Listen to the full episode Listen to the full episode on iTunes If you have been told menopause is just hot flashes, aging, and something you have to "push through," this episode will challenge that entire narrative. In this episode, I sit down with Maria Claps and Kristin Johnson, the founders of Wise and Well and authors of The Great Menopause Myth. Maria is an FDN practitioner, and Kristin is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner board-certified in holistic nutrition. They are plainspoken friends, practitioners, and menopausal women themselves who are deeply passionate about helping women thrive in midlife. Maria and Kristin combine clinical experience, personal experience, nutrition, lifestyle strategies, lab testing, mindset coaching, and hormone replacement therapy education to help women understand what is really happening during perimenopause and menopause. In this conversation, we talk about why hormone health matters far beyond symptom relief. We discuss estrogen receptors, hormone replacement therapy, estradiol, estriol, cyclical progesterone dosing, hormone cycling, senescent cells, aging, brain health, vascular health, hair, joints, and the myths that continue to keep women confused and under-supported. This episode is for any woman who wants a more nuanced, educated, and honest conversation about menopause, HRT, bioidentical hormones, and what it means to truly age well. In The Full Episode, We Cover: Why hormone replacement therapy may impact overall health beyond hot flashes How estrogen receptors are found throughout the body, including areas like the eyes and ears Why optimal hormone levels may support hair, joints, brain health, vascular health, and quality of life How hormone cycling may better mimic the body's natural rhythms Why Maria and Kristin prefer cyclical progesterone dosing over static hormone dosing How static hormone dosing may contribute to breakthrough bleeding, water retention, or other unwanted symptoms Why estradiol is often misunderstood and feared despite its potential benefits How high doses of estriol may cause unwanted effects in some women Why topical progesterone may be helpful for women who do not tolerate oral progesterone well Why hormone health matters beyond symptom management How The Great Menopause Myth offers a different perspective on menopause and aging Why many women still receive inadequate medical support during menopause How misconceptions about hormone therapy can leave women isolated and misinformed Why more research is needed using bioidentical hormones How upcoming studies may compare traditional HRT to physiologic hormone restoration Why achieving hormone levels closer to a healthy younger woman may be beneficial for some women How proper hormone cycling may support lighter periods and fewer PMS symptoms Why the current narrative around menopause can hurt women Sponsors Head to cozyearth.com and use my code HORMONES for 20% off sitewide! What if the foods marketed as “healthy” are actually contributing to the very symptoms so many women are struggling with today? In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Mariza sits down with Julia Putzeys, certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and founder of the Trash Panda app, to expose the hidden reality of ultra-processed foods and how they impact energy, hormones, metabolism, mood, inflammation, and long-term health. Together, they unpack the confusing world of food marketing, ingredient labels, food additives, artificial flavors, seed oils, and the growing prevalence of ultra-processed foods in the modern food supply. Julia shares her own journey from believing she was eating healthy to discovering how many seemingly nutritious products were filled with ingredients that offered little nourishment and often contributed to poor health outcomes. They also discuss the powerful mindset shift from calorie counting and restriction toward nourishment, nutrient density, and real food. As mothers, both Dr. Mariza and Julia share practical strategies for helping children develop a healthier relationship with food while avoiding the traps of hyper-palatable, addictive processed products. If you've ever felt overwhelmed at the grocery store or questioned whether the foods in your pantry are actually supporting your health, this episode offers practical guidance and empowering tools to help you make more informed choices. You'll often hear host Jamie Belz say that the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) program changed her life. In this follow-up roundtable episode of the Body Wisdom Podcast, Jamie welcomes back three current NTP students, Michlind Wierman, Alyson Voltz, and Katie Lyche, for an honest, encouraging, and insightful conversation about what has changed since they last joined her on the show. When these women first appeared on the podcast, they were only a few months into their studies with the Nutritional Therapy Association's May 2025 cohort, sharing what they were learning and how the Foundations of Health were already beginning to shift their perspectives. Now, nearly a year later and just weeks away from graduation, they're back to reflect on how the NTP program has deepened their confidence, transformed their personal health, and equipped them to help others pursue true wellness. From blood sugar regulation and nutrient-dense eating to sleep, hydration, digestion, stress, movement, and bio-individuality, this conversation is full of simple but powerful reminders that health does not have to be complicated. In fact, some of the biggest changes came from the smallest, most practical shifts. Hear how these soon-to-be practitioners have experienced real-life transformation through foundational nutrition and lifestyle support: Michlind shares how eating breakfast, balancing blood sugar, prioritizing protein, and improving sleep gave her more stable energy and renewed confidence in helping others reclaim their health. Katie reflects on how the NTP program helped her better understand digestion, Crohn's disease, sleep struggles, nervous system regulation, and the simple habits that have made a meaningful impact in daily life. Alyson talks about applying nutritional therapy principles to marathon training, hydration, electrolyte balance, blood sugar stability, and her future work in radiation therapy. Together, they discuss: What surprised them most as they moved through the program and began working with practice clients. How blood sugar regulation affects everyone, not just those with a diabetes diagnosis. Why sleep is one of the most underrated foundations of health and how better sleep starts first thing in the morning. The real-life power of simple habits like post-meal walks, grounding, balanced meals, hydration, minerals, and eating enough protein. How the live classroom environment, instructors, discussion forums, and student community make the NTP experience so unique. Why bio-individuality matters so much and how what works for one person may not work the same way for another. The importance of making small, sustainable changes instead of chasing all-or-nothing health goals. This episode is packed with practical wellness takeaways, personal stories, and encouraging insight for anyone who wants to feel better but doesn't know where to start. If you've ever wondered whether small changes really matter, this conversation is your reminder that they do. Often, the most powerful shifts in health come from simple daily choices practiced with consistency and intention. Tune in for an inspiring look at what happens when people learn to honor bio-individuality, build on the Foundations of Health, and take ownership of their wellness one step at a time. What if healing didn't have to feel so hard? In today's episode, I'm sitting down with Whitney, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who works with women living with autoimmune conditions (including Hashimoto's), and who shares a message I deeply believe in: health doesn't have to be rigid to be effective. This conversation felt like a deep exhale. We talk about what it means to do health softer, stepping away from all-or-nothing rules, fear-based protocols, and the constant pressure to “optimize,” and instead coming back to real food, nervous system support, intuition, and self-trust. Whitney shares her own journey with Hashimoto's, alopecia, grief, and perfectionism and how those experiences shaped the way she now supports women in healing. We also weave in my own story with burnout, thyroid health, trying to conceive and learning (the hard way) that you can't force your body into wellness. In this episode, we explore: - What doing health softer actually looks like in real life - Entrepreneurship as a mom of three- Why rigid rules can create more stress (and slow healing)- Letting go of health identities that no longer serve you- Why learning to trust your body again changes everything- How nervous system regulation plays a role in autoimmune health- Actual thyroid labs to ask your doctor about

In Episode 61, we learned that blood sugar dysregulation is a compounding factor at the root of nearly every metabolic disease or condition. While the science behind that statement can get complicated, balancing blood sugar doesn't have to be. In this “Quick Tips” episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, Ashley Lawrence, NTP—your “Blood Sugar Bestie”— returns to share her top five blood sugar tips you can start using today. Ashley is the founder of Magic and Wellness and a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner passionate about helping women finally crack the code on their energy, mood, and hormones by addressing blood sugar first. Her approach blends science, strategy, and sparkle—making healthy habits not only doable but actually fun. In this episode: Protein-rich, savory breakfasts that stabilize energy, reduce cravings, and stop the 2:30 slump Why you should avoid eating naked carbs—and how to pair carbs with protein, fat, or fiber for steady glucose Simple movement after meals like squats and pushups during bathroom breaks or 15-minute power walks after meals How stress and poor sleep drive insulin resistance, plus practical hacks to calm cortisol and get better rest Why front-loading carbs earlier in the day improves sleep, energy, and overall metabolic health They also get real about practical swaps—like leftovers for breakfast, smarter chip and chocolate choices, and even adding butter or flax to balance out carbs. Remember, it's not about perfection; it's about small, consistent upgrades that add up to lasting freedom. If you've ever wondered how to fix fatigue, cravings, mood swings, or PCOS symptoms at their root, these simple steps are where to start for practical, real-life strategies to balance your blood sugar without the overwhelm. Parents are asking a fair question: is what's on the school tray really food? In this episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz and guest Shari Gilford, NTP (Full Table Nutrition) open the lunchbox and get practical about raising healthier kids—at school and at home. The conversation swings from frustrations to solutions. Listeners will hear why many “kids' foods” are hyper-processed, hyper-palatable, and nutrient-void—and how families can pivot to real, brain-fueling meals without perfectionism or overwhelm. Shari Gilford is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who helps children and families build nutrition habits for lifelong health. Through Full Table Nutrition, she educates and inspires families to enjoy fresh, whole foods and be nourished for life. Diagnosed with hereditary kidney disease at age 11, she understands how poor health can disrupt childhood—and why preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes (a leading cause of kidney disease) matters. Her mission is to help transform the health of an entire generation. In this episode, expect: Clear, compassionate guidance on sugar, dyes, and ultra-processed “food-like products,” including why kids average ~17 teaspoons of added sugar/day, how that relates to focus, mood, and classroom behavior, and why protein-first breakfasts change the school day. Practical lunchbox wins: muffin frittatas; meatball “muffins”; leftover taco meat with crunchy chips; tuna or salmon salad for omega-3 brain power; beef sticks; hard-boiled eggs; colorful produce that packs and keeps. Picky-eater strategies that actually work: involve kids in choosing veggies (beet or grated carrot salads, jicama “dippers”), taste-training away from constant sweetness, and fun “compare & prepare” nights to find favorite veggie textures. Smart swaps & step-downs: the sugar-cube visual (4 g = 1 cube), gradual transitions from sweetened to unsweetened peanut butter and yogurt, and moving from juice to whole fruit. A simple at-home experiment kids love: three days of protein-strong breakfasts vs. one high-sugar morning—then track energy, mood, focus, and “battery level.” Parent empowerment: how to teach kids the “why,” build a two-week rotation of packable meals, and make real food doable on busy school mornings. This conversation is hopeful and hands-on—less about guilt, more about doing the next right thing with real food that steadies minds, builds bodies, and sets kids up to thrive. You'll often hear host Jamie Belz, FNTP, MHC say that the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) program changed her life. In this fun, personal, and insightful roundtable episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, Jamie sits down with three current NTP students to share how the program is already transforming their health, their families, and their futures. Just over three months into their studies with the Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA), these students are proving how powerful it is to learn the Foundations of Health—digestion, nutrient-dense diet, blood sugar regulation, sleep, stress, movement, and hydration. No band-aid fixes here—this is about getting to the root cause of health and disease, and honoring the truth of bio-individuality: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to wellness. Discover how nutrition and lifestyle foundations are changing lives in real time: Michlind shares her passion for filling the nutrition gap in youth who have aged out of foster care, parents reuniting with their children, and anti-human-trafficking recovery programs. Katie, a culinary pro living with Crohn's disease, explains how bio-individual nutrition transformed her gut health and daily life. Alyson opens up about her journey from residential eating disorder treatment to vibrant health through nutrient-dense, whole foods and the power of bio-individuality. Together, they open up about: The sleep stages and circadian rhythm hacks that blew their minds. Why digestion truly is the cornerstone of health—and how even chewing changes everything. The myths of the low-fat movement, the truth about fats and gallbladder health, and how diet culture has failed us. Simple, practical wins you can try today—like apple cider vinegar before meals, soaking and sprouting grains, or turning off screens before bed. What it really means to be your own health advocate when mainstream solutions fall flat. This episode is packed with nutrition tips, digestion insights, and inspiring stories of transformation. If you've ever thought, “It's all too much—where do I start?” this conversation will offer a variety of starting points as well as some of the science backing the foundational teachings of the NTA. Tune in, laugh with us, and get inspired by the next generation of Nutritional Therapy Practitioners who are already changing the world with the truth that food really is medicine and while "UNhealth" might be normal, it's certainly not the only way to go. What if being "so busy” is why you're carrying stubborn low belly fat that just won't budge—no matter how clean you eat or how much you move? Let's talk about “The Monster” of all distractions! We live in an age of endless input: podcasts, social media, news updates, YouTube rabbit holes — even “healthy” content can become unhealthy when it overwhelms the nervous system and keeps us in perpetual consumption mode with constant micro-stressors. In this third episode of the four-part Distraction Detox series, Jamie Belz unpacks the science of content overload, how dopamine-driven input loops sabotage focus, and why consuming too much information is quietly destroying your energy and your health. With insights from neuroscience, the Foundations of Health, and practical workshop steps. We'll talk about why your mind feels scattered, why your body feels stuck in survival mode, and why your health foundations—digestion, blood sugar, sleep, stress, and movement—can't fully reset when you're drowning in constant input. This isn't about doing more. It's about recognizing what's stealing your focus and sabotaging your biology. And most importantly—it's about learning how to reclaim your attention so you can think clearly, rest deeply, and finally see your body respond the way you want it to. If you've been feeling "dizzy busy" and like you're slowly fading under the weight of too much noise, this episode will be your first step toward breathing again. ___________________ After listening, come back for these "pick your own adventure" action steps: Tech-Free Meal — Make at least one meal per day phone-free and TV-free. Notice the difference in digestion, conversation, and presence. Screen-Free Morning Start — No screens for the first 30–60 minutes after waking. Replace with stretching, prayer, journaling, or simply being quiet with your coffee. Sleep Reset — Turn off all screens at least one hour before bed and replace with reading, light stretching, or talking with someone in your house. Digital Sabbath — Pick one half-day (or full day if brave!) this week where you intentionally go without TV, social media, or streaming. Prune the Feed — Unfollow, unsubscribe, or mute 10 accounts, channels, or subscriptions that don't serve your health, peace, or purpose. Notification Audit — Turn off all non-essential notifications for the week. No more Pavlovian dings pulling at your nervous system. Replacement Habit — Every time you feel the urge to scroll, swap it with one Foundation of Health-aligned action: drink water, walk outside, deep breathe, or prep a healthy snack. Family Challenge — Try one screen-free family activity this week: board games, a walk, cooking together, or even sitting in the living room without the TV. Digital Curfew — Set a hard stop each night where the phone goes on the charger in another room. Give your nervous system permission to downshift. Track the Scroll — Keep a small notebook or notes app log this week. Every time you catch yourself scrolling mindlessly, jot down time + feeling. Awareness is the first step to reclaiming energy. *NOTE: We are NOT trying to drive you to more screens, but these are the comedy bits Jamie mentioned - - - because sometimes, laughter IS the best medicine. :-) Nate Bargatze - SNL - George Washington's Dream Nate Bargatze - SNL - George Washington's Dream 2 Please share this with someone who might need to hear it. What happens when a 16-year-old boy runs away from chemotherapy—and survives? In this gripping episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, Jamie Belz sits down with Billy Best, the teen who became a national sensation in 1994 when he fled conventional cancer treatment in search of something different. Diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, Billy rejected chemotherapy after watching it ravage his aunt's health and instead placed his trust in faith, intuition, and the wisdom of thousands of everyday people who reached out to introduce him to a whole new world of natural healing. Billy's story is more than a medical anomaly—it's a powerful testimony of medical freedom, holistic healing, and the suppressed potential of natural medicine. His healing protocol included nutritional therapy, Essiac tea, and 714X lymphatic injections, along with a radical mindset shift, spiritual surrender, and a deep belief in the body's ability to heal. Within months, his cancer was gone. Billy didn't just survive. He healed. And in the early days of his recovery, he believed—with everything in him—that his story would change the world. That people would wake up. That natural medicine would finally be heard. That the truth would matter. But it didn't. Instead, Billy faced the crushing reality of censorship, media manipulation, and corporate control. His miraculous outcome wasn't celebrated—it was buried. Stories were pulled at the last minute. Reporters were silenced. And the very system that claims to be searching for a cure wanted nothing to do with the one he'd found. In this episode, you'll discover: The viral true story behind Billy Best's escape from chemotherapy What 714X is, how it works, and why it's banned in the U.S. How bio-individuality, nutrition, and mindset played key roles in his healing The power of belief, faith, and spirituality in the healing process Why Billy believed he'd found the cure for cancer—and what happened when no one wanted it The disturbing link between pharma-funded media, cancer fundraising, and censorship Insight into Codex Alimentarius, glyphosate, GMOs, and the global food agenda Why we must reclaim health freedom and medical sovereignty now more than ever Billy also speaks candidly about the emotional aftermath—how addiction, trauma, and grief shaped the decades following his recovery—and why he's still fighting, 30 years later, to help others awaken, question, and heal. This is more than a survival story. It's a raw, unflinching testimony of what happens when someone dares to trust their gut, break the rules, and walk a path no one else will. And it's a heartbreaking reminder that sometimes, even when you've found the truth, the world just isn't ready for it. Whether you're a practitioner, cancer survivor, or someone seeking health freedom, this conversation is a must-listen. Sunburns aren't just about forgetting your sunscreen—they're often the result of deeper imbalances rooted in what you're eating, how your cells are built, and whether your body is equipped to handle the heat. In this episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, Jamie Belz unpacks the science behind sunburn, seed oils, and vitamin D deficiency—and how what you eat may be making your skin more vulnerable to UV damage. You'll learn how omega-6 PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) from common seed oils get embedded in your skin's cell membranes and oxidize under sunlight, leading to inflammation, skin damage, and slower healing. Jamie breaks down how to build true sun resilience using the Foundations of Health—including nutrient-dense fats, zinc, vitamin C, magnesium, and functional sun exposure strategies. You'll walk away with a fresh perspective on: Why French fries and chips might be making you burn faster How to ditch toxic sunscreen without sacrificing protection The critical role of vitamin D synthesis and how to support it safely How to balance omega-6 and omega-3 fats for better skin and lower inflammation What your cell membranes are really made of—and how to nourish them naturally Sunshine doesn't just make vitamin D—it makes you happy. And it might just save your skin, if you support it from within. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says, "I don't want to tell you what you can and cannot eat. I just want you to know what you're eating." Today's episode is about providing solutions to help you cut out the middleman and take control so you KNOW what you're feeding your family - and can support local, small family farms along the way. In this information-packed episode of the Nutritional Therapy & Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz welcomes Alexia Kulwiec, Executive Director of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, for a solution-focused conversation on how to legally source raw milk, pasture-raised meat, and nutrient-dense whole foods directly from local farmers. We're not just talking about what not to eat—this is your real-world roadmap to clean food access in a system that often seems stacked against us and our access to nutrient-dense foods from local farmers. From raw cheese loopholes and herdshares to custom meat processing, cottage food laws, and buying club tips, we explore how families can cut through red tape and bring real, nutrient-dense, ethically raised, and legally protected food to the table. Whether you've been making “egg deals in gas station parking lots” or just trying to figure out how to find a trustworthy source for raw milk, this episode is both empowering and practical. Alexia explains: Why it's so hard to legally access raw dairy and clean meat in many states How federal and state food laws are designed to favor industrial agriculture over local farms What legal loopholes consumers and small farms are using (herdshares, custom exempt meat, cottage food laws) The truth about organic certification (and why it's not the gold standard) What you need to know about raw cheese, pastured poultry, and produce exemptions Where to start if you're ready to vote with your dollar and support regenerative food systems You'll also hear actionable tips on: Navigating state-specific food laws Understanding the difference between “grass-fed” and “pasture-raised” How to talk to your farmer—and what questions to ask How to legally join or form a food buying club, private membership association, or herdshare This episode is packed with legal insight, food freedom advocacy, and practical strategies for any parent, health-seeker, or food rebel looking to build a better grocery cart—one local farm at a time. In this rich and revealing episode of the Nutritional Therapy and Wellness Podcast, host Jamie Belz welcomes the legendary Sally Fallon Morell, author of Nourishing Traditions and founding president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, for an eye-opening conversation that blends ancestral nutrition, holistic health, and spiritual alignment in today's toxic food and medical culture. Together, they unpack the roots of nutritional wisdom, challenge mainstream health narratives, and dive into controversial yet essential topics including raw milk, vaccine injury, the decline of small family farms, and why butter (not margarine) belongs on your plate. Sally also shares the spiritual significance of honoring the body as a temple, discusses the dietary crisis facing modern society, and offers practical advice to reclaim your family's health. Critical topics include: • The difference between raw milk vs. pasteurized milk and the science behind why raw milk supports digestion, immunity, and childhood development • The impact of vaccines on child health, including SIDS, chronic illness, and Sally's perspective on medical freedom • The decline of small family farms and why local, regenerative agriculture must be preserved • Why traditional animal fats like butter, liver, and fish eggs are essential for hormonal health, fertility, and brain development • How processed foods, protein powders, and synthetic vitamins are silently damaging our population • Sally's perspective on the spiritual roots of nourishment, including Biblical insights into food, the sacredness of the body, and how nutrition aligns with God's design • The legacy of Dr. Weston A. Price and the principles behind his research on indigenous diets and generational health • Practical tips to start your real food journey, like the one-minute fix that could radically improve your family's health: making your own salad dressing Jamie also opens up about her personal transformation from following mainstream health advice to finding healing through the Nutritional Therapy Association and Weston A. Price teachings—especially after a vaccine injury in her own family. The episode ends with a bold, hope-filled vision for the future of food, faith, and functional nutrition, including Sally's call for churches to reawaken to the importance of the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit. Whether you're an NTP, parent, homesteader, church leader, or just someone seeking truth in a world of health confusion, this episode will inspire and empower you to live nourished, informed, and aligned—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. What happens when two of the most influential organizations in natural health—the Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA) and the National Health Federation (NHF)—come together? In this powerful one-off episode, fresh off the NHF Conference, Jamie Belz and Mike Belz unpack the most eye-opening moments, shocking revelations, and inspiring calls to action from a weekend spent with an incredible organization passionately fighting for our health freedoms since 1955. In this episode: The history and mission of the NHF How the FDA and other agencies are restricting natural health practices Why bio-individuality must be protected "If I find something that works well for me in my personal health journey - and I'm not harming anyone else - who should be allowed to tell me I cannot choose that methodology?" What you can do right now to make a difference This episode is a megaphone for the movement—a rallying cry for anyone ready to stand up, speak out, and take their health into their own hands. We have worked so hard to get to where we are today - and the future looks bright - but WE need to back those leading the charge.
