Jargon: We Love To Hate It

Head on over to plainlanguage.gov, and you'll find a helpful table, dedicated to simplifying and demystifying military jargon. On one side of the table, there's the jargon term, and on the other, its plain language equivalent. “Arbitrarily deprive of life”? Actually just means “kill people.” “Render nonviable”? Also means “kill people.” “Terminate with extreme prejudice”? “Kill people.”    This table is just one of many resources on plainlanguage.gov—from checklists to plain language training to thesauruses. The website was created by an unfunded government group of plain language activists who make it their mission to translate government communications into regular old, plain language.  But jargon isn't just a government problem. It pops up in nearly every field, and it seems like it annoys most of us. So why do we use it? And is there anything actually good about it?   This episode was inspired by a question from a listener, Jafar, who asked about the word “recrudescence” and why we tend to use fancy words when simple ones would work just fine. If you have a question about a word or phrase, leave us a voicemail! The number is 929-499-WORD, or 929-499-9673. Or, you can always send an email to podcasts@sciencefriday.com.  A transcript of this episode is being processed. It will be available within one week. Guests:  Joe Kimble is a plain language advocate and professor emeritus at WMU-Cooley Law School. David Lipscomb is Director of the Writing Center at Georgetown University, and Vice Chair of the Center for Plain Language. Alejandro Martínez García is a researcher at the National Research Council in Italy. Footnotes & Further Reading: For a challenge, try to explain science using only 1,000 of the most common words.  For all your plain language writing needs, take a look at plainlanguage.gov.  Learn more about the history of the plain language movement in the United States.  Read a study on how our brains react to concrete vs. abstract language. Read more about how jargon affects citations in scientific papers. Credits:  This episode was produced by Johanna Mayer and Senior Producer and Editor Elah Feder. Daniel Peterschmidt is our composer. Nadja Oertelt is our Chief Content Officer. Special thanks to Jana Goldman, Bill Lutz, and especially Karen Schriver for background information on the plain language movement.

Facebook is changing its terms of service! Not unusual in and of itself, but the company has also taken the unusual step of notifying its users of the exact section to be changed. As it turns out, though the change is small (and perhaps unnecessary), it goes along with big discussions happening at Facebook and Google; discussions revolving around what to do...about Australia. We don't come from a land down under, but that land's "unique" legal structures often least to excellent topics...in Virtual Legality. Speaking of the Arts

Today’s episode is about a new coalition recently formed to help support agencies during the pandemic. The coalition is called PAMAC, which stands for the Performing Arts Managers and Agents Coalition. This is a group of more than 150 artist managers, booking agents and independent producers in the performing arts industry, with support from 16 arts service organizations, including Americans for the Arts and the League of American Orchestras. In their own words: “PAMAC has united our sector with a mission of working together in collective action to advocate for arts support relief amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. We are bringing our message to Congressional leaders to urge them to legislate for extensions and recapitalization of funding for the entire arts sector." Joining me to talk about PAMAC is Laura Dunaway and Cindy Liu, both from Park Avenue Artists. Laura Dunaway joined Park Avenue Artists in 2016. Prior to joining PAA, Laura was an agent with United Talent Agency (formerly The Agency Group) where she booked a very diverse roster of artists such as Alison Balsom, Jake Shimabukuro, Jane Krakowski, Kishi Bashi, Snarky Puppy, and many more with orchestras and music venues/series all across North America. Cindy Liu joined Park Avenue Artists in 2018, as artist manager on the teams of Joshua Bell, Daniela Liebman, Ryan Silverman, and Larisa Martínez. As of this recording, the Coalition has received over 10,000 signatures and you can visit https://change.org/artsrelief to learn more about how to support their mission. Full disclosure, I immediately signed up when I heard about it and I encourage our listeners to do so as well. Please enjoy my conversation with Cindy and Laura. In this episode we meet Rich Myer (https://twitter.com/remyers_) s of mesh networking company GoTenna (https://gotenna.com) . Rich is developing the Lot49 (https://globalmeshlabs.org/files/Lot49%20Protocol%20Whitepaper%20-%20DRAFT%200.8.5_20190611.pdf) protocol, which both allows Lightning transactions over a local mesh network, and uses Bitcoin incentives to increase adoption of the network. Rich and I discuss the history of wireless networking and how P2P meshes could turn out to be critical in a time of crisis; why and to what extent we can consider our contemporary networks compromised through what Rich calls 'The Eye of Sauron' problem; and how Lot49 enables an internet-minimized micropoayments soltuion which could function in a distressed, post-Covid environment.
