Catherine Haddad was recently appointed as FoH manager at the iconic Bao Down restaurant. We chatted about the service industry, and making your way as a server - the hours, the work. Mostly however, we chatted about her side-hustle. Catherine makes the most delicious dumplings. Her little cottage industry operates from the tiny kitchen of her City Bowl flat and everything - pastry to filling - is made from scratch. This is episode 179 of the MxU Podcast! Jeff and Spencer are joined this week by Toby Walters and Blake Hodges from ChurchGear. They talk everything from the "joys" of running to enneagrams and history lessons. We did discover that Spencer and Blake are more alike than you might think... at least on paper. On a more serious note, the guys discuss whether or not the companies churches work with are really looking out for their best interests. Is your church just another business opportunity for them?Service Review (04:46 - 12:49)The guys review a service from North County Christ the King Church in Washington state this week. As far as the mix goes, it's killer for one console running FOH, monitors, and broadcast. Some of the static camera angles and occasional issues with the mix are areas to improve on when it comes to making online streams more engaging and less confusing. Otherwise, great job Jason & team!Upcoming Content (12:50 - 23:58)You've asked, we've listened. Tomorrow, we're releasing a course all about the Blackmagic Ecosystem with our friend and MxU Ambassador Drake Kelch. Have you ever felt a little exploited? Or perhaps unsure of where the money you're spending is actually going? It might be that the organization you're working with is just looking for a quick buck. Or, they do genuinely care about your church. There's some tell-tale signs that the guys discuss this week to know whether or not your church is just another business opportunity.LinksMxUMxU Pop-UpsChurchGear

Jessica and Davin Waite are the Co-Owners and Co-Founders of Wrench and Rodent and The Plot in Los Angeles, CA. Davin was previously on the show for episode 679 when The Plot was just being built, back in 2019.  In the mid-'90s after being hired at Ichiban in Santa Barbara, CA, Davin Waite made the decision to drop out of college and chase his new-found passion; food. After a few years of being mentored by local legend, Chef Hiro, Waite made the move to San Diego where he weaseled his way into the kitchen of Cafe Japengo where he further refined his skills. Six years later Waite opened his first business, The Fish Joint (which later rebranded as Pickled Ginger Catering & Events) which was followed by Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub, and The Whet Noodle all located in Oceanside, CA.  Jessica Waite focused on nutrition in school and was training to become a physician when she realized she did not want to be a part of the modern healthcare system. She transitioned to focus on business and got her MBA in that verticle. She met Davin while working in one of his restaurants and they pivoted to open Wrench and Rodent in 2013 and The Plot in 2019. Jessica focuses on FOH, design, and accounting/numbers while Davin is a chef, primarily focused on menu and BOH. There are currently 3 Plot locations. Favorite success quote/mantra: Jessica: "They didn't say it was going to be easy, they said it was going to be worth in." Davin: "The future is unwritten." Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 11, 2024 is: foment • FOH-ment • verb To foment something, such as hostility or opposition, is to cause it, or try to cause it, to grow or develop. Foment is used synonymously with incite. // Rumors that the will was a fake fomented distrust between the two families. See the entry > Examples: "For this prequel to The Witcher, we go back, back, back to 1,200 years before the time of Geralt of Rivia—and if you don't know who that is, it matters not. Slide right into the self-contained story of a continent where elves, dwarves and other often-warring peoples are living in uneasy proximity, until the arrival of one vicious dictatorship to rule them all makes everyone even less relaxed. Out in the sticks, soldier turned travelling bard Éile (Sophia Brown) is already fomenting revolutionary solidarity by singing rousing folk songs in pubs…" — Jack Seale, The Guardian (London), 25 Dec. 2022 Did you know? If you had sore muscles in the 1600s, your doctor might have advised you to foment the injury, perhaps with heated lotions or warm wax. Does this sound like an odd prescription? It's less so if you know that foment traces to the Latin verb fovēre, which means "to heat or warm" or "to soothe." The earliest documented English uses of foment appear in medical texts offering advice on how to soothe various aches and pains by the application of moist heat. In time, the idea of applying heat became a metaphor for stimulating or rousing to action. Foment then started being used in political contexts to mean "to stir up" or "to call to action."

To Me, My X-Men & Mutant Liberation BeginsOne year after Professor Charles Xavier left Earth with the Shi'ar,[a] the X-Men continue their mission to defend mutants and humans alike and go on to become legally sanctioned by the United Nations (UN). Additionally, Jean Grey has become pregnant while support for mutants has grown. After the X-Men save a young mutant named Roberto da Costa from the Friends of Humanity (FoH), Jean sees that they were outfitted with Sentinel tech and probes Henry Peter Gyrich's mind for the location of the Sentinels' creator, Bolivar Trask. Despite succeeding, she receives a horrifying premonition while doing so. The team later find Trask at a junkyard in the Sahara, where he is rebuilding his Sentinels with the aid of a lobotomized Master Mold. After defeating the Sentinels and apprehending Trask, Cyclops and Jean ponder leaving the team to raise their son away from mutant hatred. The following day, Magneto reveals Xavier's will, in which Xavier gave him control of the Institute and entrusted him with leading the X-Men.While trying to live up to Xavier's legacy, Magneto has taken to saving humans and mutants alike and refraining from killing anti-mutant militants. Distrustful of him, Cyclops and Jean stay to observe Magneto while Rogue sympathizes with his struggles. When UN forces led by Valerie Cooper arrive at the Institute to arrest Magneto for his past terrorism, he surrenders peacefully, hoping to gain the X-Men and humanity's trust. During his trial at the UN's headquarters, the FoH stage an assault on the building. Their leader, X-Cutioner, attempts to shoot a de-powering radiation blast at Magneto, but Storm takes the hit for him. Magneto stops the assault, after which the UN grants him a pardon and discuss the possibility of integrating the mutant nation Genosha. Meanwhile, Jean goes into labor and Rogue is forced to absorb an obstetrician's knowledge when he refuses to deliver a mutant's baby. Jean gives birth to a son, whom she names Nathan. When Beast informs Storm that X-Cutioner's blast de-powered her permanently, she leaves the team to find new meaning in life. While discussing her decision, the X-Men are surprised by the sudden arrival of a woman who looks identical to Jean.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
