Breed bans are a too common problem for many people who want to rent apartments or homes. Many of these rules are just too arbitrary or based on faulty information. Stacey Coleman of the Animal Farm Foundation chats with Steve about the ongoing troubles people can face when landlords are deciding what pets can and can't be allowed. Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is one of the most common reasons younger cats die too soon. There has been a ton of research and some recent breakthroughs in fighting this disease. Join me as I chat about service dogs with people from Animal Farm Foundation. Animal Farm Foundation's service dog program takes a revolutionary approach to changing the lives of people and dogs. The dogs that are selected by AFF for training are labeled “pit bulls' by the shelters and rescue organizations. This is a marked contrast with the pure-bred, purpose-bred dogs that are usually trained for service roles. Through this approach, AFF debunks negative stereotypes and reduces discrimination against both dogs and people. You know this particular episode hits close to home since we adopted Gigi - a pit bull mix last fall. Laura Vena, from Blockhead Brigade, joins me from Long Beach, California to talk about helping pit bulls. She challenges our perception of pit bulls, introducing many common myths and the truth behind those myths. Throughout our conversation, she pushes us to stop thinking of dogs in “breeds”, but to think of each one as a truly unique individual. Just like us. Dogs, regardless of breed, have numerous facets to their personality and behavior. They have things that make them joyous, and things that make them scared. We cannot predict temperament solely based on breed. And decisions about pit bulls in shelters, in government, and in housing should not do this either. TODAY'S SIMPLE IDEA: HAVE THE FACTS TOP OF MIND. Lookup the “All Dogs Are Individuals” infographic and memorize some of the facts. Respectfully share these facts when we have an opportunity. And point people to Animal Farm Foundation to learn more. SHOW NOTES: Including video of the live interview and links to everything we discussed. https://ForAnimalsForEarth.com/podcast/27

Foundation Manager Nicole Juchem visits RadioRotary via Zoom to describe the many ways that the Animal Farm Foundation improves the way dogs, especially those who have been discriminated against because of appearance or breed, are accepted and also how their other programs training dogs or using their special qualities help people across the United States. Although the Animal Farm Foundation is based in a large farm in Amenia, NY, it works around the nation to rid localities of laws or covenants that discriminate against particular canine breeds or dogs who are perceived as “pit bulls.” The Foundation also takes rescue dogs and trains them to be service dogs that can aid humans with vision, hearing, or anxiety problems. Their Paw of Purpose at Rikers Island Prison enlists prisoners to work with dogs to the benefit of both the dogs and the prisoners. Volunteers for Pets Together are using dogs and other pets to aid persons who have been socially isolated by the pandemic or just by life. Erich Steffensen, Special Programs Manager at the Animal Farm Foundation in Amenia, NY, is the guest for this RadioRotary Program. The Animal Farm Foundation, although it does run an actual farm with rescue farm animals, is primary concerned with dogs—especially dogs that have been called “pit bulls” because of square-shaped heads and bulky bodies, although these are generally of no recognized breed (originally their ancestors were a cross between bulldogs and terriers, but other breeds have joined the mix over the years). One of the goals of the Foundation is to help erase the bad reputation of pit bulls for aggressive behavior. The other goal is to train shelter dogs—primarily pit bulls—for three different types of service: true service dogs, narcotic-recognizing dogs, and family pets. An early part of this training is conducted by prisoners at Riker’s Island, the “Paws of Purpose” program where the dogs go from shelters to 8 weeks at the prison. Formal training for narcotics-sniffers is conducted at a site in Texas; then the trained dogs are donated to police around the nation. Service dogs, including those who aid the hearing and mobility impaired (but not seeing-eye dogs), are trained at the farm in Amenia. All the programs are free to those who adopt the dogs, whether police who take K-9 dogs, mobility or hearing impaired persons needing help, or families that just want a friendly animal. Listen to the program and learn fascinating details about how trained dogs can solve problems and even save lives. Welcome to a special edition of the Individual Animal. What follows is a reenactment of the deposition of Cindy Rarrat. She is a private contractor working with Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue Center.  Animal Farm Foundation is helping to bring a lawsuit against Sioux City's "pit bull" dog ban.  The website for the lawsuit states: "Despite acknowledging that her officers have no training, she insists that they all know the breed standards for the breeds included in the ban and that they have enough animal experience to know exactly what characteristics make a pit bull a pit bull, though she cannot name those characteristics herself. "Forty years of experience tells me I know." Cindy maintains that certain breeds are more aggressive than others, and that physical characteristics are indicative of behavior. When presented with science that states even experienced people misidentify breeds based on visual identification 60% of the time, Cindy insists that her visual identification and knowledge trumps all while also insisting that breed determinations are made by consensus at animal control."   Rarrat's deposition shows that lack of training and knowledge the animal control officers of Sioux City have.   You can learn more about the lawsuit and read the depositions at siouxcitylawsuit.org and donate to help us end breed-specific legislation.

One of the things that we do at Animal Farm Foundation is to provide the resources to pay for attorney's fees for individuals who are suing their municipality over breed-specific legislation. Right now, in Sioux City, Iowa, there is a lawsuit alleging that the city's breed-specific ban violates their rights to due process and equal protection and that no rational basis exists for the ordinance's enactment or existence. In this episode of the Individual Animal, we talk with attorney Gene Summerlin who is representing the dog owners in the case. Gene discusses the problems with visual breed identification and the vagueness of the law, as well as what might make the law unconstitutional. It's an important listen for anyone interested in standing up for dogs and people.

You may never have heard about canine discrimination, but you will learn a lot from this fascinating interview with Stacey Coleman and Nicole Juchem of the Animal Farm Foundation. The Foundation, which started in the 1980s as a refuse farm for horses, it now is a nationwide advocate for pit bulls and a trainer and supplier of service dogs. It specialized in training dogs for very specific tasks, such as opening doors. Among its programs are training K9 dogs for police departments, dogs that learn to detect drugs or hidden weapons. The Foundation works with inmates at Rikers Island Correctional Facility, where inmates socialize dogs and teach them basic canine manners. The dogs are recruited from animal shelters. If the dog turns out to be resistant to training, the Foundation finds a suitable family to adopt it. Meg Harrison, Black Wing FarmsUse KSCO20 as a code at checkout to get a 20-percent discount on your purchase. This is probably what will become the first of several appearances (over months) by Meg Harrison, founder of Black Wing Farms and an expert on using flower essences to solve behavioral problems in animals. If you have ever used Bach Rescue Remedy for yourself or a pet, you've used a flower essence. When Brittany first appeared at our home, she suffered from severe separation anxiety and ended up having to be near me all the time and go everywhere I went over a period of months. At that time, I tried one of Meg's flower essences and could never tell how much it helped. Didn't hurt, but was Brittany actually less anxious? Hard to tell. (Today I'd start an anxious dog on CBD oil and go from there). I have two thoughts about what Meg sells: 1) It works and 2) It doesn't work. I don't think she makes up her many success stories, but where I saw Brittany's rear legs improve within hours of her first CBD dose, I am not sure what flower essences did for her. But I have an open -- even hopeful -- mind about their efficacy. Something I don't really have for homeopathy. If flower essences can live up to the claims, I'd use them in all my transport situations. And rescues. I haven't done extensive testing and I'd like to find a tester with no preconceived expectations about flower essences if I can do a trial. Brittany, by the way, lost her separation anxiety over a period of months and is now comfortable being alone for hours at the time. From her website: 44 years ago, Meg Harrison, founder and owner, was using flower essences for the treatment of alcoholic teens. Then she had a revelation in the aftermath of a horrible horseback riding accident when the horse's owner used flower essences on Meg and her horse to great effect. Since that time 25 years ago, Meg has created a wide range of products to help with the mental, physical, and emotional needs of animals. Uses of these products were well proven in the wake of the Southern California wildfires of 2003 where her products helped to calm and stabilize traumatized pets and farm animals who were lost, injured, or abandoned during the fast-moving blazes. At this time Meg decided to market her products and became BlackWing Farms. In 2005, Meg then went to Louisiana and volunteered (eventually to be hired by the Humane Society of the United States) to help care for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina (and while there also weathered Hurricane Rita). Again the value of her flower essences was proven as time and again they effectively helped to calm and treat the animals in the care of the Humane Society of the United States and the Louisiana SPCA. Since then the products of BlackWing Farms have been requested by various distributors including Jeffers Pet Catalog, as well as the animal rescue organizations, Best Friends Animal Society, ASPCA in NYC, Animal Farm Foundation, the Humane Society of the US, The Gentle Barn in their rescues and longterm care of slaughterhouse animals. Within the last 10 years, we also began to market a line of sprays for use by people to affect mood. This product is a direct descendant of the flower essence concept used by Meg 40+ years ago and are formulated using flower essences and essential oils. Here is the bio Meg provided: Meg Harrison, author and flower essence expert specializing in animal behavior, has successfully helped thousands of behaviorally-challenged animals using proprietary formulas blending essences, carefully chosen essential oils, and homeopathic remedies. Working with trainers, health care practitioners, rescuers, and shelters nationwide; she is able to facilitate positive change in the vast majority (93%) of cases, no matter how difficult or emotionally damaged. Experience includes: rehabilitating rescues from puppy mills, hoarding cases, court-ordered seizures, research labs, captured Mustangs, feral cats,

Get the show notes at http://myrescuerocks.net/42 A couple of weeks ago we learned all about how we can overcome some of the challenges Pit Bull parents face… and even though it is Pit Bull Awareness Month and I mention that particular label quite a bit in this show, Pit Bulls are not the only dogs who get stereotyped. I’ve seen more than one rental property ad that listed Rottweilers and Dobermans and even German Shepherds as banned breeds. These dogs are thrown under the “dangerous” category, while other breeds are automatically labeled as “safe” or “friendly.” These stereotypes are accepted subconsciously by many of us – our conditioning simply a product of too much faith in the mass media, in my opinion anyway. But when you take a minute to think about it, dog breed stereotypes are just as ridiculous as labeling any one race of human as dangerous or safe. We are individuals and so are dogs. “Dogs are individuals.” I say that in quotes because I can’t take credit for this simple truth… I see it on bumper stickers all the time now, because this is actually the slogan of Animal Farm Foundation, which is a local animal shelter that’s been educating the public on breed equality for the past several years. Today’s guest was the assistant director of Animal Farm Foundation until 2015, and she continued to speak on their behalf even after she moved onto her dream job… as you’ll soon hear she now works as the Director of Operations at HeARTs Speak, and it’s through HeARTs Speak’s Perfect Exposure Project that I got the chance to bond with her this past spring. And just in case you’re new here, or you need a little refresher, the Perfect Exposure Project is a 2-day photography and marketing workshop that has visited shelters all over the country. It’s also through HeARTs Speak that I was guided to a post on the Animal Farm Foundation blog that totally intrigued me, it was called “Breed Labels: When Guesses Turn into Predictions.” That’s the issue we’re talking about today, and my lovely guest, Caitlin Quinn, is here to tell us what some shelters are doing to fix it! To access links to resources and see some photos submitted by our storyteller, please visit http://myrescuerocks.net/42 Please help us spread our rescue stories by sharing this show with a friend, PAWlease, I’d really appreciate it!   You can also help out by subscribing, and leaving a rating and review on either iTunes or Stitcher.
