Aaron Siegel built Home Team BBQ because he wanted a fast casual spot that applied fine dining details to the experience. Fast forward a few years and he is now the owner of 7 (count ‘em!) locations in Charleston, Columbia and Aspen, Colorado. If you've ever eaten at a Home Team BBQ, you know it lives up to the hype but Sarah is most interested in digging into how he built a culture within his company to allow such impressive growth. The two friends chat exactly that on today's podcast.

In this detailed and thoughtful episode of 'Behind The BBQ Front Lines' I talk to Aaron Siegel from Home Team BBQ in South Carolina. If you’ve been out and about in Charleston,SC, then most likely you’re familiar with Home Team BBQ. But since it’s a place with multiple locations (including outside the state), those spots are  almost always busy, and they probably have your game on the TV and your favorite beer or spirit in the glass, it’s easy to bypass the idea behind it all. And the idea was simple. Chef Aaron Siegel trained at the Culinary Institute of America then cooked in fine dining kitchens for many years, and he wanted to apply his culinary training to comfort food and barbecue. And what happened was a Gamechanger, and I’m not just talking about that Home Team frozen drink. Aaron himself had to learn to build a business beyond just the food.

Aaron Siegel opened the first Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ in Charleston, SC in 2006. He opened the second location in 2009. Now, six years later, Aaron and his team are opening their third location. Aaron and I talked about everything from the national exposure Fiery Ron's has received (Esquire, The Food Network, etc.) from effective use of Instagram and other social media tools, to being forced out of his comfort zone when he went from chef to owner, to the romanticization of the restaurant business, to bridging the divide between FOH and BOH, to using mistakes made by staff as training moments. Aaron is a humble guy who has built a highly popular and successful business over the last six years, and he's worth paying attention to if you plan to start your own restaurant one day...

That Morning Thing (1967) A remounting of Robert Ashley's legendary opera That Morning Thing was performed only three times (Ann Arbor, MI, Oakland, CA and Tokyo, Japan) in the late 1960s, but the opera acquired its reputation through rumor and the famous recordings of two sections, Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon and She Was A Visitor (on Lovely Music). In three distinct acts plus epilogue, the opera presents the socio-political climate of the times. This new staging by the writer/composer himself promises to be the definitive version of the opera. Directed by Fast Forward. Lighting by David Moodey. Sound by Tom Hamilton. With a cast of 17 performers, including John Hagan, "Blue" Gene Tyranny, Imani Uzuri, Fast Forward, Dave Ruder, Aliza Simons, Gelsey Bell, Paul Pinto, Megan Schubert, Amirtha Kidambi, Brian McCorkle, Aaron Siegel, Kimberly Young, Samantha McHale, Kimberly Bartosik, Madeline Wilcox, and Samita Sinha.
