Welcome to The Inner Game of Change, the podcast where we explore the unseen forces that shape how we lead, adapt, and thrive in the face of change and transformation. In today's episode, we explore a powerful way of thinking and working that helps people navigate complexity, solve tough problems, and grow through structured learning — the Improvement Kata.My guest is Tracy Defoe — a lifelong adult educator, Kata coach, and passionate advocate for deliberate, reflective learning at work. Based in Vancouver, Canada, Tracy shares her deep insights into how the Kata practice — inspired by Toyota's continuous improvement approach — helps individuals and teams move forward, even when the way ahead is unclear. We unpack what the Kata actually is, how it works, and why it's far more than a business tool — it's a mindset shift. We also touch on the role of psychological safety, the difference between goals and challenges, and how leaders can become coaches who build capability, not just compliance. If you're curious about how to embed continuous improvement in a way that feels human, sustainable, and empowering — this one is for you.I am grateful to have Tracy chatting with me today. About TracyAims to make you smarter about learning.Adult Education professional specializing in learning at work. Give to help Chris continue Truce It all started with a meeting over fancy donuts. Paige Patterson and a friend met together to plot the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention. Before that time, the SBC had been more theologically diverse (though, not necessarily racially diverse due to its founding as a group that desired slavery). But if this group of fundamentalists was going to get a whole denomination to turn their way, they'd have to be clever. It would take time. Their scheme involved getting fundies elected into high office who could then turn committees and sub-committees to their side. It's a story of a minority group gaining control of a large organization, and steering it toward their vision of what it means to be a Christian. Listen in as she provides advice for leaders on how to communicate effectively to make people feel heard, understood, and empowered.  Takeaways Jargon and acronyms can create power dynamics and exclude others in the workplace. Plain language and understanding the audience are crucial for effective communication. User testing is essential to ensure that communication is understood by the intended audience. Biases in communication can have a significant impact, and training is needed to address them.  Effective communication should make people feel heard, understood, and empowered. Public health campaigns should aim to empower individuals and address their fears and anxieties. Connection, self-awareness, and empathy are crucial in effective communication. In this solo podcast, Bryan provides an introduction to heat pumps, explaining the basics of how they work and key considerations in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. He starts by reviewing some core HVAC principles - that heat moves from higher temperatures to lower temperatures, the three main methods of heat transfer, and the concept that temperature is really just a measure of molecular movement. He then explains that a heat pump works by taking heat from a place that doesn't matter, like the outdoors, and putting it where it is wanted, like inside a home. This is the opposite of an air conditioner. The only difference in the actual equipment is the addition of a reversing valve to change the direction of refrigerant flow and a defrost control board. He talks about the need to defrost the outdoor coil when ice builds up and what happens in that mode. Some key challenges and design considerations he covers when using heat pumps include: dealing with defrost and where the melt water will go, keeping the outdoor unit free of snow, supplemental heating systems for when the unit can't keep up, increased electrical load, and factors like the climate zone, home efficiency, electricity prices, and infrastructure. He emphasizes that with good design focused around heat pumps, they can work efficiently even in cold climates. Topics covered: ·        Basics of heat transfer ·        How heat pumps move heat ·        Reversing valve and defrost board ·        Defrost challenges ·        Supplemental heat ·        Sizing and design considerations ·        Use in cold climates   Learn more about the 5th Annual HVACR Training Symposium at https://hvacrschool.com/Symposium24. Dr. Katelyn Jetelina has taken her modest public health email for friends and family and fashioned it into a public health powerhouse of a newsletter and significant force of influence for millions. Yes, that little newsletter, "Your Local Epidemiologist," grew from a personal email list to over 330 million followers seeking clear guidance amid uncertainty during the pandemic.Dr. Jetelina sits down with Carrie to reflect on how we had to learn to navigate the firehose of pandemic information. She turned that effort toward teaching, translating complex science for diverse audiences through an empathetic and apolitical lens. No, she's not trained in communications. Dr. Jetelina is a professor, and embracing that role free of judgment set the stage for her personal rise to prominence. As culture continues to evolve, Jetelina argues public health must improve its communications capacity and community engagement. She's doing her part to move the discussion forward; she now tackles more ideologically charged topics like gun violence, though still approaches these issues through her solutions-focused, nonpartisan lens.Throughout the tumult, Jetelina has stayed anchored by her commitment to equip trusted messengers and meet people where they are. Her trailblazing work shows scientific facts alone don't shape opinions; we must appeal to shared values. She calls us all to reimagine public health as a collective mission vital to our shared future. Our great thanks to Dr. Jetelina for joining Mission Forward this week.
