too’ movement may have enormous power in the realm of culture (think Hollywood), but Law remains a largely (white) male preserve. Still.Women, the majority of the US population, are not the majority of political leaders, don’t earn the highest incomes and aren’t paid wages equal to men. In other words, their power is quite limited. They are, however, the highest number of law students in the country, so that a day is coming when they will dominate the field. But not today. Man Power still reigns in politics and law, and unless I miss my guess, in the next few days, we shall see Brett Kavanaugh don the dark robe of a junior justice of the US Supreme Court.  —(c)’18maj
