SHOW SCHEDULE JOHN BATCHELOR SHOW, 5-14-26.1920 EAST BATTERY, CHARLESTON SC.  Anatol Lieven explores the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, focusing on China's economic shifts and the precarious nature of Taiwan's independence, which remains a primary flashpoint for potential war. (1/16)Anatol Lieven details the internal rebellion against Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Following poor election results, rival Wes Streeting's resignation signals a broader challenge for party control and the future of leadership. (2/16)Peter Berkowitz examines Harvey Mansfield's assessment of Harvard's decline. They discuss how grade inflation, political agendas, and the abandonment of meritocracy have replaced the university's commitment to genuine intellectual excellence. (3/16)Michael Toth highlights how foreign investors utilize litigation finance to gain tax advantages. He advocates for defining legal investments as ordinary income to close loopholes that favor oligarchs and burden shareholders. (4/16)Lance Gatling and Jim McTague discuss Japan's record stock market highs and strategic use of national oil reserves. Despite Middle Eastern instability, Japan maintains economic stability through subsidies, technological leadership, and careful energy diversification. (5/16)Jim McTague and Lance Gatling report on "shrinkflation," where product sizes decrease as prices rise. They analyze the impact of high inflation on daily life in both Pennsylvania and Tokyo. (6/16)Cosmologist Patricio Gallardo presents evidence from galaxy clusters proving that gravity follows Newton's inverse square law across vast distances, effectively debunking alternative theories like Modified Newtonian Dynamics over hundreds of millions of light-years. (7/16)Patricio Gallardo discusses the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. He details future efforts to calibrate telescopes for detecting the "Axion" particle to understand the composition of the missing universe. (8/16)James Lasdun introduces the trial of Alex Murdaugh for the execution-style murders of his wife and son. He examines the surprising speed of the 2023 guilty verdict despite primarily circumstantial evidence. (9/16)James Lasdun describes the Murdaugh family's century-long dominance of South Carolina's legal system. He compares Alex's betrayal of trust and embezzlement to the intimate crimes punished in Dante's deepest circles of hell. (10/16)James Lasdun analyzes the investigation into the double murders, focusing on the kennel video that trapped Alex Murdaugh in a massive lie regarding his whereabouts and exposed investigative deference from authorities. (11/16)James Lasdun explores Murdaugh's claims of opioid addiction and a bizarre staged roadside shooting. He scrutinizes these events as attempts to distract from financial crimes or secure insurance payouts for survivors. (12/16)James Lasdun details how iPhone and GPS data provided a critical timeline of the murders. Despite the lack of direct physical evidence, digital tracking and family-owned ballistics proved vital to the prosecution. (13/16)James Lasdun investigates the years of embezzlement enabled by Murdaugh's status. By siphoning millions from clients and his law firm, he maintained a lifestyle of privilege through a doomed, long-term Ponzi scheme. (14/16)James Lasdun applies the concept of "family annihilators" to Alex Murdaugh. He examines the mindset of successful men who murder their families to prevent the shame of their criminal exposure coming to light. (15/16)James Lasdun recounts Murdaugh's disturbing, hour-long courtroom performance. He discusses signs of psychopathy, including a "robotic" detachment and grandiosity, alongside credible reports of a previously hidden history of violence against women. With the Masters hangover still raging, you'd think the boys would jump straight into the golf talk this week. Not the case here, as Yack charts his latest jaunt through the streets of Richmond. The Iceman shares his love for all things Charleston SC, while LOUDLY proclaiming his dislike for a certain super sized, beaver-themed gas station (it's as shocking as it sounds). AJ returns from a quick trip to the Carolinas himself, but instead of contributing to the Deep South discourse, he (over)indulges in some of the local ‘delights'. The boys eventually get around to breaking down Rory's back-to-back triumph at Augusta before plotting their own plans for on-course dominance. Yack indulges in the Malcolm in the Middle revival, and the guys close on the Commanders' new (old?) uniforms. And to borrow a phrase, “They're real, and they're spectacular.” Listen close and keep the spear euphemisms to a minimum.

[In honor of Black History Month, we're highlighting some past conversations recorded with some former guests with diverse experiences]On June 17th, 2015, nine African Americans were gunned down during a bible study the shooter had been welcomed into with open arms.  One of the victims, Myra Thompson, was the wife of today's guest, Reverend Anthony Thompson.Through the telling of his story of those dreadful days, more clarity is given on how that tragedy unfolded behind closed doors and why.   We also believe listeners will hear a story of miraculous forgiveness in a man's heart.  This miracle potentially was the catalyst of sparing Charleston SC from similar rioting that recently occurred in other parts of the country for other racially charged injustices. We believe in this time of great polarization, the message of forgiveness is an important one.  Special thanks to Robbie Madison Music for song in this episode.Website / Spotify / Apple Music*song is entitled  Psalm 23 (feat. Time to kick back and catch up with the gang in our first "information whiskey" episode of the year. After starting 2026 with our Ultimate Guide series and that marathon session with Dr. Paul Craig, we're taking a breather to hang out, share some flying stories, and tackle your feedback.Ben kicks things off with a tale of terrible timing - how a flat nose tire and an MD-88 pilot who was "stuck" (but not really stuck) turned a simple night cross-country into an evening of airport ground operations. Meanwhile, Brian's been surviving Nashville's ice apocalypse while grinding through the final stages of instrument training, complete with shoulder harnesses and a healthy dose of reality about how IFR actually works versus how it's taught. We dive deep into Brian's theory that instrument flying is "interpretive dance" rather than the precise, procedural flying it's marketed to be. Spoiler alert: holds aren't what you think they are, and ATC doesn't care about your perfect entry technique.Plus, we celebrate some amazing listener accomplishments - from glider add-ons to ice runway landings to solo cross-countries - and address the burning question: do non-flying spouses actually listen to aviation podcasts? (Spoiler: some do, and we want to hear from them!)Featuring Thaden Invasion updates, washing machine turbulence scales, and why sometimes the best thing to do is just wait 15 minutes for the weather to change.Mentioned on the show:* RYY - Cobb/McCollum Field: https://www.airnav.com/airport/RYY* FAA WINGS program: https://www.faasafety.gov/* CCO - Coweta County Georgia: https://www.airnav.com/airport/KCCO* PUJ - Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport: https://www.airnav.com/airport/KPUJ* Flight Insight, Going Missed on a Circling Approach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJiEuHWF5B8* Flight Insight, the VOR Flower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm7XxyzZFh0* Columbia Cascade 99's winter raffle: https://www.columbiacascade99s.org/store/p/2025-2026-winter-raffle* IFR6 - accelerated IFR training, Charleston SC: https://ifr6.com/* TOA - Torrance California: https://www.airnav.com/airport/KOTA* EP46 - Flying With Your Spouse: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep46-flying-with-your-spouse/id1591463789?i=1000632568750Visit midlifepilotpodcast.com for more content, merch, and our free Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Midlife Pilot. Lots of work to do—lets get to it—Here are 3 big things for this hour—   Number One— Back in the saddle! And ready to roll! I will share some stories of the long weekend—we spent that time in Charleston South Carolina—and what an adventure it was—   Number Two— While I was away the FBI brought down a planned terrorist attack that would have targeted the LGBTQ community in Ferndale—not far from Detroit—now two Michigan men are in jail on multiple charges—   Number Three— Today is not just another Election Day—it's D-Day for the soul of America. I'm talking about the fight for our very way of life, the battle against the creeping rot that's turning our shining cities on a hill into godforsaken socialist city-states.

Sarah and I have a  heartfelt conversation about building yoga studios, teaching, mentorship, and community—tracing the journey from early classes in Charlotte to growing studios in Charleston, and the role of storytelling, humility, and inclusion in their work. Sarah has always been a force and a true leader. What a gift to have her sit with me - I'll take any moment with her again as the time we spent together in Charlotte and the years after are precious.  Sarah is known for her booming brand of movement studios in Charleston SC, her generous heart, her advocacy for not only women's rights but her friends  and she is the most motivating teacher - just by being truly herself. Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host Brian Weinstein. We are at the halfway point of the tour by now, having just visited the Schottenstein Center in Columbus for the first time, it is now time to visit an old favorite: The North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, South Carolina for a THREE NIGHT weekend run! A city brimming with both American history and Phish history, we are lucky enough today to be joined by Charleston native Dave Scozarro who tells us about both: places to see, things to do, and highlights from Phish's 35 years playing The Holy City. In a sense, you can track Phish's entire career arc by keeping track of the venues they've played in Charleston since 1990. From small clubs, to larger clubs, to small theaters, and finally, the N. Charleston Coliseum. They moved in in 1995 and never left. Sure, they played two shows at the local tennis stadium a few years ago, and Dave explains why it may not be such a great idea for the Phish crowd for them to continue there. But there's so much to love about both Charleston and the coliseum. World-class food in the city, general admission seating in the venue, and almost four decades of music to dig into. Let's join Dave as he prepares us for July 11, 12, and 13 in Charleston.
