(mg)

Další plnotučná epizoda podcastové revue Noty Vole nemohla začít jinak. Festival Rock for People odhalil své trumfy pro příští rok. A my jsme dopodrobna rozebrali, co na současné festivalové mapě znamená příjezd Linkin Park. Prolistujeme listopadový Headliner a doporučíme vám z něj super články. Vrátíme se ke konferenci a hudebnímu setkání Prague Music Week. A pak už tozačne nabírat grády. Franka Turnera, Billyho Woodse a Moor Mother, Miles Kanea i Mylese Kennedyho. Poslední koncert skvělých Met. I závěr největšího českého turné roku.

Humankind's relationship with music can be traced back millions of years and across continents. In Sound Tracks the archaeologist Graeme Lawson unearths some of the oldest instruments, from water-filled pots in Peru from AD700 that chirp like a bird, to bells from a tomb in 5th century China. He argues that music is part of what makes us human. An ancient horn, played from a watchtower on Hadrian's Wall, is a far cry from the modern version the award-winning trumpeter Alison Balsom plays. She is giving the UK premiere of Wynton Marsalis' Trumpet Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra (Barbican on the 11th April; Bristol Beacon on the 12th). This is a contemporary piece that showcases the huge versatility of the trumpet, from the opening pre-historic-sounding wild elephant call to ceremonial fanfare and New Orleans jazz. The celebrated poet John Burnside's new collection, Ruin, Blossom explores what it is to be human as we contemplate our mortality. But even amidst the ruin and death and decay, his words reveal the beauty and hope in the everyday natural world: ‘first sun streaming through the trees … a skylark in the near field, flush with song'.(Extract from Wynton Marsalis' Trumpet Concerto, played by Alison Balsom with the Swedish Radio Orchestra in a concert from 17th February 2024, with permission from the Swedish Radio Orchestra )Producer: Katy Hickman

In the second half of their live chat, Alison Balsom and Sam Mendes discuss what it's like for him to have been everyone's Dad professionally since he was 24 (just don't take his sausage roll); being a woman in a predominantly male art form, changing the paradigm of the trumpet and the spirituality of playing music in church; Sam's transformative memory of Jackson Pollock in Venice and the joy of throwing paint; where emotion lives in their work; the trumpet piece that reflects who you are at any stage of your life; being uningratiating onstage; why Sam was in a kind of dream-state directing Hills of California and what auditioning new-born babies taught him about performers. This week Jonny sees you “the coolest power couple in British theatre” (Jez Butterworth and Laura Donnelly, S3, E8) and raises you one “coolest power couple in British culture”, theatre and film powerhouse Sam Mendes and one of the world's greatest classical and jazz trumpeters, Alison Balsom. In the first interview they've ever given as a couple, they treat SDJ Live at Jermyn Street Theatre to a voyage round their remarkable life and times: what is was for them both to be prodigies and whether they miss their younger selves; Alison's calling to play the trumpet and not feeling like a soloist until she'd played the Last Night of the Proms; not feeling like a real film director until Sam directed his first Bond; where doubt exists differently in theatre and in classical music; the search for the perfect chord in art; Alison's recording of her greatest mistake, never being able to duck the hardest challenge and why Simon Russell Beale as Uncle Vanya suddenly couldn't stand up.

This week Seb and Verity chat to multi award-winning, internationally renowned countertenor Iestyn Davies. It just so happens that Iestyn and Verity were at school together so this podcast acts as a catch up after 23 years, gulp. Iestyn was due to be singing the lead in Giulio Cesare at the Met on the evening they recorded, a run which was obviously scuppered by Covid. He chats about his frustrations and despondency this lockdown but also glimmers of hope with exciting projects on the horizon.Iestyn talks about his low-key professional debut at Zurich Opera conducted by Nicholas Harncourt and singing alongside Jonas Kaufman....no big deal right? They also discuss his stint in Farinelli and the King on Broadway, at the Globe theatre and in the West End, including tales of corpsing and Kris Akabusi. At at the end of their conversation, Seb gets a short lesson from Iestyn on improving his falsetto.....it’s fairly harrowing and should possibly come with a health warning. Today’s episode is about a new coalition recently formed to help support agencies during the pandemic. The coalition is called PAMAC, which stands for the Performing Arts Managers and Agents Coalition. This is a group of more than 150 artist managers, booking agents and independent producers in the performing arts industry, with support from 16 arts service organizations, including Americans for the Arts and the League of American Orchestras. In their own words: “PAMAC has united our sector with a mission of working together in collective action to advocate for arts support relief amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. We are bringing our message to Congressional leaders to urge them to legislate for extensions and recapitalization of funding for the entire arts sector." Joining me to talk about PAMAC is Laura Dunaway and Cindy Liu, both from Park Avenue Artists. Laura Dunaway joined Park Avenue Artists in 2016. Prior to joining PAA, Laura was an agent with United Talent Agency (formerly The Agency Group) where she booked a very diverse roster of artists such as Alison Balsom, Jake Shimabukuro, Jane Krakowski, Kishi Bashi, Snarky Puppy, and many more with orchestras and music venues/series all across North America. Cindy Liu joined Park Avenue Artists in 2018, as artist manager on the teams of Joshua Bell, Daniela Liebman, Ryan Silverman, and Larisa Martínez. As of this recording, the Coalition has received over 10,000 signatures and you can visit https://change.org/artsrelief to learn more about how to support their mission. Full disclosure, I immediately signed up when I heard about it and I encourage our listeners to do so as well. Please enjoy my conversation with Cindy and Laura.
