Jyoti Lohman started The Beauty Way, a spa experience and product line to inspire women to pause and be taken care of. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I’m Stephen’s sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today’s episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it’s us, but we’re highlighting ads we’ve written and produced for our clients. So here’s one of those. [AirVantage Heating & Cooling Ad] Stephen Semple: Hey, it’s Stephen Semple. Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, and this week we’ve got a really fun, great interview so we’re not going to be talking to Dave Young this week. We’ve given him yet another week off for Dave. He’s busy with things at the academy in any case. So we’re here with Jyoti Lohman from The Beauty Way, and we had a conversation and there was just so many things that you shared that it was one of these ones where I really have to get you onto the podcast. So this is going to be awesome. But before we get into a bit of the history of the company, tell me a little bit about where the business is today in terms of the success that’s happening because you’ve gotten into some pretty big places where your product is now being sold. Jyoti Lohman: Yeah, I have. Well, I’m so happy to be here, Stephen. I couldn’t wait for this conversation. We had such a great first connection, and I was excited to be doing this with you, so thank you for having me on. Stephen Semple: Oh, and before you go on to that, the funny thing was we discovered I was literally in Austin, Texas. We got on and did a call and not only that, near Dripping Springs, you’re like, “Oh, I’m near Dripping Springs.” I could have drove over and saw you that day. Jyoti Lohman: I know. I love that synchronicity, right? That was our first thing and I was like, “Okay, this is going to be a good one.” Yeah, that was really cool. So my whole mission here has been to inspire women to create that purposeful pause and to feel nurtured and to feel cared for. And where we’re at now, it’s transformed into these signature Beautyway treatments. I’ve got something at the Fairmont here in Austin. So you can have a Beauty Way manicure and pedicure where we’re not only using the products, but there’s these affirmations that we’re saying. And so these really incredible treatments that are full body and soul. We’re launching in Proper Austin here in May. So this is May 1st, so very shortly here, hopefully in time for Mother’s Day. I am working currently on another signature treatment with Miraval Resort here in Austin and they are a company that’s been around for years and a leader in wellness. So creating these signature treatments that are using the products, but also sort of bringing in focus my mission and my purpose of women taking a moment to really care for themselves and how powerful it is to pour into ourselves because we show up for so many people. I couldn’t be happier about where we are and it’s been a windy road. At first it was just kind of selling online, and I’ve been able to get in touch with these major resorts and create something really from my heart that I know people are feeling cared for. Stephen Semple: And the things that you’re doing for the resorts, they’re a little bit unique for each one, aren’t they? Jyoti Lohman: Yeah. So like I said, this experience has been so cool. So the one with Proper, I’ve worked with their lead therapist and their spa director and it’s over months of really fine-tuning what really connects with that resort and what their purpose is and bringing my purpose together and really connecting those dots. So we’re creating these bespoke really treatments for the different resorts. And I’ll be in Miraval next week and they have a fabric of their own, of their own purpose. And so yeah, we’ll be pulling together what The Beauty Way means. And The Beauty Way is a Navajo philosophy and prayer and they call it walking in beauty and it’s walking in balance, harmony, connection with nature and with yourself. So we get to pull in the essence of and the ethos of The Beauty Way and really connect it back to what the property means. Stephen Semple: That’s really interesting. What year did you start the business again? Jyoti Lohman: I worked with a chemist and so I’ve created all of these formulas side by side with a chemist that I work with. So I started when my daughter was about one years old. So about four years ago I started working on the packaging, working on the mantras, working on the ethos, pulling together the inspiration from my mom and her wisdom in self-care that she really taught me and pulling everything together. And then I launched in November of 2023. So it’s been about two and a half years. Stephen Semple: So there was a few years in development launched in November of 2023. You’re in a bunch of locations, right? Jyoti Lohman: Yep. Stephen Semple: Are you able to share with us what you do in sales these days? Jyoti Lohman: Well, I have so many different ways. I’ve got the wholesale, I’ve got influencer marketing, I’ve got D2C sales, I’ve got all these different ones. So we are on track for six figures this year. Stephen Semple: Nice. Nice. Jyoti Lohman: Yes. That is- Stephen Semple: Cool. Jyoti Lohman: Yeah. Very proud of that. Stephen Semple: That’s very exciting. Jyoti Lohman: Yes, very exciting. Very exciting. Stephen Semple: So here’s one of the things I found that was really interesting that you’ve done. So I’m in this coaching program called The Strategic Coach. It’s a quarterly coaching program for entrepreneurs that’s run by Dan Sullivan. And one of the things Dan’s often talking about is taking your services and either turning or adding a product to it or taking your product, adding a service to it. So there’s this melding of service and product that happens. And you’ve done that with the resorts where you’ve got this spa treatment, and you could have just walked in and said, “Hey, I’ve got this treatment and I’ve developed it and it’s really cool and it’s great for people and people love it.” But you went that step further and went, “Well, let’s create this treatment that’s specific to your spa that’s got all this ritual and things.” How did you land on doing that? Jyoti Lohman: It’s actually an interesting story. And again, I just started with a product, but I knew that this was bigger than a product. The product is sort of the vehicle of how I help inspire women to take that moment and to do these treatments. But I was actually at a spa and getting a treatment and there was this… I did this body scrub research. And so they’re doing this body scrub and they’re using a salt. Mine is sugar and they’re using a salt. And I thought, oh, this salt’s a little rough on the body, but it’d be great for a foot scrub. I’m just thinking in my head. And so she says to me, I say, “Well, I love this salt. Do you sell it in your retail? Can I pick this up? I love the way that it feels and this would be a great thing.” And she says, “We don’t sell this. This is just in treatment.” And I literally had this light bulb go, “Wait, this is a perfect retail conversion. I’m getting to use the products, see how it feels. Instead of looking at something on a shelf, I’m getting to experience this and you’re the expert and now I’ve tried it and it’s amazing. I want to be able to buy it.” And I couldn’t. And I went, “Okay, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Let’s bring these two together.” And what I did was I found, I’m not a therapist, so I don’t know all the logistics of treatment. I know my products inside and out and what they do and how they feel and the connection I want you to have with that. So I found a therapist who had been doing treatments for 25 years and she and I created these spa protocols and it was something I had never heard of. I had no idea this was even a thing. People do do this, but I was not familiar with it and I couldn’t buy the thing I wanted to. And I thought, this is amazing. So I created six protocols where I infuse some breath work, I infuse affirmations and then you can use the products. And I thought speaking from an experience, you get to try them and understand how they work and how they feel. And from a business point of view and to speaking to a spa director, here’s your built-in retail conversion. So that was really kind of blending those things, both of those missions for me. Let’s make some money and let’s be successful here and let’s create these treatments so that people can try it and love it and ultimately buy it. And the way that it smells and the way that it feels, our olfactory is so powerful that when you buy this and take it home and you’re using it at home, it sort of brings you back to that moment of calm and connection. Dave Young: Stay tuned. We’re going to wrap up this story and tell you how to apply this lesson to your business right after this. [Using Stories To Sell] Dave Young: Let’s pick up our story where we left off and trust me you haven’t missed a thing. Stephen Semple: One of the things that people don’t realize, scent is really an interesting language because it’s the one sense that is processed differently than the rest of it. It’s- Jyoti Lohman: Totally. Stephen Semple: … very, very highly tied to memory, unbelievably tied to memory. If I bring in theater popcorn and we’re doing an envisioning exercise, something like that, you find yourself, you immediately think movie theater. If we’re popping popcorn, it’s like it’s movie theater or it’s like doing something with the kids, but all of those things immediately come. So it is really interesting that yes, the scent will take a person back to that. But the other thing I find interesting is Dave Young, who I often do this podcast with, he teaches a course at the Wizard Academy just outside Dripping Springs called Portals and the Languages of the Mind. Jyoti Lohman: That sounds interesting. Stephen Semple: And scent is a language. Jyoti Lohman: Yeah. Stephen Semple: So is speaking, so is touching. And what’s interesting is you’re now creating a product which links into- Jyoti Lohman: Sensory. Stephen Semple: … all of those things. Jyoti Lohman: A sensory experience. Stephen Semple: Which makes it very- Jyoti Lohman: Yes. Stephen Semple: And very sticky. You’re hitting on multiple fronts. You’re hitting it here and you’re hitting it here and you’re hitting it here, which really is super interesting, super interesting. Jyoti Lohman: Well, I’d love to take credit that I’ve had this business degree and I’ve studied all the psychology, but it’s really I’m so guided by intuition, and I just had this light bulb that went, oh, my gosh, this will tie back and you can have that experience at home and here’s how we do it. We get you involved and experiencing it. And I created this scent. It’s this really interesting scent and it’s a citrus. Stephen Semple: So you purposely right out of the gate thought about scent when it came to this. Jyoti Lohman: Absolutely. Well, I’m very sensitive to scent, extremely sensitive. If something is very overpowering, I have an immediate headache and it’s kind of always been that way. If my husband’s using a new hand soap, I’m like, “Uh.” So I was really, really intentional with the scent, but I understand the connection that scent has and the power that scent has to make us feel a certain way. And so when I was creating this scent, I didn’t want to do it unscented because I think the sensory experience of the scent is so powerful. So I didn’t use anything synthetic so that it really was a natural scent. And it’s probably one of the things I’m most proud of as the physical product because it’s something that if you’re sensitive to smell, it’s so light and grounding. It’s got these citrus high notes and it’s got this ginger and pink peppercorn that really makes it sophisticated and grounded. So it kind of covers, I want to say, “It’s very universal,” and so men use it. It’s not overly floral or vanilla or it doesn’t overtake the situation, but you feel it. It’s a very clean kind of sensual scent. And so it really ties people back to that experience. And again, I can’t take too much credit for it except for I just really, I tapped into my intuition and as how I experience things and then knowing that there’s sensitivities and people are just getting more and more sensitive to things as we get more and more manufactured kind of sense. So it was a very intentional part of it to be a feel, a smell and all those sensory pieces. Stephen Semple: And the whole idea of marketing a skincare product through spas and things like that. I did a Episode 207, I did a podcast on Dr. Gross who basically had developed a skin peel and they very, very much were like, he marketed through his own practice, but very much were like, “Okay, we’re going to market this through spas and resorts and things along that lines. Have people experienced this and then they’re going to want to come and follow up and buy our product. And yes, it’s an additional line item and all of those things.” So this path of doing it that way has been proven as being a legitimate way to do this. But then you’re also selling online and through influencers. What have you been doing on the online front? Jyoti Lohman: With bootstrapping a business from the get go and not relying on millions of dollars, but relying on heart and hustle. The path I thought was the wholesale piece is something I… I don’t know if I have control over it. I don’t think I have control over it, but I know that I can connect with people one-on-one and talk to them about the product. The D2C space direct to consumer and website is so hard to tap into without millions of dollars for ads and all of this. And so that’s kind of the strategy that I’ve taken is getting into these bigger resorts, having these sensory experiences, building in that retail conversion. And my D2C business has been supported by my client going to these resorts and seeing it. So that’s been a real strategy for me, again, just sort of really looking at how I shop and where my core customer is. So that’s been my strategy there. And then the influencers, that’s a tricky space and I think it’s changing a lot and my brand is, it’s such a tricky space. Stephen Semple: It is. Very tricky space. Jyoti Lohman: And paying for someone to say it one or two times is not going to get you anywhere and you have to align. I mean, it seems so simple, but you really, my brand is so authentic. It’s very founder-led marketing. I’m out there, I’m the face of the brand, I want to connect with people, I want to talk about the mission. And so finding people that are really authentic and not suggesting 16 sunscreens in a week just because they have a big following, it’s hard. It’s hard. Stephen Semple: Yeah, it’s hard. Jyoti Lohman: It’s finding those people that really align. And then I’ve done mostly gifting because part of the authenticity of this brand is that people try it and they fall in love with it. And so a lot of these influencers who want thousands of dollars, I want you to love it. And so it’s a slower game, but I find those people that try it and really get that experience and get the purpose behind it. And that’s been successful with more micro influencers, people that have that like 15,000 following because they’ve created a model where people really actually trust what they’re doing. So that’s been really what’s been successful for me. And it’s also just meeting people and showing up and connecting and being your authentic self and not having to be on. I’m never on. This me, this is what you’re getting. So I think people connect with that. And so I’ve had a lot of people just do things with gifting. Speaker 11: Oh, no, no. Speaker 12: What? Speaker 11: I was enjoying this episode. Speaker 12: Don’t worry. Part two’s coming next week. Speaker 11: It better. Dave Young: Thanks for listening to the podcast. Please share us. Whence Came You? - Freemasonry discussed and Masonic research for today's Freemason
This week, we explore the ripple effects of our words and thoughts through "Guard Well the Portals of the Mind," discussing Albert Pike's concept of everlasting vibrations and William James's theory of "idea-motor action" as a sobering reminder to actively banish pessimistic thoughts and invite in the Great Architect. Next, we challenge the notion of Freemasonry as a mere social club with George H. Steinmetz's "The Worthy and Well-Qualified," which argues that Masonic allegories are actually designed to conceal the secret doctrine from the multitude and that the Craft requires genuine intellectual pursuit as a "progressive science". Finally, we share an exciting announcement for the 3rd John Skene Memorial Conference happening August 28th to 30th, 2026, in Burlington, New Jersey; for just $100, Masons and non-Masons alike can enjoy a weekend of fellowship, scholarship, and entertainment honoring America's first Freemason—a highly recommended experience that RJ has personally presented at in the past. As we regather for the second part of this event, Aviv Shahar offers this reflection: “One of the ways I answer the question, ‘What is it like to be in this liminal transition from an epoch that's fading to a new epoch that's emerging?' Well, it's like being in a playground — after I allow myself to relax to the situation. A lot of the time I don't feel relaxed. I feel I need to be something, to do something, to meet a certain need.” Sound familiar? We have been exploring together the shift from one epoch to another, and what that means for us as individuals and as a global community: letting go of what is no longer needed (making space), finding balance and stability while relaxing into the unknown, being open to what is newly possible and upholding in ourselves what we want to nurture into the future. It is easy to grasp these concepts intellectually without them ever hitting “home” for us personally. Far more powerful is to engage these contemplations with our Soul, our faithful guide and companion, designed to see us through these changes. What unfolds here are experimental and experiential ways of exploring these concepts so that we can feel them — literally, in the rigidity of a coiled fist compared to an open hand — and encouraged toward our individual discovery because that is the kind of playground where we learn and discover best. The invitation here is to dive deeper, beyond the brain, into the interiority, into the emotions/heart, into the sensory responses that are activated, or inspired, by contemplation into the questions at hand. The whole of us is the playground, under the management of our Soul, for this exploration, while connecting us to ways of engaging our full system that will serve us well in the times ahead. Discover what it is like for the Soul to facilitate the shift, From > To: From Rigidly Fixed > to Dynamically Evolving From Separated > to Connected From Valuing Things > to Prioritizing Relationships From Anchored in the Known > to Immersed in the Unknown From Reliance on Plans > to Trusting the Process This conversation is part of the continuing Portals discovery into what is emerging on the frontiers of human experience in this time of profound change. And what if actually, this which is now seeking to access that which is latent in us, what if it needs us to relax into not knowing? What if it needs us to relax into playfully discovering?” (Aviv) “One of the contemplations that emerged for me about the idea of separated and connected is that it teaches me to honor that we are separate individuals. And there is a design reason as to why life would want us each to be configured as a unique individual, and there is a design and purposeful reason behind why, along the evolutionary story, we released ourselves from tribal entity where we were homogenous, one unified self, to the discovery of the individuated self over recent centuries. And that there is a reason why this continual evolution is now nudging us to discover a new way of coming together.” (Aviv) RESOURCES MENTIONED Portals of Perception Website Aviv's LinkedIn Aviv's Twitter Aviv's Website Beyond the Collapse – Event Part 2: Separate Yet Connected

My guest for this episode is psychologist and psychotherapist Michael Wilson, who joined me to discuss his recent book, Portals into Deep Imagination: Celtic Mythology, Nature's Year, and the Quest for Soul. The book is an anthology of weekly contemplations and practices for spirituality through the lens of psychology, inspired by the culture and mythology of the Celts in Britain and Ireland and their connection with nature. Following the course of the Celtic year (beginning at Samhain), each weekly chapter offers tales and folklore from Celtic mythology, followed by a suggested practice of meditation and contemplation. It explores the metaphor and symbolism contained in these myths and legends and shows how those themes can be used to examine the nature of the human mind and imagination and the relationship between them. In the interview I begin by talking with Mike about his background and how the idea for the book came about. We discuss the structuring of the book around a yearly cycle and then our conversation broadens a little, exploring the importance of connecting with nature and the relationship between folklore, myth, the imagination, dreams and altered states. You can find out more about Mike and his writing at https://www.michaelwilson.uk.com/. This episode is part 8 in our series with Joe McMoneagle. Joe McMoneagle was a US Army intelligence veteran already before he was chosen to be a part of the psychic intelligence unit at Fort Meade, Maryland, in 1978. He became known as "Remote Viewer No. 1″ within Project Stargate. Project Stargate was the United States' first organized research into psychic phenomena via the Defense Intelligence Agency and contractor SRI International. He is an author and also founder of Intuitive Intelligence Applications Inc. Today, he also teaches Remote Viewing at The Monroe Institute, a leading center in exploring human consciousness. Joe never disappoints. Imagine staring at a black hole… and realizing it might actually be a doorway. Scientists now think some black holes could be wormholes — real portals through space and time. The craziest part? They look so much like black holes that we might have been seeing them for years without knowing it. If that's true, they could lead to faraway parts of the universe… or somewhere even stranger. In this video, we'll explore what that means, the science behind it, and the mind-bending possibilities it opens up. Get ready — space just got a whole lot weirder. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Schauer Thoughts, this week we'll be dissecting the “MAHA Report” as well as it's strategy and “MAHA ELEVATE” proposal. Please know that there will be several more parts to this series so if there's anything you think I didn't get to or is worth emphasizing, I will absolutely be doing follow-ups and want you to hang tight - I very much hear and mirror your concern. Researching this episode has been heartbreaking like none other and I just appreciate you all taking the time to listen. Please review the sources below for all information, it is of the utmost importance right now that we all stay informed. Download Hily Dating App from the App Store or Google Play, or visit https://hily.go.link/jRMKW I do also plan on searching for actionable items and ways to recognize front groups, but I do need some time to collect and format that information. Please know that hope is never lost. Nuance: I do apologize for my poor pronunciation of some medical conditions and other words, I am someone who loves to research outside of a school context so I don't get to hear most of these words spoken out loud by others. I foresee some red-hat-supporters running with this point for “evidence” of me being unintelligent and I'm covering my bases for when that eventually happens. My main reason for pointing this out is not to prevent people making fun of my pronunciation but more of a demonstration on how predictable some people are. Reminder: I love answering questions, if you have an assumption on any of my political stances, please just ask. *Spoiler* I am not a fan of the United States military and have very strong, informed opinions. Damon is out this week, but the show rolls on as Damo, Aaron, and CS1 Burns sit down for a wide-ranging conversation covering everything from Navy policy changes and leadership lessons to deployment experiences, career growth, and why Seafood Newburg somehow became part of the discussion. We discuss LTB reviews, Master Chief pay, recruiting concerns surrounding Genesis, the Murph, the new UFC event fitness requirements, PRT alternate cardio, bad day chits, the CNO's recent email on grooming standards, the absence of women selected for Admiral, the relief of an entire triad in Japan, the Warrior Toughness rollout, and changes to evaluations at terminal paygrades. CS1 Burns shares stories about growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, dealing with the loss of a close friend in high school, his first deployment in Japan, how his views changed as he advanced in rank, and some of the most important leadership lessons he's learned throughout his career. The conversation wraps up with a discussion on radical candor, relationships between Chiefs and First Classes, why leaders should defer to expertise, why different doesn't mean wrong, why failure is sometimes necessary for growth, and this week's Do Better segment featuring a Sailor bypassing the process, a gas station "federal crime" investigation, and a few leadership lessons along the way. We all experience parts of ourselves moving in different directions at the same time. The cells in our bodies continually die as new ones are born. Throughout our lives, we release what no longer serves us and shift our attention toward new opportunities. So, we are no strangers to seeing that something is ending, fading, dying — while at the same time, something else is emerging, arriving, birthing through us. This conversation brings to life the transition from an epoch that's fading to one that's emerging, and explores the soul's journey in placing both within a larger frame, one that recognizes three simultaneous processes: something ending, something emerging, and the liminal space in between. It is within this threshold that we can immerse ourselves in the unknown and embrace our struggles as whole human beings. This journey invites us to expand beyond the familiar impulse to solve problems, and instead to explore options, widen our sense of what's possible, and rewire our ways of seeing and being. The inquiry opens up vast questions, like “Where does the future come from?” — and illuminates latent potentials in humanity and higher states of consciousness. The soul, with its latent memory of the future, transcends the linearity of time in an entangled universe. It can serve as a powerful guide as the transition between epochs intensifies. To navigate these times with resilience and adaptability, we are called to both “hospice” the old epoch and “midwife” the new within ourselves and the world around us. Strategies that help us approach this include: Releasing the conditioning of the old epoch, even as it resists being released Embracing the liminal in-between state and the opportunities it provides Facilitating, ripening and liberating the new epoch as it appears in us This conversation is part of the continuing Portals discovery into what is emerging on the frontiers of human experience in this time of profound change. Information about upcoming special events can be found on the Events page. Also visit and subscribe to our YouTube channel. TWEETABLE QUOTES “The answer to the question, ‘Where does the future come from?,"' is, well, it comes through all of us, each and every one of us, potentially. When you found a way to forgive deeply inside you, a person, or a certain situation, you have released that situation into a new future, rather than being stuck in a historic point of pain. When you come up with a new way of seeing the challenges you are facing, you are literally opening for yourself, and likely for the people around you, a future that was not available before. So, we are each, simply by the definition of being a human at this time on Earth, we are each an active agency for the future.” (Aviv) “Can we find a way to embrace the totality of who we are as humans, and recognize that perhaps there is a way to imagine and envision this crisis point as a birthing crucible. If there is a test in it, the test in it is to live fully in the here and now, in the every moment of what it is that we encounter, whether it's a struggling moment at work, whether it's a struggling moment at home in our relationships, whether it is when we are in the meditation and the deepest prayer we choose to formulate, and refuse almost defiantly, to bypass this moment, to bypass this life.” (Aviv) RESOURCES MENTIONED Portals of Perception Website Aviv's LinkedIn Aviv's Twitter Aviv's Website Beyond the Collapse – Event Part 1: The Soul's Role in Birthing a New World
Dr. Dorie LeSieur on Arcturian Contact, Galactic Akashic Healing, and Light Language Activation Dr. Dorie explains how she blended trauma-informed psychology, family constellation work, and multidimensional/galactic healing into her Galactic Akashic Starseed Family Constellations modality. Dr. Dorie is a psychologist, author, galactic therapist, Akashic reader, and channel of the Arcturian Council of Time. She describes discovering repeating trauma patterns across galactic lives and focusing on healing (not just identifying) galactic trauma to support grounding, mental health, and gift activation. She shares experiences with channeling, starseed loneliness and "being seen," portals in Ohio and grid-work themes, and an intense CE5/contact-regression account involving an Arcturian-related first-contact force. Discussing the "Council of Time," she frames current chaos as timeline work to prevent destructive futures, emphasizing self-love, grounding, collective healing, and that "we are who we are waiting for," then closes with light language and toning for throat/voice activation. This Open Source Startup Podcast episode has our co-hosts Robby and Tim in conversation with Zohar Einy the Co-Founder of agentic SDLC platform Port. They have a few open source projects including ocean which allows third-party systems to integrate with their developer portal.Port is positioning itself as the infrastructure layer for the agentic era, evolving the traditional internal developer portal into what its founders describe as a “system of record for agents.” The company believes the future belongs not to vertical point solutions, but to flexible platforms that organizations control themselves, enabling anyone, from developers to non-technical employees, to become builders. Rooted in the founders' experience of overwhelming developer workflows and ticket volumes, Port aims to centralize engineering context while making both humans and AI agents more self-sufficient. Their hybrid approach combines openness and commercial software, with public roadmaps, community contributions, and open-source integrations helping customers extend the platform while maintaining governance and control. The conversation also explored how AI is reshaping engineering organizations. Port is focused on creating the infrastructure around agents rather than building the agents themselves, providing visibility, permissions, governance, and a unified “context lake” for agent activity. As companies deploy increasing numbers of coding, security, SRE, and product agents, leaders need a control plane to understand what agents are doing and ensure they operate safely. The team is already seeing customers use Port to automate large portions of engineering support workflows, and they believe enterprises are adopting AI-driven workflows as quickly as, or faster than, mid-market companies. Internally, this pace of change requires constant adaptation, particularly across go-to-market teams, where education and flexibility have become more important than rigid playbooks.
Rich and Greg Komen decided they wanted a empire and then went a built it. Not the normal path, but… Cinnabon! [Maven Roofing Ad] Dave Young: Hey, welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here alongside Stephen Semple and today we’re going to unpack the story of Cinnabon. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: Now Stephen told me the topic for today. He said, “Now I know you know about this one.” And then he said Cinnabon. And I’m like, “You know, actually I don’t.” Stephen Semple: Really? Dave Young: I’m really more … You know what I’m really more interested in is why you- Stephen Semple: Have you never gone to a shopping mall? Dave Young: … why you think I would know Cinnabon? Just one look at me and you go, “That guy’s seen some Cinnabon.” Stephen Semple: Well, they only have like 1,800 locations. Dave Young: Okay. Here’s the deal. Here’s the deal. Remember I spent the first 50 years of my life in a town that didn’t have a mall. Stephen Semple: I know, but you’ve grown up since then, Dave. Dave Young: I know. Stephen Semple: They’re still around. It’s not like … Dave Young: They’re around, but we would steer our children away from the Cinnabon when we went to a mall. It was like, “No, we’re not just making you all sticky with frosting.” So the times I’ve had any kind of Cinnabon product, and they’re in what, Wendy’s or places now. Maybe it’s not Wendy’s. Is it Wendy’s? Stephen Semple: I’m not sure. Dave Young: They’re somewhere, you can buy Cinnabon stuff. Maybe it’s Taco Bell. I don’t know. Again, remember, I’m not as familiar with Cinnabon as you thought I was. Dive right in, Stephen. Stephen Semple: You’re getting kind of defensive here, Dave. Dave Young: Edumicate us on the Cinnabons. Stephen Semple: Well, they are now like 1800 locations worldwide, 50 countries. They’re now part of go to foods, huge margins in this type of business. And what’s really interesting, all built around one product. And they sell over two million buns a day, just huge. But this is a very different story than pretty much all of the other stories we’ve done because most of the stories we’ve done have started with a problem that the entrepreneur faced. They solved that problem and turned it into a business. Many of them did not start with, “I’m going to do this thing and make it a business.” It’s like, “I’m going to do this thing. Oh, I should turn it into a business.” Dave Young: “Oh, hey, look, people seem to like this.” Yeah. Stephen Semple: Right. It was started by Rich Komen and his son, Greg. And Rich was an entrepreneur who had been involved basically in the food industry, developing franchises, things along that lines. And he got into the food business after graduating because he saw concessions in the malls and said, “These are crappy.” Dave Young: Right. Yeah. Stephen Semple: Because this was back in the early 80s when malls were just … And the food court in the mall was just sort of getting going. And he saw- Dave Young: Like a pretzel or a corn dog. Stephen Semple: He saw the growth potential and so his idea was to develop a food offering, but he was a retail strategist, not a baker. And he set out to create a product that he wanted to be so irresistible it could sell itself in this super competitive environment, the shopping mall, right? Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: So it was built all from the perspective of the consumer, not the kitchen. And what he wanted to do is have an idea that right from the start he could take national. So it’s 1985 and Rich and Greg Komen, who are [inaudible 00:04:53] father and son team wanted to just basically build this national company and he saw this growth potential in the food court space. He saw that exploding and he had been approaching actually a lot of malls to get a spot in the mall and he finally got one who was willing to give him a chance. Now he needed a concept. This guy kind of went about it in a weird way. I’ll get the mall space and then I’ll find the concept. Dave Young: I’ll find something to sell people. People seem to like these cinnamon rolls. Well, all right, yeah. Stephen Semple: So he’s literally on a business trip to Kansas City and he stumbles across this single kiosk selling this sweetbread that’s in a spiral with a glaze and cinnamon called T.J. Cinnamons. Dave Young: T.J. Cinnamons. Okay. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Which is owned by Rice and his wife, Joyce. Rice is a cameraman. Joyce is a school teacher. Rich wants to buy the franchising rights and turn it into a national chain. Dave Young: Wow. Stephen Semple: And he pitches them on the idea of moving fast and building big. He’s so confident that he’s going to get the rights he commits to that lease in the food stall of the shopping mall. They get a little overwhelmed. Dave Young: No kidding. Stephen Semple: And tell Rich, “We need to kind of think about this,” and they actually decide no. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Now Rich has got a little bit of a dilemma. He’s opening in six months and he’s got no name, no recipe. He’s got nothing. Dave Young: Well, look- Stephen Semple: He’s got nothing. Dave Young: Here’s what I know. Ask any grandma in America, find 20 of them and just pick the one that’s got the best recipe. Stephen Semple: Well, what he does is he enlists Jerilyn Brusseau who’s known for exceptional baked goods. Because remember, he is from the industry. And so he and his son go about trying to develop a better bun that’s richer, tastier, sweeter than T.J. Cinnamons. It’s like they want to beat T.J. Cinnamons, but trial after trial after trial after trial, they come up short. Tons of recipes, rejects all of them because here’s the other problem is the baking time is taking 30 minutes and what they know is … This is back in the day when customers would tolerate 14 minutes. We’re not going to tolerate that today. So they tried to accelerate the baking, crank the oven temperature, widen the trays. Everything was unworkable. Now here’s the advantage that we have with the fact we’ve got somebody from outside of the baking industry because here’s what Rich discovers is that if it cooks for 14 minutes, the internal temperature gets to 165 degrees, which is considered safe. But by industry standards, it’s not fully cooked, but it’s fluffy, it’s soft, it’s a bit chewy. Dave Young: It’s gooey. Stephen Semple: It’s gooey. And he’s like, “I think this is better.” Dave Young: Yeah, absolutely. Nobody wants a fully baked cinnamon roll. Stephen Semple: Right. But here’s where the problem- Dave Young: Take a bunch of the Pillsbury, pop the thing open and you put them in a pie pan and the ones in the center are the ones everybody’s grabbing, not the baked up dry ones around the edges. Stephen Semple: Right. But here’s the problem. Because it doesn’t do the full baking, the cinnamon flavor was lacking. So they did all sorts of experiments with all sorts of different cinnamons till they came across Sumatra cinnamon. Dave Young: Sumatra cinnamon. Okay. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Because it’ll create that cinnamon flavor without the excessive heat. Other cinnamons needed the heat. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: So now they got a recipe and they need a name. So they go with bon, which is French for good. Dave Young: It’s good. Yes. Stephen Semple: And cinnamon. Cinnabon. Dave Young: Yeah. I love it. Stephen Semple: And add world-famous because why not? Dave Young: Oh, so it was world-famous from the beginning? Stephen Semple: It was world-famous from the beginning. Dave Young: Stay tuned. We’re going to wrap up this story and tell you how to apply this lesson to your business right after this. [Using Stories To Sell] Dave Young: Let’s pick up our story where we left off and trust me you haven’t missed a thing. Stephen Semple: So now they got a recipe and they need a name. So they go with bon, which is French for good. Dave Young: It’s good. Yes. Stephen Semple: And cinnamon. Cinnabon. Dave Young: Yeah, I love it. Stephen Semple: And add world-famous because why not? Dave Young: Oh, so it was world-famous from the beginning? Stephen Semple: It was world-famous from the beginning. Dave Young: Sure. Cinnamon and good. Everybody loves those. Everybody knows cinnamon and good. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: So December 4th, 1985, the first Cinnabon opens in the Seattle SeaTac Mall and it’s an event. They put on a show. Watch the ingredients being mixed, rolled. There’s this cream cheese frosting and it does great. $500 sales in the first day and the second day was even better. Now, Rich learns that T.J. Cinnamon, who rejected him, have decided to franchise and go into malls. Dave Young: Okay. Yeah, sure they did. Stephen Semple: Sure they did. And look, no mall’s going to take both. So he needs to do something that stand out because he’s got to be the better choice. So they decide, he and his son decide they need to use smell. Because anytime the ovens opened or whatnot, they notice the smell and a crowd would gather. So they were like, “Okay, how do we create smell?” Well, they can’t turn off the ventilation. That’s against code. So the first thing it did was they installed systems with lowest possible ventilation allowed. But even then the smell is coming in waves. So they came up with this idea. Why don’t we just bake sugar and cinnamon? Dave Young: Yeah, bake that all the time. Stephen Semple: Bake that all the time. And that’s what they decided to do. So they started baking sugar and cinnamon. When you walk past a Cinnabon, there’s this wafting, delicious, incredible, fresh baked smell coming out of the store that competes with everyone. Like you know it’s there. You haven’t turned the corner in the mall yet and you know it’s there. Dave Young: When you’re walking through a mall with four little children, you smell it and then you’re like, “Hey, let’s walk on the other side to …” Stephen Semple: As far as I know, they are really the first business that I’ve been able to come across that has used scent as part of their marketing tactic. And they basically bottled one of the most delicious scents possible; sugar and cinnamon. Dave Young: I love it. Stephen Semple: By 1998, there’s 500 locations. They’re doing $300 million in sales and they sell for $65 million to the American Retail Group. And Greg, the son, gets to keep eight locations of his choice because he wants to keep running stuff. And then they went on to being the success that they are today. But the thing that I love was there was an advantage to them not being from the baking industry because that whole thing of by a baker, it’s not fully cooked. To them it was like, “Well, it’s done in the speed we need it done. And in fact, it tastes better.” Dave Young: There’s a lot of baked goods that kind of felt like … My oldest daughter in particular made really good toll-house chocolate chip cookies and never baked them fully because they were harder to get off the pan and once they cooled down, they solidified a bit, but they were delicious. They were just soft. And so smarter than professional bakers. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Sometimes you need that outside perspective that makes you think about things differently. But then from a marketing perspective, the other part that I loved is from a marketing perspective, you’re in a mall and back in those days, malls had tons of traffic, good malls still do and they still thought about, how do I attract people to my product? And it was the scent. Dave Young: We tell business owners all the time that good location and good signage is permanent advertising, right? Stephen Semple: Right. And they upped it by adding the smell. Dave Young: Well, the smell is the advertisement. Stephen Semple: Like good location, good signage. And this [inaudible 00:14:04] smell. Dave Young: Yeah, I’m saying that the smell is another sign. Stephen Semple: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Dave Young: It’s a sign you don’t have to have your eyes open to see. Stephen Semple: They could have ignored it going, “Yeah, well, when we open the oven…” I loved his observation of, “When we open the oven all of a sudden it attracted people. How do we create this smell all the time?” And I just love the fact that … And I never knew this. I never realized what they just do is bake cinnamon and sugar all day long. I had no idea. Dave Young: I got to try that [inaudible 00:14:35]. Stephen Semple: Just throw a bunch of that in the bottom of the oven and let’s go. I thought it was brilliant. Dave Young: What’s the recipe for that? How long do you leave it in? Is it going to burn? I don’t know how that works, but I love it. Stephen Semple: Oh, in terms of the cinnamon and sugar? I have no idea. I have no idea. Dave Young: Yeah. It’s amazing. So I just made myself a note that I’m going to mention this story the next time I teach Portals in September. Stephen Semple: Oh, there you go. Dave Young: So Portals and the 12 Languages of the Mind. The 12 languages of mind includes smell. It’s an actual language. And this is a great … It’s hard to come up with an example of using smell in marketing. Stephen Semple: Well, especially where these guys are so purposeful about it. They literally went down the path of, “How do we make this happen?” It wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t a byproduct. It was, “Okay, how do we actually make this so it’s happening all the time and that smell is always there?” Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: You’re right. It is hard to come up with an example. So that’s awesome that you’ll be able to use that for Portals. Dave Young: Yeah, that’ll be fun. It’s in September. If you want to take the Portals class, look at wizardacademy.org. Stephen Semple: It’s an awesome class. I took it and it’s a fabulous class that really gets you thinking about things differently. Dave Young: It’s fun. Stephen Semple: Yeah, it is a fun class. Real, really fun class. Dave Young: All right. Well, thank you for the Cinnabon story. This is sort of a short episode. Anything else you want to ramble about? Stephen Semple: I just want to say folks go over to wizardacademy.org and click on classes and absolutely try to take Dave’s Portal class. It’s a phenomenal class and you’ll get a chance to meet Dave in person. Dave Young: And it’s fun. It’s a weird woo-woo class. I love it. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: I love teaching it. I love the material. Always have. Stephen Semple: All right. Awesome. Dave Young: I can’t wait to meet the … Look, let’s have the whole podcast audience show up. That would be fun. Stephen Semple: There you go. Dave Young: Everybody is welcome. Stephen Semple: Everyone, come on down. Hey, before you guys go, I just have one thing I just would like to just add. It’s a little bit of a thought to challenge you in your business. We’ve talked a lot in this episode on Cinnabon about smell and using smell in marketing and it’d be really easy to fall into this trap. Look, what I do is advertising consulting and it’ll be really easy to go, “Oh, I can’t use that idea because my business is advertising consulting.” So here’s what I want you to do. Let’s change our thought. I’m going to challenge all of us a little bit, including myself. Here’s what the question I want you to ask. Given that I’m in advertising consulting, how could I use smell to market my business? Ask yourself that question, just insert your business. Given that I am X business, how could I use smell in the marketing of my business? Just ask yourself that question, let it sit in the mind. Let’s see what happens in the next little while. And hey, you get some really cool [inaudible 00:17:33] insight, share them with me. I’m going to let you go now. Thanks. Dave Young: Thanks for listening to the podcast. JT's Mix Tape Episode 82What if shooting stars aren't what we've been told? In Episode 82 of JT's Mix Tape, JT, Brian, and Aaron dive into some of the strangest topics we've discussed yet:
Tomorrow, I'm going to be teaching the first Nafs Mastery Session. But it's okay, please relax... You don't need to panic! There's still plenty of time for you to sign up if you want to attend the session live ;O) The theme of tomorrow's session is "The 7 Portals into Presence".
What happens when government officials begin discussing subjects that most people were told to ignore? UAP disclosures from the Pentagon. Questions about portals, unexplained phenomena, and classified briefings. The Epstein files and growing demands for accountability. And concerns about America's food supply, pesticides, lab-grown meat, and the future of farming. These conversations are no longer confined to internet forums or late-night speculation. They are happening inside Congress, across major media platforms, and increasingly among people asking whether the public is getting the full story. So the real question isn't simply what's being revealed... It's why these conversations are gaining momentum right now. In this episode of Faith & Freedom, Shemane Nugent sits down with Representative Lauren Boebert for a wide-ranging discussion about UAP disclosures, government transparency, the Epstein investigation, faith in public service, and the growing distrust many Americans have toward institutions that were once considered trustworthy. The conversation explores everything from classified briefings and unexplained phenomena to government spending, food security, pesticides, and the challenges facing America's farmers and ranchers. Then Shemane is joined by Tresha Rodriguez to discuss the rise in tick-related illnesses, concerns surrounding lab-grown meat, food independence, and why more families are paying closer attention to where their food comes from. From government secrecy and public accountability to faith, freedom, and the future of America's food supply, this episode examines some of the biggest questions people are asking today. Because sometimes the most important story isn't what we're being told. It's what we're being encouraged not to question. Some call it transparency. Others call it controlled disclosure. But what if the bigger issue is learning how to discern truth in an age of constant information? ⬇️ So here's the question: As more hidden stories move into the public spotlight, are we finally getting answers... or just being given new questions to focus on? Break out the tinfoil hats!!!! We're going down the rabbit hole (all for funsies!) What if ancient civilizations were far more advanced than we’ve been taught? What if movies are preparing us for truths we’re not ready to understand? And what if some children really do remember past lives? Morgan and her fiancé Braden dive into the conspiracy theories, mysteries, and unexplained stories they can’t stop thinking about. From underground cities in Turkey and Egyptian artifacts that defy explanation to alien encounters, missing people in national parks, and the possibility of interdimensional portals... This week is all about curiosity, questioning what we think we know, and exploring the fascinating gray area between science, history, spirituality, and the unexplained. No claims. No certainty. Just two people exploring the unknown and asking “what if?”
Cursed technology, killer machines, and portal horror collide in this sci-fi nightmare horror anthology series. Three strange stories explore what happens when human inventions open doors to darker realities—because sometimes the real horror isn't in another dimension; it's in what we build. Perfect for fans of dark supernatural tales, horror legends, and creepy technology that goes terribly wrong.Tonight's lineup begins with a girl haunted by grief, bullying, and a strange digital presence that may know far more about her reality than she does. Then the world cracks open with portals, vampires, alternate universes, and a desperate race to stop a nightmare from spilling across dimensions. And finally, a struggling young writer discovers that the old typewriter he brought home doesn't just create fiction—it makes it real, with bloody consequences.• Ghost in the Machine — by Shane MigliavaccaA grieving girl, a decaying house, a mysterious coded woman, and a reality that starts slipping at the edges turn this one into a creepy blend of haunted tech, psychological horror, and emotional science fiction dread. It's eerie, intimate, and deeply unsettling.• Portals — by Rob FieldsWhat begins as a stormy detour through a vampire-ruled alternate universe grows into a full-scale battle involving portals, nuclear power, supernatural heroes, parallel Earths, and the fate of entire worlds. This one is huge, wild, fast-moving, and loaded with sci-fi horror spectacle. • Hunter Black — by Rob FieldsA bullied teenage writer finds an antique typewriter that can turn imagination into reality, unleashing a futuristic killer and a wave of revenge-fueled violence that spirals beyond his control. It's mean, fun, pulpy, and full of killer-creation horror with a nasty little edge. From haunted screens and coded faces to bloodthirsty parallel worlds and stories that type themselves into existence, this collection is all about what happens when the unreal stops staying in its lane. Keep the lights low, keep your devices in sight, and maybe think twice before trusting any machine that seems to know you too well.
In this Slingshot Nation live show, we dive into the strange wave of green orb and “meteor” activity showing up in the UFO Files, including the bizarre reports of glowing objects seen near active volcanoes. From the green “meteor” that appeared to streak over a volcano, to footage of strange lights hovering, darting, and seemingly disappearing near Mexico's Popocatépetl, the question becomes harder to ignore. Are we looking at natural phenomena, camera tricks, atmospheric events, or something far more unusual? With new clips circulating online and outlets reporting on claims of volcanic “portals,” UFO activity, and unexplained aerial objects, we are breaking down the footage, the theories, and the bigger pattern behind these sightings. Today, we ask whether these green lights are just meteors burning through the sky, or if they are part of a larger mystery hiding in plain sight. Please pray for Tony's wife, Lindsay, as she battles breast cancer. For our latest “site-specific” episode of Time Sensitive, Spencer meets Sheila Hicks inside her courtyard in Paris's Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, where she has called home for more than 60 years. The 91-year-old Nebraska-born artist—widely known for her vibrant, sculptural textile and fiber works—resists any firm classification of what she does, as her multifarious output reflects. Currently, Hicks's work is on view in a solo exhibition at SFMOMA through Aug. 9, and a two-person exhibition, “Material Matters: Sheila Hicks & Shi Hui,” at Shanghai's West Bund Museum through Aug. 2. Last year, Knoll Textiles reissued her classic Altiplano collection from 1966 in an updated palette, and a major Milan retrospective, her first in Italy, will open on Nov. 16 at the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea. On the episode, Hicks discusses her lifelong relationship with textiles, weaving, and perception through materials and environments; her formative travels in South America, Morocco, India, and Japan; and how chance encounters can shape one's life. „Ich zweifle, ob die Freiwilligkeit ausreicht“ – das sagt Frank-Walter Steinmeier in einem Podcast des Portals t-online. Ausreicht? Was heißt hier denn „ausreicht“? Es kann und darf doch nicht in der derzeitigen Situation darum gehen, ob ein freiwilliger Wehrdienst „ausreicht“! In this episode, Jenn and I have the distinct pleasure of covering the exhibit Botany of Nations, at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, running from March 28th, 2026 through February 14th of 2027! The exhibit offers a culturally layered view of specific North American plants once collected during the famous expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. More importantly, it beautifully centers the voices and perspectives of the Native Nations they came in contact with and explores how plants are portals- portals to lineage, stories, and traditional ecological knowledge. This is a major exhibit, one that is reframing the expedition of Lewis and Clark and seeing it through Indigenous perspectives, with a focus on the inter-relationships between plants and people. In the second half of this episode, we are joined by Dr. Enrique Salmon, where we talk about his perspective on why he agreed to co-curate this exhibit, what ‘plants as portals' means to him, and how he came to coin the term ‘Kincentricity.'Thanks so much for joining us, and enjoy Botany of Nations!Lots of Love. You're an accredited investor. You've got capital to deploy. But before you wire $100K, $250K, or $500K into a syndication — do you actually know what to look for? In this episode of The Vinney & Beau Show, Beau Eckstein asks Vinney Chopra — 4x Amazon bestselling author with $300M+ raised, 42 deals, 5,000+ units, and 500+ accredited investors — the questions every sophisticated LP wishes they had asked before their first wire transfer. A rare, candid behind-the-curtain conversation about how veteran syndicators actually structure deals, vet operators, manage K-1s, and protect investor capital.

What if UFO disclosure is not revealing aliens, but exposing something ancient that has been working behind the scenes all along? In this episode, Tony is joined by Darren Stott, pastor of Eden Church near Seattle, for a conversation on disclosure, fallen angel technology, portals of darkness, and the spiritual war unfolding through the UFO phenomenon. Darren and Tony discuss why “aliens” may be better understood through a biblical supernatural worldview, how technology and principalities may be working together, and why the church needs discernment for what is coming. They also dive into MK-Ultra, missing scientists, government narratives, Bigfoot, shapeshifting shamans, and the dark spiritual systems that may be hiding in plain sight. If disclosure is opening the door to something ancient, the real question is whether the church will recognize the deception before the world welcomes it in.Please pray for Tony's wife, Lindsay, as she battles breast cancer. Your prayers make a difference! If you're able, consider helping the Merkel family with medical expenses by donating to Lindsay's GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/b8f76890Become a member for ad-free listening, extra shows, and exclusive access to our social media app: theconfessionalspodcast.com/joinThe Confessionals Social Network App:Apple Store: https://apple.co/3UxhPrhGoogle Play: https://bit.ly/43mk8kZThe Counter Series Available NOW:The Counter (YouTube): WATCH HEREThe Counter (Full Episode): WATCH HERETony's Recommended Reads: slingshotlibrary.comIf you want to learn about Jesus and what it means to be saved: Click HereBigfoot: The Journey To Belief: Stream HereThe Meadow Project: Stream HereMerkel Media Apparel: merkmerch.comDarren StottWebsite | YouTube | InstagramSPONSORSSIMPLISAFE: simplisafe.com/confessionalsGHOSTBED: GhostBed.com/tonyQUINCE: quince.com/tonyIVERMECTIN: twc.health/tonyVENICE AI: https://venice.ai/theconfessionalsRUMBLE WALLET: https://rumblewallet.onelink.me/bJsX/ConfessionalsCONNECT WITH USWebsite: www.theconfessionalspodcast.comEmail: contact@theconfessionalspodcast.comMAILING ADDRESS:Merkel Media257 N.
